This question is for my friend, who is intending on having her FMIL do her wedding flowers...who also happens to be a BIG TIME smoker!

FMIL would do the flowers in her basement, but her entire house REEKS of smoke.

Will her flowers smell like smoke?

My DH"S grandmother is a BIG TIME chain smoker. She and my MIL did my flowers and they didn't smell some how. I know a lot of florist who are smokers (maybe a hazard of the trade) and none of their flowers ever smelled.

They might, they might not. If I were in that situation I would ask FMIL to make the flowers at my house or someone else's house.

That just would not be a risk I was willing to take.

If they are silk, they will probably smell. If they are natural, probably not, because they won't be in her house long enough.

I talked to my MIL. Flowers will never pick up the smell, but if she is doing they ribbon it will. But it can always be sprayed.

I would think it would matter how long they are stored in the house. My MIL's house reeks of smoke to the point I can't stand going in there - anyway, anything in there more than about 30 minutes is just gross after we leave. This includes the canvas kennel that we have for our dog.

My guess is they will smell so you should probably have some febreze to spray them down or simply don't have them stored at the smoker's house.

Silks very well might- air them outside. Risky- I'd be tempted to have them done elsewhere. Can you contact someone in the biz to ask?

thanks for everyone's replies!

i actually asked the florist that we used, who is also our good friend and she said there is a very high possibility that the flowers WILL pick up the scent!

in fact, she had a delivery driver who used to smoke in the vans, and people would complain that their arrangements smelled like smoke. yikes.

i'll assume this issue, among many others, won't go away though, since the future MIL/florist has been in debate w/the bride about COLORS of flowers, of all things. she seems to think brides carry ONLY white bouquets. which the bride-to-be is having no part of....nevermind the smoking issue!
