View Full Version : Maple bars--Are they available in your area?

Weddings by

We live in the NW and every place that has donuts has maple bars. Several years ago, my parents visited the NE and were surprised to find that the places they visited had never even heard of them. They did mention them to a few places, so it's possible that somebody looked into them and started making them, or that they spread through some other means, but I'm still curious.

Do you have maple bars in your area? If so, have they always been available there?

Such an important topic, eh? :D

We do have maple sugar candies...

We have them at most places that sell donuts. I prefer chocolate bars - but my mom is a maple bar freak ;) so I always brought them to her.

Seeing as how I'm from the NW, maple bars are everywhere. They're my DH's favorite donut. For those of you unfamiliar with them, they're long, oblongish-shaped (def. not round) donuts covered in a maple-flavored frosting. Similar to chocolate eau claire's (sp??) but without the creamy filling and with maple frosting instead of chocolate.

I do love Tim Horton's maple dips. Those are like Boston Creme Pie donuts, but with maple icing on top instead of chocolate.

We have those, although they are around seasonally and they aren't called maple bars. We also have cider donuts and those are GOOD!

Almost all bakeries/donut shops around here offer maple frosting on several varieties of donuts. So I guess we do have maple bars, and maple cream sticks and maple donuts too.

This is the only picture that I could find, and it's from some place that puts bacon on top of it?!? I've never heard of anybody putting anything on their maple bar. They're usually an actual rectangle, being mass produced, in general.

http://cyll.org/images/donut/donut01.jpg

Now I want one, sans bacon. :D

The dough is like a regular donut, topped with maple frosting.

Weddings by

fuzzy, which part of cider donuts is cider flavored?

boilermaker, wow, I have never heard of a place offering frosting. Is it in addition to what's already on the donuts, or are most of them plain and a person just says what they want on top? Or something else entirely? :)

Why am I in a donut mood? I don't even like most donuts. :p It must be those Krispy Kreme locations. They and their soft regular donuts; the diet ruiners.

02-22-2007, 11:19 AM
No, they don't offer you frosting per say. Just that the donuts come pre-frosted with lots of different options. Chocolate frosting, strawberry frosting, marble frosting, maple frosting, some with sprinkles, some with nuts, etc.

So if you walk into a donut shop to buy donuts, you have like 50 varieties to chose from, including several options with maple frosting.

I never would have known that the rest of the country didn't know what these were. I've lived my entire life in the Northwest - quess I took them for granted.

Although, I can't imagine having one with Bacon on it - EWWW. But plain, they are just about my favorite donut.

mmmmm... cider donuts...

They're called that because they go with apple cider. They're really cinnamon donuts.

I used to work at a bakery (hello, extra 15 pounds!) in the midwest and yes, we had maple bars.

Ours were not "long johns" because they were shaped differently--they had a small dip in the middle, even though they were long-john shaped. More like a figure-8 but not quite. I have no idea how to describe it better, sorry!! (We did call them Maple Bars.)

They were a HUGE hit. We'd sell out almost everyday.

And, FWIW, the donut was just a regular raised donut batter shaped differently and fried a little bit longer. We made the maple-flavored frosting by just adding maple flavoring to our regular white icing. So if you have a great icing and donut recipie, just pick up some good-quality maple flavoring, and voila, you have maple bars!!!

The best donut shop is in Anacortes. They're open 24 hours and they make the best donuts ever! Although the Krispy Kreme ones that melt in your mouth could give them a run for their money!

Growing up in the PNW I've always had them available, and they are my favorite. When I lived in Philly, I can remember wondering why I could never find them, then realized they don't know what they are. So when I moved back here, that was one of the first things I had to eat! Yummy!!!

Wimper. I miss Shipley's so bad. Donuts out here seem to be much denser. They don't just collapse in all warm and sugary and soft the way Shipley's do.

Maple bars are easy to find. The doughnut I constantly crave and can't find easily is a cream-filled doughnut. I always find custard-filled, but cream is very difficult for some reason. It's not a whipped cream filling, or like the stuff you find in a Twinkie--it's more like a cross between whipped cream and vanilla frosting.

The best cream-filled doughnut I ever had was from Gerland's grocery store in Houston (we lived there briefly when I was little). Keep in mind we are talking 1982, or thereabouts, though. Some Dunkin Donuts have them, but I don't have any Dunkin Donuts near my home or work!

Several other trashy sweet foods I like and have huge issues finding:
--Blue Moon ice cream (unavailable in Los Angeles to my knowledge)
--Slush Puppies (I wanted one of these so badly during my first trimester of pregnancy, I was almost in tears. I went so far as to research online where I might be able to find one.)
--Dairy Queen CHERRY dip (the gross radioactive red coating they dip ice cream cones in--usually you can only find it in chocolate or butterscotch, and sometimes strawberry. Beware of the strawberry, it's a gyp compared to the cherry. I have a few sources in L.A. for this particularly nasty treat.)

ETA--Oh, I see. Rosebud bumped the thread. I didn't look at how many pages are in this thread, I just clicked on "last" and thought that somehow I had been missing ongoing discussions. :D (I just typed "EAT" instead of "ETA" which is really funny because I just went on and on about food in my journal. And now I'm here in a doughnut thread wondering what's going on in the ice cream thread! I've got to go do something else. Maybe like...make dinner? ;))

wendalah--I love the butterscotch dipped cones! Yum. I would probably like the cherry, too, if I could ever find it. I haven't seen it for a while. Or maybe I'm so disappointed in places not having butterscotch that I don't listen to them saying that they have cherry? :D

Oh great. Now I'm craving the donughts from a small bakery that used to be in Mayville, WI (a 10 minute drive from my childhood home). They had those yummy actual cream filled donughts. My favs were the tripple chocolate. That chocolate cream in the inside was to die for. I know what you mean though. Actual cream filled donughts are super duper hard to find. Either there's the whipped stuff or the custard. I figure if I'm eating a donught, I'm not really caring about how many calories are in there so just give me the good cream stuff.

This is the first I've ever heard of them. I'm in the midwest (Michigan).

First timer here I live in the South (ATL) and grew up in New Orleans and I have never seen them in either place. The earrings are so funny. I have seen those for king cakes.

If you have a Krispy Kreme near you, you can get basically a maple bar, but in a doughnut shape. They're maple glazed iced doughnuts. And they're freaking amazing.

Just be careful. They're like crack in the form of doughnuts. Very habit-forming, indeed!

I will have to try it tomorrow. KK is not far at all :)

OMG, I'll have to hit the KK if those maple donuts are anything close to a maple bar! I try to avoid that place......for obvious reasons! :D

I've avoided this thread because I do miss my maple bars! They are the one thing from the west coast that I've always craved when I've lived on the east coast!

How do Dunkin Donuts maple glazed donuts compare? I picked one up this morning, but I haven't eaten it yet b/c I was rushing to teach my 8am class. But now I'm hesitant b/c I don't want to ruin my experience if they just don't even come close.

Maybe I'll give it away if DD gets bad reviews and get over to Krispy Kreme on my way to dance class tonight.

WHAT?! KK has maple donuts? I've been coveting a Dunkin' Donuts maple donut since I got to CA a year ago. Must. Go. To. Krispy Kreme.

Adya - How was it? The one from DD ? I still have not made it to KK, we really need one out here in the burbs, not that Marietta is that far.

It was pretty darn tasty. I mean I have nothing to compare it to, but I must say, it was a yummy treat. I've been thinking about that donut ever since I finished eating eat. It's sad...I know. I kinda wish I had gotten the #1 special-coffee and 2 donuts. Hee Hee :D

See when I thought maple bars were, I dunno, a bar with some maple flavoring :p I was fine.

You are not alone...when I read the thread title I thought, "Ewww, why would anyone eat a candy bar made of maple?" Clearly, being from MA I've never heard of them...I have lived as far down the East Coast as VA and never heard of them there either. Although I will say after all the pictures posted of them I have seen donuts that look just like them with chocolate frosting. They are eclairs though. I don't ever remember ones frosted in maple.

How about I got all excited b/c I was close to a Krispy Kreme the other day. Get there, and they don't even have any maple frosted donuts.

Not for nothin' but Winchell's Donuts does maple bars, too! And in L.A., my Vons bakery (grocery store) does them, too!

I wanted donuts last week, now I HAVE to have them this weekend (I resisted last weekend).
