We're just beginning to research adding storm windows to the front part of our house. The windows are large and original to our house built in 1834. So - they'll need to be custom made and sized. We would prefer to add ones that do not open as the original windows themselves are painted shut and do not open. I've seen various styles and some open/some don't.

What are some vendors of storm windows?
Do they really make a difference in energy usage?

I would love to hear your experience if you have or have installed storms.

Thanks!

Yes, if you're not going to do the vinyl replacement windows that have the multiple layers of insulation in them, then storm windows will definately make a difference in the heat/ac bill and your coziness!! We have crappy builders grade windows and you can tell a HUGE difference in the rooms with the storm windows and the picture window rooms that don't have the storm windows!!

I believe that Sears still does storm windows. Most places do the vinyl replacement windows, and I don't know if that's even an option anymore with them. Here's a link I found with different links to different suppliers:

Thanks for that link!

Yes, we would never replace the original craftsmanship with a vinyl product. That would seem to be a real shame for the house.
