View Full Version : So what is your Christmas tree theme?

I can't believe I'm posting this in July, but the forum's here so I might as well use it. :p

I actually do two trees. Our big tree in the living room has a birds and butterfly them. The smaller tree in the sitting room upstairs has a toys theme. I saw a really cool nautical themed tree, and now I'm thinking about doing a third tree. We have the room for it. I know. I'm crazy, but I love decorating for holidays.

Please share your themes with me so I'm not the only crazy Christmas tree woman.

We don't have a lot of ornaments yet,but I'm working on mostly red & gold & natural wood. Sounds odd but it looks really good together. I'm going to have to do 2 trees eventually. My aunt does her in ornaments from all over. I got her one from NOLA for Christmas. I'm thinking I might do that too. I love milestone ornaments too.

Our tree is mostly red with crystal, white, and silver accents. The majority or ornaments are snowmen, snowflakes, or santas. So, while there isn't an ornament theme, I guess there is a definite color scheme going on!

We also have a 3 foot tree in the kitchen and it has berries, birdhouses as well as little glass ornaments.

Nope, you're not the "only crazy Christmas tree woman"! lol

Our tree is blue and silver, ina very subtle nod to my Jewish heratige.

This year in our new home, we have a perfect place for a second tree. I'm not sure if I want to do a theme (probably turtles, which I collect, or aviation, because DH is a pilot) or if I just want to go with a different color scheme.

We also have a another small tree that holds the special ornamanets I get from DH. He proposed on Christmas with a gogeous ornament in a box (and a ring, of course!) and every year he now gets me another unique ornament and box. Those all go on the small tree that sits on the dining room table.

I have one mish mosh tree and a snowman tree. I am thinking of doing a gingerbreadman tree this years too. Yup, I am a crazy tree lady too!

Theme?? I guess if you want to put a label on it, ours would be "memories". Most of our ornaments have a certain sentimental significance. My aunt gives my brothers, sister and me an ornament each year from a place she traveled that year. The ornaments I buy for myself all have some significance, and my son and I have both made ornaments. I have my "Peanuts" ornaments that the Danbury Mint did about 15 years ago, which is significant for a way that I won't disgrace myself describing here. :o Each ornament has a story.

Ours is blue and silver. The majority of our ornaments are silver, light blue, and dark blue. The rest of our tree is made up of ornaments that we've collected since getting married as well as a few from our childhood.

Oh, jlp Your house is lovely! Your tree and decorations look fabulous- just like a magazine!

I am jealous. :p

We have never had a Christmas tree. It's true. We have never been home for Christmas, and we have two cats who go nuts around plants, even. :( It is so sad. I want a tree. I think I want to try this year, even if it is just a little tree. I never feel like it's Christmas because we have no Christmas decorations. BUT, I hope to eventually be a crazy Christmas tree lady! ;)

Aww, shucks. You all are making me blush. :o

Thank you for the nice comments. It truly does mean a lot since I put A LOT of work into it. Unfortunately, our house is so small that I never get to have parties to show off my decorations. So, I guess I'll just post pix for all my lovely CC friends. :)

I get it from my parents, who decorate the tree the same way. Sorry the pics are so blurry.

I don't really have a theme either. I've never wanted to do a theme because I love so many different ornaments and colours, I'd hate to limit myself to just a couple colours or a certain style. That being said, my goal is to have "neat" ornaments fill the tree...but that doesn't mean I'll get rid of my pretty bulbs. I can't believe I don't have a picture of my tree, I'll make sure I take a picture of it this year.

I guess you could consider our tree theme, "Hallmark"! :p We decorate the tree with white lights, red bows, and all Hallmark ornaments we have collected over the years! :)

Ummmm...elephants...duh! ;)

Seriously, we do have one tree that has elephant ornaments and red balls with white blinking lights that we set up in the office. Otherwise the one at home has no real direction, outside of my purple balls that match my purple sofas, just a lot of love.

Ours is blueish purple, white, silver, glitter and irredescent colors and I have a few "memory" ornaments people bought me and other cute ornaments. We have ornaments from vacations, hello kitty mini ornaments, mini ornaments of bullwinkle, curious george, boris and natasha, alvin and the chipmunks (all those characters, not sure what they are like disney, warner bro.'s etc), I have a cute one DH gave me of Marge and Homer kissing, an angel from Grandma, snow couple from MIL, etc.

I am looking for a new theme this year tho...

Call me Scrooge but I like those very bright (very cheap) plastic ornaments. They are
colorful and really shine esp. at night w/ the lights on it. I started this when my nieces and nephews were toddlers. Now they help me decorate the tree! And I admit that I don't want to "worry" about packaging and storing the other 11 months of the year. It kind of reminds me of china that people don't use.

By the way, my sister has a huge (very huge) pink, burgandy & pearly white theme going but she always includes the Hallmark yearly "sisters" ornaments I give her.

p.s. I would love to see the elephant tree!

I have a non-breakable theme right now. My ornaments are all red and green wood, with a few ornaments that the kids made at school. And I use red, green, and gold beads all over, too.

Before kids, I had a crystal and silver tree. I still have all the ornaments, and maybe in a few years I can break them out again.

I do a mostly Boyd's Bear plush tree in the living room and a smaller tree in our family room. I have other brands of bears up there as well, and other boyds plush animals (pig, sheep, etc). And there are also lots of strings of lights, velvet burgundy ribbon, and bright colored glass balls.

Our tree was so tall that I could not put the bear angel on top (instead it's right in front of the top)
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4cc01b3127cce9ded0dc9497c00000015108Cat2LJm4aA

Since we had such a large tree I decided to wire up the bears all over since we didn't have enough regular ornaments to fill out the tree. I can't wait to get to the Boyd's bear store to buy some more for the tree.

Our theme is "mishmash". Every year since we both were born Tim and I have been given ornaments that signify something that happened that year or something we were interested in. After those are on, the ornaments that have sentimental value go on (My mom made little angel ornaments out of clothing from Grandparents that have passed away and out of my wedding dress and from extra material from the BM dresses from our wedding, etc.). Then if we still have room, we throw on cheap plastic ornaments that we like. Our tree ends up looking very very colorful. Here's a fuzzy picture of our tree from last year (this was after the cats had somehow knocked it over and I had to try to rearrange everything):

Sorry I didn't come back in awhile to see this! Thanks for the compliments on my tree and stuff. No, I didn't make my stockings...I actually got them at Target last year and then used silver glitter glue to write in the names. Two of the stockings shown are for our dogs. Now I have to hope that Target has the same stockings this year so I can get one for DD. If they don't, then I'll be searching for blue and silver stockings.

I just realized that I actually might not get to have a tree this year because we're selling our house and moving into a new one! :(

Our theme is red, green and silver. Wen we were married DH thought it would be cool if we had an all James Avery Ornament tree. Those suckers are at least $50 bucks each!!! But the neat thing is that we received as a wedding gift a James Avery Wedding Bells ornament, and we have since started the tradition to buy one every year. So maybe way, way down the road DH might get his wish!

I collect the Hallmark grinch ornaments, and any that I may have missed, I am getting on Ebay right now. The tree in our bedroom has our onaments from our first christmas together, and all of the ones from us growing up. The office is mostly Rudolph ornaments and overflow that doens't fit on our regular tree. Another crazy tree lady here!!! I can't get enough christmas! :D

Last year, I did a blue and silver tree because our living room had accents of blue. This year (and a new house) our downstairs will be terracottas, greens and golds. I am thinking that I don't want to overdo the colors already in there so I am trying to come up with something else. I want to go ahead and get on the ball with looking for things. I love a Christmas tree and all the Christmas decorations! Last year, I bought new swags and candles for the windows and wreaths. Okay, now I cant' wait to decorate. I will be looking here for some examples!!

I grew up on a Christmas tree farm, so we had at least 4 trees in the houe every year. One tree is the main tree - family ornaments, baby ornaments, etc. Another was the tree that had all the ornaments given to my dad (and to me when I started teaching) as a teacher. Another was usually a poinsettia tree - we used ribbons, and poinsettias, as well as little poinsettias that went over the lights. Other years, the 4th one would rotate - sometimes it was snowlake/snowman, and one year it was angels.

In my house currently, we use silver, blue, purple, and sometimes red. :)

this was our first married Christmas and we just bought a house so we didn't have extra $$ for decorations. my parents gave us their old tree and I used the leftover Christmas lights and red rose petals from our wedding all over the tree
we finally splurged mid-november and bought 2 $5 boxes of burgundy glass ornaments from wal-mart :) and some $1 ribbon from a garage sale as the topper

I haven't read the whole thread so I hope I'm not repeating a theme.... but today on "Designer's Challenge" (on HGTV) there was a small tree with the theme of ornament frames with photos of family and friends. Love your tree, Nikki! I like to call our theme "though the years." I've been collecting ornaments since I was a kid, too. (Unfortunately, the only ornaments we have for DH are those he's gotten since we've been together.) I try every year to get as many ornaments as I can, with the exception of the one my elementary school boyfriend made me. DH didn't seem to like that one.

I don't have any pictures on my computer of our prior trees, but I'll try to post one of this year's once it's up.

THis is a cool thread! This will be our 4th Christmas married and the first couple of years, we did a "theme" so to speak. Mainly deep colors, like Red/Garnet, Gold and Deep blue, deep green. Ia lso handmade bows (Garnet and Red). However, we only had the typical bulbs and my DH wanted something other than that...so we set out to change that.

We decided that we would start collecting ornaments from places we had visited that represented where they were from. That way we had unique ornaments, but they mean something too. So, we have ornaments from Hawaii, New York, Texas, San Fransisco and Disneyland. Plus, his company has a Christmas Party in which every attendee gets a special ornament....and since it was at that company where we met, it is special to us. Plus, we have bought a few ornaments that catch our eye.

I will try to post a picture since we just finished our tree tonight:)

We don't have a theme....it's a lot of hodge podge, lol! But we love it, because the whole tree is decorated with ornaments I have been getting every year as Christmas gifts my whole life (my mom always got us ornaments signifying big events or things that happened that year). Those are combined with ornaments that hubby has collected forever. Those are mostly hallmark ornaments of star wars stuff, cartoon characters, etc. It's not matchy matchy, but I think it looks nice and it's totally US! I love looking at my ornaments and remembering special occasions in my life. I have a diamond ring ornament for the year we got engaged, a cabbage patch kid ornament from the 80's when I got mine, a cat ornament from the year I got my first pet, lots of ornaments from places we went on vacation, etc. You get the idea... It's a tradition I plan to continue with my kids someday!

Edited to add - now that I've gone back and read the whole thread, I see other people do this too - very cool! :D

We don't do themes, just use our regular yearly-gotten ornaments. But this year in the new place we have room for a tree on top of the foyer to look out the picture window, and I'm really tempted to do a cat-themed tree for the girls: a bunch of inexpensive toys for them and cats-only ornaments.

Since this is a thread about Christmas trees...Does anyone know where I could find battery-operated Christmas tree lights? My mom found some at Walgreens in the Seattle area, but I don't have a Walgreens where I live. I've looked at Lowes, Home Depot, KMart and Family Dollar. Any suggestions?

I do a red, white and silver tree. Most of the ornaments have a snow theme to them- snowflakes, snowballs, penguins in snow, snowmen, and the red things are mostly candy-like. I love my tree, and have always done a theme. I contemplated doing a second tree this year but decided against it- we do only live in a one bedroom apartment. :)

KaliLily: I got a string of battery operated lights for my outdoor wreath at Hobby Lobby. So maybe a craft store near you might have them. It's probably too late for this year, but maybe next year you could order some off the internet.

Anyway, my tree has a snowman/snowflake theme. I have red bows and silver glitter snowflakes all over the tree and all of my ornaments are snowmen. Actually, all of my decorations are snowmen. I don't buy anything Christmasy unless it has something to do with snowmen or snowflakes. What can I say, I live in Texas. We don't exactly get a lot of snow here, I guess it's wishful thinking. :p

I have never really done a theme, and that is surprising in a way, because I love themes, especially in decorating.

My Hoilday theme kind of develops over each year, and it is made up of what groups of ornaments and lights, that we have or have collected, which call to me that particlar year.

It's a hodgepodge, but is getting fine tuned.

If there is any functional theme afoot, it would be "family memories."

I've never really had a theme, either. My sister moved to a new apartment this year with her family and they are starting a new theme: a travel-related tree. (I hope this hasn't been mentioned yet, but I haven't had time to read the whole thread.) I bought her a cute little suitcase ornament (with travel stickers all over it). I don't have pictures because she is in NY but if it's not anticlimactic when I come back from NY on the 27th, I will post photos! :)

Our theme - cram as many ornaments as possible onto the tree. Both DH and I have gotten ornaments from our parents every year since we were born. We also have a bunch of ornaments that people gave us as wedding presents. It's a mix of Hallmark type ornaments, Wedgewood, Waterford, Lenox, wood ornaments, balls. We feel 'bad' leaving any of them off, so we cram them all on.

We alternate every year between white lights/gold bead garland/burgandy bows (which I like the best) and colored lights/silver tinsel garland (which DH likes the best).

Our theme is white lights ( don't like colored lights) with jewel toned ornaments - purple, blue, green, red and silver & gold. I use a bead garland instead of the tinsel garland, no offense to anyone that uses it, but I think it looks so messy. I also add small bows through out the tree as well.

We do put a few ornaments that don't "match" - our Dallas Cowboys ornament, picture of the dogs with Santa, an angel lab for our Nikki that passed away a few years ago - but I try to keep them to a minimum. We have a tree trimming party every year and every year after everyone leaves I fix my tree :p

We have two trees.

The 1st tree is 49ers themed. It's a new tradition for us this year.

The 2nd tree has all of our family ornaments on it.

This year, it's *mostly* snowman themed. Last year we started collecting Hallmark Keepsake ornaments so we have those, plus where ever we travel we buy an ornament.

Here is a picture of this year's tree (before fine tuning and while the rest of the house was in decorating shambles!

No theme--just sentimental and fun ornaments--totally eclectic!

Our small tree in the front window is family themed because all of the ornaments are ones that I had made as a kid and the ones the kids have made over the years. We have the all colored light strands on it.

The big one in the family room is white and red colored strands and all of the ornaments are snowflakes and snowmen.
I will update with pictures when I decide to clean.

Our theme this year is "shatterproof." ;)

We have sheer champagne and silver ribbons doing a sort of maypole thing, with a ribbon bow on top and ornaments in silver, champagne, and blue. It's usually the same colors but with glass ornaments in the same colors, along with some snowman and other glass ornaments that coordinate. We didn't feel safe having the glass stuff up this year because of DD.

We have two trees...our big one is blue, silver and white...I call it my "Winter Wonderland tree" because it has lots of snowflakes on it and its very sparkly. My 2nd tree (which is tiny and in the kitchen) is just red and white with a large piece of candy and 2 candycanes as the topper...its my "fun" tree! I have pictures but not on me so Ill have to come back and post them!

For the past couple years I've done blue & silver. This year I went out and bought all new decorations and settled on red & gold. All of the lights are red & clear.

Here's our tree this year. DD is convinced the shatterproof ornaments are balls and that they're intended for her but we're being big meanies in not letting her have them. That's why the tree is in the corner and blocked off by the end table. The ornaments are shatterproof, but I still don't want her messing with them because they're made in China and I'm sure they have lead paint all over them.

This is NOT my tree, but the tree of friends whose holiday party we went to last night. I really thought it was pretty, and usually I'm not into the whole flocking the tree thing. Sorry the one photograph is so blurry!

We always did a silver and blue theme with my 1960's tinsel tree:

But it had to be retired this year. We ended up going with a black artificial tree with black and silver ornaments!

Flocking is when they spray fake snow all over the tree (white foam).
