I'm always looking for color inspiration. So show me pictures of your painted rooms with the color names so we can look for what we want!

As a first time home painter, can someone tell me about Behr paints? I've found swatches but when putting the swatch on the website, the room looks significantly lighter than the swatch. Is this a poor website or are the swatches poor representations?

I found that all paints (not just Behr) look completely different on a wall than they do on the paint chip. After having dealt with that in my last painting adventure, I decided to test out all my possible colors in advance.
Home depot or Lowes will give you small strips of drywall for free (they are just used between the big sheets of dry wall). Then, I bought the smallest size of each paint I was considering and painted the strips. That way, I got to see what the paint looked like on a wall...and could test it out in different lighting conditions, etc.

The website will be difficult to tell as well because monitor calibrations can differ greatly between different computers.

I am sure to be a regular here, we're building a house and I am obsessing over paint colors!

Thank you. Go for it. I wasnt a yellow fan until we found the colors for our kitchen and living room. Actually to tell the truth. I think I was afraid of color before we bought this house. Well I should say afraid of picking the wrong colors. But my DH and MIL helped out a bunch. I never knew there could be so many paint colors. I wish you luck.

We don't have pics yet of the paint in the room, but here are the colors we used in our loft space: Chocolate Coco, Blue Jewel, Gobi Dessert (the light brown we used in various spaces around the house as our neutral), and we will probably paint one small half wall Aurora Orange, which matches the sofas an many of the accesories in the room. These are the colors on one of the sampel rooms fromt he behr site. (But not exactly how we used them).

It's so difficult to get pictures of paint that convey the color accurately...not to mention all the different elements brought out by different types of light!

I went to Sherwin-Williams yesterday and got one of their $5 "Color To Go" quarts in Hubbard Squash, and tried a swatch of it out on the wall in our living room. I'm still undecided. I don't want to match the tile in the fireplace (cause that would be a horrible color to paint all over the walls ;)) but I do want to 'capture the spirit' of the accent tile.

http://photos22.flickr.com/27867959_5dc2f73a24.jpg?v=0

In this picture it's shiny because I just painted it; not because it's shiny paint... Also... Ignore the color of the window casings - that color does match the accent tile... yech. :p

i'm really anal when it comes to paint colors. i ended up trying out several colors in my living area before finally deciding on a paint color.

kjh924 - i like that color, but i am thinking it is, maybe, a slight too much towards the yellow side. if you could take that shade and maybe lean it more towards tan than yellow it would be perfect. btw, i love the tile on your fireplace. i can't wait to see pix of your room when you are finished.

No paint pictures yet, we are building a house and I have no idea what colors I want to do. I grew up in an all cream house and I HATE that! I know I want color but not sure how much. All of these pictures are helping me tons. Please keep them coming!

Also, anyone use the Ralph Lauren suede paints? I'm going to do our study in Rattlebox over the weekend!

When I bought my condo the whole place was done in various colors of RL suede. I loved the way they looked. The paint itself has a sand like stuff in it and it's not all that easy to work with. Also, I did repaint one room and becasue of the texture of the RL, they newly painted walls weren't totally smooth.

Thanks! It is a 1925 house. We are currently remodeling the kitchen/bath, along with doing a bunch of framing & rough-ins in the basement. The plan over the next couple of months is to repaint the entire interior (entire interior... there's a mouthful), so hopefully soon I will be able to post lots of pictures in this thread. :)

Rebjc, I think you may be right. I was looking for 'deep and rich without being too dark' and I think I might've gotten 'bright and sunny.' I'm so glad SW has those $5 quarts with the screw-top - how handy!

A couple of weeks ago, I talked with one of the interior designers in my office about choosing colors. She was even gracious enough to go with me to the tile store with a couple of fandecks, and help me choose a paint color for the bathroom (and flooring for the kitchen). When we were there, she made a suggestion that I thought was a good one. She said that I should approach choosing the colors for the house not as choosing colors for separate rooms, but approach the house as a "Whole House." Lots of times you can see one room from the other, and she reminded me that it is important to choose colors that blend well with each other. And even when you can't see one room for another, your experience going from room to room shouldn't make you feel like you're in a different house once you step into the other room. "All of that being said," she said, "If you think it blends well together, then it does." ;)

So, I decided to go with the "Whole House Concept" of choosing paint. I have a hard time working from the bazillion choices in a fandeck, so I went down to Sherwin Williams and consulted with Martha. Like Tanya said about RH, Martha has already pared down the choices for me. She has nice little color cards with 5 paint colors that all compliment each other, and each of the paint chips tells you which color cards it blends with. Fabulous! Hubbard Squash wasn't a Martha Stewart color; it was a Sherwin-Williams Arts & Crafts color, but I liked it.

Anyway, I'm planning to take all of the Martha Stewart cards with me to the house tomorrow and flip through them... maybe I'll come up with something better than the Squash.

I've been decorating over the last two months and finally finished! (I actually have to paint the dining room still, but it will be the colour of my living room and my kitchen will be the colour of my dark hallway)
All my paints were colour matched in Glidden (it's a lot cheaper!)
I painted my hallway white-gallery looking.

Steffie, those colors are gorgeous! And they definitely flow together with that "whole house" concept kjh924 was talking about. The way the front hall and dining room colors look together is fabulous.

Hi Aug2002Bride~

To me, Sands of Time and Believable Buff pretty different. The SoT color is definitely darker with warm brown tones and the BB is lighter with cream accents. My Hallway is not entirely bright, it gets most of the light through our front doors late in the day but it is a great color and glad I utilized it in such a large space. The BB color is a great neutral but just a bit on the boring side IMO. I find that I have to add alot more decor to the BB rooms because the room is begging for accents while my hall is just a great color all on its own...hope that makes sense?? I say go for the warm browns of the SoT even if your light is limited...it would really be great if you have some accent lamps to make up for the loss of light. Good luck!

Bumping up! I'm looking for a great green for our guest room, we've tried a couple and they are just not right. Something darker then a celery and near an apple shade. We'll be using Benjamin Moore paint, so if that is one all the better.

I've been busily painting our house since we moved in in November.

http://pics.livejournal.com/mama_piper/pic/00011ttt/s320x320

One Enchanted Evening from the Behr Disney collection for my daughter's room - she chose it herself. It's a nice mid-tone lilac shade.

http://pics.livejournal.com/mama_piper/pic/0001214h/s320x320

Sherwin-Williams Waterchestnut color matched by Wal-Mart's Dutch Boy for my son's room. I'll never ever by DutchBoy paint again. The square container is horrible for mixing. The corners hold pigment and it ends up streaking at the bottom of the gallon. Nasty stuff.

http://pics.livejournal.com/mama_piper/pic/00008txr/s320x320

Our kitchen and dinnette are Russian Blue by Behr. A nice grey blue shade. Very homey.

Still have the living room and family room to do...

Our master bedroom is Delta Blue from Wal-Mart's Color Place. Very happy with this paint. Much better than Dutch Boy.

We just painted our master bedroom. I am so excited. We just left it the tan color it was when we moved it. DH did not ever feel like painting it. I finally with big help from my MIL painted it Thursday. It has grass cloth and I think the new paint makes it look better. Also the room feels so fresh and new now.

It is Clary Sage by Sherwin Williams. The brand I got from there was the best paint I ever used. It went on so good and we did not need a second coat.

Good luck!

We painted our bedroom yesterday. We chose Cowgirl Blue by Ralph Lauren but had Lowes color match the chip in American Traditions. We used flat and one coat of the blue after one coat of primer. We had a darker green on previously and wanted to make sure none came through.

We just started painting all of the rooms in our new house and have 2 down, 4 to go.

They are Benjamin Moore colors but matched by F&H paints, which is our local BM dealer.

In DD's room, Autumn Red on the bottom and Ribbon Pink on the top of the chairrail.

http://jsmith.smugmug.com/photos/87504719-M.jpg

And in the kitchen, Tropicana Cabana. It's a pretty close match to Tiffany blue, which is what I wanted. It's fun, cheery, and had the added bonus of shocking my MIL. :D

After much trial and error (including school bus yellow!), I painted our kitchen Ralph Lauren's Chamois.

I believe we used Behr's Honeydew on our office, but I should double check. This room can positively glow when it's really sunny, but my husband said I could do whatever I wanted with this one room. :o
This is how it typically looks:

Just a random FYI - Dunn Edwards paint is only sold in Western states like CA, AZ, etc. (I tried to find where I could buy it on the East Coast with no luck).

We've since painted the mantle on the fireplace the same pickle Barrel color:

Great thread! We just signed a contract for a home and all the walls in the home need to be repainted (they are all and off-white color now). It's really overwhelming to have a blank slate when you have no decorating sense. This thread has been really helpful!

DH and I have been in our current house for a year now, but are just now really looking into updating rooms and changing paint colors. So this thread will be great for color inspiration. Right now we're looking for colors for the hall bath, kitchen, Master Bedroom and Master bath.

Any specfic rooms you are looking for, i.e. my bedroom is a wonderful blue but I would never do that in my FR area as it just does not flow with the rest of the house. FR is a gold that I love :-) I think Gold 4 from Lowe's. I will post pics.

We painted the downstairs of our house about a year and a half ago. Previously it was bright yellow.

I will try to get pics up, but after a long and agonizing search (and one wall being repainted about 6 times) we found our ultimate neutral.

Ashwood by Behr -- I wanted gray, dh didn't want anything TOO gray, likes a lot of browns. This one really is almost a mushroomy brown-toned gray and is a medium tone, so it works in a room without a lot of light because it's not too dark. But it has *great* contrast against white trim!

DH and I are just about to move into our first house! The walls are all a really light tan, and while it's not a bad color, we each grew up in homes with all cream walls (since I went away to college, my parents have gone crazy and painted one sage green accent wall in their breakfast nook).

We want our bedroom to be a light, not orangey yellow; I want my office to some shade of grayish blue and DH wants his office/the guest bedroom to be a medium to deep green (not too yellow, not too blue). We have no idea what we want the bathroom to be.

Any new pics or specific color recommendations would be appreciated! I will definitely come post pics once we're done.

These might not be the exact colors you are looking for, but we just built a house and did a couple of rooms in green. There are finished pics in the building thread starting at post 632. (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1790180#post1790180) In the same thread, there are some unfinished pics of our blue MBR. If you like them I'll find you the color names.

Thanks, Fenway! I scanned through the thread, but must've missed your MBR pics--I'll look again! I do love the sage-y greens you have in your kitchen/living area. Can you post the names of those colors? We had no idea what we wanted in the bathroom, but the shower and floor are both a medium tan (more cool than warm) and I think a color along those lines would be great in there!

ETA: I went back through the home building thread and found the other pics you had mentioned! If you don't mind my asking, what colors did you use for your master bedroom and bathroom? Thanks so much!

All the colors except the lime green in the 1st floor bathroom are from Benjamin Moore's Pottery Barn collection.

MBR-Oxford Blue
MBR Bath-Desert Twilight
1st floor light green-Nantucket Gray
1st floor dark green-Tate Olive
Hallway/stairway- Whitall Brown

The 1st floor bathroom is BM's Stem Green

I need some suggestions, please!! :) And if there's already another thread on this that's more applicable, sorry!

We're in the middle of major repairs to our house after Hurricane Ike and we're repainting everything. I've picked all my colors out, and now I have to figure out the trim and kitchen cabinets. What color white are you ladies using? I had NOOO idea there are so many freaking whites!

The colors that I'm using are SW Universal Khaki in the entry and hallway, SW Nomadic Desert in the living room/dining room, and Eddie Bauer Mulling Spices as an accent wall in the living room. For the kitchen, the cabinets are now a creamy white (maybe antique white??). We're painting the walls above the cabinets a sage green (can't remember the exact SW color).

The ceilings are technically an off-white that the builder uses, but they look white to me! :p

Can you guys tell me what colors you've used? And does anyone have any suggestions on whether I should use the same color for the cabinets as I do the trim?

eta: Here are some pictures with the previous owners stuff. i don't have any more recent since we'd just moved in!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/dlphnsfan13/house2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/dlphnsfan13/house3.jpg

Couple of notes -- the paneling on the wall is now all gone and is textured drywall. The frilly crap (trim) is gone. the built-in in the dining area is going to be the same color as the cabinets with the back of it being the same color as the walls (nomadic desert)

mrs pell~ First off I would absolutely paint the kitchen cabinets the same white as the trim...I have seen it done where they use different whites and it looks really bad IMO.

You have access to the house right? What I find best is to go to the paint store and grab samples of pretty much every white, even ones you think are too yellow, or too green etc...and then take them to the actual space and look at them in the day with natural daylight and at night with artificial light and see what works.

I have white cabinets and white trim that we have painted and it is Ralph Laurens Golf Tee White. I like it because it is just the slightest bit creamy which I think looks richer than a stark white. I have also found it look good with all the colors in our house, so try your samples against your tan and green samples too.

Good luck!

Thanks!! Yes, we do have access to the house, but right now it's so hard to tell paint colors b/c there's no real lighting in the house. They have pretty much all the fixtures down b/c they're doing the ceilings and walls right now. Plus there's plastic over all the windows so it makes it even harder! And, by trim, I just wanted to make sure you knew I meant the trim throughout the house, not just the trim on the cabinets. I definitely won't do the trim on the cabinets a different color! :)

There was a question on the first page that addressed this, but I'm still wondering... if the Behr paints on the website don't look the same (lighter) as on the swatches, should I go to a darker color? I'm thinking of Rejuvenate for my bedroom, but now I'm thinking I should go darker with Mother Nature.

udsweetpea -- I don't think you can trust the website OR the swatch. If you can get a small sample from HD that is the best way to go. They do have samples in a lot of colors now, but I'm not sure if you can do the Behr paints... I think pretty much every swatch I have ever used has been lighter when you put it on the wall than it was on the swatch, though.

I believe you can order samples of Behr paint from their website or at Home Depot.

I just painted two rooms with Behr paint. One is Pebble Path and the other is Red Red Wine. Both are quite accurate to the color swatch/card. The biggest variance is due to the change in lighting.

Ummm

don't trust the color on your monitor unless your monitor is calibrated. i'd definitely trust the chip more - but different lighting, and different sheen of paint (eg eggshell vs flat) could affect how the color looks too.

Jumping in a little late here but after much painting and repainting I would highly highly recommend getting a sample and either using scrap drywall or paint a patch on your own wall check it out and see if you can live with it. Vern Yip drives me crazy with his "if you dont like it repaint it" because though it is cheap it is a HEADACHE!

Oh and on the white thing...We use Oyster Pearl for our white trim :) It is a bit creamer than builders white but doesnt have any noticeable undertones :)

Wow...I can finally reply! :) These are the last pictures I have, and it's still while they were working on things, but since we just moved in I don't have any pictures with furniture.

This is our living room. It's SW Nomadic Desert on the main walls, and Eddie Bauer "Mulling Spices" (matched by SW) on the accent wall. I love the way it turned out!
