Tell me about your cake.
The insides, not the outsides I mean.
The catering manager of our reception venue told us the pastry chef "can do anything you want."
So what flavors and fillings were in your cake? I need some inspiration.
Thanks!

Mmmm..this is getting me hungry already!
Since we're from the south, and our wedding color is red, we're having a red velvet cake. FH and I arn't big cake eaters, so we're not doing anything real cool with the cake. Just red velvet and frosting. We don't like any of the fillings or anything, so we're pretty plain.
I think it'll be great since our wedding is in Wisconsin, it'll be something pretty differant for everyone out there. It's a really dramatic color and the taste is so differant, I'm really looking forward to it! :)

we had a lemon cake with strawberry cream filling and buttercream frosting. i wasn't 100% sure of the combo before, but it was soooo yummy.:D lots of guest said it was really good, and different from the usual wedding cake.

I had a plain white cake with vanilla frosting because it's my favorite. I'm a plain vanilla kind of gal. :)
But the best "non-plain" wedding cake I've ever had was a chocolate cake with raspberry filling. I usually do not like fruit fillings in my cake, especially chocolate, but it was really good! Plus the unusual dark colored frosting really made for a dramatic effect.

In honor of our Florida wedding, we had a key lime chiffon cake with key lime filling and buttercream frosting and a thin layer of fondant. It was served with a little rasberry sauce and was sensational. Sweet and a little tart without being too much of either. Very good.
Only six months to go before we can eat the top layer. :p
OH.YUM. I remember that!
One layer was a white chocolate raspberry filling with white cake, and the other two layers were a cake that was a couple of layers of white cake with a chocolate mousse filling called pave. It was devine! Our baker had about 20 different cakes to choose from, so the decision was hard to make!

Plus the unusual dark colored frosting really made for a dramatic effect. Actually this is the first thing that came to mind when he said he could do anything I want... but I figured I would give it some thought before I commit you know? I also thought about raspberry white chocolate (even though I am not a white chocolate fan, that Godiva ice cream flavor is to die for!).
These (http://www.wentevineyards.com/cake_menu.shtml)were some interesting suggestions as well. As were these (http://www.enchantedweddingcakes.com/flavors.htm).
We had a 4 tier cake with 2 alternating flavors- chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and lemon cake with fresh raspberry filling.

This is the description taken directly from our cakery:
Lemon Cream Cake
If you love lemon, then this is the cake for you! This traditional lemon butter cake has a zesty lemon filling enhanced with white buttercream. It is then frosted with our homemade buttercream frosting. A light, refreshing addition to a beautiful summer wedding.
It was to die for!

We had a 4 layer cake (yeah, I know, for 48 people!) and each layer was a different flavor.
Bottom - biggest - vanilla cake with lemon cream filling (by far the favorite of all our guests)
2nd - Italian cream cake with pecan cream filling
3rd - Vanilla cake with strawberry cream filling
Top - Italian cream cake with rum filling (which we took on our honeymoon with us) -

Bride's Cake
4 layers - we wanted something tropical since we're both from very tropical areas so pineapple it was!!! the cake itself was a very very subtle pineapple flavour with a thin layer of pineapple filling (each layer was the same). everyone LOVED the cake! i'm not kidding. it was such a hit and i am so happy we went with it. my bm actually had the same cake for her wedding two and half years before ours and we both loved it so much that we wanted to have the same thing.
we still have people talk about the cake, which is such a nice compliment! we also didnt go with a big name company....it was just a lady who does cakes from her home
Groom's Cake
this was a major chocolate overload with strawberries!!! dh wanted a rich chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. it was 3 layers. i didnt like this as much as the pineapple but it was still good.

What do they do when you have more than one flavor? They serve everyone a tiny bit of each layer?

Bride's cake: all 3 layers were Grand Marnier cake with buttercream filling & frosting -- the most heavenly subtle orange nutty flavor. And it was a peachy orange color inside, whihc matched my flowers ;)
Groom's cake: flourless chocolate cake with choc-dipped strawberries. (The cake is really thick, almost fudgy, and just about to die for.)
And may I say, good lord yum. I am so hungry right now. And pregnant, which never helps when it comes to cake! :D

People just chose what flavor they wanted (or got stuck w/ what was given to them), but most shared with eachother to get a taste of them all.

Hmm let me think. I didn't eat any of the food at my wedding (too busy and nervous) so I have no idea if these tasted any good, but I remember they were nice at the bakery's sample tasting.
The main layer was yellow cake with pineapple filling (our primary wedding color was yellow, and yellow cake is my favorite).
The middle layer was Bailey's Irish Creme cake with Bailey's filling.
The top layer, which I expected to save and freeze for our anniversary, was chocolate with chocolate filling, my husband's favorite. It turned out the caterers served it so we never got to take it home.

Mine was three layers -- the top and bottom layer were an almond cake with grated chocolate, orange marmalade filling, and grand marnier frosting. The middle layer was grand marnier pound cake with orange marmalade filling and grand marnier frosting. Oh, it was SO good.

We had a four-layer cake with alternating flavors: Tiramisu & Carrot Cake w/ cream cheese icing.
The cake people just cut a bunch of cake and let people choose which one they wanted. I ordered extra cake in case people wanted to try both. We did end up with quite a bit of extra cake, but we brought it into our office (we worked together until I left 2 weeks before our wedding) and put it in the 14th floor fridge with a note that said: "Have some cake. Try some; it's pretty good. You don't have to share with the 13th floor if you don't want to. Love, The Honeymooners." B said when he got back to the office, he had a bunch of emails saying THANKS for the cake it was terriffic. :)

We had 3 layers on our cake. The bottom & top were the same - our favorite:
Buttermilk white cake with blackberry jam & cream cheese filling
The middle layer was lemon cake with lemon creme filling.
Both were excellent! :D

My cake was 3 layers, and we went very simple with the flavors. Bottom was chocolate cake, middle yellow, and top vanilla. All were filled with vanilla buttercream frosting.

Ours were sacher tortes minus the raspberry. They were chocolate sponge cake with chocolate ganache- compressed with chocolate ganache icing. It was delicious and rich.
They were a big hit.

Next layer: Chocolate Raspberry Cake
Chocolate chiffon cake with chocolate chip mousse, chocolate ganache, raspberry jam, fresh raspberries and chantilly cream.
Next Layer: White Chocolate Banana Cake
Chunks of white chocolate, walnuts, coconut layered with cream cheese icing and fresh bananas.
Top layer: Carrot Cake
Filled with chunks of pineapple, raisins and walnuts separated with tangy cream cheese icing.

Ah... right well a normal Italian wedding cake is one huge layer or else small one layer cakes on a stand like this:
http://www.molinorosso.it/images/matrimonio_04.jpg
BUT, we're having an American style cake. I specifically asked the chef if he could do it and he said he's done many in the past so to just tell him what flavors, style, bring pictures, etc. The only thing the catering manager asked me to PLEASE not do is put a little bride/groom statue on top (no worries there). I thought it was funny that they find that tradition so crazy.

Ours was a "cannoli cake" - not cake at all, but layers of crispy pastry with cannoli cream filling, frosted with vanilla buttercream icing. It was really unique and we got tons of compliments.

I did a search and could not find a thread about this. Many of you posted pictures of your cakes in the cake thread, but did not say what your cake was made of! Did you like how your cake tasted and how did you decide on flavor(s)? If you want...post a pick to!

We did two layers (top and bottom) of yellow and one layer of chocolate, all covered with buttercream frosting. Going in, I really thought we would choose something more exotic, but the regular cake was so good that we decided to go traditional.

We had chocolate cake that had a raspberry jelly/raspberry mousse mixture for a filling, and it was flavored with a bit of Chambord. BEST cake I have ever had!
The frosting was a white buttercream with fondant leaf shapes. Here's a pic (without the topper):

We had two different flavors:
The Chocolate Caramel Cake This is a 2 layer cake. The cake layers are made of a rich dark devil’s food. The middle filling layer consists of a layer of chocolate truffle, a layer of homemade caramel and a layer of toasted almonds. The cake is frosted with either semi-sweet chocolate buttercream or white chocolate buttercream.
The Apricot Pistachio Cake This is a 4 layer cake. There are 4 thin layers of a yellow cake, each of which are brushed with an orange syrup. The first filling layer consists of a layer of vanilla buttercrream and a layer of chopped pistachios. The middle filling layer is made up of a pureed apricot filling The third filling layer is vanilla buttercream. The cake is frosted with white chocoate buttercream.
We have green tea cake with lemon and raspberry fillings. It was awesome!

Here (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11071) is a thread I started on this last year. It didn't come up in the search for some reason.
We ended up with a chocolate raspberry cake with a almond fondant frosting. I wanted a white chocolate frosting but the pastry chef said you would be able to see the dark chocolate cake underneath. It was awesome.

Here's my cake. It was pound cake on the inside. I didn't have a cake tasting as I got married in the Bahamas. It was easier to "guess" what pound cake would taste like compared to all of the other flavors they had. The shells on the top and some on the layers were made from chocolate. YUM!

Mmmmm, I love remembering our cake... it was out of this world delicious!! We had two flavours - "Tequila Rose with Chambord", and "White Almond w/Grand Marnier" which are recipes that our chef created herself. We weren't prepared to pay as much for our cake as we did (which was beautiful, but I don't have a picture online anymore) until my husband tasted it and had to have it.
Man, I'm gonna have to order a little one for my birthday or something!
edited to add: Here's the cake we got (this isn't ours, but it's what it looked like):

I must say, after all the angst, I don't remember all of mine! We did 3 different flavors, IIRC, and I know the top tier which we froze was chocolate cake w/ white chocolate filling, and I know one of the layers was white cake w/ white chocolate & raspberry filling, but I have no clue what the other one was. I think it was marble cake, but I do not recall the filling - maybe just white chocolate, no fruit?
It was really delicious, in any case, and beautiful. We got TONS of compliments on it.

We didn't have cake, instead we had Belgian chocolate pate with raspberry sauce. I'm sure it was yummy since everyone raved about. DH and I were to busy visiting to eat ours :(
Oh well, I guess we'll have to go back to the restaurant and order some on our anniversary! :D

You know, we both took two bites of our cake as well. I honestly don't know why since we weren't visiting tables anymore. Anyway, the reception place made us a replica top later for our one-month anniversary. Call ahead and ask to make sure they have it when you go.

Our cake was so good. We didn't save the top layer, and I was kicking myself afterwards!
It was chocolate ganache cake (dark, fudgy chocolate) with fresh rasberries & blueberries as filling. Frosted in buttercream, with fresh rasberries & blueberries on the top. Served with dessert wine. Soooo good.

Uh, YUM! I want some of your cake, SiValleySteph! :)
Our cake was soooo good. We only got one piece between the two of us at our reception, and that just wasn't enough. We ended up eating the whole top layer the day after our wedding!
It was a white layer cake, with a buttercream frosting (not too sweet, though). Between the layers we had apricot preserves and custard. It was a perfect balance of the slight tartness of the apricots against the sweet creaminess of the custard. Yummmmm
