I spent the weekend visiting my family, so I got to indulge in more college football than I usually do. (I have a husband who hates football. How is that possible? :D) I got to watch SC, Virginia Tech, Texas and ucla play, and to watch South Carolina beat Tennessee. I was very happy with my Trojans this week.

WisWis -- Georgia Tech wasn't ranked at the time I wrote that. I wasn't trying to short Virginia Tech, I swear. :)

Oh, I forgot to metion how angry my Horns made me last night! Thank goodness they got it together, but I am still not happy. They played like crap in the first half. I just know they went in there all cocky thinking they were going to steamroll OSU and then just played sloppy. ARGH!!!

Yeah, WTH was that first half?? I got back from dinner and turned it on right as the first half was ending - scary!! I called my mom and we bitched all through half time about how they looked like crap. I'm glad they got it together for the 2nd half - but man, no more scares like that!

ardathpaige~My DH is a Gator and this morning on Sports Center they mentioned it was the game when they retired Peyton Manning's jersey. DH got a big kick out of that. Spurrier beat Tennessee every year that Peyton was there and then he came back and beat them the day they retired his jersey. He said he could just picture Peyton shaking his head and saying, "Damn that Spurrier!" ;)

DH is a little worried for when the Gators play the Gamecocks. New coach vs. old coach. :p

Yeah, we were laughing about that and that Fulmer must have been SOOOO pissed off!! It was the first time SC has beated TN since 1992, and it's not like SC is that good this year!

For whoever watched the game, did y'all see that Ref get hit by the TN player? I haven't laughed so hard in a long time, and DH was crying he was laughing so hard. We at the same time thought about it at church Sunday and started laughing during one of the hymns! It was hilarious.

I hate that I miss all other football -- but I have to prioritize and watch my Horns. SO glad I didn't watch the first half on Sat, though... not good for rankings, guys! What is this mental block they have with OSU every year??

I keep dreaming about USC going down to Stanford next week (haha, I know), and then I think: how high would that push UCLA? They're undefeated, but their numbers kind of stink -- they allow a ton of points every week. Thoughts?

One more thing, off topic, just because I saw it and it's REALLY flippin cute:

There are some *really* cute ones. UVA's little cavalier bears are killer, but possibly surpassed by the Dancing Hokies. That's why my nephew won't get one; we could never decide which one to hang! LOL

I really don't have a preference when it comes to Alabama and LSU, but I really needed LSU to win tonight. I thought both teams did really well on defense, but what was up with those kickers?!? I am just happy that there shouldn't any controversy as far as who plays for the national championship (assuming we beat A&M). This is getting exciting!! :D

I really don't think this is going to be much of an problem unless the Texas football team opts not to show up and they put the marching band out there.

Well, after the way we started both the Tech game and the Oklahoma St. game, I am a little hesitant to count my chickens before they hatch. Like you said, it shouldn't be a problem, but you never know. I don't want them thinking that A&M will just lie down and send them on their way to the Rose Bowl. Cockiness is our worst enemy.

That being said, GO HORNS!!!!!

DH has a theory that A&M is just throwing all their games this season so far and that they're going to come out and kick Texas' butt. I think he is quite the wishful thinker:D

I was in Austin yesterday and today and it was so fun being in that college town atmosphere! Plus, with everyone on a high from the game - it was great!

It wasn't even the score that was the craziness in that game. It was the insane number of lead changes! It was such a back and forth game. If I were a true fan of either of those teams, I may have had a heart attack!

LOL! I know the feeling!

I should be a Wisconsin fan, more than a PSU fan. My dad and sisters went to college there, and I grew up LOVING PSU, but I went to school in Wisconsin! I've got Badger blood running through my veins! I'm very much a Wisconsin fan, until they play PSU, then ours is a house divided.

I have never seen my fiance so upset after a game. He was SO angry after last weeks game, he just doesn't talk about it anymore. He was even more angry because it was Barry's last home game (so they say).

Selfishly, it helped PSU since they had already beaten OSU. My dad is happier than a pig in mud right now. Who knows, PSU could take the Big 10 conferance. That'd be great! Considering the change from last year's team and this year's...they should give JoPa coach of the year!!

66-19 USC

Gonna Miss Matt Lienart next Season!!! From Reggie Bush's parents he is apparently not coming back next year as we figured. His parents said he has had his run in College ball and is heading to the NFL next season. Gonna miss him too :(

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Run, Reggie, run -- all the way to the Rose Bowl and probably with the Heisman Trophy in tow.

A step away from playing for an unprecedented third straight national title, Reggie Bush and No. 1 Southern California stomped into the championship game by overpowering their crosstown rivals Saturday.

Bush ran for 260 yards and two touchdowns in a 66-19 victory over No. 11 UCLA, the 34th consecutive win for the top-ranked Trojans and 16th straight against a ranked opponent.

Now only Texas stands between USC (12-0, 8-0 Pac-10) and a perfectly historic season.

"This is the type of season we wanted from Day One," Bush said. "This is the type of season we envisioned. We were able to make it come true, it's a great feeling."

Just about the time the unbeaten and second-ranked Longhorns were wrapping up a 70-3 victory over Colorado in the Big 12 title game that will send them to the Rose Bowl, USC was starting its own victory march to Pasadena.

The Bowl Championship Series will make it official on Sunday: Trojans vs. Longhorns on Jan. 4 in the national title game.

USC has had its close calls in 2005, most notably against Notre Dame and Fresno State, but the Trojans brought back memories of their 55-19 beating of Oklahoma in last year's national title game with their performance against UCLA (9-2, 6-2).

"We've done everything we can do to this point, we've done it with a little flair, and a little bit of drama along the way," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "This game was an exclamation point for this 12-game run."

The festivities at the Coliseum started with a warm farewell to a senior class that's been part of one of the greatest dynasties in college football history. Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart was last to be honored with a long standing ovation before USC and UCLA played for the 75th time.

From there, it was Bush's day.

Against the 115th-ranked run defense in the country, USC made its intentions clear for the start. Keep it simple and let Bush put a punctuation mark on his Heisman campaign. No doubt both Bush and Leinart will be in New York next Saturday when the big bronze trophy is handed out. And after the way Bush finished off the regular season, it certainly seems like it's his turn hold the hardware.

"Reggie's got my vote," Leinart said.

On the second play from scrimmage, Bush zipped off tackle for 28 yards. USC ended up driving 70 yards on 16 plays without completing a pass. UCLA held the Trojans to a 35-yard field goal by Mario Danelo. It was a small victory and one of the few UCLA would be able to chalk up in its seventh straight loss to USC.

Leinart started the game 0-for-5, looking overanxious in his final home game. He finished it 21-for-40 for 233 yards with three touchdown passes.

"I was a little tight out there in the first half, you know it was an emotional day," Leinart said. "I was off, obviously."

More importantly, though, he ran his record as a starter to 37-1 thanks to a running game that piled up 430 yards, USC's most since 1989, and a defense that stymied one of the best offenses in the country.

"We were just on fire," Bush said. "We knew we can do whatever we wanted against these guys as long as we execute. Hopefully, that confidence will be able to carry over to the Rose Bowl."

USC was backed up with a third-and-10 at its own 3 at the start of the second quarter, when Bush found a huge lane off the left end and streaked down the sideline for 65 yards.

With that play, LenDale White, Bush's running mate, said he "knew it was a rout."

White ran for a 19-yard touchdown moments late to make it 17-0. He finished with 154 yards rushing on 14 carries as USC went over 300 yards rushing for the fifth time this season. White, the burly thunder to Bush's lightning, scored three touchdowns to break Charles White's school record with 54 for his career.

UCLA fumbled the ensuing kickoff away to USC and Bush, who carried 24 times, went back to work.

He hurdled over a tackler for a 13-yard score to make it 24-0, and later slipped a UCLA defender in the backfield and scored from 10 yards out to put USC up 31-6 at the half.

"If Reggie Bush didn't show it today, I don't know what the heck else he has to do," Carroll said about Bush winning the Heisman. "What an incredible job of seizing the moment by him in the last couple of weeks."

Bush's latest jaw-dropping performance came two weeks after he set a school-record with 513 all-purpose yards, a career-high 295 rushing, in a thrilling 50-42 victory over Fresno State.

In an up-and-down season for the USC defense, the Fresno State game was a low point. On Saturday, defensive end Lawrence Jackson and his crew responded with their best performance of the season.

They had five sacks, three by Jackson, held an offense averaging 40 points a game out of the end zone for the first 56 minutes and even scored a TD when Justin Wyatt returned a fumble 38 yards to make it 45-6 in the third quarter.

"Our defense was on the field too long," UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said. "We played catch up with our offense and that was a difficult task."

Drew Olson, the nation's leader in pass efficiency coming in, finished 14-for-32 for 146 yards and a touchdown, and the Bruins entered the fourth quarter with 166 total yards.

"I'm disappointed and embarrassed," Olson said. "We came in to put up a good fight and the opposite happened."

Meanwhile, what very well might be the best offense college football has ever seen racked up 679 yards -- with its All-American quarterback having an off day.

USC called a timeout with its offense on the field early in the fourth quarter to give Leinart, who passed up big NFL bucks to return for his senior season, a chance to receive one more ovation and hugs from his teammates.

"It's been perfect so far," Leinart said. "This is everything I dreamed of coming back (for)."

That's what I jokingly said to DH during the UCLA/USC game. DH is a UT alum, but like the others here, seemed embarrassed by the game (I distinctly remember hearing him exclaim "oh, come on!" when Colorado fumbled the ball right after the blocked punt that led to a UT touchdown - I was completely confused, because Texas recovered the ball...so I didn't know why he sounded upset! He was just feeling bad for them...)

Anyway...when we watched the UCLA/USC game later...and USC was already up by 40 or more points in the second half and was going for it on 4th and 10, DH was like, they're gonna go for it????? Clearly, at that point they were just being cocky. Granted, I know that they eventually took out their starters, and this was a rivalry game and all that, but they seemed intent on raking up the points way past when the outcome was clear (going for it on 4th down repeatedly, and never kicking off normally - really, were they that afraid of Drew? It's not like he was doing anything for UCLA?) So, my only explanation was that they heard Texas scored 70 points and they wanted to do the same...

HOOK 'EM HORNS!

I don't like to debate why a team does what it does, because you never know exactly why coaches decide what they do, but USC doesn't do a "normal kick off" because their special teams suck. Yes, they suck, which is why they do pouch kicks (and a slew of other weird kicks). The one that looked like an onside kick was not really intended as an onside kick-just a pouch kick gone awry. And as for not running up the score, going for it on 4th and 10-they were down on the 30-do you think punting at that point is really going to be any better? It would have left UCLA deep in 'SC territory-plus, why not practice a little before Texas? ;) Leinart was out at the beginning of the 4th quarter, along with Bush, White, and just about every other starter so to think that 'SC was purposely trying to run up the score is not really a fair statement.

And btw, the 'SC/UCLA rivalry is HUGE, and UCLA was totally trash-talking all week, with their players saying they were going to kick our a**es and then tear down our goal posts in the Coliseum. So IMO, they deserved it. :D

I could copy & paste every comment from the USC fans already in here, but that would be excessive. Basically, I agree! I LOVED that game!! I thought ucla was going to put up a fight and give us a decent game but they didn't even try!

One of my favorite parts was that we were in a good enough position to burn a timeout when Leinart left the game. The crowd was going wild for him & it was so great. :D I love him. :D

I hear that Vince Young had a pretty good game on Saturday (didn't watch so I don't know for sure), but I'd be willing to bet that he didn't do hurdles over a player on the opposing team just to avoid a tackle... TWO DIFFERENT TIMES like Reggie did. I hope Reggie brings a big shiny trophy home from NYC in a couple of days!!

'SC Fans-
I was wondering why Leinart was struggling the first half of Saturday's game, but the OC Register yesterday said that it was because he was so emotional and was actually crying before the game and during his entire first series out on the field since it was his last home game. I felt really bad for him because everyone (ie., television announcers) was ripping on his passing the first half. After reading the article yesterday, I think it's really cool to see how special playing at 'SC has been for him and I wish people had not been as hard on him during the first half. I think it's sometimes hard to remember that these players are college kids, after all, not professionals.

I am thrilled to be playing Texas in the Rose Bowl. Texas has been playing fantastic football, and I'm hoping for a very exciting game. (that the Trojans win of course :D)

My favorite sign from the game:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/cmrink/football/wellmesswithtexas.jpg

ETA:
Carroll very consistently goes for it on fourth if we're on our side of the field. If it's cocky, it's consistenly cocky.
I made the same comment about SC being inspired by the news from the Texas game :)

katmg
12-05-2005, 02:56 PM
I'd much rather see a sign like that one than those stupid upside down Longhorn signs or the ones with the horns sawed off. At least that one shows some creativity which is more than I can say for the ones I see at the Texas/OU game or the Texas/A&M game. ;)

I'll be so interested to see how this game plays out. Texas has been almost boring to watch this year since most of the opponents haven't seemed to be much of a challenge. (some notable exceptions excluded, of course!)

Just a comment on the biggest upset-it was not an upset. An upset is when the underdog in the game wins, not when the team that is expected to win does. ;) It most definitely was not an upset.

And man, Penn State got robbed on their bowl opponent! They deserve someone better than FSU, but I guess the Orange Bowl wanted one of their own in there.

Just an FYI I knew that I was saying it sarcastically because polkadot made reference to that if UCLA had beat USC it would have been "a big upset"

Hints my smart comment, about it being the "biggest upset" I also had a wink by my comment to add to my sarcasim :D just to clarify that for ya ;)

Oh, and btw, UCLA was ranked 12th in the polls, Colorado was unranked and lost to Nebraska last weekend. And the last 14 points against 'SC was scored against the 2nd and 3rd string players (Carroll put all back-up seniors in for their last home game). So let's not compare apples to oranges here.

Can't wait for January 4th!!!!

I won't argue with the team ranking discrepancy. However, according to the NCAA report, as of 12/03/05, Colorado's defense was ranked 44th on total defense and UCLA was ranked 111th. And since we are talking about points scored, the rankings of the opponents' defenses play a big role. ;)

I am not meaning to cause debate/controversy; just throwing in some more info. :) The best team in the nation this year has yet to be determined - we all just have to be patient for a few more weeks!!! I can't wait for that game either!! :D

C'mon now, UTChick. On 12/2 ucla was a ranked one loss team. Colorado was an unranked four loss team.

I saw this question on espn.com yesterday, and thought it would be fun to ask here:

Which would you take

1. USC w/Vince instead of Leinart
2. Texas w/Leinart instead of Vince

UTChick
12-08-2005, 03:08 PM
I really don't see how my statements are that far-fetched. If you play a team with a weak defense (regardless of how the team as a whole is ranked) you will more than likely put up a high score. USC has only played 3 teams that were ranked in the top 50 on total defense and the best ranked teams were 34 and 36. Of course you guys are going to score a lot. Those teams' defenses are not that good. Now, I am not saying that Texas has played a lot of fabulous teams either, but 5 of our opponents are ranked in the top 50 on total defense with the top 3 being ranked 4, 16, and 19. I think it would be interesting to see how both teams would do if they played Va Tech or Alabama who have the best defenses in the nation.

I just think people sometimes put too much stock in the overall team rankings. They don't always show the whole picture, especially now since strenth of schedule has been downplayed so much. And I am not just saying that because Texas is ranked #2. ;)

ETA: I am in no way saying that USC's offense isn't good. Reggie Bush is an amazing athlete. I just find it hard to deny that other teams' weaknesses in defense play a role in how USC's (or any team's) offense performs.

UTChick- While I don't disagree with you that the strength of a defense affects the overall score of a game, what the defensive rankings don't take into account are the following items:

1. The 'SC/UCLA rivalry is HUGE-these games are rarely close. Often, there is a major upset of one team by the other. I can't tell you how many times when I was in college that 'SC was predicted to blow out UCLA, and you know what? We lost all four years I was in college-even when we were up by 3 touchdowns one year! For one team to blow out the other team, or to score that many points is simply crazy-it just does NOT happen in this rivalry. That's why the total score was pretty amazing to those who know and live this rivalry.

2. Defensive rankings of one team don't show the entire picture. After all, it was USC's own defense that managed to keep UCLA's offense off the field most of the game, allowing USC's offense to control the clock. And UCLA has a potent offense, and a much better one than Colorado. And didn't Colorado's coach just get fired?

Let's face it-everything is subjective. You can cheer all you want for the Big Ten, Texas, etc., and pray to God that we lose. We're used to it-after all, everyone has trash-talked the Pac 10 for as long as I can remember, claiming we have the weakest conference outside of the WAC. Hmm, but all I have to say is let's not forget about the 'SC/Oklahoma game last year. :D

UTChick
12-08-2005, 04:47 PM
I am not trying to attack USC, really I am not. I just seems like there is a lot of talk about how Texas hasn't played good teams this year and I am simply pointing out that USC's opponents aren't all that wonderful either. I wish the Big 12 was a stronger conference than it is. It would make things more interesting. I honestly think that the SEC is heads and shoulders above the Big 12 and the PAC 10 because across the board they have more consistently good teams. It is really hard to get an accurate picture of how good USC and Texas really are because our teams are so much better than the other teams in our own conferences. All I was trying to do was point out that the defense of the opponent plays a big part, not just how many wins and losses that opponent has.

ee_chick
12-08-2005, 05:12 PM
UTChick I didn't think your post regarding defensive stats was far-fetched at all. I'm sorry if I gave that impression. The UT win over Colorado was nothing but impressive, and I don't think that I've argued otherwise. I made the same 'trying to score as much as Texas' comment while watching the SC game!

I was responding to the (far more subjective) Nebraska/Arizona comment. ucla did indeed lose in a most humiliating fashion to Arizona. But they had only lost once. Colorado had lost four times. They may have allowed fewer yards, but they didn't do it well enough to win the games. And that's what it's all about, right?

Geez I can't believe I just argued in favor of ucla. What is this world coming to?

linekelei
12-08-2005, 05:19 PM
I totally agree about the subjectivity of each conference, which is why it's so great that USC and Texas get to play each other, rather than having another BCS screw-up. And hey, my husband is a HUGE Nebraska fan, so it's not like I'm slamming the Big 12. He spent his entire childhood thinking that the Pac 10 was some sort of video game. ;) It will never be a perfect system-some conferences will be better than others and it will change every year. I mean, until last year, who had ever heard of Utah and Urban Meyer!!!???!!! But I also tend to think that the SEC is full of themselves-they are ALWAYS complaining about how good they are, and how they have the best teams, and because of that, they get screwed. IMO, and it's just my opinion (not trying to offend anyone here), if there was really a standout team, that team would win regardless of the number of ranked opponents they play within their own conference. I mean, Alabama was good, but Alabama had no offense-they were bound to lose at some point, you know? Tennesse is just not good this year, and Florida is mediocre, at best. I think Georgia would have had the best chance of going undefeated if it hadn't been for their quarterback getting injured for a few games. Really, the only great teams in the SEC this year were LSU and Georgia (I can't categorize 'Bama as a great time-they had one game where only their defense scored points). And if you compare that to who 'SC played-Notre Dame, UCLA (even though UCLA choked), Oregon, Cal (who is unranked now, but was ranked at the time), and Arizona State (also ranked at the time 'SC played them)-I don't think you can automatically say that the SEC is the strongest conference. Not that I am in any way saying that the Pac 10 is the strongest conference (not by a longshot), but you can see where it's not all so cut and dry. Plus, I just think there are a lot of vocal LSU fans who are bitter b/c 'SC took the AP National Championship while they took the BCS in 2004. ;)

Regardless of all of this, I'm just glad that there are only 2 undefeated teams this year!

To be fair, we had no offense because our workhorse and most talented player was taken out by a horrible freak injury during the FL game. Not to take anything away from the rest of my Crimson Tide players, but that one moment totally shook the team up. After our center broke his leg we were done for. Had those injuries not happened I think you would have seen 3 undefeated teams at season's end.

That being said, Congrats to USC and Texas on their outstanding seasons!

ee_chick~I see what you are saying. And I wasn't offended by your post. I like friendly conversation about football because everyone is so emotionally invested in their own teams. I like to hear where others are coming from. I know Colorado sucks - 2 of their 5 losses were to us! ;) (Sorry Colorado fans. :o )

linekelei~I am not sure if wrote it the way I meant it. Over the years, the SEC has consistently had a lot of good teams. For the Big 12, we seem to trade off between Texas, Oklahoma, A&M, and Nebraska having really good years. All four teams rarely have a good season at the same time. However, the SEC has Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama who are the powerhouses. To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about the PAC 10 history, so I am not sure who the powerhouses have been over the years in that conference.

But even looking at this year, Florida has 3 losses, which is unacceptable by their standards. (Trust me, I am married to a Gator.) Tennesee is a mess with 6 losses, but the other 4 teams only have 2 losses, essentially to each other. And that is considered a pretty bad year for the SEC. Of course, there are teams who consistently lose in the SEC and had several losses. But in the Big 12, there are a lot more teams with 5, 6 or 7 losses. In fact, I think it is us with no losses and Tech with 2 losses and the rest are in the toilet. Same for the PAC 10. USC has no losses, UCLA has 2 and the rest have 4 or more losses. See what I mean?

Bush looks to get Heisman back to the runners

December 9, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- From John Cappelletti to Mike Rozier, running backs once walked off with 11 consecutive Heisman Trophies.

Recently, though, quarterbacks have been too tough to pass up. The last five Heisman winners have been QBs.

Reggie Bush is a good bet to snap that streak Saturday night and become the 41st ball carrier to tuck away college football's most prestigious individual award since Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger won the first in 1935.

USC's untouchable tailback is the favorite after capping a brilliant junior season with two breathtaking performances and an outrageous average of 8.9 yards a carry.

"That's crazy. That's ludicrous," said Tony Dorsett, the 1976 Heisman winner from Pittsburgh. "It is just unheard of. Reggie's a game-breaker, a big-game player. That's all you need to say."

Guess where Dorsett's vote is going?

Bush will be joined by Texas quarterback Vince Young and USC quarterback Matt Leinart in midtown Manhattan when the Heisman is handed out for the 71st time.

The three finalists have been the favorites even before the season started.

Leinart, last year's Heisman winner, became a contender to repeat as soon as he decided to bypass the chance for NFL millions and return for his senior season. The left-hander has thrown for 3,450 yards and 27 touchdowns this season, improving to 37-1 as a starter for the top-ranked Trojans.

If Leinart wins the Heisman, he'll join Archie Griffin as the only players to win the award twice. The Ohio State running back did it in 1974 and '75.

As a past winner, Leinart gets to cast a ballot.

"Reggie's got my vote," Leinart said after Bush ran for 260 yards and two touchdowns in the Trojans' 66-19 victory over UCLA that wrapped up a perfect regular season.

If Bush wins the award, he and Leinart will become the third set of teammates to win the award in consecutive years.

The last were Army's famous Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis, in 1945-46.

And the two USC stars could become the first Heisman winners to play together in a college game when USC (12-0) meets No. 2 Texas (12-0) in the Rose Bowl for the national title on Jan. 4.

Or if Young wins, the national title game will be a matchup of Heisman winners for the second straight year -- and the second time ever.

Last season after Leinart won the award, USC played Oklahoma and 2004 Heisman winner Jason White in the Orange Bowl, marking the first Heisman showdown in college football.

Young has always been one of the most dangerous runners in the country -- he showed that in last year's Rose Bowl, scoring four touchdowns on the ground against Michigan -- but this season he's developed into a topflight passer. The junior leads the nation is passing efficiency at 168.6 with 26 touchdown passes.

He would be Texas' third Heisman winner. The first two were running backs. Ricky Williams won it in 1998 and Earl Campbell ('77) was part of that long run of Heisman running backs, starting in 1973 with Penn State fullback Cappelletti and ending with Nebraska I-back Rozier.

In between, USC cemented its reputation as tailback U. with Charles White ('79) and Marcus Allen ('81) joining O.J. Simpson ('68) and Mike Garrett ('65) as Heisman winners.

USC has gotten back in the Heisman-winning business in recent years with quarterbacks. Carson Palmer took the award in 2002, then Leinart last season.

With six Heisman winners, the Trojans trail only Notre Dame, which has seven.

Bush and Young seemed neck and neck in the Heisman race for most of the season, then Bush put a season's worth of highlights together in one game against Fresno State on Nov. 19. He gained 513 all-purpose yards, helping USC escape with a 50-42 victory.

As with Leinart, Bush is being touted as a possible No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, even with a year of college eligibility left.

Bush has said he'll decide whether to go pro after the Rose Bowl.

"Right now, college football is fun," Bush said. "It's everything I ever dreamed of. You only go to college once."

Can't wait to watch tonight :D

YAYAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! REGGIE!!!!! :D :D :D

http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2005/football/ncaa/12/10/heisman.trophy.ap/Reggie-Bush-SI-12.10.jpg

NEW YORK (AP) -- Reggie Bush left the competition behind -- as usual.

Southern California's incomparable tailback won the Heisman Trophy as college football's best player Saturday night over Texas quarterback Vince Young and USC quarterback Matt Leinart, last year's winner.

Flashing uncanny acceleration and ability to change direction, Bush has conjured up memories of Gale Sayers, drawn comparisons to Marshall Faulk, Barry Sanders and Tony Dorsett, and is the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in April's NFL draft.

Bush and Leinart will be the first Heisman winners to play in a college game together when USC goes for a third straight national title against Texas in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4.

This year's Heisman race appeared tight for much of the season, with Bush making a big statement in mid-October against Notre Dame. He ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns in South Bend, Ind., and provided the final push Leinart needed to score the winning TD in the closing seconds of a classic 34-31 victory.

But Bush was relatively quiet right after the Notre Dame game and Young seemed to have pulled ahead, with talk that two candidates from USC would cancel each other out.

That was until the night of Nov. 19, when Bush left Fresno State repeatedly grasping at air and onlookers grasping for superlatives to describe a performance that had to be seen to be truly appreciated.

He ran for 295 yards, racked up 513 all-purpose yards -- the second-highest total in NCAA history -- and USC escaped with a 50-42 victory.

If there was still any doubt Bush was best, he dispelled it against UCLA, running for 260 yards and two touchdowns in a 66-19 victory. Only the lopsided score kept Bush from doing even more damage.

As the Trojans completed another perfect regular season, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Bush would become the fifth USC tailback to win the Heisman, following Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson, Charles White and Marcus Allen.

The 200-pounder from Spring Valley, Calif., just outside of San Diego, ran for 1,658 yards this season, a dizzying average of 8.9 yards per carry, while leading the nation in all-purpose yards with 217.9 per game.

USC now has produced seven Heisman winners, matching the record held by Notre Dame, and an unprecedented three in four years, starting with quarterback Carson Palmer in 2002.

Carla - I saw an interview with him last night. All season he's been saying, "I'll definitely be back next year." In the interview he was saying that he'd have to talk to his family and discuss it with them. He also said something to the effect of, if they win the Rose Bowl, he's not sure that there is really that much for him to come back to. :( I'm hoping that Mack can give him enough reasons to come back! I know there was talk of Ricky Williams going to the NFL after his junior year and Mack convinced him to stay one more year.

See, I saw some reports last week or so (can't remember where) that his family members were talking with NFL team representatives. But everything from him up until that point was firmly fixed in returning. Also, Mack talked about none of his players (since he has been at Tx) has left early and that those in the NFL advise the juniors to stay out their senior years. I guess I can't decide if his stock will be better this year or next year for entering the NFL. I am leaning towards next year since the potenial for him to have a more outstanding season is there as his receivers and running backs develop more. A most curious development though. I also read some of his comments about the disappointment of not winning...could it have been that talking?

During the SC vs. UCLA game they interviewed Reggie's Parents and his parents said he defenitly was going to the NFL for the same reasons katmg named. They said he has done everything he has wanted to do in college football and "it was now time to move on to a new chapter" that being the NFL. I hope Mack Brown can talk Vince into staying - for the sake of Texas football next year and his own career advancement. Vince has made drastic improvements in his passing game from last season to this season, but I personally believe that he could use another year in college to improve his passing game even more. You have to have a strong passing game to be a successful NFL quarterback, and I think he needs a little more work before he is ready. I think he still relies on his abilities to run it out a little too much. But that is just my opinion. ;)

Just as long as it's a good game... but hopefully, please, not quite as suspenseful as last night!! (Sheesh, have you ever seen so many missed field goals??)

Yeah, it was Beat It. I was an old band nerd and I would have been mortified to do the choreography that they were doing. Maybe they were trying to portray the whole "Southern California" thing with the glasses and the "acting."

As far as the miking one instrument goes, when they're using the cameras on the field whatever instrument the field cameras are on is the one you'll hear. I wish they'd turn the mikes off the field cameras but I'm a dork like that.

One other band dork moment, it irritates me that they showed a ton of SC's band but not much of the Texas band. The Longhorn Band really is one of the top showbands in the nation and they barely showed any. They could've cut the prerecorded U2 concert interspersed with game highlights to show more of the bands. Band members work so hard to learn the music and these shows and the TV shows maybe 3 minutes worth.

I haven't been thrilled with the officiating in many of the bowl games this year. I think it was the Fiesta Bowl on Monday (maybe the Sugar Bowl) that made me nuts. The officials wouldn't make any calls - ANY calls - unless they huddled for a conference. It was really annoying. I understand wanting to get the call right, but COME ON.

I like replay in theory, but it seems like the officials are still on eggshells because of it. I dunno, I guess I'm just too used to the fast pace of the NFL. :)

In other notes on the game...was it just me or did Reggie not look all that great? I didn't see the fab-u plays from him like I was expecting. And I actually felt bad for Matt Leinert (sp?) there at the end of 2nd quarter. I don't think he even knew his name there for a bit...On the Texas side, I didn't see as many great plays from anybody but Vince.

I agree with Tara about the half-time show. I really wish they would turn off the on-field camera mikes. I wasn't so wild about the Beat It performance and I certainly didn't think that the U2 half-time clips were worth the hype!

I thought the officiating was not so great (even though it helped our guys in couple cases!) I also thought the announcing was not so great - it just seemed amateurish - they wouldn't finish their thoughts or sentences. Plus, Keith Jackson HATES the Longhorns...oh well!

Good game USC! I'm glad we got our match-up!!

I was thinking the same thing, that I didn't see any of these great plays from Reggie Bush... in fact, most of my comments to DH were along the lines of,

"And they gave HIM the Heisman??" ;) (Honestly, I know he had a phenomenal seson, but we didn't see it last night -- I remember one terrific leaping play.)

Thought it was a great game -- nearly burst a vein in my temple trying not to scream after the kiddo went to bed LOL I know the officiating was off; but I really only remember two pretty bad calls, and one went each way so I decided not to care too much. Go Longhorns!! I am so excited the Horns are National Champs!!

.... and Calliope, I had not seen that play before, but wow  that was quite a TD catch, and he totally deserved that award!!

One more funny thing: I know it was a local affiliate, so most of you didn't see it, but one of the sportscasters from a Houston station managed to interview Selvin Young a little after the game. He asked him to talk a little bit about the big plays, and at some point Selvin said something like "We knew if could get the ball to 10 (VY), he'd make the play, and that's what happened there at the end. So, I was just looking for somebody to hit!" The guy goes, "Did you find someone?" Selvin says, "Yep, I sure did! Gave him a good one, too!" With this huge goofy grin on his face -- it was just classic... DH and I cracked up. Wish you'd seen it!

Congrats to the Horns. Believe it or not this Aggie was actually rooting for y'all!

I just have to say that this Bowl season was by far the best in a LONG, LONG time. With the expection of a few games (i.e. LSU v. Miami- loved that btw), all the games were really close and often came down to 4th quarter last minute plays. And go Big 12 (5-3)!! Great showing. Two of those losses were on last second field goals. Not too shabby!!!

I too, wasn't as impressed with Bush last night, but he had a great season. The A&M game is what really hurt Vince's chances at the Heisman, imho. He just couldn't get it together against us. I was happy at the time b/c of some comments that Vince made that really pissed me off. But, he has since won my respect back. He was phenomenal last night.

Vince go pro!!!!!!

I "marched" with the Rice University Band in high school (I was a reserve member for when someone in the real band had a test or something to study for...Rice is huge into academics). I put marched into quotes because they didn't march, their nickname was the MOB (Marching Owl Band) and they did scatter drills (run from one set to the next) that never failed to make fun of the team they were playing. I loved it. :)

In college I went to Texas A&M that has a 450 member military marching band that is part of the Corps of Cadets. The Aggie Band is so popular in College Station that they have their own cable tv show and the crowd recites the introduction with the announcer. "Now forming at the North end of Kyle Field. The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band." The stadium goes NUTS when they make that announcement. No one leaves the stands when the Aggie Band marches, only when the opposing team's band marches. I wasn't in the Aggie Band, only the University Concert Band...I wasn't into the idea of joining the Corps of Cadets.

I LOVED the mob. My first year at A&M the old SWC was still intact. They were great!!

You forgot part of the announcement..."The Nationally Famous Fightin' Texas Aggie Band!!!"

The thing that I love so much about the Aggie band is that they NEVER stop marching. They never sit and just play (with the exception of the formation where they saw off the Horns for the Longhorns). The whole thing is amazing to watch. I especially like the way the tubas turn! Plus, you gotta love a band that does a formation in which the computer programs say are impossible to do! Yup - I was really impressed with my Horns that year. I think there was a lot of class shown in the respectful way everyone acted. (I'm still miffed that the Aggies did the "Beat the hell outta t.u." cheer that game when they said they wouldn't - other than that - very classy)

I agree that the officiating lacked much to be desired. However, we tivo'ed the game and went back and looked at some of those calls and some were pretty close calls and they could have gone either way. We were able to benefit from some and USC was able to benefit from some, so I think it probably all came out in the wash.

I am proud that we were able to shut down Reggie, but we let White run right up the middle most of the game.

Yes, we only won by 3 and there was the questionable knee down, but...we gave away that first TD and we should have had the 4 pts. poor Pino missed. ;) All in all, I think it was a really good matchup and the best football game I have ever seen. That is what championship games are supposed to be like.

Young leaving Longhorns for NFL
Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Vince Young is headed to the NFL.

Vince 'young' no more

Just days after leading the Texas Longhorns to a national championship, quarterback Vince Young declares himself eligible for the NFL draft. Hear how the Rose Bowl MVP came to his difficult decision.

The Texas quarterback, who led the Longhorns to their first national championship in 36 years, announced Sunday he would make himself eligible for the April draft.

Young maintained during the season that he would to return for his senior year, but said his Rose Bowl performance put him "over the top."

"Hard work has paid off a whole lot," he said.

Young was spectacular in Texas' 41-38 Rose Bowl win over top-ranked Southern California on Wednesday, and he would have been a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy had he decided to return.

The versatile quarterback accounted for 467 yards against USC - 200 running and 267 passing - and ran 8 yards for the winning touchdown with 19 seconds left.

Young thanked many people, including his family and coach Mack Brown, who was at the American Football Coaches Association Convention and could not attend Sunday's news conference. He specifically thanked Brown for "helping me become a better man."

In a statement, Brown said he met with Young and his family Sunday morning and fully supports Young's decision.

"We love Vince and appreciate all the great things he's done for the University of Texas on and off the field," Brown said. "We'll miss him, but want him to do as well in the NFL as he did in college."

In his eight seasons at Texas, Brown never before has had a player leave early for the NFL.

Young ends his career at Texas with a 30-2 record - the best in school history.

His Rose Bowl performance increased speculation that he would leave school early and also started a debate about whether he would be the No. 1 pick in April's draft.

Young's hometown Houston Texans have the first pick. Young said it would be wonderful to play in Houston, but realizes he could wind up somewhere else.

One those possibilities is Tennessee, which has the third pick. Young counts Titans quarterback Steve McNair among his close friends. He said McNair told him "go with your heart" in making his decision.

Gil Brandt, longtime Cowboys personnel director and current NFL.com draft analyst, called Young a likely top five pick but said he thought Young should have stayed at Texas another year.

"He is very, very similar to Randall Cunningham," Brandt said. "Had he waited, he probably would've been a better player. All quarterbacks get better with the more experience they get. Going from college football to the NFL is about like going from eighth grade to being a graduate student at MIT."

Although Young has been criticized by analysts for his quirky sidearm throwing motion, Brandt said the most important factor is Young's winning record.

"He has a bottom-line of 30-2. Bobby Layne and Sonny Jurgenson didn't have perfect deliveries either, but they're in the Hall of Fame," Brandt said.

Young said he talked over his decision with his family and said some of his advisers told him to stay at Texas to finish his degree. Considering the deadline for declaring for the draft is Jan. 15, it was clear his mind was already made up. The ultimate decision was his, Young said.

"It took a lot of praying, listening, understanding and knowing that the day was going to come," said Felicia Young, who attended her son's news conference. "Everything is all right. This is great."

Asked how he might spend some of the millions of dollars he'll earn as an NFL player, Young said, "It all depends on mama."

Young is Texas' all-time leader in total offense (9,167 yards), career touchdowns (81) and career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (37).

This season, Young became the only player in NCAA history to pass for 3,000 yards (3,036) and rush for 1,000 (1,050) in one season. His 4,086 total yards set a school single-season record.

Young won the Davey O'Brien Award for the nation's best quarterback and the Maxwell Award for the top college football player, but came in second behind USC running back Reggie Bush in the Heisman voting.

"I feel like I accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish in college," Young said.

Though he's leaving a year early, Young emphasized his bond with Texas, saying, "I'll forever be a Longhorn."

Young's departure leaves a gaping hole in the offense to fill if Texas is to defend its title.

The only other scholarship quarterback on the roster, freshman Colt McCoy, redshirted last season and didn't take a snap. Texas expects to sign another prep standout, Jevan Snead, who plans to enroll in school this month and participate in spring drills in February.

"We have 15 starters back next year and our expectations today remain the same as before Vince's decision," Brown said. "We are defending champions and will move forward."

*sigh* Yes, I heard. :( I have very mixed feelings about this. I am selfish in that I want us to have a chance to defend the title next year, but I also worry that he is going pro a little too early. He made remarkable improvements from last season to this season and no telling how much more he could have improved with one more year of college experience. But I also understand the desire to take on the challenge of going pro and to avoid the risk of getting a career-ending injury before even making it to the NFL. I hope it all works out for him.

01-09-2006, 07:53 AM
Yeah, I saw it. Can't say I'm thrilled about it, but I understand the reasoning. He is a hot commodity right now and he might not be able to command as much money next year - you just never know. I completely understand his reasoning. Hope it works out for him!

I wish him the best too. I was hopeful that he would stay, but did not expect it really. Plus, if we use Matt L. as an example, staying for the double BCS crown does not always work out in your favor. I think he did the right thing and I hope he keeps his word and completes his degree requirements. Good Luck Vince.

Also, yes, I did see what happened to poor Carson on Sunday. OUCH, and another good lesson about grabbing the goods while you can.

Houston will pick Reggie, then Leinhart will go, then Vince Young. I agree with this. And I think it will be Vince's Mecca to work more closely with Steve McNair, his mentor and father figure through much of his football development. It would probably be ideal. Now if only the Titans sucked more than Houston so he could go # 1 in the Draft.

All the news I've seen down here is how Houston would like to bring a Houstonian home to QB the Texans. Who knows what will happen. I bet Vince would like to play for the Titans though.

ITA! I also agree with the assessment that Reggie will go to the Texans not Vince. It just doesn't really make sense to start over with a new QB for the Texans. Hopefully Reggie can fit right in and start making a difference!

ETA: Tara - I've seen the news reports too, but I think they're more wishful thinking than reality. It's probably hard to have great perspective here in his home town!

Houston should take the best player available NOT the hometown favorite, IMO. That's short-term thinking for them--they already have a young, highly paid QB. Plus, Vince Young should play behind McNair--that would be a perfect fit.

I agree, msnicolea, but they way that Houston is fawning all over the guy you'd think he was the greatest football player that ever lived! They're even saying that Vince Young possibly coming to Houston is even bigger than the Astros going to the World Series...that kinda pissed me off. I love the Astros!

lol! Well, I don't blame fans for wanting hometown guys to come there--they've probably followed this guy since high school. Vince Young is a great college QB--he will be a good pro QB--but he ain't no Reggie Bush! (and I'm in no way a USC fan)

Well now we've got Vince in town saying that he wants to come to the Texans. I honestly think he's saying that just because he wants to go #1. I bet he wouldn't be all hot to trot to come home to the Texans if they didn't have the 1st pick.

Hopefully the owners/coach of the Texans will have cooler heads than the general public!

I just can't help being snarky. I think he wants to go #1. And who could blame him really.

Just had to post up this tidbit from www.cnnsi.com. Gotta love those Aggies! ;)

"They take care of you down there," recruit*wideout Terrence McCoy told the Midland Reporter-Telegram*last Wednesday, explaining his decision to sign with the Texas A&M*Aggies. "I know from my brother (freshman QB Jaime) they keep your pockets full, give you plenty of money, keep feeding you meals." Responded head coach Dennis Franchione, "I believe Terrence did not explain himself well..*We follow NCAA rules here at Texas A&M."

As K-State fans, DH and I are just *loving* our new coach, Ron Prince. He has done an awesome job recruiting and is getting tons of great press for no apparent reason. It's so awesome! :D

BTW, I was totally devastated when Coach Snyder retired, but I'm feeling much more positive now. I can't wait for our spring game on April 22. My DH is overly optimistic, but he thinks we finally have our Vince Young in our new freshman quarterback Josh Freeman. He finished high school a semester early, too, so he's already practicing with the team in Manhattan. Things are really looking up for the Wildcats! :)

Biography of Head Coach Ron Prince (http://www.kstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=3070&SPID=212&DB_OEM_ID=400&ATCLID=220015&Q_SEASON=2006)

Release: 12/09/2005

“I’ve been preparing for this opportunity my whole life,” were among the first words that came out of Ron Prince’s mouth after being introduced as Kansas State’s 33rd football coach on Dec. 5, 2005. And for Prince, serving as the Wildcats’ head football coach is truly a dream come true.

Raised in Junction City, Kan., which is located just 20 miles west of Manhattan, Prince literally grew up in the shadow of Kansas State University. And as far back as he can remember, at least to the age of three or four according to his best recollections, he has dreamt of one day leading the Wildcats.

With that dream now realized, Prince has hit the ground running in his short tenure with the Wildcats. Working at a break-neck pace, he has quickly gone about the task of solidifying K-State’s recruiting and building his staff, all the while beginning the long-term process of re-integrating himself into a community that has for so long been an integral influence on his life.

Prince came to Kansas State from the University of Virginia, where he served the past three seasons as the Cavaliers’ offensive coordinator and a total of five years as the offensive line coach on Al Groh’s staff.

In that time, Prince developed a reputation as one of the nation’s top young coaching talents, helping guide Virginia to four straight bowl berths from 2002-05. Along the way, his Cavalier offense set a dozen team and individual school records and had nine offensive players drafted by NFL teams.

Currently the youngest NCAA Division I-A head coach in the country and one of just four African-American head coaches in all of Division I-A, Prince joined Groh’s staff as the Cavaliers’ offensive line coach in January of 2001 and quickly went about molding the unit into one of the ACC’s best.

Did y'all see this? It's an email the Rising Sophomore QB at Arkansas received from a fan!! Frankly, I can't see how any 18 year old can be truly faulted this much for whether he was ready to be a starter. Supposedly, it was even 'endorsed' by the coaches wife. I certainly don't blame him for transferring to USC, and I hope he's treated better there.
