Who we are:

We are a group of women who for 1 reason or another want to shed a few (or more) lbs. We need the encouragement of others no matter their size or goal and we thrive in an atmosphere where we can all support one another.

Want to join the fun?!?

We welcome one and all. It doesn’t matter what diet you are on (if any) or how many miles a week you run (if any) we will all find lots of help and support here.

Feel free to join at any time during the challenge.
It’s better to join NOW than to wait until we start a new challenge!

You don’t have to read the whole thread to join. Feel free to just jump in on the last page and post a reply with the following information. None of this info is a must but it helps to learn a little bit about each other.

I wanted to join the fun! I'm currently on South Beach, Phase Two and working out for 30-45 minutes on the elliptical at least 5 days per week. I know my goal says 110, but my secret goal is 106 - I just don't know if I can do that or not.

I would like to join as well! I haven't been around since last year when I lost about 15 pounds. I have maintained for a while now and am pleased, but would like to take it to the final goal of 135! I am estimating my current weight and will update it tomorrow morning on my weekly weigh in.

This is so frustrating! :mad: I ate really well this week and exercised my ass off. I went to the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each time I did at least an hour of cardio (burning between 500 and 600 calories each time). Tuesday I took a bit of a break and just took a 25 minute walk. Thursday I did an hour of Ashtanga yoga (burning almost 300 calories). On average I burned 2200 calories a day and ate about 1550. I should be losing more than this! One pound of weightloss is supposed to be about 3500 calories. By that calculation, I should have lost about a pound and a half, and I've lost less than half a pound. I'm afraid my metabolism's messed up.

What should I do?


ETA: Can you change my pounds lost goal to 3.8 for this challenge? I still had 5 lbs on there from the last time, but I'm only looking to get to 115 (final goal), so that's only 3.8 lbs. Thanks!

I was horrible this week though. Many things are going on in my personal life and I just did not have time to go exercise. This will be changing though!

My goal here is to lose slowly--I think I will be less likely to regain if I do. But, this is quite a bit frustrating, because I didn't cheat at all this week. But as long as the number continues to go down, I'm happy enough.

I don't think I'm building more muscle mass because I'm not doing very much strength training (I used to do a lot) -- I'm relying on yoga twice a week for my strength training. But maybe I am burning too many calories. I could be putting myself into starvation mode, I suppose. I'm not hungry all the time, but maybe my body's holding onto the calories take in because it's afraid I won't be getting any more?

Almost forgot, not that anything changed - except my attitude. I'm feeling more positive about this, I CAN do it. :) AND if it means eating much less for a couple weeks, then so be it. Sparkpeople has helped me balance my diet a lot, so cutting back shouldn't hurt too much. ;) Right?

Wow. Only 650 calories per week? I don't know. Even doing only 1000 might be difficult. I just got back from a light workout at the gym, where I burned 440. Maybe I'll ease up on cardio this week and focus on my yoga -- which burns fewer calories. It sure would be nice to take a bit of a break, anyway!

The way I calculate is I take an average of what the machine tells me I've burned (after entering my weight, age and all that jazz) and what my online calorie calculator tells me. But maybe I need a better system? Is there a better way to calculate? Maybe I'm not burning as much as I think I am . . .

My heart rate tends to be at about 150-158 throughout almost my entire workout.

And I do about an hour of cardio on average -- though today, I only did about 50 minutes.

You probably really are burning that much if the heart rate monitor on the machine is accurate (given the heart rate and the amount of time, that amount is perfectly feasible for your weight). The only thing that I would say regarding calories burned accuracy is that, if you're really worried about it, you could get a Heart Rate Monitor (I have the Polar F4 (http://polarusa.com/Products/fseries/f4.asp?cat=consumer)), but since your calculations seem accurate and the HRMs are kinda pricey if you're on a budget (I think mine was ~$75), I wouldn't worry too much. :)

(and BTW, I'm totally jealous of your metabolism. ;) ).

Not trying to be argumentative, but I can't find that recommendation anywhere on SP. I know they put in a suggested # of cals to burn through cardio based on how often and how long you say you'll be working out during each week, and then they adjust your recommended calorie intake based on that, with the idea being that you should have a calorie deficit of 3500-7000 cals per week in order to lose 1-2 pounds per week. A 20-minute aerobic video burns around 170 cals, and doing that a few times a week is at the beginner level of working out.

For MLA - is your calorie deficit in that reasonable range (3500-7000 per week)? If not, then like you said, your body could be trying to hold on to what it has for dear life and refusing to let you lose.

Yeah. I'm at about a 4500 calorie deficit per week. I just wonder if my metabolism has slowed down recently and so I'm not burning as much as I think I am.

Yeah. I've just been doing cardio machines at the gym because none of the classes fit into my schedule. But they just started a step class on Fridays that I can make. I plan to go this Friday. That should mix things up a bit -- and probably kick my behind!

jennylou- I love your avatar. Is that Eleanor from when you were on your cruise? We're debating a cruise with our ds in November. It's either that or a resort in Mexico. How was it traveling with her? I can't believe you lost while on your cruise! You suck! :D

I've been bad... well, i've been eating just fine but i've been lazy and haven't gone to weigh in. Hopefully i can get out of the office this morning and get over there. I used to look forward to weighing in and couldn't wait! It always kept me accountable but now i just want to go home and see dh and ds. I pay a fortune for their service so i need to get my butt in gear and start weighing in regularly. I've been tired and lazy lately... any ideas for a pick me up? Yesterday i started having a cup of tea with my mid morning and afternoon snack so maybe the caffeine will help. I probably need to start exercising and getting my endorphins going! I own an elliptical, see, i'm lazy for some reason.

I just got back from weighing in and i'm pleased to report a loss. Not only did i weigh in but we did my monthly measurements and I'm absolutely shocked to report that in the last 4 weeks i've lost 5 inches in my waist! :eek: :eek: :eek: I lost almost 8 total between my bust, waist, hips, and thigh. Pretty incredible!

Total inches lost since i started 8 weeks ago:
3.5" in my hips
2.5" in my bust
7.0" in my waist
1.0" in my thigh
= 14! :eek:
Total weight loss in 8 weeks is 14.6 lbs. Not too shabby.

Current Weight: 213.6 - HA! Must've been wishful thinking, i typed 113.6 on the front page. Needs to be changed, please.

andrea - I tried to make smart choices for the most part with a few indulgences here and there. Oh, and we walked a ton. :D

elliedew - that's actually in Tampa - but from our trip. :) The cruise was wonderful and the staff of Carnival just loved dd (and her cousin too!). They don't get to see their family much (work 8-10 months per year), so they said they love when little ones come on board. :) As I told Andrea, I tried to make mostly smart choices, but didn't deprive myself of something if I wanted it. We walked a lot. And I did go to the gym one day for 30 minutes of cardio. I'd have gone more, but it was hard to fit in the time with DD. Congrats on the WI and the inches lost! I love counting inches too, since it helps with motivation too!

Congrats, ellidew! I know I was shocked when I took my measurements, too (I do my measurements every four weeks, and from January 28-February 25, I lost 1.75 inches off of my abs alone- not as impressive as yours, but I was still happy :D ). You're right, it is so worth it.

And since we're talking about measurements, between January 1 and February 25 (first eight weeks of the year), I lost 7.8 pounds, 3.5% body fat, and 9.75 inches. :D

I came late to the challenge, so I skipped week 1. Also, I feel I need to add a caveat to this week's results as I had a 24 flu bug this week. I didn't eat much of anything on Tuesday. I haven't had the opportunity to exercise at all this week. I have class on Mondays and Wednesdays as well as work full time. So tonight I'm making it a point to head to my kickboxing class!!! That is an awesome workout. I am also planning on working out Friday, Sat and Sunday. I really want to participate in a half marathon that takes place in July. That is my motivation at this point.

but when you're bigger you can drop a lot when you start a new diet I'll hit a plateau in about 6 weeks and the scale will halt and I'll be stuck indefinitely plus I gained like 10 pounds last month and I don't think my body got used to it being there so that helps

I'm in a little bit of shock myself. I was doing great the first part of the week (down 2 pounds or so), then Wednesday eveing I came down with that stomach bug that seems to be going around this thread. As a result, I'm at my lowest post-pregnancy weight AND have met my 10% goal!! I'm sure it is mostly water weight that I have lost, but it at least gives me some motivation. :)

I feel so much better since I've started working at eating better, staying active and losing weight this past 1.5 weeks. It is true that when you have a lot to lose it comes off quicker. I hope that continues for a while so I can get some good momentum going. Just taking it one day at a time.

I did so much better with eating this week (it helps that we only ate out once) and I've really cut back on my Pepsi consumption which is a huge help (in the past when I've cut it out completely I drop 5 pounds almost instantly).
I've gotten 3 workouts in this week and am heading out to the gym in a little while to get a 4th workout in.

jennylou- Eh, if you need a new scale then it's worth the risk! I was using an old scale with a needle that went up and down and it was NEVER accurate so the only time i got to weigh myself was when i actually went to the center to weigh in. I'm going to see today how close the two are. I weighed myself this morning and was around 207... not a fantastic drop from last week but hopefully the scale at the center shows a bigger loss! I can't wait to break 200! I remember how that felt the last time around. Great job this challenge!

I am stuck in this 3 lbs range and am really frustrated. I think to break out of it, I am going to have to go hard core on the diet. I am not sure it is something I want to do. It might be possible that this is my weight (although I REALLY want to weigh 135). :confused: :confused:
