Past due date and spotting: help for friend ASAP

My friend is about a week past her due date and was scheduled for induction this morning but they had no bed for her so she's kind of on hold. She just called me in a mild panic. She went to the bathroom and saw blood. She said it wasn't a ton but not just a few drops either.

She can't get a hold of her doctor and she's very scared. I am clueless about this kind of thing but could this just be the mucus plug and a sign that she might be starting labor? Is this fairly normal? Should she go to the ER or drive to the hospital, or wait it out, or what?

When in doubt, call the OB. There should at least be an answering service.

If she can't get ahold of her dr, she should go to the ER.

She should definitely call the OB. If she can't get in touch with anyone there, she needs to go to the ER or L&D.

Most likely, she's experience bloody show, which means she's either in labor, or very close to it. ;) Still, any bleeding warrants a looksie from a doc, imo. :)

ETA - when was her last OB appt? Did she have a pelvic exam? That can sometimes cause spotting too.

She finally got ahold of her doctor who said it was not big deal. Butafter it happened a second and thrid time, she called again and her doctor said to go to the hospital. She is there now and they had admited her and started an induction, so I assume that means that it was normal, or at least normal enough not to worry but to make them decide they really needed to get this moving and should find a bed for her.

So now we all sit and wait.

Another update:

Her water broke last night and she started labor on her own, before they had started her Pitocin. She now 3cm dialated. It looks like I am going to be a friendAunt today!!! I will be leaving work in a couple hours (or less, if I get another call) so I can be there for the birth.
