I'm feeling really depressed about this lately. I am almost 17 weeks pregnant and have already gained 15 pounds. Every time I have an OB appointment coming up, I get panicky about getting on the scale. My OB doesn't seem to be concerned at all and tells me it all evens out at the end and for me not to worry. But I've been worried about my weight for years and have always struggled to keep it normal since dropping from 175 to about 125 five years ago. I was pretty much overweight my whole life. This is my first pregnancy and I guess I just wasn't expecting my body to pile on the pounds like its been doing. I'm afraid it will never come back off. :( To make matters worse, I had some spotting early in the pregnancy and my OB wouldn't allow me to go to the gym, so I think not exercising really accelerated the weight gain. I try really hard to eat healthy; staying away from junk foods, fried foods, sweets, etc. But that doesn't take away the fact that I still want to eat all of the time! I didn't really have much morning sickness, just always a feeling of being hungry. Oh, and I also followed a low carb diet, which my OB pretty much outlawed. I still don't do white breads or grains, but have added quite a bit more carbs in general than what my body is used to getting. I think thats another reason why the weight piled on quickly. Its just a bummer to watch this happen and know there is little that I can do about it. :( Anyone else?

Kym~ Can you turn backwards and/or ask them not to tell you how much you weigh or have gained? If your doctor isn't worried about it, then you should try to relax and enjoy the pregnancy and try not to dwell on the weight gain part of it (I know, easier said than done ;) ) I'm sorry you are feeling so bad and I hope you are able to come to peace with this inevitable aspect of pregnancy.

personally, i think the weight you have gained isn't really bad. you seem to be trying to be as healthy as possible, and that's the most important thing. i think its great that your dr. is not giving you a hard time about your weight. my cousin gained a lot of weight in pregnancy and the dr. made her feel really badly about it, and she would not drink any food or water a day or two before her ob appts bc she was afraid of the scale and the dr. that is definitely not healthy for a baby.

i am impressed that you aren't eating any refined carbs. i can't stomach much more than white bread and gatorade at this point. how many calories were you eating before pregnancy? was it a healthy amount for your weight? if not, you will need to eat a healthy amount of calories plus 300 calories more. you do need to eat more during pregnancy.

also, i do think that our metabolisms change during pregnancy. perhaps, yours has slowed down.

fwiw, i have noticed a lot of your posts and you seem to be very unhappy about the changes your body is making. its kinda weird for me to see my body going through some of these changes too, but i know they are all for a reason. one change i don't particularly like is that i used to have flawless skin which is now covered on tons of moles. at least, you can lose the weight eventually i don't think my moles will go away.

15 pounds at 17 weeks isn't horrible. Remember that everyone gains differently. I tend to gain it all towards the end. Others gain it all at the beginning. If you're eating healthy, you're doing great! If you are cleared for exercise, it wouldn't hurt - even if that is walking at the mall! Just get moving if you can. :)

Enjoy being pregnant and worry about taking the weight off after the baby gets here. And remember 9 months on, 9 months off - don't feel like you need to lose the weight the day you deliver. :)

I never really counted calories, just watched my carb intake and went to the gym 3-5 times weekly. I would never make a good anorexic person, I love food too much. :o The low carb thing works best for me and adding exercise was the magic combination.

I think the thing that makes me the most unhappy is the weight issue. The rest of it (nipples growing ever larger, headaches, etc) I know there is little I can do about. I think the worst thing about pregnancy for me personally is the fact that I've lost almost total control over my body and what it is doing. Not an easy thing for someone who is super paranoid about her weight to begin with. :o

I've lost almost total control over my body and what it is doing.

i feel the same way too. you are sharing your body with another life, so it really isn't only your's at this point. it has been more hard for my dh to get used to the fact that i can't do a lot of the things i normally could do. once i told him that my body was very busy growing another human, he kinda got it a bit more.

At 12 weeks, I had gained 10 pounds. My doctor wasn't concerned, but did mention it to me. In fact, his words were, "It's not going to be bad for the baby if you gain a little extra weight. The only thing is that you'll be fat." Um, yeah.

Of course, he also told me to stop drinking so much milk, because "it goes straight to your hips."

Hey Kym,

Just want to let you know that you are not alone. I've been feeling the same way right down to the prior weight loss and early gain.

I think the PP are all right though - and remember, it's all for a good cause! (not that I'm not also hoping my weight gain slows down in the second/third trimesters!)

I gained most of my pregnancy weight at the end (I was gaining 2-4lbs a week at the very end  ) and freaked, thinking I was gaining too much. My OBGYN had told me at the beginning of the pregnancy that the more weight you gain (after the 25-30lbs recommended) it's harder for the baby to push through the fat, so I was super worried. I ended up gaining 35lbs and when I went to my PP appt (at 7 weeks) I had lost 31 of them... Soooo I wouldn't worry too much. Like a PP said, 9 months on - 9 months off... Now if I could just get rid of this pooch :(

I just wanted to chime in and let you know that your weight gain could slow down as you get further along. Take me for example- I started gaining weight immediately and in one month, I gained 8lb:o By 21 weeks, I had gained 19lb and I was rather unhappy about it. But since then, I've only put on another 6lb and I'm just about 36 weeks right now. So in the end, it looks like I'm going to end up gaining the recommended 25-30lb total even though things weren't looking good in the beginning!

To give him credit, I drink about a gallon of milk a day. He was trying to let me know that the baby doesn't need that much milk (obviously). Of course, I've been drinking that much milk on a daily basis for years, so it's not like I am doing it for the baby. I'm doing it because I really, really love milk.

Did you just recently lose all that weight? Have you been restrictive with your diet until you got pregnant?

I ask because before getting pregnant with DD#1 I was hardcore into working out..like6 days a week, intense cardio/interval strength training and I was VERY restrictive with my diet. Besides alcohol (mostly wine) I at an almost complex carb free diet.

When I got pregnant I started eating carbs again (as that's what tasted good) and I gained a lot of weight-fast. I think by 12 weeks I had gained between 10-15 lbs. Way too much, but my Dr. wasn't worried at all and said often woman who are in shape tend to gain a lot of weight in the beginning. My total weight gain for the entire pregnancy was either 30 or 32 lbs. I can't remember which.

With this pregnancy, I'm 11 1/2 weeks and I've gained 3-4 lbs, because I wasn't as restrictive with my diet and excercise before getting pregnant.

I know it's hard to see your body change so much, especially at this point where it just feel flabby and it's not that nice pretty hard belly, but you will get there and it will be really awesome. Hang in there. You will lose it after. Really, you will.

Don't worry! You sound like you are eating sensibly and your doc isn't worried.

I got pregnant at one of my highest weights ever (170) and I was TERRIFIED of the weight gain. I had lost 20 lbs for my wedding (down to 150) and then gained it again after getting married. I am a super-fast gainer and was terrified I'd gain 50 pounds with the pregnancy, on top of my high starting weight.

Well, I ate like crap (I worked at a bakery. . . when I wasn't sick, I was eating!!), not even remotely close to what you do right now. I gained a total of 35/37 pounds (depending on water retention) and I am 3.5 months post partum and now weigh what I started. Granted, my tummy and chest are still bigger, but the weight is down.

So don't worry too much!! It will all come off. . . like another poster said. . . 9 months on, 9 months off. Your body will do what it *NEEDS* to do. If you eat well and even just walk, and keep gaining weight, then your body needs you to gain it!!
