I'm in a fairly odd situation. My dad is getting married this September, and he and L, his FW, are trying to insist on no wedding gifts, it's a second wedding, blah, blah, blah. Well of course we'll still be getting them a gift. Now her friend has called me to invite me to her bridal shower. She gave me less than a week warning (which is another whole peeve of mine!) and also mentioned (I'm paraphrasing): "Instead of making people feel obliged to bring a gift, we're going to set up a box for cash. You can just drop in whatever you feel like and L and B (she didn't say your dad, it sounded wierd to me!) can use it to get what they'd like. we're not really sure what they need, so this might be easier."
Ugh! Aside from me wanting to rip my hair out that I was invited at the last minute (I'll maybe give the friend the benefit of doubt and assume she "forgot" about my sister and I) now she's telling me basically to bring cash?!?!?! Anyway, I'm not going to. It would be soooo odd, especially considering that I'd basically be giving money to my dad. It might be different if I was pitching in with people tyo buy one large gift, but, anyway.
Gift suggestions? TIA!

Are they going on a honeymoon? Perhaps you could put together a basket of items for their honeymoon? Maybe a gift certificate for a nice restaurant at the location?
I'd feel funny giving them money also!

Hmmmm.....tough sometime to come up with gifts for "older" folks who usually have what they want/need already.
But you can always go with the "services" gifts:
GC for snow plowing, lawn mowing, etc.
You can create a coupon to be redeemed later (maybe they need a housesitter while away on vacation/honeymoon?)
Things like that tend to go over well.

Sicne they are having a box set up, perhaps you coulf get a gift certificate for somethign and put it in there? Something like a couples massage or portrait sitting for a new family photo might be really nice.

You are very talented at scrapbooking, do you have a nice pic of the 2 of them you could make a page up for? Or even a nice frame you could frame it in?
Or what about buying a album and write them a note saying your gift to them is a scrapbook to be filled with their wedding day memories? or a voucher type thing saying you will complete it?
OH, what about that wedding certificate holder I got for Tami? You could engrave their wedding date in it?

Oh, great ideas ladies, thanks!!!!!!
I love the honeymoon idea, but they still don't know where thay're going. I wish I did though.
Great ideas with the services gift cards as well, I'll talk to my sister about that. I think it's a toss up between a candle/frame idea and a gift card for some sort of service... we'll see which one.
Thanks again ladies!!!!!

I completely second this idea! Then no one knows you didn't "play by the rules", yet it's something more personal than just ca$h.
Restaurant g.f or couple's massage are great ideas!
