It looks like they're breaking down the contestants according to racial/ethnic identity again?

An interview with Jeff Probst from Survivor Fever:
Jeff Probst Talks "Survivor: Fiji"
Nineteen castaways?! Two Hidden Immunity Idols?! Luxurious campsite?! What the heck is going on with the next season of "Survivor"!? (At least they're not dividing the tribes by race again.) The Slug called Jeff Probst for every detail we could squeeze out of him about the Fiji-set edition of the CBS show, premiering Feb. 8. (And if you want to find out where those two Hidden Immunity Idols are hidden, you'll have to listen to the asap podcast.) The Q&A, after the jump. Unless you don't want to be spoiled. At all.
The Slug: First, let's review. Now that it's over and done, what did you think about "Cook Islands?"
Jeff Probst: I feel the same way now I felt about "Cook Islands" the second I felt after we finished the season, which was it was one of the five best seasons we've ever done. And I still feel that way. It was interesting to watch the arc that started with all this outrageous reaction to this idea we had and then quickly followed by "Oh! They bailed on it two weeks in!" followed by "This season isn't really that good. It's really boring." followed by "Oh my God! What a great ending! This is one of my favorite seasons ever!"
That's how it felt for me out there. Those emotions are the same emotions I felt. I wish we hadn't bailed as early as we did. The middle of the show waned a little bit. And the second we had the mutiny and we were down to a tribe of four, which were clear underdogs, it just kicked into high gear.
It finished very strong. If you're a fan of "Survivor," it had one of the best Tribal Council votes we ever had, two very likable, deserving people and one person won by one vote. And you could even trace that vote back to a move they made in the game and how they got that winning vote.
The Slug: Any regrets about the racial divide?
Jeff Probst: Zero. None. None! I'm glad it got people talking, if only for a moment. Personally, I'm happy that our show is more ethnically diverse. It's more fun. It's more interesting. So whatever road it took to get there, I think it's been good. And as a result, we had a much more interesting group in the "Cook Islands" and once again in "Fiji." We have a more interesting group just due to diversity and coming from different worlds.

More info about the upcoming season from People Magazine:
The granddaddy of all reality shows, Survivor, is back for a 14th season – this time with a connection to another hit reality program, Project Runway. Rita Verreos, 38, a former professional ballerina and the older sister of Project Runway veteran and fashion designer Nick Verreos, has joined Survivor: Fiji's band of castaways. "I only purchased cable TV when my brother was on a reality show," Rita, a part-time image consultant and full-time single mom, tells PEOPLE.
Before Survivor began filming at the end of October 2006, Rita and Nick had a talk about "reality" life. "I have not asked for advice," says Rita, "but he has told me to just be myself. He said the aftermath of the attention could be overwhelming. But a few years ago, I was in the Miss Venezuela pageant, so actually, I gave him the same advice before Project Runway!" Rita says she hopes fans will make a positive correlation between her and Nick. "Maybe the Verreoses can be like the Osbournes," she jokes, "or people will want the Rita and Nick Show!"
As for the show, this time around, the theme is Haves vs. Have Nots. The new series will begin with all of the contestants in a single tribe. All 19 adventurers are dropped off on an island near a natural cave and given supplies to make for a deluxe camp. But by the third day the group will be split into two and the tribe that wins the first immunity challenge will stay in relative luxury, while the losing tribe will be forced to move to a new island with only a pot, machete and a water source.
Elements of the last two seasons – Exile Island and a hidden immunity idol – will return but with a twist. This time, the person sent to Exile Island will look for clues to where an immunity idol is hidden somewhere at each tribe camp . This means there could be the tantalizing possibility of two hidden immunity idols being in play at the same time.
As for the figure of 19 participants instead of 20, one potential castaway cast herself off the show before it began. Melissa McNulty, a 28-year-old talent manager from Los Angeles, had been flown to Fiji before she decided to bow out of the game. Producers decided not to bring in an alternate and so the series continues with 19 castaways. Survivor: Fiji premieres on CBS on Feb. 8.

Is it just me, or are there a lot of foreign-born contestants this year? Should be very interesting!! I like seeing/learning about dynamics from people not born in the US. Shii-Ann was a prime example of that.
Also, it seems like there are reeeeeeeally really smart people (like VPs and such) and more run of the mill people (not saying they aren't smart, but they aren't running the IT department for the college of chemistry).

Wow it's starting already??? If I counted correctly, 10 of the 19 are from California, hardly seems fair.

Yes, but California is the most populous and diverse state, so it's not surprising that so many contestants end up being Californians. I'm sure it's also because Survivor does a lot of scouting in their own backyard, as well.
Anyone else watch the preview on TV Guide Channel? This season looks really interesting. I can't believe it starts in just a few days!

I already know how I cant stand. Dreamz- and what kind of a name is that anyway- can blow me. Hes obnoxious.
I liked Jessica, but obviously nobody else did.
Its early so not surprising I havent already picked a favorite, but nobody is really appealling to me even a bit yet.
Im a little annoyed by the fact that the one tribe is living in luxury- what the hell kind of Survivor is that? A couch? Get real.
I love that the immunity idol is back at camp and Im wondering which exile victim is going to bust that secret out first.
I liked how they had to go 2 days without knowing what the hell was going and seeing Jeff. And somebody quit before it even started? Interesting.

Stupid me forgot to set the DVR to record the series, so I missed the first 10 minutes of the show. Oh well, looks like nothing really happened anyway since they were just getting to the campsite.
Yeah, Dreamz is a bit much. I'm not sure if I like Rocky yet or not. Nobody has really "impressed" me but it's still early. And I don't think any guys is hot so I can't go that route again like in the past (Ozzie, Austin, etc). :o
Glad it's back on though, now I get to look forward to Thursday nights again!

I liked Jessica, but obviously nobody else did.
I did! I felt bad for her. She really didn't do anything wrong, except be a little slow at the challenge. She worked hard and was personable. I guess if you're small and not super athletic, you really have to make up for it in other ways at challenges.
Im a little annoyed by the fact that the one tribe is living in luxury- what the hell kind of Survivor is that? A couch? Get real.
I agree. I don't like it. At all.
I thought I was going to find James (aka Rocky) super annoying, but I don't thus far. He's kinda fun. However, I'm dubious that he'll be a great player. If he really wanted to keep his alliance with Jessica intact he should have worked a little harder to keep her around. I didn't see him out there trying to strike any deals. Maybe he just didn't want to get too political right off the bat?
Okay, so I have Boo as my MVP. And now I'm a little worried, after seeing the preview for next week! I still think he can go the distance, though. And I like Alex and Edgardo as well. Not seeing a lot of girls I like right off the bat, which is unusual.

I went with Edgardo, and after the first episode, I think I'll keep him as MVP.

Question - does the team living in Luxury always stay that way - or can they lose it by losing an immunity challenge? (ala the Apprentice?)
I felt really bad for Sylvia - building the place and then she won't get to live there. I wonder if they would have sent two people to Exile Island if they had 20 instead of 19?

I would guess that they can lose it. And I thought I read a quote from Mark Burnett somewhere saying that they planned this twist quite a while ago and were very suprised to see that The Apprentice was doing it also. He sort of insinuated that Apprentice had stolen their idea.
ETA: Actually, it was Probst who said that. Mark Burnett produces both shows, so he obviously would have known.

I was thinking that they probably would have waited until episode 2 to exile someone? Don't know if that makes sense...

Robyn..I kind of know the answer to that question but its a spoiler big time. I'll post it in white, but don't highlight it unless you really want to know:
From everything I've read, Moto actually holds the luxury camp for a good chunk of the game. The producers and writers were so desperate to change the game up and give the other tribe a shot at the camp, that they end up forcing them (Moto) out through a game twist. I don't know how reliable that info is, but the site I got it from was about 99% on the money all last season.
ETA: I have actually found a few good little spoilers for the game! For instance (in white)
Another player quits the game about halfway through. I'll have to look up the name but I know its the older heavyset white guy with glasses...Gary, I think his name is.

Do you have on-demand? Some cable companies (like Comcast) offer certain shows on certain channels as on-demand choices, for a small fee. And I think you may be able to watch it online at CBS' website.

At least someone shares my sentiments about those two. I cannot staaaaaaaand either one of them and wanted to kick my tv in watching them race the last time. Besides that, the fact that this will be the combined fifth time that they get a shot a million bucks makes me want to throw up.
Anyway. Back to Survivor chat. Which I can't do yet because I haven't watched last night's episode yet. :o

This is my one pet peeve about this show. It really, really bugs me that they make water deprivation a part of the game. I'm sorry, but water isn't a luxury or an option, its a necessity! Its impossible for the human body to function without it and you are weakened rapidly when deprived of it. I drink a gallon or more every day and absolutely cannot imagine going without it for a day, much less multiple days.

I was thinking that because they have now separated the reward and immunity challenges, they changed Exile Island. They sent Sylvia after the reward challenge. I'm just glad she is gone!

I agree, Sylvia was bugging the crap out of me. I was HOPING she didn't find the idol. But there were a few people who saw her digging, I'm wondering if someone will think about looking for it now?
The water thing is horrible. SO glad they got fire though...and a flint now. They have ALWAYS supplied the tribe with a watering hole. I wonder why not this time. It really bugs me that the two tribes live SO differently. I don't think I like it.
As for Sylvia's plastic surgery, I don't know. I am just wondering if its her genetics...she looks asian or of that region. People of that decent usually have very good skin and stays that way for a long time. Just my thought.

SO glad that Sylvia is gone. She completely bugged.
I also don't like the differences between the two camps. One tribe is struggling so badly and the other isn't even having to play the game! It really makes things uneven and unfair, IMO.
Just noticed the title for next week's episode and it's pretty funny:
03/01 Survivor: Fiji - "Let's Just Call Jeff On The Jeff Phone."

A couple of questions...
Why are the sea snakes only on Exile Island and not around the camps? I find it weird that the sea snakes only live around one small area.
Why was Papa Smurf the only one with bites? Weird.
Moto is going to self-destruct. What a stupid choice to keep the camp over a person. And Lisi is a bitch. She should have been the one to go. I can't believe how rude she was about Gary and Liliana.

I was just reading an interview with Papa Smurf on TVGuide.com. He talks about his health. Here's a brief excerpt:
TVGuide.com: They patched you all up?
Gary: Yeah, it was more that I had them bug-bite deals....
TVGuide.com: What were those bugs?
Gary: Looking back at it, I think we had a problem with ants on the deck where we were sleeping, and they might have been fire ants. The wife looked it up on the Internet, and I totally had classic symptoms of fire-ant bites. They can cause a shortness of breath and all the symptoms I had. If you don't treat it, sometimes you can have an allergic reaction, and you end up dying, so it was good that we got it taken care of.

Papa Smurf had an allergic reaction to Fire Ant Bites. Technically there was nothing wrong with him, but the allergic reaction was making him feel weak and like he couldn't catch his breath - in that situation I always wonder why they couldn't just give him a shot and let him go back, I mean they've already got one team with so many luxuries they can't really claim to be "surviving" IMO.
Dreamz, Lisi and Stacy all annoy the crap out of me.
I was SO glad to see RITA go, she never shut up and was so weak in the physical challenges. Did it seem like they changed their minds at tribal when she was talking about "entertaining" them - I could have sworn they gave each other nods like they were changing their whole strategy.

I thought tonight was pretty interesting. It was especially funny when (insert her name here) fell off the platform...I'm glad she wasn't hurt, she seemed to laugh about it after she got back up there. I'm also happy that Yaman (or however you spell his name) got the Imunity Idol. And I thought it was pretty tricky how he made another one and buried it. I wonder what would happen should someone else get the clues and find the "fake" Idol and try to play that at TC. Wouldn't that be hilarious? Jeff's expression would be priceless!
Lisi wasn't as annoying as she has been. Maybe because she's the only girl there now. She has nobody to gossip with or make fun of others with. I still don't like her much.
I'm glad the vote worked out how it did. But what a dumbass when Rocky said that they'll be sorry because he's on the jury. Uh, did I miss something? Jeff said nothing about him being on the jury!

I'm happy Lisi got the boot last night. She was too indecisive and I can see where that might be a detriment later on. Also, how much more did she think they were going to take of her calling them a bunch of punks and losers? She said something like "As long as these guys are in a team together, they will continue to be losers." Yeah, like that's gonna get you a vote! Granted, they are losers, but you don't say that to their face and it makes you a loser for saying that, pouting about it and threatening to make a grand exit and then changing your mind.
I loved the tribal dance challenge. It was different and to see them all shakin' their thing was pretty cute. And Yau-man really kicked butt on the immunity challenge.
Dreamz clearly doesn't know how to play the game. To sit their and tell your team that you are in an alliance with a person from another team. Duhhhhh!
It's going to be interesting to see how the 3 immunity idol finders are going to play that out. That's gotta be good. One person already said it's in "his" pocket when it gets down to it, but I don't think it's gonna happen as easily as he thinks.

This was my take on the vote: Probst asked everyone why they should vote out one other Survivor. Then he asked Alex and he said " I have no reason to vote out Stacy ( or whoever he was first asked about.) Then Probst goes and has him answer that question about everyone- not just one other person like all the others had to.When he got to Michele, he gave a different answer ( I can't recall it) but all the other answers were identical to his reply about Stacy. A bit later Dreamz tells Jeff that Alex basically let them know who he was voting for ( interpreted to mean Michele since his answer about her was more vague.) I think Dreamz thought Alex was telling him and Mookie to vote for Michele and Dreamz wrongly concluded that if he didnt' vote that way, both Alex and Mookie would be mad at him.
Either way, it's a crying shame that they booted Michele when that mean Stacy could have gotten voted off instead!
And how lousy that Earl didnt' conclude that the best strategy would have been to throw the challenge and get rid of Edgardo ( who I like but isn't in the alliance of my favorites.) It all happened too fast. That said, great episode last night ( except for the Michele vote:(

I think Dreamz thought Alex was telling him and Mookie to vote for Michele and Dreamz wrongly concluded that if he didnt' vote that way, both Alex and Mookie would be mad at him.
I think that's what he was thinking also. I think he was torn not knowing if Mookie was going to do what Alex wanted them to do, or try and vote Stacy out since that was what he and Mookie had talked about. He was afraid to go out on a limb not knowing for sure that Mookie was going to do the same thing. He has no guts and it's going to cost him this game.
I didn't think it was fair that Alex got a chance to answer about everyone when the others didn't. Probst shouldn't have asked him about anyone else. It should have just been one like everyone else.

It wasn't the brightest idea for Mookie to let Dreamz know about the II. Obviously Dreamz can't keep a secret or his mouth shut!
What a great twist to take away the luxury camp, although I would have liked to see them live on Exile Island.

Gotta say, I'm so glad that Earl's alliance is now in control. I really like Earl, Cassandra and Yao Man. Edgardo was okay, but I can't stand Mookie and Alex-- and the smugness factor amongst the 4 horsemen was ridiculous. What is Earl's alliance calling itself, The Syndicate?? Go Syndicate!!

ITA best episode of the season BY FAR! DH and I were loving tribal council and the looks on Mookie and Alex's face was priceless. Earl was trying so hard not to laugh at them. it was great.
I totally didn't like Stacy b4 last night, but I gotta give her credit...it was her idea to kick off Edgardo! I kinda felt bad for Stacy too, when she was the answer for all of the questions during the challenge (person you never want to see again etc)
re: the previews....I see that Mookie goes through Yao's stuff...which is so wrong, but can he steal the idol??? are there any "rules" about stuff like that?
I also don't get the smugness from Alex/Mookie in the previews..they are totally outnumbered now and whoever doesn't win immunity next week should be gone hopefully.
I am rooting for Earl and Yao for the final 2!

Why would Mookie be allowed to steal the idol from Yau? Thats just not even fair, nor cool!
Although I loved the strategy and the best tribal council (faces were priceless!), I'd have still voted Mookie. He's such a jerk!
I think Dreamz did show his loyalty, but it was too late, and they didn't know whether to "really" believe him or not.

I'm betting that they don't steal the idol from Yao-Man, but that they strategize based on the knowledge of him having it. Maybe I'm being naively nice here, but I just can't imagine them sinking so low as to steal it!

Even knowing about Yao Man's idol won't help Mookie & Alex now, I think. If you figure the alliances break down like this:
Syndicate: Earl, Cassandra, Yao Man, Boo, Dreamz, Stacy
Four Horsemen: Alex, Mookie
The Syndicate should be able to make quick work of Alex and Mookie. Then they'll target Stacy and Boo, who are really on the fringes of their alliance. Earl's firmly in control at this point.
Kimberland30
04-24-2007, 07:38 AM
I think that "4 Horsemen" was a pretty stupid name anyway, and I'm glad that alliance is breaking up. I think "The Syndicate" did a good thing by not telling Dreamz about deciding to vote off Edguardo (although he was the best looking one on the island LOL).
Yeah, Dreamz told the Syndicate that Mookie had the immunity idol. But then Mookie gave it to Alex after Dreamz told them that Alex was going to be voted off. So then Dreamz tells Synd that Alex now has the idol..why would they tell him that they were going to vote off Edguardo instead? Dreamz just backed himself into a corner by playing both sides. It will be interesting to see what Mookie and Alex said to him after TC.
I've liked Earl since the begining but did have him pegged as winning it all. I really like Yao-Man and think he can be seen as a threat soon. I hope that Alex and Mookie get voted off because they've bothered me since the start.
Looks like Boo hurts himself again this week. That man is so accident prone, it's hilarious but sad at the same time.

Yes, Alex voted for Mookie. He said something like, sorry man, but I have to try and stay around for at least one more day. I don't really understand it. His vote didn't mean anything in the end.
Chris~n~Jen
04-27-2007, 08:14 AM
Actually his vote kept him on the island. The vote was supposed to be 3-Mookie, 3-Alex (with mookie and alex voting for whomever else), thereby forcing a tie and then they would all re-vote and vote off Alex. If Mookie had voted Alex then there would still have been a tie and Alex would have gone. But since that didn't happen, it was Alex's vote that made the vote 4-mookie, 3-alex. I actually thought it was a pretty smart move on his part and was wondering why mookie didn't also vote alex.
At least that's the way I understond it was supposed to go down, unless something happened that I missed.

Question about the immunity idol: Am I just remembering wrong, or last week when Alex gave up the immunity idol at TC did Jeff make him reveal/give it up BEFORE the vote took place? That made no sense to me because once you reveal you have it, everyone who was going to vote for you will just go with their Plan B and vote for someone else instead. This week Jeff said if anyone had and wanted to play an immunity idol they should do it after the votes are cast but before they are read. That makes more sense, but for some reason I thought it happened differently last week.

What an interesting finale! Dreamz so sucked ass for going back on his word like that. I don't know that he really had planned to renege on his deal. I think he just now wants to sound like some tough hardball player. I could be wrong, but he was sitting there crying and looked like he really felt bad about going back on his word. Plus throughout this whole game, he just seemed so weak and soemtimes immature at times, almost like he couldn't think for himself. It really showed when he was caught between Earl's alliance and the 4 Horsemen's alliance. He was being pulled from both sides and really "acted" like he was unsure of himself. Maybe he knew what he was doing all along like he said, but it just didn't seem like it.
The questions from the jury were ticking me off. I mean haven't they figured out that Survivor is a game. Why people continue to be pissed off that they got played and betrayd is beyond me. Get over it! For season after season, people have been lied to and backstabbed, so they would have to expect that this would happen. Alex and Lisi were both just ridiculous in their line of questioning....idiots! Boo was kinda on my nerves too. I'm a Christian too, but I just didn't see where he was going with his questions. It seemed like he really just wanted to make a point, so he just should have "schooled" Dreamz by making his point about growing up as a Christian and sat down. His questions was stupid. Of course Dreamz wasn't thinking about being a "good Christian" when he made that decision....duhhhhhh!!

Since 2nd and 3rd place were a tie (zeroes for both of them... hah!!) do they split the $100k 2nd prize? Do they each get 100k, or neither? How does that work? They never said on the reunion show.

Happy fopr Earl, as he was my orignial pick, but YaoMan was definitely the best player.
re: Dreamz--I was totally surprised he didn't keep his word. I mean, how could he not have known that he didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning anyway, and if he had kept his word, someone like Rosie O or Ellen would have totally hooked him up!
Since 2nd and 3rd place were a tie (zeroes for both of them... hah!!) do they split the $100k 2nd prize? Do they each get 100k, or neither? How does that work? They never said on the reunion show.
I would assume they'd take 2nd place ($100k) and 3rd place ($85k) and split it among the two of them ($92.5k for each of them). Honestly, I was surprised that Dreamz didn't live up to his word OR give the car back. Taxes will kill him and now people who would've rewarded his honesty (as msnicolea said) are going to ignore him.
As Oprah can verify, you have to pay taxes on a free car, even if it is a gift. ;)

Lisi was totally batshit crazy last night. The girl must have no idea how many 0s are in a million. And what was with asking Cassandra about her shoes? What the heck did that have to do with anything?
Alex was a pathetic sore loser! He did a disservice to himself as a lawyer with that poor attempt at cross-examining the F3. And Mookie? Listen to the questions asked previously. I don't know if there has ever been such annoying people on the jury.
I'm still pissed at Dreamz. To sit there at the reunion at at TC so smugly instead of at least offering to give the truck back makes me think he has no freaking clue what a loser he is. Here's hoping the taxes on the truck and what he won takes the smirk off his face!
OTOH, China looks great! Hopefully Exile Island will be no more.

I was so pissed that Yao-Man didn't get in the final 3, but I understand why Earl did what he did (and it was the only way Earl could win it). I also think I'm seeing more clearly on what Dreamz did, I Don't think Dreamz believed he could win the $1million, but *maybe* he wanted Earl to win the $1million more than he wanted Yao to win it (which would suck b/c Yao gave him the car)? Could that explain why he went back on his word? Grasping at straws here, but how could Dreamz have believed he would win?
I was also disappointed that Ford didn't give away a second car in the reunion show, where the Survivors vote who deserves it most (i.e. Yao).
And yes, Dreamz deserves to pay the taxes on the truck - I guess he can use his winnings on that.
How much $ does Yao get for coming in 4th? He still was my favorite player through the entire season.

For anyone who's still reading this thread, there's an excellent interview with Yau Man: “I Have Gotten Over It” – An Interview with Survivor: Fiji’s Yau-Man (http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=1&article=article6972.art&page=1)
RNO: You’re a better man than I.
Yau-Man: I don’t want to have to live with this for the rest of my life. Life is too short, you have to move on. I’d like to see how he lives with it. He made a decision with 20 million people watching. He’s going to live the rest of his life trying to fix that one.
RNO: Do you believe Dreamz’ claim that he was playing you all along, or do you think he intended to keep his word and then changed his mind?
Yau-Man: I think he intended to keep his word but when he made that promise, he had not thought through the whole thing. When he had time to think about it, he decided that was not what he really wanted to do. He changed his mind. I don’t think he’s capable of such organized thought at the time he accepted my deal.
