View Full Version : Non-scale victories!

jennylou

Sometimes, weightloss and weight watchers, just isn't about what the scale says. It can also be about the non-scale victories (herein called NSVs). Did someone tell you that you're looking like you've lost weight? Did a pair of previously tight pants suddenly fit? Did you make wise dining out decisions? Did you progress in your exercising?

Share those victories here!

I'll start.

Last night, bil and sil invited us over for dinner. The menu: mac and cheese and hot dogs. DH loves these two food items. We hadn't seen them for a while, so I said sure, why not.

But, I packed my own dinner. A salad and a Smart Ones lasagna. I was so proud of myself for not caving and just eating what they were all eating.

Good idea for a thread! And good job for bringing your own dinner (I don't know if I could turn down mac & cheese!).

I exercised 6 days this week. I've never done that before in my life!

I haven't had a beer or glass of wine in over a week. I generally gave on weekends and will have one or two. Not yet! :)

Passed on cake at work the other day. I love cake, so it took everything inside me to fight the urge.

I went to the movies last night, and even though I was hungry I didn't buy anything (including the chocolate I was craving for!)

I hope to get into my size 2 jeans soon, to really celebrate a NSV!

i always get so embarassed when people start telling me how good i look, and that i lost weight. i don't know why, but i do.
i am 20 lbs lighter than i was this time last year, and when i see people i havn't seen in a long time, they go on and on, and i get soo embarassed

A co-worker brought a dessert to work yesterday that was to die for. It looked like laysers of chocolate mousse, whipped cream, chocolate cake and cherries. I wanted some so, so bad. But, I resisted and finally, it was gone and I didn't have to fight it anymore

I have been consistently running nearly every day on my treadmill, since the beginning of the year--and this time I'm actually sticking with it. And I feel great!

Other NSV - I'm losing weight in the boobs, so I may opt to NOT have the breast reduction I've been thinking about. It'll be nice to save all that money, AND not undergo major surgery.

Embarassed? No way! Don't be embarrassed! Be proud!!! It's a wonderful accomplishment and you should absolutely be proud of it.

hmmm, I'm thinking some sugar free chocolate pudding, coolwhip lite or Fat Free even, some "less sugar" canned cherries by comstock, and alittle more coolwhip on top for a not so high in points dessert....

Great idea for a thread Jenny.

Great idea for a thread, jennylou! I know I wouldn't have been able to bring my own dinner and sacrifice the mac & cheese. Way to go!

I've been subjecting my LJ friends to my progress pictures too, and they've been telling me how awesome I look. So that's my NSV for today :)

Saturday night we went out to dinner and I didn't have soda - I used to never drink soda but once I got pregnant I couldn't get enough of it and have been drinking it since for the caffeine since I don't drink coffee. I haven't had just water at a restaurant in a long, long time.

Plus last night during football I refrained from eating a ton of munchies - I wasn't hungry and I didn't want to eat crap just because I felt like I should because a football game was on.

I procrastinated and was panicking about what to wear to a baby shower a few weeks ago. In desperation I grabbed dress slacks that almost fit the last time I tried them on; I figured I could do the hair elastic trick with the button. They turned out to be baggy!

Also, two male coworkers said I'd lost a lot of weight. Since men rarely notice if we dye our hair purple, I thought it was a good sign.

My coworkers love chocolate and i love dark chocolate, so they bring me the dark pieces. Today I turned them down and even had to walk by them several times.

Another little thing - I've been in such the habit of buying the 20 oz coke (I can't stand the taste of Diet) which is by the cash register at the caf at work, instead of getting the 12 oz one from the vending machine in the caf. I feel that everyone is staring at me at the vending machine (I know, phobia from elementary school). But today I went to the vending machine. No coke would have been better but I made a 3 pt decision over a 5 pt decision.

Awesome thread and great job everybody!

In September, I bought a new pair of jeans, which fit, if a bit snuggly, when I tried them on in the store. But the first time I went to wear them, I couldn't even zip them up.
Fast forward to last night as I was cleaning out the closet and I tried them on again and they fit, much better than they had in the store!

jennylou

Great NSV's!

TX Sweetheart - that's awesome - soon they'll be too big!

sol - I bet you'll be zipping them up soon.

jessie - baby steps, right?

Katy - good for you!

Dan'sGirl - good for you for cooking AND resisting chocolate.

Andrea - did you avoid the pizza?

Thanks for sharing, you all inspire me to keep going and to look for victories that are not just scale related. :)

another great thread. *subscribing*

*my best friend gave me a bunch of her old jeans. since i know (or at least think by the way i see myself in the mirror) that she is skinnier than me i did not have the nerve to try them on. after two weeks i finally got the nerve and tried them on and they all fit. some of them are 12s and some of them are 8s! All pants run different but hey, i'll take it!

*my size 10 tommy jeans that i bought in septemeber are LOOSE on me now. i'll wi tomorrow and we'll see if the pounds show a loss.:)

*i had surgery on my hand last week and have been in pain and on pain meds. i have been dying for some comfort food but have resisted. i did eat more points than usual this week since i need a decent amount of food for the percoset not to have me flying but i still stayed on plan!

greenbunny

That's really impressive that you're resisting after surgery! Wow!

Yesterday at the grocery store I resisted the family packs of Tastykakes that were the cheapest I've ever seen them. It was painful.

However, I did not resist the Ring Ding my coworker offered me at lunch. :o

I got married in July, and tried on my wedding dress last week, and it was a little big! It was pretty snug the day of my wedding, so I was ecstatic. I've been doing WW with Turbo Jam for almost two months and have lost 8 pounds and 2.5 inches in my waist! That doesn't sound like much, but I don't have much to lose. YAY!

That's great Ashley! You looked fantastic in your wedding gown, so you must be feeling fabulous right now!

My NSV is that I went out to my usual trail yesterday, which I hadn't been to in months, and picked up with my old routine without feeling out of shape. It doesn't seem like much, but I'm feeling proud of myself. It's a 5.2 mile trail, and I was able to jog about 2 miles of it in intervals. Woohoo!

I needed some cheap capris since the weather started warming up and hit up Old Navy. I found rack with roll up cargo capris for $6.97  They did have my size, so I picked the size up thinking they'd be big, but I'd make do for a bit until I could fit into the second, a size below me, pair.

Well, I was curious after my WI (showing a loss this month instead of the 5 pound gain I was expecting!) and I tried on the smaller pair. They fit FINE!!! I've been wearing them all day. I guess I'll mail off the larger pair to my friend  Even though I'm out the $6.97 it was a great mistake!!

I have had a few NSW these past couple of days...

* I went out with Mobox the other day and sat there while she ate her lunch (since I ate after WI before meeting up). I even buttered a slice of bread for her without indulging.

* I went to a birthday at a bar last night and managed to avoid the fried onion rings and only had one drink!!

* and of course, we still have the finding new, smaller, cuter clothes in my closet - including my Gap pants!! That's always a good thing.

I know there were quite a few more, since I remember thinking, "wow, what a great NSW that was!" but I can't recall them right now.

ETA: oh yeah...smaller undies :D

Awesome job ladies!

My NSV comes from Easter Vigil. I had one outfit planned out, but it ended up way too cold (hello, snow, where were you on Christmas this year?) and ended up frantically trying to find something to wear. I ended up in a pair of dress pants that were really saggy on me - and they were the best of the bunch. :) So, now I don't have a single pair of dress pants that fit!

I stated in the "Death Row last-meal" thread that Tollhouse cookies would be my 1 food I could eat forever. I was trying to use up all the the "bad" stuff in our house, plus my parents were coming over, so I made some. I didn't eat any batter!(I've never ever done that except when I was pg and I didn't want to eat the raw eggs). Plus there were 3 cookies leftover when my parents left. DH was horrified when I threw them away. To me, money/waste is no object when I am trying to loose weight - if I need to buy something and have a nibble and throw it away so I won't eat anymore, then I will. Will power is something I lack, so down the drain certain things need to go.

[I am not trying to say I didn't have any of the cookies! I had a few, just didn't let myself eat too many]

Today for lunch I had a Lean Cusine Comfort Food meal. It was only 3 pts and I was psyched to use so few pts for lunch today. Then when I went to make it, the back said to cook for 11 1/2 mins!! There was already a line to use the microwave and I only get a 30 minute lunch so I put it back in the freezer. Now hungry I took my change to the vending machine and DESPERATELY wanted the spicy chicken sandwich with cheese, BUT instead I got a cup of peaches in juice:D :D :D

Sorry it took me so long to come back, i didnt get my notification

Its just a type of Lean Cuisine. It is typically a smaller portion (this one was 3 pts) but it is chicken and rice or potatoes or mac n cheese. Check out the different types in the freezer section. Sometimes I would rather pair a smaller LC with a salad, and sometimes I just want the convenience of one larger meal.

Another one-I saw the husband of one of my friend's today and the first thing he said was "Wow you look great!" I really haven't lost much weight since I saw him last probably over a year ago but my body shape has changed a lot from working out so much and I've lost a lot of inches. Weight training works wonders! Anyways..it made me feel good! :D

Good job everyone!

Today someone brought in a bagel platter and regular cream cheese. I didn't have any, although I did stand next to it and breathe in the freshly-baked smell for a few minutes. Yeah, I looked like a freak. :p

Yesterday I came into work and there was a HUGE chocolate cake... even though it called to me and I REALLY wanted some, I resisted and did not have any!

The bad part is a co-worker has decided that we will all be assigned to bring in cake each month, even if there are no birthdays to celebrate, and she is the type where if you ask her to reconsider she gets all defensive and hateful  :(

I had a big victory today. A friend and I had her birthday lunch today at the Pizza Hut buffet. Here's what I just posted over on SparkPeople (http://www.sparkpeople.com): Okay, I'm back from lunch. I did so-so for what my daily caloric intake is, but really, really good for me.

I had:
2 salads - lettuce, cheese, kidney beans, egg, few bacon bits (one just one), broccoli, dressing
1 slice of handtossed veggie lovers pizza

Usually I load up my salad with mulitple scoops of everything, but today I only did one scoop of each ingredient. I guess it didn't help though that I had two. :o I usually load up on the pizza, pasta, and breadsticks as well - clearing over 1500 calories in one meal - so my 900 calorie meal while not good is a far cry better than "normal".

This is small, but my co-workers were ordering lunch today from my FAVORITE place...I almost waivered, but resisted, and stuck with the WW-friendly lunch I packed!

I have to admit though...as good as it felt to resist,it makes me a little sad to have to make choices like this! Some food just tastes SO good, damnit!

Okay, so I quit doing WW and switched to SP. I just couldn't afford to pay for WW anymore. But I figure I can still post my NSV's here, right? :)

For the last three days I have stayed within my calorie range, and exercised! I'm trying to resist weighing myself every day because I think I'm getting a bit obsessed, but it's so hard not to sneak a peek!! :p

Exactly, screw the scale! I tried to reason with mine, but to no avail. I'm listening to my body now, and using clothing as a gauge, instead of looking for some magical number. :)

Well I forgot to post my most recent NSV - I ran my first ever 5K,

A woman just came in who is the wife of one of the guys I work with. We met at last year’s Christmas party. She said I CAN’T BELIEVE how much weight you lost; you look great! I thanked her and told her I had only lost 10 pounds or so and she was like NO WAY YOU LOOK LIKE A NEW PERSON. Made me feel great. Even if the scale doesn’t show it, maybe I do look better.:)

JennW: That's great! I think sometimes from exercising and stuff we tone up and not really drop scale weight but we drop fat which make us look like we've lost more.

I told my mom last night I had lost 12 lbs and she said "I know, I could tell last week when I saw you that you had lost" - Coming from my mom, that is huge! Gives me even more incentive to kick it up a notch since I usually see her every week and now I won't see her for 6 weeks.

Actually wearing my pre-pg jeans today...and yesterday I changed my pants because I determined they looked horrible on me because they were too big.

For the first time in I don't know how long, I was able to run up the stairs from our floor seats to the mezzanine level to head off to the bathroom without getting winded during last night's concert. This was such cool thing that I actually stopped at the top and noted how easy the stairs were this time around - I usually have to either take it slow or take a rest once I get up to the top (complete with a little huffing and puffing). Nice I tell ya!

Well I normally lurk in here but I have 2 NSV. I bought size 7 panties this weekend AND they are a little big, could have bought a 6. After years of size 9 and 10's I thought it was pretty great. My other NSV is the tilt steering column in my car. I could never put it all the way down because it would rub my thighs and I couldn't manuever the steering wheel properly, but yesterday I put the tilt on the lowest setting and still had a couple inches before it hit my thighs!!! YAY for the littlest victories!!!!!:):):)

2 small ones:

First: started going back to the gym on Monday and have started the "bust the flab on the rear end" regime.

Second: gym is closed today (holiday) and instead of parking myself on the couch, hubby and I went for a nice long walk in our neighborhood. no idea how long the walk was, but it's the fact that I did it!

Our office celebrates everyone's birthdays individually with a cake. Yesterday was the first one since I started WW. Cake is my favorite thing... especially Shaws cake w/ suger frosting. Of course, it was my favorite kind.

I wasn't even tempted to have a piece, and I really didn't feel like I missed anything by passing.

I travel a bit for my job, and I frequently bring my exercise clothes with me so I can work out at the hotel when I am on the road. Great thread!! (And great NSV's ladies!)

I've been told I look like I've lost weight twice in the last month, by my friends DH, and my mom. AND I put on some oldskool Clavin Kleins from maybe 13 years ago and they FIT. (Mind you I cant sit comfortably since there is no spandex, but I look HOT standing.) ;)

I'm not on WW - but wanted to post here anyway.

I just lost another inch in each thigh! Woo hoo! Guess the Elliptical really is doing some work.

I just had to post that, because my thighs are always thick - but with weight gain they are quite yucky, so that is exciting. :p

I don't work nights, but I started drinking water instead of coffee, and once my body went through caffeine withdrawal, I found that water gave me a much better lift than coffee or soda.

I bought size 10 jeans. SIZE 10!!! :D:D:D I've been wearing my size 14s since I started WW. They started off too tight, so once they started to feel loose I figured they must be stretched out from wearing them at my heaviest when I was refusing to buy bigger. I went jean shopping. The 12s were a bit loose, so I tried 10s. They fit perfect. I got teary in the dressing room.:o

Bumping this up to share a couple of recent ones......

I've pretty much given up my late night snack of popcorn!! Now I just need to work on the other one - chips! ;)

I'm back in my pre-pgcy clothes, and DS is only 9 weeks old!

I didn't have any cake and didn't eat my baked potato with dinner at my sister's wedding this past weekend.

Today, I gave up my usual dessert of chocolate pie when we eat at a particular restaurant in town!

Anybody else have any recent ones to share?

The bridesmaid dress I ordered (and fit perfectly) 2 weeks before I started WW is so big on me my seamstress (MIL) has decided a lace up back would be best so we make sure it fits next month! She's also worried it won't look right because it's too too big!

Also my 14's that didn't fit before, are loose and making me look, as DH so eloquently put it, like I crapped my pants.... er.... i think its a good thing? lol
