My husband and I are considering having a lawn sprinkler system installed. What is your experience with one? What was the price range? Do you feel it was worth the money? We live in Kentucky, so it is not a necessity, but setting up and moving sprinklers everyday during the summer droughts is a pain!

We would not have a lawn without a sprinkler system. We live in sand. Not sandy soil, it's actually a glacial deposit of sand that created a special environment. This required a great deal of watering to get anything to grow. I would have been awful to move the sprinklers twice a day. We spend roughly $3500 for 10 zones. It's set up to water the lawn and there are 4 zones dedicated to the flower beds and shrubs that have special heads.
You can buy zones at a time as long as your initial box that is put in can support them. We put in the front lawn and front beds first (4 zones). This past summer we added the remaining zones.

Our house had one when we moved in, so I don't know what it cost. It's pretty convenient to have. It was broken for about a month this past summer and it was a PITA to set up and move a hose-connected-sprinkler every other day.
Just something to look into when you're selecting your system, somehting I dislike about ours is that we can set a schedule for watering, but only one schedule. For instance, I'd like to water the flower beds every day and the lawn twice a week, but my system isn't able to do that. Every day is either set to "on" or "off". So either everything gets watered or nothing gets watered on any given day. So I set mine for just two days and water the flower beds w/ a hose on non-sprinkler days. I hope that made a little sense. Reading back over it seems confusing :) Basically get a good control center with lots of options.
good luck
