Okay, I took two of the Save-on-tests HPTs that initially had very faint positives and they disappeared after about 30 minutes. So then I figured I'd take a FRER and surely that would give me an accurate result. Same thing! I got a positive result that later disappeared. Has this happened to anyone else??? If so, what was the end result? These HPTs are playing games with my head.

I think you're supposed to read them only at the specified time limit. Afterwards, it doesn't count as a BFP, so I don't think I would call the dissappearing one a BFN.
My suggestion is to go get a digital test.

Maybe it's because I'm testing early. Do the digitals pick up as early as FRER?

No, digitals aren't as sensitive as the FRERs.

It should have nothing to do with testing early. I tested and got a BFP (faint) at 9dpo and it never dissapeared.

peeonastick.com has recorded some issues with FRER and disappearing positives but they indicate it's with the older version of FRER's. Here is what they say:
3. Answer Early & First Response Early Result: issues with disappearing "positive" lines ongoing issue; latest report in October 2006
Please note: both tests have recently been redesigned. The reports all pertain to the old test design.
Many women have contacted me regarding these brands of tests (interestingly, both tests are manufactured by the same company.) These women have noted that shortly after applying urine to the tests, a pink result line appears in addition to a pink control line (a "positive" result.) However, anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours later, the pink result line disappears completely, appearing to be a negative test.
Both the First Response Early Result and Answer Quick & Simple Early Result leaflet state, "A positive result will last for at least 48 hours."
Some of the women informed me that they called the manufacturers' 800#s and were told that sometimes, in very early pregnancy, there is not "enough hCG to make the line stick." Other women who also called the 800#s were told by other representatives that a disappearing line should be regarded as a negative test altogether. Others were told the test was positive, even if the line disappears. So, there seems to be quite a bit of confusion involved among the company representatives
I sure hope that you get that BFP but I would either wait a few days and test again or try another brand. Good luck!

Testing early shouldn't have anything to do with it. If it gave you a positive within the time limit, then it should be because it's picking up the pregnancy hormone (unless the test is faulty). I'd verify it with another brand though, since that is kind of strange. FRERs used to be very unreliable, but since the redesign I thought they were supposed to have improved a lot.

I believe they actually are as sensitive as FRERs, since the Clear Blue Digitals are sensitive down to 25mIUs now.

Definitely get another brand. I like the Equate brand from Wal-mart...they've always been easily discernable for me, both when they were - and when I already knew I was preggo and it was a really clear +

Equate and CBEDigital are the best tests (I used both) definately get a different name brand test. The Digital will last for 1 hour and than the words will disappear. My Equate tests stayed for days.

I actually had one more FRER left (pack of 2) and tried again with it this morning. I got a very very faint positive that is still there after 5 hours! My guess is that the positive result that I got yesterday got too light to see after the test dried out a bit.

Carolinagirl - Good luck! FWIW - when I was pregnant I tested with just about every HPT I could find (a very expensive habit) and the FRER was the only test that I didn't get a positive on until at least 15-16 DPO. I even got a digital "pregnant" (with CBE) before it showed up on FRER. I'm not sure why -- I had different packs from different places too!

Wrighty26, It is a very expensive habit, isn't it? I wish I'd read your post before I went to Wal-Mart. I thought the CBE didn't detect smaller amounts of HCG as well as FRER so I went ahead and got another pack of FRERs. I want to compare another test in the morning to see if it's getting darker anyway, so oh well. I'm sure I'll be getting more so I'll try those too.

Congrats, sounds like you are pregnant! The same thing happened to me. The line was faint and then went away so I incorrectly assumed I wasn't pregnant. I took a second test and the line was so faint I didn't even see it. I was telling my friends about it the same night and laughing that I thought I was pregnant (wasn't TTC) ... and they laughed at me and said it's extremely rare to get a BFP regardless if it goes away. So ... took another one the next day and sure enough - I was pregnant! I went back and looked at the one that I thought was a negative and there was the faintest of lines in the window. Then, after all that, I finally read the directions ... you should only read the window for 10 mins. After that, it's inaccurate so whatever you read first you go with ... so for you ... it's positive!

Yep, it's positive. It was darker today! I just hope it keeps getting darker.
