I watched it. It was hard to tell, but I wasn't too impressed with any of them yet.

I watched the first part- it's weird. It's almost like people think it's another American Idol. Looks are so important to cast a role, and it seems people aren't even considering that before they audition. I love Grease though, so I'll be watching.

It really annoyed me when the girls sang "Worse things I could do.." because they're auditioning for Sandy, not Rizzo. Totally different character type and voice, but none of the judges seemed to bat an eye. Oh well. To each his own, I guess.

We'll see how it shapes up.

I happened to be flipping channels and caught one lady. She was older with black hair. She was hard of hearing and couldn't see very well either. Boy she couldn't sing either! I turned after that.

I watched, although I have a hard time with these shows. This morning, I wrote this to a friend of mine: My biggest problem with these shows is the people that they feature who are so obviously out of place. I don't mind the folks who have pleasant voices and probably work at lot in community theater, but maybe don't know how to wow 'em at the big auditions. It's these folks who have NO experience, NO real training, and just figure they should go to one of the BIGGEST auditions in the country. "I'm a 38-year-old travel agent, and I want the part because John Travolta has been such an inspiration to me." ?????????????????????? I'm not saying they can't humor them and let them be on stage for a minute, but to FOCUS on them? I know we didn't see everyone who showed up, and I know they turned away more than we know, but please don't feature the really lame ones. It doesn't increase the drama--it's just embarrassing.

I HATE Billy Bush as a host. When he went out to beg for another chance for Vaughn, I was dying. (I know this was a producer choice, but still...) How humiliating when she still sucked on the second go!

I do like the judges though. Jim Jacobs co-wrote the original B'way show with Warren Casey and was Tony-nominated (at age 26) for Best Book of a Musical. David Ian produced the London revival of Grease. Kathleen Marshall is going to direct the B'way revival, and she has won 2 Tonys and 2 Drama Desk awards for choreography.

Here is the website for the show: http://www.nbc.com/Grease/index.shtml

So far, I like it. I'm a little shocked that they put that older dude through to Grease camp. He's just not right to play Danny, although he does have the right look. Just the wrong age. What's his name? Lucas or something?

I really liked that young girl who made it through; the seventeen year old with the really sweet looking face? She seemed perfect to me for the role of Sandi. It'll be fun to see how this show turns out.

Totally different character type and voice, but none of the judges seemed to bat an eye. Oh well. To each his own, I guess. I said the same exact thing when watching it. It seemed like a no-brainer to me but guess not everyone thinks like that.

I really didn't like the 2 young girls that made it through. I know that this was the age of the stars portrayed in the movie but it just seemed too young. They both looked immature and didn't look like they would bring much to a broadway musical.

Lucas or something?See, I was glad he was put through. Yes, he is a bit older but he just seemed more matured for the part. I would prefer watching someone around his age than the 17 yr olds.

The 17 yr olds just reminded me of watching a h.s. play. I wouldn't spend $$ to go to a broadway musical to watch 17 yr olds.

I watched and I'm still on the fence about this show. I love Grease (it's one of my favorite movies/soundtracks) so I'm gonna be picky over who gets the lead roles. Nobody IMO will hold a candle to Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta though, and it's hard to compare them to the contestants so far.

I think Jim Jacobs is the cutest thing ever. Love his laugh and facial expressions. He seems like a really nice guy and I'd love to hang out with him for a day.

I really liked the older Danny. Yeah he's older compared to the other people who auditioned, but to me he makes a better Danny than anyone they've shown so far. I can totally see him in the part, unlike some of the other guys.

I'm not sold on a Sandy yet though. Maybe NY will offer up some better auditions. We'll see.

But Grease is a play about high school! No, I know what you mean, but I don't think age is the key, I think it is seasoning. There are some 17-year-olds (whom we will see if we get an NYC audition) who have been professionals since they were, I don't know, Young Cosette and Gavroche in Les Mis at age 7, and they went to the Professional Children's School, and they can really SHINE.

I would love to see some younger leads in this revival. It really bothered me when they had people like Rosie O'Donnell and Brooke Shields playing 18-year-old Rizzo in the last revival. (I'm guessing that the eventual winners will be @ 25.)

Just now got around to watching it. Even though it's a total rip off of American Idol, I still liked it. I wish they has spent as much time showing the Chicago auditions as they had spent on the LA ones. Maybe they did that b/c so few got through in that city?

Looking forward to seeing which 12 they pick. There were a few whose names escape me at the moment that I'm excited to see again.

That guy with the deceased brother was a bit much, IMO.

I can't wait to see who get's partnered with whom. Oh, I think the guy (Austin) he's got some GORGEOUS eyes, and looks a little like a "Danny"

I predict that Austin is going to win the Danny role and Ashley is going to win the Sandy role. They just seem to have a lot more experience and polish in singing AND dancing. (although I think Austin might be shorter than Ashley, so I think it would be weird for Danny to be shorter than Sandy).

My favorite females (vocally) are Kate and Ashley, although Laura also has a nice quality. My favorite male is definitely Chad--good singing and his body language just says "Danny" to me (maybe reminds me a little of my own "Danny" once upon a time)--but I thought Austin did a good job at the showcase, too.

Chad's a cutie- I can "see" him as Danny and Ashley as Sandy the most.

When I see Max all I can see is Keanu as Ted. Most excellent!

IUAlum, Here (http://imdb.com/name/nm1932210/) is Austin Miller's IMDB page that tells you who he played on Days of Our Lives.

RE a spoiler (in white): I've read on some message boards that they will bring two people back onto the show (one boy and one girl). The guy Matt (the last one voted off) and the other Ashley.

Is it just me or is this final 12 show really sucking? I'm not impressed at all. I just told DH that the American Idol auditions have better singers. I didn't even think Austin did very well. Wassup with this show?? I was totally hooked but am not liking this episode.

ETA: Okay... Laura just sang. She was amazing. No one else so far is standing out for me.

ETA part 2: What's with the judges? They liked the "spiritual Sandy" chick over Laura?? I dunno... sounded way too gospel-y to me.

ETA again (yeah, I know, I need to wait until the show is over): Chad was great. It's hard to sing Stevie, but he did an awesome job.

I haven't watched the show before and I only caught a few performances tonight BUT...
*The two people they brought back from weeks past were AWFUL! Absolutely hideous!!
*Of the boys I only heard Jason and Max sing but I LOVED Max. He is amazing. He is totally believable in his performance! Jason was okay but way too forced and not right for the genre.
*I saw all the girls perform and thought they were all pretty weak. Kathleen had the best vocal with Kate and Laura following. None of them impressed me with their acting. I can tell that both Kathleen and Kate have BAs in Performance.

My biggest question: Is this really best they could find? And why didn't I know about these auditions?:p

diam124
01-29-2007, 07:06 AM
Yeah, the two they brought back were really bad. I felt bad for them because they knew it. The guy started off ok actually but was so bad towards the end. The girl looked to me like she just wanted to run off the stage. She just does not have a strong voice at all.

I only watched the first hour, but I agree that none of them were all that impressive. I thought Austin was a little too dramatic and cheesy.

ruby
01-29-2007, 07:29 AM
Didn't watch. So who won???????

Lauren23
01-29-2007, 09:48 AM
No one won yet. Everyone voted last night and then in 2 weeks they tell you who was voted off.

I agree that AI has better singers. I was not impressed for the most part last night, especially with the girls. For the guys, I thought Derek and Max were very good, but Chad was the best. I voted for him. For the girls I thought Laura, Kate and Juliana were good. But none of them really wowed me.

The two people they brought back did not do well at all...I felt bad for Matt because I do like them. Ashley was just awful. She got cut the first time for a reason.

Koala_Gurl
01-29-2007, 10:21 AM
Oh, gosh yes...the two who got cut never should have returned! I wonder why they did that? Did they need to push out the show one more week? (Making them the obvious cut for the next episode?) Though, since it is people voting, you never know...

Sazoo
01-29-2007, 01:54 PM
I agree with you guys about those two who got brought back - I felt bad for them because they were both pretty bad and they knew it. Not sure why they (or anyone) were asked to come back anyway...

Laura, Ashley, Chad and Derek were my favorites last night.

Also, Grease is not all singing and dancing, it's also a play. I'm wondering if/when any of the weekly competitions are going to be more acting-based rather than just dancing around the stage while singing.

Koala_Gurl
01-29-2007, 02:03 PM
W/R/T acting - the judges make comments about not seeing emotion, etc. in the singing, so I bet they are using that (and probably because plain ol' acting would make for boring TV?)

But, that said, I would like to see an "acting" part to this competition! I think those of us who are watching probably enjoy musical theater and would be OK with watching some acting. :)

Lauren23
01-29-2007, 02:50 PM
I agree! I'd love to see some acting. They should have to act out some classic Grease scenes or something.

I'm wondering if they are going to have them sing pop songs every week? (Or maybe since Andrew Lloyd Webber is coming on next week they'll have to sing his songs? I like his stuff (most of it) but it's quite different from the music in Grease.)

DisneyGirl
01-29-2007, 06:52 PM
Jumping in....

The two they brought back will be the FIRST two to go home! They were just so bad.. IMO

I really think its going to be a toss between: Chad, Derek, Ashley & kate.

I can hardly stand Austin..He bothers me for some strange reason.

Depending on who wins I just may buy tix to see the play since I love broadway. Though I have to be honest I am not expecting to be blown away with a great production.

I hope we don't have to wait to find out every two weeks  Talk about draggggggggging.

I wish the judges didn't all agree and just repeat each other for each contestant. Kathleen gave the most valuable feedback, I thought. Overall, they gave high praises to a lot of people I didn't think deserved it. Also, I haven't seen Olivia Newton John in awhile. She's had some work done. I looked her up on IMDB b/c DH and I had a bet on how old she is. She's 60!

I kinda like the set they have. It allows for people to use it to showcase several of their skills (or lack thereof).

Did it cross anyone else's mind when they saw Kathleen (the one in the red dress who sang the KT Tunstall song) that she may be pg?

Olivia's face was tighter than a drum. You could bounce quarters off that facelift.

I thought they were exceedingly positive too- all I can think is, they are SO vested in the Broadway show that they want to pump everyone up so that no matter who wins, the show will be a success.

I wondered if Kathleen was preggo too. That would not bode well for a Broadway run! But she did have to run around in Sandy pants earlier, so maybe not.

I got sucked in tonight...here are my thoughts.:p

As a general statement...the audio is poorly mixed. The crowd cheering is too loud!!

(01)Max: off key but great acting!
(02)Laura: AMAZING!! Little too all over the place with the staging but very connected to words.
(03) Derek: Great performance all around!
(04) Ashley: while the voice was nice, she missed the levels of the song but awesome belt!
(05) Kevin: Ha! He was a mess. Him trying to be “cool” made me laugh!
(06) Juliana: horribly boring song cut! Good voice but too legit for this show!
(07) Chad: Poor kid with the flu. He is a cutie though with a good voice.
(08) Kate: Hard song and while she’s got a great voice she was all over the place in pitch and key. I disagree with most of what the judges said.
(09) Austin: Great! Vocal and performance
(10) Kathleen: Good job. Something about her voice I don’t like but she did a great job. A little pitchy.
(11) Jason: Too feminine. His dancing had me cracking up.
(12) Allie: Her acting was very superficial. She didn't take it all in. Good voice but just not where near Laura tonight!

My choice: Dereck and Laura!:D

Lauren23

Laura was amazing last night. Loved her. Derek also sounded great. Chad was good also, considering he was sick. Ashley was good as well.

I did not like Austin. I thought he sounded out of breath way too much. Jason was not good either, I was totally bored. I hate, hate, HATED the way Kate sang "Buenos Aires". I don't know if it was the arrangement or what, but I hated it.

The right people went home last night, that was for sure.

Laura was my favorite Sandy last night. Favorite Danny was probably Austin. I could not like Derek’s performance - there was something about the unnecessary muscle flexing that annoyed me.

My over all favorites for Danny are Chad, then Max. For Sandy i think my favs are Ashley S and Laura.

And i thought ALW looked so uncomfortable every time the camera would cut to him. And he seemed really unimpressed when the ensemble did POTO.

My question is what was the point of America voting if the panel is going to end up choosing anyway? I thought WE got to choose. I agree that Ashley A. and David should have be the ones to go, but still it was Jason and Allie that received the lowest votes.

I love this show! It's so much fun to watch! :) I was happy with the eliminations because they were the ones who needed to go home. I thought that Matts response to the elimination was very mature saying that he had done really well for his first audition. I hope once he gets more training, he'll have better luck. I think that the two who were in the bottom 4 are in trouble this coming week, they didn't really wow me.

So far my favorite Sandy is Laura. For Danny, I'm liking either Derek or Max.

I'm happy to hear that so many people are loving Laura because she was in my SIL's high school class! I attended her high school graduation, haha. She's been in just about every musical / play in that area of MN and even as an "outsider" I've been hearing her name for years. I actually saw her last summer in Peter Pan - as Peter Pan - and she was great. On the show, I feel like she & Allie are the only two girls who aren't over-singing everything so I have enjoyed watching them perform MUCH more than the others.

Chad is totally Danny for me. I like how he sounds, looks and moves. I've been voting for Kate, because I really love her voice and I want her to stay on long enough to see a little more acting range. Most of the girls don't seem to have enough of an edge to play "finale Sandy".

How depressing were the goodbye songs? Talk about salt in the wound...

What I want to know is...were Juliana and Jason paired up to do a duet together last night (if they hadn't gotten booted off?) What if a duet pair hadn't been eliminated together like that? How would it have worked if, by eliminating those 2 particular contestants, the judges broke up 2 duet couples before that night's competition? I don't get it...

Another thing that bugged me about the elimination part at the beginning of the show was that the male host guy (what's his name?) asked one of the male judges why they chose to eliminate Jason and Juliana...after the female judge had already offered an explanation for their decisions of who to keep and who to let go.

I was really disappointed in Kate and Derek's performance last night. Kate is not one of my favorites so I don't really care if she wasn't as impressive this week, but I love Derek and cringed when he failed to hit those notes at the beginning of their song. Even without that though, their performance (dancing/acting-wise) was so boring compared to pretty much all of the other couples...I was really surprised by that. From This Moment was our first dance song at our wedding so I made DH come in and watch them perform it. Needless to say...he was not impressed.

I can't decide between Allie, Laura and Ashley which one I like best for Sandy. For the guys, Chad and Derek (despite last night's performance) are still my favorites for Danny.

I was thinking about that, too. My best guess is that they taught the same song to the 4 lowest people, and either way, they would have put it together. If they hadn't been matched before hand, the couple that was staying was probably taken to a rehearsal room to brush up the song a little before they performed later in the show. That's what we do if someone gets injured in a show and the swing has to go into that track without a rehearsal day.

Yep, I am! I wasn't sorry to see either of those 2 go last night, but now we're getting down to strong competitors, so it's going to get tougher!

I was glad to see them start evaluating acting performance of the candidates last night (well, the girls, anyway) rather than only considering singing and dancing capabilities.

Not sure which girl I want to see get eliminated next week...

kevin knew it was coming they had told him that if he was down there again they wouldn't save him.
kate i was surprised about...i thought that kathleen couldn't really get her head back into singing after ending up being saved but i can understand feeling like your up then down then you just have to try and be up.

looks like Laura is there favorite but would like to see more from Ashley and for the Danny i would have to say austin or maybe derek not sure yet. can't wait until next week! :)

I hope they decide to show the viewers some of that acting footage.

I felt bad for Kathleen being all out of breath and everything. The way they do that is so asinine to me. Yep, you're safe, now go change and be ready to do your performance in less than two minutes. Not fair, IMO.

Not fair, IMO.Agreed. I also don't like that just before they begin the sing-off, they announce which Danny & Sandy got the lowest # of votes. There's nothing like that last minute confidence blow 5 seconds before you have to sing to try to save your spot on the show.

i feel the same way like the sing off is just for us. and as far as I'm concerned they could just let them preform for there spot with what they worked on all week. like last week would have been the Sandy's. i mean they make them sing out the show after you told them they suck

I'm all about Max! He's so talented - I can't get over it!! Austin is just a big CHEESEcake! Heavy on the cheese. He gives me the heebie-jeebies! I really have no strong opinion about Sandy, but feel Laura's voice is much more pleasing overall.

After a kind of eh-season, I enjoyed tonight's show. Maybe it was the more human interest stories about the finalists that they had... I'm totally rooting for Max and Laura. Austin is good-lucking, but every time the camera focuses on him, he gives that cheesy, squinty-eyed grin. Too much.

Austin is so fake and forced. I can't buy him as a love interest, no way. Go Max! And I was a big Ashley fan through most of the season, but Laura's grown on me and now I want her to win.

Anyone think the little thing with Ashley's sister was weird? Holy competitive moley!

I told my husband if Max wins we have to go to New York this summer to see him; not that I think he's necessarily "hot" ...I just have been rooting for him since his day 1 on the show! I feel like he's my tv little brother! As for the girls.....Laura I guess...she has come a long way and I think she and Max would make a nice new look for Grease.

Max & Laura have been my top two all season! Ashley was my other top girl, so it was a hard decision for me but i think i'm going to have to go with Laura.

Max is so adorable!! I think he'll be great for Danny. I always thought of Danny as that lovable dork who tries to be hard but is really just a big softy.

I wish they would've used more of the people from the contest in other roles, like having the folks who didn't win as the understudies.

And I know I look relatively young for my age (34), but the cast would be more convincing playing my parents on broadway rather than a bunch of high schoolers ;)

I hate to jump into a thread I haven't participated in with such downer news, but I poked my nose in here because I read the NYTimes review of "Grease" this Sunday, and based on it I wouldn't be surprised if the production closed before the end of September.

As Seen on TV! Danny and Sandy 4-Ever and Ever (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2007/08/20/theater/reviews/20grea.html)

History tells me that when the NYTimes pans a show like this, it's gonna close.

It is actually a good article. I'm glad to see the reviewer didn't put the onus of the failure on the two stars. It sounds (as we suspected) dreadfully miscast and none of the "fun" is in this version - they were directing a straight musical instead of tailoring it to the strengths (and weaknesses) of the cast. Interesting that they included songs from the movie. I wonder if they include songs that weren't in the movie but in the original musical.
