View Full Version : White to yellowish BM
I should just start a BM thread. I see so many BM questions here, but couldn't find one that had to do with my issue.
We were away for the holiday and ever since we returned home dd has had yellowish, sometimes almost white BM's. This is much lighter than I've ever seen, even bfing. She threw up yesterday morning, so I was thinking it was the flu. I called the ped and the nurse wasn't concerned about the bm, but rather the throwing up. So, now that the vomiting has subsided her bm's are still that same yellowish almost white color. Anyone had this issue with their dc?

I've always been told white BM's were not good but I'm not sure why. I would take your DC in.

The reason for concern would be that white stools *can* be a sign of hepatitis. It would be prudent to consult your dr. just for peace of mind.
Thanks Marisa. I saw that online, but was hoping that some had a more positive experience. She has an apt tomorrow! This might sound crazy, but is it necessary to take in a sample or will they just more than likely run blood work on her?
DD had poops like this with a virus. they were rancid and she had them really frequently. doctor said it was a virus and to just keep her hydrated. be careful b/c both my husband and me got sick shortly thereafter!

I personally think that this is all far more likely related to a virus too -- my son had a very light poop several months back when he was sick, so I've seen this firsthand -- but even so it'd be wise to just rule anything else out, KWIM? Rather than going by the advice of folks on the internet, since it could potentially be more serious.
Not sure if you'll need a stool sample -- my son only had the one poop that looked like this so we rode out the illness for a day or two and he was fine.
Normally she goes 2 times max a day, now it is 5 and right after she eats (usually). You can smell them from across the room. Dh got ill yesterday, I've yet to catch anything other than a cold. I am praying this is just a virus. When you google this the first and only thing that shows up is Hepatitis, so I guess posting is helping me not to freak out too much before tomorrow.

DS had this too last week or the week before. They were loose and a very light yellow and they just smelled "sick". God it smelled so bad. Oh, and one of them was projectile...on me...at 6:30am  But it was just an icky virus and by the middle of the next day he was fine.

My DD had them for a couple of days a few weeks ago. Yuck! It was at the same time I was having a nasty stomach virus too. I just kept her really hydrated and rode it out.

DD (16 months) had the stomach virus that is going around. Once the diarrhea stopped, her BM's became creamy and whitish, occurred more frequently, stunk to high heaven, and were prone to coming out the sides of her diapers. After a few days they turned light yellow. Within about 6 days, she is back to her normal BMs. Our ped nurse was not concerned as it was clear she had a virus. The big thing was keeping her hydrated.

Sounds just like Rota virus. Very common in kids and once you smell it, you never will forget it. We put kids in isolation in the hospital for it because it will spread thru a peds unit in a day. My son had it about a onth ago... yellow to white stools that smelled like rotten buttermilk (if you can imagine that). I got it 12 hours after his symptoms started. Just be sure to wash your hands cuz everyone in the house will probably get it. Good luck.. not something I ever want to experience again. :)

I hope everything goes well at her appointment today!
Thanks ladies. This morning her stool was yellow with a little green. We went to the ped and he said as long as it has any yellow there are no worries. He thinks it has to do with a virus, but said it could also just be normal. He wasn't all that concerned about it. He did say for anyone who may find this post later that if the stool is white white, no sign of any yellow at all, for more than a day there is a concern, but any yellow is a sign that the liver is functioning well.
If this happens to you, as a pp mentioned you will never forget the smell! I am just thankful dd is drinking enough to keep her hydrated. Thanks again for all your responses.
