One of my husband's co-workers has an 8 month old and sent us a bag full of stuff to use. One of the things was her Avent manual breast pump. She told me I could boil all the parts and just buy new cups... does that sounds right!? Can you really reuse a breast pump safely?

i used a hand me down pump from a friend, it was the Medela PIS.. but like your friend mentioned, I just bought all new parts. I know some people (especially the pump manufactures), will say to never share pumps. But, that said.. I did, and had no issues. (and saved me $200).

Yes, you can safely reuse the Avent Isis, because all the parts can be boiled. You are not supposed to reuse electric pumps, although IMO the risk involved is pretty small.

I've heard the same thing the PP said! FYI - I really have liked the Isis for my occassional pumping!

Yup. I had a used Isis and no issues with it since all parts can be boiled and sterilized. Avent also has great customer service for extra/replacement parts.

Thanks for your help. So should I contact Avent to get the replacement cups? Or those can be boiled and re-used too?
Thanks!

Would you buy a used 2ce breastpump off of ebay if it was under $20?
It is a manual pump.......I can buy it brand new on sale at Sears right now for $50.
Just wanted some opinions!

I might consider it from a good friend or family member. But even then it is doubtful. I don't think I would use a used breastpump from a stranger.

...but you can sterilize it all.....
Thank you for your reply:D

I got a used breast pump from a friend and (haven't done it yet) am going to clean everything even though she told me she already did it.

Here's another thread on this subject (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2844&) that may help you. :)

I used my friends pump. But I bought ALL NEW parts for it. Granted it was a Medela, so it costs about $300 and I think I paid $60 bucks for the new parts.

Manual I would just buy new. I bought a Medela PIS off ebay this past October for $30, instead of $300. The seller never used it, bought it new and included parts she used in the hospital, but I tossed all that stuff. I had 2 kits already that I was going to be able to use with it, although I only used it for 2 weeks.

The Ameda Purely Yours is the only closed system on the market, which means that it is the only pump that can safely be used from person to person.

A close friend gave me her Medela PIS, and I just bought all new outer parts, and will use it. She said she never had a milk backup in it, only used one side of it, and she's the original owner. They say they aren't to be shared, but I think the slight risk will be outweighed by the benefits. That being said, I wouldn't get a used one from a stranger... too creepy for me!

I would check on the manufacturers website to see if all the parts are removable and able to be sterilized. Sometimes there are little nooks and crannies that can harbor old milk. The downside is that the other person's milk touches all parts of the pump (unlike electric pumps) but the upside is that you can probably sufficently sterilize the whole thing. Since it is a manual and can probably be fully sterilized I would so go for it. I would just sterlize it really really well.

From what I understand - you cannnot *sterlize* an electric pump. You can have electric pump professionally *sanitized* but it's not the same as something being sterilized.

Both posters questioning sterilizing the breastpumps were inquiring about the Avent Isis Manual Pump...
Thanks everyone for your comments! I found some great sterilizing info on the Isis online!

I have a Medela PIS from my aunt - I didn't even buy new parts, just sterilized them. I don't use it that often, so I didn't want to pay to replace all the parts.
