Oooh, not much sleep at all last night - DH and I each got maybe 3 hours, total, in different stretches. Each twin was up at separate times, for the most part, and Julia refused to sleep unless she was being held. argggh. She gets pretty loud too, when not receiving the service she is requesting, and woke up DS1 at around 1am. I can't believe they are one month today - yeah! The last two weeks were harder than the first two, though. I WISH they would go back to sleeping for 4 hours at a time at night.

I'm a bit behind, so here goes:

tummy time we try for once or twice a day, esp with Ben. He's more wobbly-headed than Mighty Mouse, so needs more help.

slings and things Both babies LOVE the Bjorn, and Mighty Mouse falls asleep almost immediately. Neither baby is at the 8lbs minimum yet, though, so we don't have them in the Bjorn for very long.

catering to their every whim we try to provide 5-star service,LOL, and we do try to pick them up immediately. I agree with the PPs in the other thread that they can't be spoiled. Having said that, we can't always get to the crying child immediately, esp if DS1 also needs something. Yesterday I let one seriously PO'd baby cry for a few minutes while I brushed my teeth and took my vitamins. I'm such a mean mother!!

LABOR VIBES to our ladies still waiting!! I hope both have "popped" already and are just not able to post yet...

It's so nice to see a lot of familiar names and lots of new ones too! I can't wait to get to know everyone.

The good times are good. The bad times are bad: HELP! So we had 5 weeks of constant screaming... switched to only formula and things improved dramatically from 5-7 weeks and now week 7-current have been filled with awful screaming again. It makes me sad that just over a week ago i posted in the nov mommies thread about how Miles had been sleeping 5.5 hours, then 6, then 8 hours in a row. Now, he goes down for 30 mins (if we're lucky) and wakes up screaming. What the freakin' heck is going on? We haven't changed anything in the last week or 2 to cause this so i don't get it. I can tell he's struggling with gas and often times if he wakes up screaming and we go into his room to soothe him we can smell the gas so i'm 90% sure that's what keeps waking him up and i assume that's why he's having screaming fits again. What i don't get is why it improved for a short time and then got bad again.

The screaming fits are starting to weigh on me again and the bad times are just bad. Then there is the glimmer of hope that it isn't all bad like when we stick him in his bath tub and he gives us his huge gummy grin and kicks around happily that it just lights up my world. I wish i knew what i could do for him. Any ideas? We've already tried 5 bottles, 4-5 different formulas (including soy), and eliminating breast milk (which did decrease the screaming fits. He was screaming for hours at a time. Like 6 hours at a time with little break!) I would call his doctor but after a day of ds screaming for 6 hours and calling dh home from work i made an appointment and the midwife was prompt to give me the 'babies are fussy, new mom overreacting speech". I am in the process of switching doctors because that and 1-2 other things with the office have just rubbed me the wrong way. Is it something i should even contact a new doctor about. Are 8 week olds still supposed to be struggling like this? I thought the intestinal immaturity issues were supposed to be cleared up by 6 weeks. When the tears start running down his cheeks i just want to die. It's heart wrenching.

If anyone has a new idea i'm willing to give it a try. Advice wanted!!

Sorry that was so long. I've had a bad afternoon/evening.

AmyE- I'd imagine you aren't getting much sleep! I barely get any and i only have ONE!

Teresita- That's a funny picture. It's funny what positions the camera catches babies in! We have the same bath tub... LOVE IT! Only Miles only lasted in the hammock for 1 bath and we've done away with it ever since. He LOVES being submerged all the way in the water.

Rancid- Tyler is adorable. I love all of his hair! How have things been going?

katnbug- Are those sock monkeys on Hilarys dress?! or is it a blanket? Either way, I LOVE it!

I should totally be sleeping but Miles' gas issues have been bothering me to no end. I did a little looking online and i think i might have figured it out. I think he needs a faster flowing nipple for his bottle. Sadly i couldn't find any information on how to know for sure but i did read that the tip of the nipple should be collapsing and i've noticed lately that it is but i didn't think anything of it. He's been struggling with taking the bottle too but we thought it was due to the gassiness but maybe it is what's leading to the gassiness. Has anyone else switched to faster flowing nipples yet? We're still using newborn nipples. How do you know for sure when to switch?

We're using the playtex disposable nursing system (after trying Avent, Dr Browns, Vent Aire, and i think another one but i don't recall right now). I know they have a slow flow, variable flow, and fast flow. I guess i'll go out tomorrow and buy the variable flow and fast flow and see if that helps. I would love for this to be the solution to the problem and go back to more peaceful times :)

Rancid- Tyler is adorable. I love all of his hair! How have things been going?:D

Thanks! I love his hair too! :D Things have been going ok...much like everyone else, we're pretty sleep-deprived over here. Even though DH took over one of the night feedings last night and I was able to get 5.5 hours of continuous sleep plus another 1.5 hours later in the morning, I'm still dead exhausted.

Nov-Dec babies are awfully cute indeed!!:)

Going back to work~ I stopped in my office today (DH was home with DS so I could make it to a hair appt and run some errands alone) and it was great visiting with my boss and my dad. Things have been slow and they're not too anxious to get me back, so I'm thinking as long as we're doing ok financially I'll go back to work on a part time basis to start out at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb at the earliest.

We're still figuring out the childcare thing, I know it's a bit late in the game. My mom can watch DS 2 days a week and DH can watch him on Weds (his day off) and the occasional Tues. I was thinking I could bring him to work with me the other 1-2 days/week as we have an empt office in our suite, but my boss didn't seem too keen on it but my dad (my 'other' boss) and my only full-time coworker would LOVE to have DS around (as would I), depending on how much attention he needs at 2 mos that would take me away from my work from time to time. And that would only work for a short time, maybe a couple months at most. Otherwise I'll need to find childcare that can watch a newborn and most places I've checked are currently not taking any new babies. The search continues!!

Hey ladies! So excited for this new thread! (Thanks ellidew!)

Things on my end are going well! Kate just amazes me every day. I love seeing her learn and grow and develop. I get smiles on a very regular basis now and boy, that makes all the fussiness at other times of the day worth it! ;)

The big thing we are struggling with right now is Kate's weight gain. She did well initially - at her 2 week visit she was back up to her birth weight. But at her 1 month appt, she had only gained about 3 ozs per week. I took her in yesterday to have her weight checked and she had only gained 3 ozs in those 2 weeks. Ugh. I'm exclusively BFing and the ped suggested supplementing with formula, which I'd rather not do. She averages about 3 hours between feedings during the day. She does sleep quite a long time at night - anywhere from 5-8 hours regularly. Should I wake her to feed her during the night? Ugh. Again, she eats until she no longer seems hungry - even if it means feeding both sides (typically she'll get one side per feeding and she'll stay on for about a half hour). She is still having normal amounts of wet and dirty diapers.

Lilla: My baby is 5 weeks old, and I have been struggling with weight gain too. I was exclusively BFing, but the doctor suggested that I supplement a little. I occasionally give him 1-2 more ounces if he still seems hungry after 40 minutes of BFing (my pedi said not to let him go longer than that, as it will tire him out). I also give one formula bottle before bed. My baby goes 3-4 hours between feeding during the day and 4-5 at night. I feel lucky, but also worried that he is not getting enough food! It took him almost 4 weeks to get to his birth weight. I have another weight check next week, and I am hoping for big gains - he really looks like he has put on weight!

Lilla
01-03-2007, 07:26 AM
rosa Gosh I'm so glad I'm not the only one struggling with this weight gain thing. When you BF your DS, do you nurse him on both sides? Or just one per feeding? I have been only nursing DD on one side per feeding and I'm wondering if that's the problem. My new theory is that maybe she basically drains the one side and just stays on there sucking a little bit after that for comfort reasons (while I'm thinking she's still eating). I'm going to start nursing her on both sides per feeding now and see what that does. I'll also try and offer her an extra ounce or two of expressed BM after a feeding here and there and see if she wants that. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your weight check next week shows some big gains!!

rosa727
01-03-2007, 07:32 AM
Lilla: It is funny - I have the same thoughts as you. I was only doing one side per feeding, but I was worried that he was draining that side and then just sucking for comfort. Now I try to move him off after about 25 minutes and offer him the other side (unless he already looks sleepy and satiated). I try to listen for swallowing to know if he is still really eating, but that can be hard to hear. My doctor did say I should offer both sides (after he was not gaining well). I don't know if you use a pacifier, but I also use that sometimes to determine if he is done eating. If I pull him off (when I suspect he is done) and give him the pacifier, he will only take it if he just wants to suck for comfort. If he is still hungry, he will spit it out and get mad.

I think trying some EBM after some feedings may be a good idea. I should try going to that, rather than the formula too. I just have trouble finding time to pump!

Lots of cute babies in here, Congrats ladies, enjoy them, they grow so fast. My Easton will be 4 months tomorrow.

Ellidew - I read your issue and we faced the same with Easton. He was so gassy for weeks. I finally moved him to Target brand gassy fussiness formula along with gas drops in each bottle, burping after the initial 1st oz and giving him a 2 oz bottle a day of water mixed with gripe water and it worked after about 2-3 weeks. He hardly ever has any issues now with gas. We are still on the formula and he just uses plain old Gerber bottles, just moved him now to the next size up of medium flow. We have a Playtex VentAire bottle, but he hates the silicone nipples so I use one of his regular latex Gerber ones and he uses the bottle.

He was constipated as well or a time, once he turned 3 months started giving him baby apple prune juice diluted with water, keeps him regular and he loves the taste, I tried just apple diluted and he didn't take to it at all. He gets a bottle of it just about 1 time a week and has helped with gas I think too. (we make little cubes of the remaining juice)

Isn't it too cute? It's a blanket I got from a boutique in our town. (I also got the burp cloths that match :)) They're online at www.sandmanquilts.com.
Sorry about Miles' fussiness.. we had some issues too, but switched to Nutramigen and DD seems to be better most days. I also BF her about 50% of the time, so I'm thinking my diet has a lot to do with her issues.

faster flowing nipples- We haven't changed yet because DD is still doing ok with the newborn ones. We use the Nuk style nipples.

weight gain- No problems here, DD has been gaining like crazy. I still worry about how much milk she's getting when she bf's though. I seem to feed her sooner after bf than after formula feeding her.

Ericka- How much gripe water did you mix in with the 2 oz bottle of water? Yesterday afternoon i started putting 1/2 tsp in each of his bottles. He seems much happier today but he exploded in his diaper this morning so that's probably why. He typically has a bowel movement every 48 hours (give or take) but that second day leading up to it is always awful. Where did you get the apple prune juice? Do you have to wait until 3 months to use it?

Ericka_Jarett
01-03-2007, 09:46 AM
I would give him 1tsp or 5ml in the bottle of water, sometimes a little less and it still worked for him. You can give Gripe water up to I think 6 times a day, I did about 1-2 bottles a day for the first few days and than just 1 time a day until we were 1 time every 3 days. Easton was getting to the every 2-3 days of constipation and finally with the gripe and than when I started him on the juice things got to 1 time a day, he is much happier.

The apple prune juice I get is made by Gerber so it's in the baby food section with the juices. You can usually get single serve or 4 packs. I got the juice in 4 packs at Target and single serve at Walmart, but our grocery store carries it too. Target's 4 pack is I believe $2.24 a pack, was just on sale for $1.89

I think the juice thing is one of those areas no one will agree on (some will disagree with my choices and that's ok), some will say don't introduce it at all, while others are giving it at 2 weeks old. Easton was almost 3 months when I even considered the juice thing, not really because I read that was the time, he was just at that point already. I never got any advice from the ped about what to do about his constipation or his gas, other than it occurs, use gas drops (they were not cutting it, he was getting them every bottle and nothing, for the occassion they are good), well to see Easton uncomfortable for hours a day was not cutting it for me, that is why I said he was going to try the juice and hubby agreed with my decision. It worked for us so we stick with it. Plus when he starts solids (possibly next week per the ped) we know what juice willhelp him go should he get constipated from his cereal

I would say stay with the gripe water for now and see how he does on it, if after 2 weeks you don't see a change or it helping, maybe try the juice route and see how that works for you. I usually mix his juice 1/2 oz to rest water. Or if I am using the cubes I usually get enough juice from 1 bottle to make about 14 heart shaped cubes (half filled hearts)

Weight gain~ No problems here, I don’t think. At his 2 week ped appt he had already surpassed his birth weight by 8oz. But I do worry just the same about how much he’s getting from BF. I’ve also been nursing him on one side per feeding mostly, and it can take anywhere from 15-45 minutes for him to feel “done”. Usually at the 20 min mark I’ll take him off to burp him and if he’s still hungry after that I’ll put him back on that side for another 10 min, do the burp again and if still hungry I’ll put him on side 2 which usually lasts only another 5-15 min but sometimes more if he’s in one of his growth spurts and constantly wanting to nurse.

Rosa~ I’ve been meaning to ask you if your pregnancy itchies went away?? Mine hadn’t by 1w PP so I went to an urgent care center and got a prescription for a cream that has worked like magic to make mine go away, it’s been like heaven for me and my skin since that night! I felt so bad during that first week, I would be nursing DS in the middle of the night and couldn’t wait for him to finish so I could have a scratching session, sometimes I’d even take him off so I could scratch for a minute and get some relief.:o

Katmg~ I did the same thing the other night!! I’d been over at my mom’s with DS visiting, and he fell asleep in the carseat on the way home after a day of fussing and very little sleep time. When we got home, I left him in the carseat and he slept for a total of 4.5 hours before he finally woke up to eat/be changed!! I got so much done that day as a result (organized kitchen, washed & put away laundry, washed & put away dishes/bottles, cleaned up the front room, went thru mail that had been piling up for a week, took a nap!). I read somewhere recently that you shouldn’t leave a baby for an extended period in a carseat, but I say to heck with them! Every other time he’s fallen asleep in the carseat and we take him out to put him in the bassinet, he wakes up and cries. So from now on I’m leaving him in there if he’s sleeping but always stop by to check on him every so often.;)

I’ve got a mild cold (sore throat, cough, headache, runny nose) and it’s tough enough taking care of 1 baby but with DH having yesterday and today off from work I feel like I have 2 to take care of, and the bigger one is FAR worse! He was complaining all mornng (9am+) about how DS won't nap so we (or rather, he) could get some sleep. He watched DS alone for all of 4 hours yesterday while I had a hair appt (first haircut in 5 mos) and ran errands and stopped by my work. When I got home, our place was a MESS. Dirty dishes piled up, the bedcovers all strewn about, dirty bottles lining the coffee table, it was a madhouse. Once I got all the groceries and Target-buys put away I started straightening up & cleaning, while listening to DH complain about how DS would not take a nap and give him a break, as he hadn’t even had a shower yet and it was 2pm. I asked him what he thought I did all day, when I didn’t have someone coming in to relieve me for awhile so I could “get things done”.

If anything, he says he now has a ton more respect for me being able to stay home with DS all day and manage to keep the house under control and looking good, and he understands how I can make it through the day without being able to find time to take a shower (those days I'll just wait till DH gets home from work around 9-10pm and take a quick one then). It's tough being home alone all day (with random visits every now and then from my mom/friends) but it's even tougher having to clean up after DH when he's home and off from work b/c he makes far larger messes than DS does, that's for sure!! And I don't mind cleaning up after DS one bit, but DH is old enough to clean up after himself!!

While DH napped on the couch this morning and after I fed and changed DS, I put DS down in the bassinet while he was in that post-feeding contentment stage, and had a quick breakfast. Than I wheeled the bassinet to the bathroom door where I proceeded to take a nice shower and DS fell right asleep within a minute of me starting up the water. I'm all blow-dried and make-up-ed and relaxing now (we have a dinner w/my family this afternoon so I wanted to "clean up" properly, LOL)...DS and DH are still sleeping, it's been about an hour now for DS and almost 2 for DH.  And I was the one up all night with the cough/sore throat/sneezing! And who do you think is complaining about being tired? Not me, although I must say I am sleepy. I might sneak off to the empty bedroom for a quick nap before either of them wake up.

I didn't mean to make this into a long-winded rant, sorry! I had to get it out and now I'm done. ;)

I can't believe DS was officially 1 month old as of yesterday (or 4.5 weeks if you're going by weeks)!! It seems like those weeks have flown by, and he's getting so big! I'm putting him in sleepers that were really big on him that first week and now they fit him perfectly! And when I put him down in the bassinet, he takes up so much more room in there length-wise that I'm wondering how long till he outgrows it!! I do love the changes in him though, his little personality is really starting to show through and he's showing more interest in things and it's becoming more fun to interact with him and have him interact back rather than just sitting there, LOL!

Yep! We love the swing! DD woke up at 1pm. She ate, I gave her a bath, and she is back asleep... in the swing! She just recently started looking at herself in the mirror too.

We have that swing too! Although DS doesn't seem to like it that much for very long, 5-10 minutes at a time at most. I did catch him looking at himself in the mirror a couple days ago though and managed to snag a picture of him doing so:

Rancid: Your DS is soooo cute! :) Layla has the same swing as well and she loves it! She admires herself in the mirror for a long while [such a girl, I tell you!] and will put herself to sleep. It is like magic!

Weight gain: She doesn't have a hard time gaining weight. She was beyond birth weight at her 2 week visit and almost 3 lbs. heavier at her 1 month WBV. She has her 2 month appointment next Friday. I am so not looking forward to it - with all of the shots and all that she'll be getting. :(

Euphorea~That is too cute about your DD and the mirror! I think my DS was moving around so much that his reflection caught his attention and he was likely trying to figure out what in the heck that thing staring back at him was. ;)

Wow, this place is hoppin'. I hope I can keep up.

ellidew- I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say I hope things get better soon! Hopefully the gripe water or using juice will help.

I have caught a cold :(. I am hoping that DS doesn't catch it. So far he has just had a stuffy nose. I am so happy that DH and I are at home together right now. I can't imagine taking care of DS alone while feeling like crap. I hope you feel better Rancid.

We have our 2 month visit with the Ped tomorrow. I am not looking forward to all the shots that DS has to get. I am very curious to know how much he weighs and how long he is now. He seems so big to me now and it amazes me how fast he has grown! The past two months have flown by.

QOTD- This is a personal question so I understand if some people don't want to answer. Have you DTD yet? I haven't gone there yet. I am still not even close to being in the mood and I am terrified it is going to hurt. Several friends have told me it is painful the first time.

I haven't been around much lately. Have had a lot going on, but I am due back at work in another week, so I will have a lot of CC time then.

Sydney's doing well except she has her days and nights mixed up which is a real bummer. During the day, she can sleep through a jackhammer but at night her sleep is so light that she would awaken if I shift in bed. We have been working to "reset" her clock and it hasn't been easy. We are in day 3. During the day we wake her up every 2 hours to play/eat. At night we try to leet her sleep as much as possible. During the day she can stay asleep until we wake her, but at night she would need to be soothed back to sleep within the hour. Last night she woke up almost every hour on the hour. My mind is so blurry right now and so are my eyes. I hope she resets soon.

Didn't have time to get to updates today. I'll do my best to get them done tomorrow... ANYONE WANT TO CO MODERATE?!? I'll actually have more time on my hands when i go back to work next Monday. So sad that i have to go back to work.

Anyone else gone back to work yet?: I'm seriously struggling with the idea that i'm going to miss our on all of Miles firsts like his first laugh, first time he rolls over, sits up, crawls, walks, etc... Even worse, i resent that my MIL might be telling me what my child likes rather than me telling her. Miles is going to be with her 2 days a week, school 2 days a week and i have 1 day a week off of work and then Sat and Sun. I also fear that any schedule we set is going to be totally screwed up at her house because she will 'know better'. I hope it's all fear for nothing but i cried last night thinking about it. I feel like i'm going to miss out on Miles' entire childhood.

Have you DTD yet? Yup, at 5 weeks.

Back to work - I started back to work last week, but I am able to bring Miranda with me. I'm worried about being able to do everything. She was great, but babies just take a lot of time and attention. And now I've come down with some strange illness (some type of inner ear infection, I think - going to the doctor tomorrow) and I've missed work all week. So the whole back to work thing is not off to a great start.

DTD - Honestly, I would really, really like to. I had a c-section, which healed quickly and easily, so I don't have any concerns about "down there." But we can't find the time! We co-sleep, and if I get out of bed, Miranda wakes up within 10 minutes. I'm actually considering asking a good friend if we can drop Miranda off at her house for an hour or so some evening. :o

Back to work~ Not yet, I stopped in at the office yesterday to chat with both my bosses (ie: my main boss and my dad) and neither of them saw any reason for me to rush back to work so soon as business has been slow since I left the day before Thanksgiving. We also discussed easing me back into working on a part time basis rather than just jumping into 9-hr workdays. I'll likely return to work by the end of Jan.

DTD~ Not yet, but I sure know DH would like to, it's not like he hasn't tried to yet! I'm just not that comfortable with the idea even though I also had a c/s so I know things "down there" will be ok. Since my 6-week pp appt isn't for another 2 weeks, I'm not on any form of bc so there's that issue as well and if we do have any condoms left in the stash, I'm sure they're well past their expiration date and I don't want to risk anything happening.:o

weight My guy is still small. He was 9 pounds, 1 ounces at his 2 month WBV on 12/12. He is getting EBM mixed with special preemie calorie booster. I am exclusively pumping (no fun!) He is gaining at each appointment and I know he will catch up eventually.

bottle nipples I hadn't even thought about changing sizes yet. I forgot there were additional sizes. DS is still taking the Avent newborn flow size and doesn't seem to have a problem with it. I might buy the size 1s and just try them. I have used gripe water too. I just give it to him via syringe if he seems like he is in pain or super fussy after a feeding. Dosing is on the bottle.

DTD: At little TMI but I thought my experience might help others waiting to DTD. Yep, we have a few times. The first few times I felt like my body wasn't very responsive, like the hormones were still out of whack. It was not painful for me, but I did have a c-section. Just this last time I really enjoyed things. ;) It has been really nice to reconnect with DH in this way. Finding time is a whole other issue. We really have to communicate our plans ahead of time and often it just doesn't happen and we are okay with that.

For those going for the 2 month shots, I gave DS Infants Tylenol before the appointment and for a few days after. He was fussy and cranky for a few days (longer than I expected) and the Tylenol seemed to help.

All of the babies are so adorable! I love how they all look so different, like mini people.

Good to know Roberta :) Glad wes is doing well. Are you using NeoSure at all? They sent me 2 ready mixed bottles just by signing up

Shots: About the Tylenol, my doctor said to wait until after the shots to see how Easton would react, plus they needed to get his weight for exact dosage, cause at 12lbs apparently the dose is more. But definately have the infant Tylenol before you go, so once you get the dosage you can use it.

Has anyone had a problem with reflux? My baby has recently started spitting up sometimes up to 10-15 times after a feeding. That just seems excessive. He often seems uncomfortable when he spits up too, crying right after it happens. I am thinking it could be reflux, so I was wondering whether anyone had experience with it and what the other symptoms are. I am going to the pediatrician tomorrow for a weigh-in, and I will talk it over with her, but I have heard that pediatricians are often reluctant to diagnose reflux, so I want to be equipped with some facts of my own.

Has anyone had a problem with reflux? My baby has recently started spitting up sometimes up to 10-15 times after a feeding.

That sounds like my DS recently, although it's more like 5-7 spit ups post-feeding. Sometimes it's straight BM, other times it looks like it may be partially digested. He doesn't seem uncomfortable during the spit ups and actually looks/acts happier afterwards until he starts crying for food again shortly after. I don't know if it's actual spit up b/c of eating a bit too much and there's just no more room in there for more, in which case eating more right afterwards as he would like would just bring more spit up, right? Or if it's something like reflux...

rosa727

Rancid: This was not always the case with my DS, but it has been bad the past few days. I am confused too because he will spit up and then seem to want to eat again right away. Although I have heard that when babies have reflux, they want to eat and eat because milk is a natural medicine for it.

So nice to finally catch up a little! DS is snoozing in my sling right now so I will try to post quickly since I never know how long the 'quiet time' will last.

Weight: Gavin is now 10lbs and about 6 weeks old! I'm really happy about that since like others, I'm always worried about how much BM he's getting. I usually feed him on one side to make sure he gets enough hind milk (we're still dealing with the green poop but I've given up on the elimination diet because it didn't seem to help!) but now and then I'll offer both sides just to make sure he's eating enough. He usually eats for about 15-20 minutes on each side and gets at least one bottle of EBM a day of about 3 oz or a little more. I know most 6 week old babies get 2 oz. but after my DH constantly telling me that our darling DS was still hungry, I increased it. Maybe that's why he's already 10 pounds! ;)

DTD: Nope, not yet but I"m looking forward to it. I just had my 6 week post partum visit and everything looks okay down there but I want to wait to get my IUD before going that route. We couuld do the condom thing but I know how much DH hates them so I don't think he minds waiting. I'm sure it'll take a little while to get back in the grove but like a PP said, it'll be nice to reconnect with DH that way. Like Rancid though, I don't want any 'accidents' so I'll wait until it's 'safe'.

Question about the 2 month shot visit: Gavin has his appt. in two weeks and I'd like to find out what I can expect. How many shots do they get and does anyone remember what they are? I think we have infant Tylenol but if not, I'll make sure to get some. Do most babies get a slight fever (I think I remember reading that somewhere) after getting the shots? Should I expect him to nurse more afterwards for a few days? DS is already somewhat fussy so I am dreading to see the fussiness increase.

Schedule Question: For those of you lucky lucky ones whose baby is sleeping a good long stretch at night, can you share your usual schedule during the day? DS has some great, long naps during the day either when we are driving somewhere (he'll fall asleep immediately in his car seat and I definitely do not take him out of it when we get back home) or taking a walk or if he's in my sling. However, at night it's a different story. He usually does not go down easily and then gets up about every 3 hours to eat. For the last few nights, he's gone back down pretty easily except for the 6am feeding. I'm sure he could be up for the day but given my lack of sleep, I just put him in bed with us so we can have another 2 hours. So my question is, how can I get him to sleep a little longer stretches at night? Does anyone limit how long naps are? If so, when should I wake him?

Bedtime routine[/b[\]: Anyone try doing this yet? I am thinking about trying to do one starting now just so DS can see some sort of consitency even if it doesn't result in longer stretches at night. Does anyone bathe their DC yet every day? We definitely don't. I bathe him about once a week since finding the time is tough but with the bedtime routine, I'd do it every night but again I'm not sure if it's too early for daily baths for him. Adivice?

[b]Rosa: 10-15 times of spitting up does seem like a lot in between feedings. DS definitely spits up a few times during feedings now and again but it's usually when he's lying down on the changing table (I've heard it's the change in gravity), if he's over my shoulder and I'm patting him or if I'm rocking him or swaying him too soon after a feeding. DS has cried after spitting up too but I"m not sure if it's because of reflux or just because it upset him. Does your DS spit up after EVERY feeding? Does he cry during a feeding? What I try to do now is have DS sit up in my lap after a feeding for a good 5 minutes before I change him and burp him. Honestly, I don't burp him after every feeding unless he looks like he needs it because that also lends itself to him spitting up as well. Definitely talk to your doctor and if necessary, insist on a prescription because usually your gut instinct is right.

-----------------------------------------------

Things here are good, for the most part. Gavin is stil pretty fussy but I am either getting used to it or going out for more outings to get him to sleep. He's an angel when he's asleep but when he's mad, he is mad, if you know what I mean. He hasn't smiled at us yet but is definitely cooing a lot more which is so much fun. I can't believe how much he changes every day. I love that. I am really hoping that the fussiness goes away at the 12 week mark. Like I mentioned above, his poop is still green with every bowel movement and I'm at a total loss on what it could be. I've taken so many things out of my diet and I was getting really weak and irritable as a result. He's still wetting enough diapers and having good poops so I'm trying not to stress out about it too much.

oh! diaper question: What kind of diapers is everyone using these days? We were using Pampers Swaddlers but I think DS had an allergic reaction to them. Now we're using Huggies Natural Fit and they're okay but I'm not thrilled with them. For some weird reason, DS's poop seems to land right on the right edge of his diaper (so weird) so sometimes it leaks if I wasn't able to change him from a previous poop, which is not fun because it's gotten on his clothing. Ick.

We had our 2 month visit today. The good part is that Ian now weighs 11 pounds and is 22 1/2 inches. He has gained almost 3 pounds in the past month and grew 2 inches. I can't believe how fast he is growing. The bad part was all the shots - 4 in all. Lilo, I can't remember what all of them were but, I know there was diptheria, polio, Hib (can't remember what that is), and one other one. We also opted to get the RSV vaccine, but that is oral. I nursed Ian right after the shots and that calmed him down quickly. Our Ped told us to watch for a fever and if he gets one to call them first before giving Tylenol. She said they want us to call because they want to run down a list of things to make sure there isn't an allergic reaction going on.

Reflux- Ian has reflux and we discussed how to handle it at his appt. today. Our Ped office is very proactive about reflux and have told us to watch for symptoms since Ian was a month old. His symptoms are - spitting up a lot after feedings (this doesn't happen every time), projectile spitting up on occasion, he coughs a lot, and many times we can hear him vomit a little bit and then swallow it back down. I can also tell on his really bad reflux days that he is in pain. I didn't want to put him on meds unless it was really necessary and our Ped agreed. However, we are getting ready to do more bottle feeding since I am going back to work and this can cause reflux to get worse. So, our Ped wrote us a prescription for Zantac and told us to start using if his reflux got worse when we started more bottles. She also said that if we start using it and things don't improve after 2 weeks we should call them and they will switch the medication.

schedule- We don't really have a schedule. DS just kind of made his own schedule. He usually goes down for the night between 9:30 and 10:30pm and sleeps for 6 hours. Then, he gets up for a feeding and goes back down for another 3 hours. His is usually up for the day by 8 or 8:30am. Some days he naps better than others. He will usually eat every 3 hours during the day and sometimes will take a couple good 2 or 3 hour naps.

bedtime routine- We haven't started this yet. I figure we will start this in another month or so. I only give DS a bath about 2 times a week. Lilo, if you want to start doing daily baths for routine you could just put DS in the warm water and not use soap if you are concerned about drying his skin out or irritating it.

diapers- We use Pampers Swaddlers right now. DS has had a few explosive poops, but I don't think any diaper could hold them in. For the most part the Pampers are working for us and we just bought 2 huge boxes so we will stick with them a while longer.

Missing milestones while at work- I am sad that I won't be the one to see the firsts too. My DH is staying home with DS though, so at least he will be the one to witness them. Plus, I can always hope that DS will save some of his first for the weekends or evenings when I am home.

Gotta run...DS has been screaming non-stop. I think the shots are responsible.

bedtime routine- I read that it's a good idea to try to establish a bedtime routine at 2 months. So right at 8 weeks we started one. At 7:30 we give him his bath, then if he's not too crabby i give him a lavender baby oil massage, then we diaper and dress him for bed and give him a bottle. He's usually down by 8:30. His sleeping patterns aren't exact but he will stay down from 8:30 until anywhere between 11:30-3:30. He gets up and has a bottle and goes right back down until about 6. He has another bottle at 6 and then half sleeps until 7:30-8. It's been working for us and it's a good way to end the day.

As far as a daily bath, we don't soap ds everyday. He loves the bath though and no matter how crabby he is if we put him in there he gets a huge smile on his face. It's worth it to me to put him in the bath tub just for that! lol. Plus, our bedtime routing has been working for a week now and since ds' arrival i've learned: If it ain't broke don't fix it!

day time schedule: Anything goes during the day! We don't have a schedule. Yesterday he was up most of the day and only half fell asleep for naps and woke as soon as i set him down. Today he's been napping off and on all day. We take each day in stride. What Miles wants, Miles gets (at least for now ;))

diapers- He was in huggies supreme at the hospital but when we got home we had a pack of pampers swaddlers from our baby shower. We tried those and he exploded out of them several times. We didn't even finish the pack before we went back to Huggies supreme. As far as wipes goes, after the initial no wipe stage we used huggies gentle wipes and he got a diaper rash. Switched to pampers sensitive and LOVE them and haven't had a problem since.

Question about the 2 month shot visit: I honestly don't remember what they were and when they wrote them down they abbreviated everything so a lot of good that does me! He had 4 shots, 2 in each thigh, and 1 oral vaccination. The nurse did it so fast that Miles barely noticed. He was already fussing anyway so he was all tensed up and probably DIDN'T notice. lol. After the nurse handed him back to me he calmed right away. We did a day and a half of tylenol afterwards. Since i have a fussy/screaming baby to start with it's hard to tell what the actual effect the shots had on him. We're just used to constantly attending to him and/or calming him.

reflux: I don't think so... however, in my quest for new nipples i got all the bottles out we've tried since he was born just to give them each another shot. Yesterday i used the evenflo bottles and he spit up everywhere for a long time after. Could it be the nipple you are using is causing more air to get in now that your baby is older and thus spitting up more? I don't know... just throwing it out there since i'm having to find a new nipple solution.

diapers- We also use Pampers Swaddlers and are happy with them. I also used them with DS & continue to use Pampers products with him.. Baby Dry and now Cruisers. I have tried Huggies and even Luv's on occasion as DS has grown up. He always leaked in the Huggies for some reason. My sister calls me a "diaper snob" - she uses Huggies and likes them just fine. :)

I think the diaper responses are funny. It just proves that each child is different so if you're having problems with one brand just try another. After the pampers we stopped trying since the huggies work. Haven't had a leaky/explosive diaper since.

Oops, I meant to post this a couple hours ago. Guess I forgot to hit the Submit button before rushing away to tend to baby! :p

Ellidew~ That video is too cute!! What a fast learner!!;)

Diapers~ In the hospital they used the Swaddlers and that's what we continued using when we returned home. At the end of week 1 we began having problems of urine leak-throughs and we tested several different brands of diapers till we found one that kept things contained the best. We haven't used anything but than Luvs Newborn ever since, and will be trying Luvs in size 1 before trying any other brands when we need to move up a size. DS has some really explosive poops (and some massive ones too) but the Luvs have NEVER leaked poop. We still have the occasional urine leak-throughs, maybe like one diaper out of ~60 in a given week? FWIW, we found the Luvs at Target, they didn't have any at BRU or any other drug- or grocery-stores we visited. I also bought some off 1800diapers.com during the first 2 weeks when I was housebound and didn't know where to find the Luvs and didn't want to send DH all over the place to find them (the first package we used was a shower gift).

DTD~ Ok things might be changing over here since my last DTD post from yesterday. I just checked out our special stash of condoms and we actually have some in there, some of which expire in 9/07 and the rest in late '09. So it looks like DH might find himself a lucky man once I'm over my cold and feeling a little better. :o

Like Lilo, I'm curious to hear about schedules and bedtime routines. This week I've started keeping a schedule of DS's awake and sleeping times, and hoping that I can determine if some sort of pattern is happening so we can mesh DS's schedule with our own.

Missing milestones while at work~ I am a little bummed about that but consider myself lucky that for the first few months after I return to work, DS will be with me at work two days a week. Two days a week he will be at my mom's, which is 3 miles from my work and the other day he'll be at home with DH as he has Weds (and sometimes Tues) off every week. He won't be coming with me to work forever unfortunately so we're either looking into daycare for the remaining 1-2 days/week or my mom will watch him those days once my brother's DD is potty trained enough to go to "big girls school", thus freeing up my mom's grandkid watching capabilities.

As far as wipes goes, after the initial no wipe stage we used huggies gentle wipes and he got a diaper rash. Switched to pampers sensitive and LOVE them and haven't had a problem since.

How funny! During the no-wipes stage (suggsted by the hospital) DS developed a diaper rash and the hospital had recommended no barrier ointments in the first 2 weeks. His little bum was SO red and irritated, we got the OK from the ped to use some Desitin and it was healed up within a day or two. It made diaper changes that much easier for us (no screaming baby) and that much less painful for him. The ped said he had never heard of the no-wipes thing and said we were ok to use regular wipes on DS all we wanted. We've been using the Pampers sensitive as well, and LOVE them. I went to Target the other day and stocked up on several 3-pack refills.

Wow - lots of Q's to catch up on...

diapers We've mostly used Pampers Swaddlers since day 1. We've also tried some Luvs and Huggies that we got as shower gifts and neither of those work as well as the Pampers. And I do have to say I also LOVE the Pampers Sensitive wipes. Right now I'm trying to finish up some cheapy wipes we got as a shower gift, but I've got a bunch of the Pampers Sensitive ready to go. Question though....what is this "no wipes" thing that you guys are talking about? I've never heard of that.

dtd Not yet. Although DH did re-stock his condom stash while we were at Target last weekend. I think he's ok with being a bit patient with me. Mentally I'm just not ready yet. Probably soon though.

bedtime routine I've been doing the same bedtime routine since we brought her home from the hospital. Our routine is just change the diaper, put jammies on, nurse her and then she goes down without a hitch. Twice a week we do bath time, so on those nights throw a bath in before the nursing session and again, she goes down without a problem.

schedule I do our bedtime routine anywhere from 9-11pm depending on when her schedule is that day. For about the last week, she's been sleeping 7-8 hours at night. So that means she wakes up about 6 or 7am. I feed her when she wakes up and then she is usually up for the day. She doesn't nap a whole lot in the daytime. When she does, it's when I'm holding her - she wakes up as soon as I go to put her down. Then in the evening, she'll nap from 8-9pm until we start her bedtime routine. She definately sleeps more at night vs. during the day. This is good and bad - good for obvious reasons, but bad because I have a hard time getting anything done during the day!

So as I mentioned earlier, I've started feeding Kate on both sides during each feeding. I think this will help her weight gain. Her poops have been a bit more frequent since I started this and they are also back to the yellowish color. They had been greenish for a week or so. I'm taking that as a positive sign. I'll probably run her to the ped's office on Tuesday just to do another weight check....really because I'm just anal. ;)

Question though....what is this "no wipes" thing that you guys are talking about? I've never heard of that.

The nurses at my hospital and the LC who taught our baby care basics class said that instead of using wipes during the first 2 weeks, to use those really soft cloth-like paper towels (viva?) and warm water. The belief is that some wipes contain(ed) some harsh chemical that can irritate baby's skin. Apparently that's a bunch of hooey b/c even our ped had never heard that one. It was a happy day when we broke out the wipes.

Question though....what is this "no wipes" thing that you guys are talking about? I've never heard of that.

Same as rancid though we used damp baby washcloths. We stocked up on lots of cheap ones. We use them for random things now like when he was congested and we had to use the aspirator and wipe his nose we used that instead of kleenex, when we run out of burp cloths, etc... They've really come in handy. We have nicer washcloths for bath time though i find myself only using the washcloth on his head in hopes of loosening up some of the dry skin (cradle cap).

Diaper ointment: We definitely used this when ds got a diaper rash after using the huggies sensitive wipes. It cleared it up in 1 day and we never used those wipes again! We haven't had a need for any diaper ointment since.

Thanks rancid! I totally love that digital cameras have that video feature now! No need for an actual video camera! I didn't even realize i could use it until a couple of weeks ago. Now i get all the cute stuff on video! I'm working on his 1st year dvd now... thought i better keep it updated as the year goes by rather then try to do it all at the end. I love that i have video to add to it!!

diapers~ we use both Pampers Swaddlers and Huggies Supremes. I have no real preference. When DD#1 was born, I tried every store and major name brand available in our area and went back to these two brands. I think right now, Huggies fit best, but we have only had one major blowout in 6 weeks of being home.

dtd~ yup, last weekend. I guess that was at 6 weeks. All I can say is get some Astro Glide or KY Jelly. I had a c-section, but it was still uncomfortable. Of course, if you want to know TMI, we have this problem any time we take a long break because DH is rather well endowed and I never dilated.

bedtime routine~ we don't have one yet for DD#2, but with DD#1 we do a bath, story and prayers and that is it. We started that consistently at 5 months with her and it worked wonders!!! We will put DD#2 on the same routine in a month or two (whenever we put her in the nursery to sleep with DD#1), adding a bottle while doing the story time. HTH. :)

diaper ointment~ we have used vaseline a couple times as it is most basic and super helpful. I also use a medicated powder (which some disagree with), but it is amazing and really helps! I am certain to not get too much in the air as it can cause respiratory problems for the baby.

wipes~ we use pampers unscented or the target brand equivalent and have never had a problem.

Hi all! I'll never catch up, but here's a start:

diapers I'm convinced it totally depends on the baby's shape. With DS1, Pampers didn't fit until he was about a size 4. Target nb fit best at first, then huggies, then the Kirkland brand a Costco, then back to Huggies for the next year or so. The twins do best in Pampers swaddlers though, and leak through the Target ones. Go figure.

ointment we tried Desitin and AD with DS1, but didn't think it helped. When DS got diaper rash at about 1 month, our Ped told us to go buy Triple Paste (non prescription, but behind the counter at most pharmacies, inc Target). It was MAGIC - cleared up anythign within 24 hours. We only use that on DS 1 if he gets a bit pink now, and haven't had problems since. expensive, but you only use a teeny amount, so I think it's actually a better value than most ointments. For the twins, we are doing vaseline at most diaper changes, and have used Triple Paste on G.I. Julia once when she got a bit red - cleared up ASAP. (That's DH's new nickname for our girl - he thinks she looks like the bald Demi Moore)

wipes we go the 'no wipes' advice somewhere and that lasted ...oh, three days or so with DS1. we've used wipes on the twins since we brought them home with no problems.

bedtime with DS1 (now 20 months) it's bath, brush teeth, bottle, book bed. He's going through a stage where he wants a parent to sit until he falls asleep - usus 30 mins - when before he'd just roll over and conk out on his own, or read him self to sleep with a book on airplanes. I think it's just a stage, anyway. The twins are still up every 2-4 hours, so we have no real routine, we put them down whenever they look sleepy.

In better news - we have a new nighttime routine for the parents - LOL - which seems to be working these last two nights. DH takes Shift 1, until about midnight, then I take over until 5am, then I go back to bed until 7pm. It's hard when both babies are up at the same time, but DH and I like it better because we can sleep more than 2 hours at a time. I CAN"T WAIT until at least one of these kids is going 5 hours at time. SOOOOo jealous of those Nov moms!

In BEST news - we go home next week! (to catch up: I live in SEAsia, moved to Bangkok to work from our office here at 31 wks pg to be close to real medical care. It's about a 45 min flight to our real home.) Anyways, we get cleared by our ped on Monday and go home next Sunday. yeah!! I'm so excited to be back where I have two real cribs, the mobiles, the bouncy seats, a pnp, a swing....I know. It sounds like I am just looking for a place to park a baby. Only sometimes, really, all I need is a place to park a babyb for a few minutes, and they are getting too rolly for the couch to work safetly!

Oh, and I go back to work Feb 1. Part time for the first week, then FT again. really mixed feelings right now, I admit.

Let's see if I can get caught up while DS sleeps in his sling...

diapers: We use Pampers Swaddlers and always have. They have only leaked a couple times, and it was very little. I think the problem was that I didn't make sure the "ruffles" around the legs were out.

ointment: We have a prescription one that has a little steroid in it too. It works wonderfully. We got it because he had persistent diaper rash - not bad, but it stuck around. It has cleared up, so we just use Desitin occasionally to prevent it from coming back.

wipes: I had heard about the "no wipes" thing before he was born, but then I heard it was nonsense, so I have used the Sensitive wipes since he was born. We have used other types in the diaper bag, and I don't notice a big difference. Although they were all Huggies or Pampers.

OK -baby is crying - be back!

Wow, am I the only one who uses diaper ointment for every change? We were using Destin and Balmex and DS was getting a diaper rash and none of them helped. We finally switched to A&D ointment and it worked like a charm and cleared up within 2 days. I still put the ointment on at every change just so he has a barrier but maybe it's not necessary? We are actually using water right now instead of wipes because I was afraid that the Pampers wipes were causing the diaper rash but I'm going to experiment soon and go back to the sensitive wipes to see what happens.

I definitely need to experiment more with diaper brands. DS has now had a few explosive poops at night and the Huggies Natural Fit aren't containing them enough. I'm going to try Luvs and Huggies Supreme to see if it helps.

Question for those of you with a son: Do you make a conscious effort to make sure your DS's penis is facing down when you change him? My DH keeps telling me that I"m not 'tucking' DS's penis down enough when I change him since he's leaked through. just curious.

thanks to everyone for posting their schedules! last night DS slept from 9pm to 4:30am! that was definitely a first and hopefully will happen again tonight!

Question for those of you with a son: Eh, yes and no. Most of the time i do. Most of the time it's pointing down to begin with. I make sure to pull back the skin on his penis every couple of changes too to remove any string or fuzz.
Another question for those with sons... Do you wipe at every diaper change? I don't and wonder if i should be!

01-05-2007, 08:50 AM
Diapers - we didn't have luck with Huggies with our first son, so we've been a Pampers family for a few years now (sure wish he was potty trained!).
Wipes - we don't wipe him at every change if it is just pee. He gets wiped down about every other pee diaper and of course lots of wipes (Pampers Sensitive for now) are used if there's poop!
Ointment - we haven't used any ointment yet - so far no diaper rash thank goodness!
Penis direction :) - funny, we did with our first son, but not now. In fact, I've only been sprayed twice this time around! I guess I learned! We haven't had a problem with diapers leaking yet. I found with our first that leaking happened when it was time to move up a size, barring any mechanical problems with how the diaper was put on itself.
Dtd - I had my 6 week check-up on Wednesday and have to get my prescription for Nuvaring filled before I go down that road. ;)

[QUOTE=ellidew;1136442]Question for those of you with a son: I feel like a total dummy! I didn't even think to check to see what direction he was pointing! Maybe that's why we have leakage.

diapers We use Pampers Swaddlers b/c they seem to be the thinnest cut and DS has skinny legs and no tush.

ointment I use the Arbonne diaper cream and use it sparingly. He doesn'y get much of a rash and when he starts turning red I dab a little and it clears right up.

DTD not yet. I'm only 3 weeks PP but I'm anxiously awaiting the all clear.

bedtime I really want to start some kind of routine but DH works late some nights and leaves for work before DS wakes up some mornings so we stay up late so he can have some family time. We'll prob start a routine at 2 months.

diapers We like the Pampers Swaddlers, although I have found the Target brand diapers work just as well. Huggies seemed to leak with just a little bit of pee- weird. I did find that when we started having leaks with any type of diaper, it was time to go up a size. preemie-newborn-size 1

boys and diaper changes- I just try to make sure it is not pointed straight up, but I don't "tuck" it either. That sounds uncomfortable. I wipe most diaper changes- probaly not necessary for pee only diapers, but do it anyway. We have use Sensitive wipes since day one and found the Target brand to be comparable to the Huggies. Buying Target brand diapers and wipes is saving us some nice money.

diaper cream DS had two little red raw spots right by his anus. We used Aveeno diaper cream and it cleared up in a week. I have used diaper cream and he hasn't had any other problems or rashes.

I going back to the OB/GYN today. My postpartum bleeding has never officially stopped and I am 13 weeks PP. Enough already! It will stop for a day or a couple hours but always comes back. there is no way it is a period because my body has not had time to build up a uterine lining to shed. I called the advise nurse and she recommended I come in.

diapers/wipes: We are cloth diapering, so we haven't had any leaks or diaper rashes despite the fact that DS has super sensitive skin.

Penis direction: DS is always pointing up and I'm sure it doesn't, but I always think it would hurt if I forced it down so I don't do it. We don't have a problem with leaks, but it could be a problem in the future.

Dtd: no way! I had an episiotomy and its just starting to feel better when I wipe. I'm mentally ready to dtd, but I think it will hurt too bad still.

wiping at every change: I quickly wipe with every change beause I don't want to risk any diaper rashes

bedtime: We've had the same routine since DS was 2 weeks old. He sleeps in our room so at 9:30 we all go up to bed. I put him in his swaddle blanket and then nurse him. If he falls asleep I'll put him down, but if not I'll lay him on a pillow on my lap while I read until he falls asleep - usually it only takes a few minutes. He wakes up a few times during the night, but he eats and then goes right back to sleep. DS is a champion sleeper and doesn't get up for the day until 11 the next morning, so I'm not losing any sleep.

shots: is anyone else having the shots done on a delayed/selective schedule? DS won't be getting all of the "recommended" shots and most of the other ones we are doing on a different schedule that what the gov't suggests.

weight: DS was only 6lbs 6ozs at birth, but he's already up to 10lbs 12 ozs at 6 weeks. I'm amazed at how fast he's growing!

I was blessed with a baby that doesn't cry and likes to sleep. There was one time that he cried for about 2.5 minutes and that was only because I couldn't get to him because we were driving, but other than that he never cries or fusses. I never dreamed it would be like this! I'm ready for #2 :p j/k

Oh, that just makes me sick to my stomach! My ds has been screaming since the day he was born and probably spends 60-75% of his awake time fussing. I sure hope my #2 is like your #1! Thanks rancid! I totally love that digital cameras have that video feature now! No need for an actual video camera! I didn't even realize i could use it until a couple of weeks ago. Now i get all the cute stuff on video!

I love it!! And with our newish computer all I have to do is put the memory card into the computer and it downloads everything very fast. And since I discovered that you can upload videos onto Photobucket, you can bet I’ve been doing that the last few days so I can email everyone videos now along with photos, LOL!!

In BEST news - we go home next week!

Yay! I’m so excited for you!! How nice it will be to be back at home with all the things you need to keep the babies busy! I totally understand about having to put the baby/babies down for a few minutes, we have to eat and go to the bathroom too, and it’s not easy to do one or the other while holding a wee one (or two!!). ;)

wipes: <snip> We have used other types in the diaper bag, and I don't notice a big difference. Although they were all Huggies or Pampers.

Quick note...I was at Target a few weeks ago looking for wipes in a travel-sized container for the diaper bag since I couldn't find any at BRU and was tired of toting wipes around in a zip lock baggy. In the travel toiletries section I found several different types of travel-sized wipes, one of which was a Pampers Sensitive pack. It's a hard case and comes w/12 wipes, and is only about 1" thick so it's perfect for the diaper bag! And refillable since it's a hard case (like a tiny version of the full size). Just thought I'd mention it. :) I love the Pampers sensitive wipes.

Wow, am I the only one who uses diaper ointment for every change?

We do too! Ever since the diaper rash healed (it was pretty bad-his cheeks were solid red and he had a bright red sore on one side), we've dabbed a tiny bit of Desitin on the in-between-cheeks area as a barrier. Not much though, just a tiny bit now(but a tiny bit of Desitin goes a looong way).

Question 1 for those of you with a son: Do you make a conscious effort to make sure your DS's penis is facing down when you change him? Nope. When we were having the multitude of diaper leak-throughs a few weeks ago, that was one of the suggestions I got from one of the many people I sought advice from. We tried it and it didn't change that situation at all. Now I don't even bother checking out the direction it's facing when I'm putting a clean diaper on. I am aware of it as I'm taking the soiled diaper off though, and make a conscious effort to place either a thick cloth diaper or one of the many unused receiving blankets (as DS hates being swaddled) over his lap area to prevent any sprays. But unfortunately DS is wise to me and will kick the blanket/cloth off himself nonetheless and spray me about every other day.

Question 2 for those with sons... Do you wipe at every diaper change? Nope, I only wipe him for the poopie diapers (and I make sure to check all around his boy parts b/c poop can get wedged in the darndest places!). If it's just a pee diaper I'll make sure his skin isn't wet/damp and if it is I'll use a cloth-like paper towel (the ones left over from our pre-wipes stage) to dab at the area and get it dried off before putting a fresh diaper on. Unfortunately for us almost all of his diapers are pee/poop combo so it's rare that he has just a pee diaper. Those are the easiest and quickest to change, I love them! Every time DS farts, a little something comes out so there's always something that needs wiping at each change, aren't we lucky!?:p

I hate you! ;) I have a baby who now only cries when he’s hungry/wants to be changed (or if we’re not getting food to him fast enough) and hates to sleep. I’m hoping he gets a little better with the sleep thing. We’re lucky enough to get some 4-5 hour stretches every now and then during the night but they’re few and far between. And during the day he's always up-up-up save for a few 15-30 min naps.

penis direction- My DS is over 2yo, but I've never pointed his penis one way or another... just left it "as is". Someone else mentioned pulling back the skin on the penis to clean out fuzzies and strings! I try to do this once in a while, but DS now tells me "it hurts" :( . I've asked the dr. and he said it's probably just sensitive or cold?!? I really think something hurts him though so I'm going to bring it up again at our next appt.
I use wipes every change with DS.

Wow Delaney- I'm jealous too!!! That sleep schedule is wonderful!

I saw this link in another thread and thought I'd pass the information on to all of you. It's a Consumer Reports article on car seat tests.

Safety Alert:Most infant car seats fail our new front- and side-crash tests (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/child-car-booster-seats/car-seats-2-07/overview/0207_seats_ov.htm)

FTR, I have a Graco Snugride, but I was thisclose to getting the Peg Perego carseat to go with the PP stroller I have.

I saw that article rancid. We have the chicco car seat that came with the chicco travel system we bought. No idea how that tested since i doubt they tested it at all. It's pretty sad that they have all these laws about child safety seats (in MO the law is that they are in a safety seat/booster until 80lbs!!) Sheesh, that's like junior high. lol. Yet, the safety seats don't really help in a major accident. I have to admit to being slightly paranoid and looking both ways before i drive through an intersection!

Our Graco Comfortsport has EPS so that makes me feel a little better about that seat. I guess i'll have to go buy that edition of consumer reports or at least read that section at the store to see if my chicco infant seat was tested. I doubt it though. ;)

ETA: Phew: Just read this part of the article!

If you already own a Chicco KeyFit, Compass I410, Evenflo Embrace, or Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP, use it with vehicle safety belts, which passed our tests, not with LATCH, which didn’t. If you can’t get a tight fit with the safety belt, buy one of the two seats we recommend.

We have it installed with the safety belt! YAY!

And during the day he's always up-up-up save for a few 15-30 min naps.

So, what do you do with ds when he's awake? I'm running out of ways to entertain my ds especially when most things hold his attention for about half a minute. Okay, it's more like 5-10 mins. He seems to like laying in his crib and watching his mobile spin for the most amount of time. (makes me wish i'd bought a fisher price mobile with a remote! lol) LOVES baths but i can't keep him in the bath tub all day... well, not with water in it and he's not all that interested when it's empty :) He lasts 5-10 mins in the bouncer. Wont stay in the swing except to sleep (we've gone back to swaddling so he sleeps in his crib now too), playmat has about a 10 mins limit and this morning we tried out his new bumbo seat and that lasted about 10 mins. Singing, dancing, making silly faces, playing 'How Big', etc... all 10 mins TOPS! What is everyone else doing to entertain their dc?

Question: Re: Congestion: Last night i started swaddling ds again (in a swaddle me blanket). We had stopped when he had a cold because he was so congested laying flat in his crib so we were putting him in his swing to sleep and the swaddle blanket was riding up above his head sometimes which made me nervous. I noticed this morning after sleeping in his crib last night (9:30-3:30 and then 4:30-6 and again 7:00-9:00) that he was congested. We already have the crib on an incline. Is congestion normal? It didn't seem to last more than an hour or so after he got up for the day.

What is everyone else doing to entertain their dc? I'm running out of things too. He doesn't like the papasan chair for more than a few minutes. He doesn't like his playmat for more than 5 minutes. He will sometimes lay in his bassinet and look at the mobile and play quietly, but that's only when he's not in a fussy mood which has unfortunately been the case the last 2 days. :( He quiets down and stops fussing when he's being held or is in the sling. And I can only hold him in my arms and in the sling for so long before my arm or shoulder gets tired/sore. And although he JUST fell asleep in his swing after a few minutes I have no idea how long that will last. I'm going to take advantage of this time and go take a shower finally. I need to get out of the house today. I know he'll sleep in the car too.

My parents bought me a book for christmas called "Games Babies Play From Birth to Twelve Months" and it has a lot of ideas for what to do with your baby. For example, there are songs to sing to them when you are doing different things, like changing their diaper or giving them a bath and different ways to play with them based on their ageas. Its really helped me out since Mitchell is up most of the day and I feel like a bad mommy if I leave him on his play mat or in his swing for too long.

Question: When it's time for baby's next feeding, do you also do a diaper change every time? And if so, what order do you do things? Diaper change first, then feeding, or the other way around? Usually I'll change his diaper first, then feed him, and often have to change his diaper again just after feeding him. Would it be bad if I left him in a 3-4 hours' old dirty diaper for a feeding, then change him, or should I keep doing things the way I am?? :)

We change before every feeding. I change his diaper first while the bottle is in the warmer, then feed and burp. No change afterwards as he usually wants to go to sleep. He only poops every 3 days or so, so no worries about sitting in a poopy dipe. I know you have a super-pooper Rancid.;) Personally, I don't see why you couldn't wait until after feeding unless you know the diaper is full.

wiping at every change: like Rancid, my DS almost always has poop and pee. He probably has 4-6 poop diapers per day still (seems like a lot!). And every time there is a LOT! If he does just pee, I still use a wipe.

penis direction: Yes, we always tuck it down. I have not had any leaks with pee, so Iguess it is working.

sleeping: Last night DH slept from 9:30-4, with just a minor fussy period (he was sort of fussing in his sleep), where I brought him into bed with me. Then he slept from 4:30-8. He really does well at night. During the day, he only likes to really sleep in the sling or my arms (or if I take a nap with him in bed). But he does take about 3 2-3 hour naps during the day.

entertaining him: When he is awake, he is either fussing and I am trying to calm him or we are playing. We play on the play mat or I read him books or just make faces at him and talk to him. I think we have determined that he was not really getting enough to eat (low supply, apparently), so we are going to add some formula. That should make for less fussy time and more playing! Plus, he is almost 6 weeks, which is the most fussy time for most babies. So hopefully it calms down some.

DTD: I had my 6 week check-up today and everything was fine. I am starting the mini pill this weekend, so I guess we can do it any time now. I would like to, but it is hard to find the time!
