View Full Version : Baby Monitors for Two Kids

I am about to have my second child, and I am trying to figure out what to do about an additional baby monitor. My husband and I sleep with a fan in our room (because he snores :p ), so we cannot hear our kids without a monitor. We currently have the Fisher Price Sounds and Lights monitor --- is it possible to just buy another of these and use it on the different frequency? I know they sell monitors that work in two rooms, but they seem pretty expensive and I would like a cheaper option if possible.
Thanks!

I think what you're describing is what we do. To be honest, I have no idea what monitor we have, but I'm pretty sure it's Fischer Price. It's blue and white and lights up with red half circles. Is that the same?
Anyway, we have two monitors in our room, one for each kid, set to different frequencies. I had to experiment with placement and volume level in order to eliminate some static. We ended up with my 2.5 yr. old son's monitor on my dresser across from the bed and my 10 mo. old daughter's monitor next to the bed on my side (DH wouldn't wake up if his life depended on it :) ) We still have occasional issues with static, but I think that's more due to the other family in the cul-de-sac that has the same monitor for their 18 mo. old.
FWIW, we have a third receiver that we keep downstairs and I change the frequency depending on which child is napping or I need to listen for.

Probably not the best idea out there, but we have just one monitor. DS and DD's room are right next to eachother so I keep the monitor in the hallway outside their rooms. Our bedroom is on a different level and this has worked fine. I had intended to get a second monitor, but did this until I could get to the store. It worked well, so I never got another monitor.

In theory, I think that the 2 monitor idea is a good one. In reality, we could never get it to work. We could pick up our neighbor's kids on our monitor no problem (go figure), but for the life of us we couldn't get a second monitor to work in our house without getting the first monitor to spaz out.

I'm in the same situation. We also have the FP lights & sounds monitor, and love it. I had heard that adding an additional one will cause a lot of static, so I didn't think it was an option. I do know that when we have the monitor on the other frequency, we pick up very clear conversations from someone else's home, so not sure if that would still be the case if we added another one and tried to use it that way.
For now I'm not going to worry about it, since the new baby will be in our room for at least a few months, and DD will likely end up there, too ;) But at some point I'll have to figure something out.

I am sure there was a thread on this at one point (I think I started it) but I can't find it. Anyway, the only one that works for us is the Safety 1st monitor that comes with 3 monitors and 2 parent receivers. It's in the stores (BRU), but I can't find it online. We put the extra monitor in our basement/playroom. No problems whatsoever with static. Pricey though - I think we paid around $100.
When we only used one, we used the Fisher Price Sounds and Lights which we loved. I bought another and tried to use different frequencies, but it did not work.
One to stay away from is the Graco digital. We bought two singles - it supposedly cannot have any static because it's digital. But you have to hook up the signal and it very frequently loses the signal, meaning you have to go into the nursery, plug both the monitor and the receiver in, and let it the signal "catch" which requires a lot of loud beeping. After 3 consecutive nights of losing the signal and waking up both kids while trying to hook it back up, we ditched this monitor.
Hope that helps!

Ditto. I will say that we have static-y reception coming from my baby's room. We've experimented w/location, monitors, etc. to no avail. I think it's just her room is on the front of the house and faces the airport, older DD, our room and the playroom are all on the backside of the house. At any rate, this wouldn't be a problem for most! My ILs have this monitor at their beach house and my SIL has it at her house too. No complaints from any of them.

I have two of the Sony monitors that BRU sells and have not had any problem with static. There was a thread on this a while back and this is the one that got the most recommendations.
