Hi everyone.

My DH made some pretty awesome custom moldings (I keep promising pics, I promise I will post tonight). But now I'm looking for instances of chair rail and picture molding - can you post some instances for those of you that have photos of it?

I'm seriously looking for ideas! DIY is fabu if you can tell me, in addition to what you did, what pieces you used...sometimes I have a hard time picturing it.

Thanks! :)

not sure if this is what you are looking for but this is what my DH did in the foyer, living room, dining room, up the stairs and on the landing.

dumb question vjel - but that's wall behind the wood, correct? Or did he put wood over the wall (underneath the chair rail, behind the picture molding?)

vjel - your walls are absolutely beautiful! I really want to do this in my dining room.

I have the same question as MetheGirlie : Did you use wood on the lower part of the wall, or, did your DH simply paint it white and then added the molding and chair rail?

I have a friend who painted the wall green on top, then white on the bottom and added the picture frame molding and chair rail and it turned out beautifully! She said it was fast and relatively inexpensive since it was just white paint on the bottom instead of wood. If this is what you did as well, then, I am definitely going to do it! It looks so great!

Thanks in advance for your reply :D

hi MeTheGirlie and steviem , thanks for the compliments! My DH is very much a DIYer and too cheap to pay someone to do something he knows he can figure out how to do. :p

to answer your question, yes he just put the wood on the wall and then painted it white (using the same glossy paint used for window/door trim, KWIM?). here's a picture before he painted everything below the chair rail white. we had unfortunately painted w/ color before he decided to do all the molding around the stairs.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d938b3127cce9352726fb3fd00000016108AbMWbJu2Zs0

also, i know there was a website he went to to help him figure out/calculate the different cuts for the wood. it was a life saver for him b/c he made some mistakes in the beginning when he first started w/ the molding. if you want it, i can ask him what the web address is. just let me know. good luck w/ your molding projects! hope to see pics of the finished work! :)

Would love the web site. Thanks.

My DH is the SAME EXACT WAY with DIY projects. I need to go take some pics to post also...the Door jams he did are just amazing (my DH).

I just looked at it briefly...totally foreign to me! Hope your DH finds it useful. :)

vjel,

Love your couch and ottoman, do you mind if I ask where you got them from?

vjel

hi sunchaser ! we got the couch (it's called Apollo), matching chair and ottoman from Storehouse Furniture (http://www.storehousefurniture.com) . actually, the couch and chair we got from the Storehouse Outlet here. Both pieces were in perfect condition. The bench we got a few years ago at the regular store, not sure if they still carry or not.

Vjel, your walls and house decor is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Do you mind telling me where you got your candle/picture frame black wall mount that you have in your living room on the wall above your couch?

Thanks.

sunchaser, your welcome. :)

flygirl, your molding looks great too. it'll look awesome w/ paint!

ocgatita,my name is judy too. ;) thanks for the compliment! decorating does NOT come easy for us. we just look at store catalogs we like (ie. PB and Storehouse) and try to do the same at home w/o breaking the piggy bank! we actually got that wall easel from Pottery Barn. I don't think they sell it in this particular way anymore (w/ vase and candle holder), just w/ picture brackets like below:

Does anyone have current molding pictures to post? I'm getting ideas for some decorative moldings in our house.

None of these older pictures are showing up anymore?

Thanks!

Hi, nyclaura. The reason the pictures aren't showing up is that they're from shutterfly, which no longer allows hotlinking. If you want to look at the pics, you can right click on the red box, select properties and then copy and paste the url shown into your browser. That should get you to the pics.

In the mean time, heres our dining room:

Thanks MLA - those look very nice!

I was at a restaurant last night and they had a regular chair rail (around 34 inches up) and then another decorative "chair rail" just about 12 inches below the ceiling. The look was great! I'd like to do a similar thing in our formal LR but have never seen that type of molding done in a home. Hopefully I'll run across some pictures.

You're talking about a picture rail, I believe. It's something that you'll sometimes find in older homes. It's a really nice look. I haven't come across many pictures of it, though.

I'll do a search for picture rail - thanks for that term. It really looked terrific. I think it would fit well with our very old house.

Here are some pictures of picture rails.

You can buy hooks to hang pictures from...Picture Rail Hooks (http://houseofantiquehardware.com/s.nl/sc.13/category.142/.f?GCID=S14464x003&gtkw=picture+rails&partner=ypc)

That's interesting because I don't actually like the picture rail with pictures attached to it! But plain I thought it looked great in the rest. With all the pictures it seems busy to me.

Thanks for posting that! Clears up whether or not I'll be adding frames on it!!

You can also use picture rail hooks that blend into the railing and fishing line for hanging the picture so it is "invisible". They're very common here in the old SF Victorians.

Hi petdoc- I took some photos of our crown and base moulding, as well as some wainscotting/paneling we have in our house. Sorry about the photo colors/quality...I'm still learning how to use my camera! I remember looking everywhere for pictures when we were doing our various trims, and I could never find anything so I hope this helps!

For our crown, we used Cove and I think we have the same base board as Taffers:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2734/4130316648_81e2d9bafb.jpg

One neat idea that we got from one of the contractors was to "build-out" the crown moulding with a base board. We did this in our entry and in rooms that had a coffered ceiling. It looked like this when they were installing--
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2700/4129545861_7fc9ae6279.jpg

And then the finished product--

Taffers: WOW! I love everything. Did you do that yourself? Does that style of baseboard have a specific name? It is exactly what I am looking for but can't find at the big box stores. You are right, it is difficult to find inspiration pics.

TOMama: Building up the crown is a great idea. I wish we had your gorgeous ceilings and archways. Our ceilings do need redone. I wonder how hard it would be to retrofit a tray? Hmmmmmmm..... Our fairly inexpensive molding update may have just become quite expensive ;)

Maybe this will work. I still can't get any of my flikr oix to pot (just get red xs) so I am copying from what I have posted in other threads about different topics but the mouldingd just happened to be in the pics.

Most of our mouldings are built of of two or three pieces. It gives a really nice look an dwas one of teh more attractive features of this house when we bought it.

This is three pieces of moulding. It is the most elaborate in the house and is in the foyer, sitting room/study and dining room.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3529/4014557191_4aba0bf3ce.jpg

Another shot:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3479/4015321332_b36589173e.jpg

This is two of the three pices (bottom piece s missing) and is in the remainder of the main floor of our house. We discovered the "build up" process when we were trying to find matching moulding to complete our powder room (which had none, and all moulding had been done by previous owners).

Yup, we did it all...or DH and my dad did it all! ;)

I asked DH, and he doesn't know if the baseboard has a name...we got it at World of Moulding, but I think they have those baseboards at Home Depot! I think the reason we got it at WOM is because we have curved walls in our house so we had to get some rubber pieces for around those curves. If you live in Southern CA, WOM is the best!!

jajacobson: I have seen your pics in other threads and always love your sense of style. I am swooning over the triple layer molding.

Taffers: Nope, we live in Iowa. No WOM here :( Too bad we don't live in SOCal or I would be hiring your DH and dad ;) I will double check at Home Depot to see if they do have them here. I may have missed them.

petdoc08: Thanks! I wish I could take credit for it, but lik I said, most of it was in place when we moved in. It was some of the "good bones" the house had, otherwise being overshadowed by the original linoleum, carpeting, appliances and hideous wallpaper!
