FI and I are seriously considering a honeymoon at Lake Tahoe. We'll be getting there the weekend before Thanksgiving and leaving the weekend after. I expect to see some snow, but I'm wondering if it will be enough to ski on. Also (since FI and I have never been skiing before), what other cool stuff is there to do in the area that time of year? Suggestions, anyone?

Usually, Thanksgiving is the 1st weekend people I know start going up for skiing. There's also sledding, snowshoing, gambling. You HAVE to go to Red Roof Waffle Hut at least once for breakfast. Some of the ski resorts have inner tubing (I belive Alpine is one). Honestly, if you don't like to ski a week might be too long...but if you end up loving to ski, it might be just enough. Tahoe is close enough to other areas though that if you decide to explore with a rental car, it would be possible.

We were in Breckenridge, Colorado the week before Breck opened last year (week prior to Thanksgiving). Colorado had snow, but not much! We looked into time shares in Tahoe since that's where we honeymooned a few years ago, but I found that many of the Tahoe ski resorts didn't even open until just before Christmas. Their ski season is later than Colorado, I guess because the elevation is lower.

Last year, we spent a weekend in Tahoe the first week in November and while it was cooler than where we live, it was nowhere near snowing. It was nice though because it had that crisp mountain air that I love and it was less crowded than during ski season.
Do you know which part of Tahoe you want to stay in? Personally, I'm a fan of Squaw Valley and the area around the Hyatt (North Shore). I cannot stand the South Shore.

I second the vote for North Lake Tahoe, not the South Tahoe shore. And I think the California side is nicer too.

Well, it looks like since the slopes probably won't be open yet, and it will be too cold to really do any other fun stuff, we're going to Puerto Rico instead.

I went skiing there at Thanksgiving this past year and it was great. We had lots of trails open and GREAT snow.
