I know that we're supposed to wear pads after delivery until the bleeding stops, but what kind are the best ones? I haven't purchased pads since I was a teenager. Do we need to get the super absorbant kind or will just regular do?

First off, take as many of the hospital's small-mattress-sized ones that you can. ;)

I needed pretty heavy duty ones, particularly a nighttime one that is longer. I liked the wings on Always pads.

I also needed heavy pads. My hospital gave me a bunch - they lasted about a week I guess. Otherwise I bought the overnight pads.

The hospital also gave me a nice stock of their thick pads, but I bought the largest absorbency that Always had. Stock up on the nighttime ones also, they are longer and will protect you during the night. I like Always because they are dry (as in dry-weave on top of the pad), and they wrap around and protect everywhere. I have had to use them a lot after surgeries and such.

I brought a pack of Always Ultrathins Overnights with Wings to the hospital, never opened it. Turned out I LIKED their Cadillacs, especially when my nurse fileted them open and filled the middle with ice. After I went home and was wearing regular clothes (and regular undies!) again, though, I found the Always much more comfortable and plenty absorbent enough for what I needed. If you can find a variety pack, so much the better, I stepped down through heavy-moderate-light flow packs. And you'll need lots, I had an episiotomy and two tears to obsess over keeping pristinely clean (well worth the effort for how well it all healed!)

My sister bought adult incontinence pads...is that overkill? I figured I'd just steal from my dog's bag of adult incontinence pads...Maybe not though, as it sounds like I'm overestimating how much flow there will be.

The first week pp will be the worst. I used StayFree Overnight Maxi Pads w/ wings (wore them day & night). Those worked great. I thought it'd be a lot worse than it actually was. The first 2 days there was a lot, but I was in the hospital then and using their super size pads with the mesh panties, which BTW are also awesome.

I used the Poise pads for about a week or so afterwards - they were cupped rather than flat so they didn't brush against stitches - the ones my hospital gave were too thin and I leaked out the sides. After I switched to the Kotex thin with wings.

The ones at the hospital are loooooong thick Always with no wings. You also end up sticking them together so they overlap, you bleed so much. Take as many of these as you can - they usually leave a full package of them by your bed in your room since you have to change them so often. Ask for extras, they will likely give them to you!
I used the super-ultra-mega overnight Always with wings. Buy the big package!

I bought three packs of Always Overnights with Wings (not the thin version). I think there are 14 per pack, is that enough, or am I going to need way more than that? It also never ocurred to me to buy step down pads. LMAO I hate pads and havent bought any in like 15 years. LOL

waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than that probably. I bled for 5-6 weeks with each child. Basically nonstop, then a couple dry days, then my period returned. That bitch.

Ah, all well. I had bought one pack and my sister laughed at me and said that was so not enough. So I picked up two more packs. Gawd I hate pads.

I think this is plenty to start. I think I only went through two of the maxi overnights before I stepped down to a smaller version of the Always.

I wouldn't worry about having enough for the whole 5-6 weeks of lochia. You may want a little break to run out to the store by yourself while your babies are sleeping or you can send hubby out to pick up more if needed. Test his manhood. :p

I felt like a moron in the feminie hygeine aisle, reading every package. I had no idea what I was looking for since I never wore pads, so I know where you are coming from. :D

LMAO -- I had to do that already. I've been on bedrest for about 17 weeks now, and after our hospital trip this past week I needed some panty liners. So I sent him to the store for some.

I just am so looking forward to being able to walk again, and wondering how long it will take to not have incredible amounts of hip/pelvic pain. I pretty much can not walk now.

or, go out yourself and make him take care of the newborn. That'll really test it.

I don't like the Always. I found that they were too scratchy for my liking. They tended to hurt. I used store brand thick maxis, then switched to long thin ones.

With my ds the hospital provided me with full bags of pads. I brought some home with me. With my dd it was a different hospital and while I stocked up on diapers and stuff from them, they didn't have any pads for me to take with me(I even supplied my own the morning after delivery)
