Should I shave my dogs...

I have two dogs, one is a yellow lab and one is possible chow/rottie mix (with shepherd type hair). One of our friends said that his dad has their lab shaved in the summer...the dog seems happier and it doesn't shed nearly as much.

So here's my question...should we have our dogs shaved? The shedding is crazy nuts right now...and they both (especially my boy with longer hair) seem super hot. Is it strange to shave a relatively shortish hair dog??

Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know if I would shave a lab, especially if the only reason is that he's shedding. He'll still continue to shed, just shorter hairs. I used to shave my Lhasa every summer, but that was because she had horrible allergic skin disease and it helped us stay on top of it; in cases where there is a distinct medical advantage I'd do it.
