Hi~I've been thinking about this situation. We're planning on TTC soon and we've decided that I should be a SAHM. Did you tell your principal before the end of the year that you're staying at home? Or did you wait it out til beginning/middle of summer to let them know? I guess I'm kind of concerned because I don't want something to go wrong where we have a ton of medical expenses due to an unexpected difficult birth or something of that nature. I know I'm going to get that question immediately after my co-workers find out - and they'll just blab it all over the place if I even mention I'm thinking of SAH. Any words of advice?

Thanks,
Miriam :)

I'm a teacher and plan to quit my job when we get pregnant and have a baby. I will NOT be telling my principal, students, etc... until the 2nd trimester, even if i am due to give birth during the school year. I definitely wouldn't tell them about us TTC either since who knows how long that could take and i don't want anyone knowing when we do start.

ETA: Oh wait--i think i misunderstood your question. You mean when will you let people know that you don't plan to come back the next year when you're *already pregnant*, right?

In that case it will depend on when i'm due. If it works out that i'm pregnant when contracts for the next year are issues and i know i won't be back i'll let them know at that time. Otherwise i'd discuss it when questions about maternity leave come up.

I adore my school and my principal, so I wanted to tell him relatively early, just so he could plan. I actually told him around 8 weeks and waited to announce to the rest of the staff until the second trimester. Around February, I made an appointment and told him I wouldn't be coming back, since I think the school starts hiring in the Spring. I figured this would also help my chances of returning, since I want to teach at this school again in a couple of years. He was very grateful I told him early, wished me well and mentioned that he had some very part-time options for me if I wanted (grading, yearbook assistant, etc.). I hope to stay connected with this school so I can return.

If I didn't have a good relationship with the principal, I probably wouldn't have told him until the end of the year. I know a teacher who planned on leaving mid-year (Christmas) and announced it early. However, they found her replacement in October and she was fired early (it was a private school--I think they have more power).

Anyway, I took the rest of the year to get my developed lesson plans in order and prepare for the next teacher. It was great to have it out in the open, especially when I started showing in early April.
