My dog has small, pimple-like pink bumps in her ear. She has also been scratching a lot. My DH is taking her to the vet tomorrow to see if she has ear mites.

I've been looking up ear infections in dogs online and I can't find the answer to a question I have (and I know DH won't ask the vet).

If my dog does have ear mites or some other infection, do we need to toss out her bedding, wash all our bedding, etc?? Basically sterilize the whole house? I mean, of course, I'd wash hers and ours, but to what extreme do I need to go? We have a newborn in the house and I don't want to take any chances; but at the same time, I don't want to go to extremes if I don't have to (I'm tired!! LOL).

Thanks!!!

Dog ear mites are species specific- you don't need to worry about your newborn being infected. :)

The most common causes of ear infections are yeast and bacteria, but are not considered contagious.

has your dog been in contact with some unfamiliar animals? it takes a whole lot for an older dog to become infected with ear mites. not a doctor...but in general practice, we saw a whole lot of ear problems with allergies...be it environmental or food. if it's a yeast infection, you should be able to smell it-it has a distinctive odor.

Thanks!

The dog has allergies, so she got a shot, something rubbed in her ears, and we have pills to give her for a while.

That takes a load off my mind!
