Im currently defrosting our wedding cake to honor the tradition of eating it a year later. and I'm just curious, how many of you actually waited the full year to eat it.....and how did it taste? :D

Ours was cheesecake and we ate it at our 1 month anniversary....because we knew it would taste better...and it was YUMMY! :)

Sadly, it was nasty.

It was really really good. I wrapped it in plastic warp, foil, and kept it in the box and wrapped that too!

We had cake left over from the wedding and my mom has kept it in her deep freeze. I thawed it out a few times before our anny to eat some and it was still moist and very yummy!! I want to get one more piece from her and throw out the rest :o

For the actual anny my baker made a fresh top layer for us for free that we still haven't cut into

It was really really good. I wrapped it in plastic warp, foil, and kept it in the box and wrapped that too!

That's exactly what we did and our cake was really good.

Mine tasted great! It was wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in a plastic container given to us by the cake maker. I defrosted it in the fridge. I ate it at room temperature and fridge temperature - fridge temp was better.

We also took care in wrapping it up and it tasted so good on the 1st anniversary, we kept some and had it for our 2nd anniversary...it was good then too.

Ours was nasty - but it could have been better wrapped I think.

Ours was great. It was moist and the filling was super yummy! We wrapped it really well in saran wrap, freezer foil, and the box it was given to us in. We also wrapped it up that night.

Yummy. We wrapped well (foil, more foil, plastic freezer bag) and let it defrost for a day or so. I'm not sure if it was as good as the wedding day b/c I didn't get a piece that day. :(

Ours was just as good as our wedding day!
It was wrapped in two layers of plastic wrap, two layers of tinfoil and in a freezer ziploc bag....so it was perfectly preserved!

My DH held an intervention saying he didn't want his pregnant wife to die of salmonella on her 1st anniversary. I gave in to his worries...but I REALLY wanted it! ;)

We just ate ours last weekend on our 1 yr anniversary.
It wasn't bad for the way it was wrapped. You gotta love my dad for trying to help. It was only wrapped up once in Press N Seal wrap and then put in a gallon ice cream bucket.
It was alittle dry (not like fresh moist cake) and the icing just pretty much fell off the sides as we cut into it. It wasn't the worst thing I've eaten. We each had a piece and were satisfied. It was just enough for the memories and tradition.

Same here! I only ate the small piece DH shoved in my mouth/up my nose after we cut the cake. I guess I was too caught up with my fabulous party. :)

Ours was delicious! It was in the box from our "cake lady" and then had 2 layers of plastic wrap & aluminum foil. (Mom did a great job freeze-proofing for us!) A few days before our anniversary, I moved it from the freezer to the fridge & then each day took off some of the wrapping. On our actual anniversary, I left it out on the kitchen counter for a while to get it back to room temp. The cake was just as moist as it had been on our wedding day!

When we went for my cake tasting, the baker said, "If you survive a year of marriage with this guy, you deserve a fresh cake on your anniversary!". She said it jokingly of course because he was being goofy and obnoxious and asking for all sorts of bizarre things for our cake like a suspension bridge.....
Anyway, I never ate the cake on our wedding day except for a morsel when we cut.....I was having too much fun, so we decided to just eat if after we got home from the honeymoon two weeks later. It was yummy:D

Ours was quite yummy after one year, about as good as I remember our tiny piece being on our wedding day. How's it wrapped can make a difference, I think. I can't remember exactly how it was done, but I know it had some layers of aluminum foil as well as plastic wrap. It was a traditional white cake with buttercream icing.

Ours was really good! The only thing that didn't keep all that well was the sugar flower on top- it sort of looked like it melted, but the cake itself (and all the chocolate ganache) was fresh and yummy!
We put it in a tupperware container and then a ziplock and it stayed fine.

It was very good, almost as good as on my wedding day. My mom took a lot of time to wrap it so it wouldn't get all gross, and it was great.

Ours was SO YUMMY and fresh tasting! We used the Food Saver to seal it up. I wish we had saved some more to have next month on our second!

Ours was okay. We couldn't get over the fact that we were eating a cake that was a year old, so we only ate a few bites.

It was really really good. DH & I aren't really cake people, so we just fed each other a big bite and tossed the rest, but if we WERE cake people we would have scarfed the whole thing. :)

Ours tasted very good and fresh. We celebrated our 1-year anniversary with our immediate families, so - everyone got a slice and finished theirs! :) Since I was 5 months pregnant at the time, I decided to pass on the frosting, just in case, but ate the rest of it.

I wouldn't know because someone took our top layer at the wedding.

no, I'm not still bitter... :o

It wasn't the best cake ever, but I think the fondant on the outside helped it stay edible.

A friend (here on CC!) made us a replica cake for our third anniversary and it was better than the original!

i can officially chime in to my OP!
our cake was pretty good too! it was wrapped up pretty tight so there was no freezer-burn etc. DH and I just had a slice last night...but we threw the rest out. It was good and all, but it DID have kind of a weird after taste. but I'm glad we honored the tradition, we even had milk in our toasting flutes! :D

HA!
actually our wedding cake was chocolate frosted! and the frosting tasted GREAT! still rich, and chocolatey....i think it was the filling that tasted a little "old". we had choc. mousse on one layer and cannoli filling on the other.

dont get me wrong though, it tasted damn good for a 1-yr old cake!!! :D

Hmph, our caterers ended up cutting and serving our top layer. Oh well!
I didn't really get to taste my cake at all--I got a tiny bit of frosting when we cut and fed it to each other, because he was being very careful not to mess up my lipstick :). Then I was too busy to sit and eat.

We had a "cannoli cake," which was layers of pastry and ricotta filling. It was very well preserved (thanks to MIL), but there was really no way to keep it from being a little soggy. We each had a few bites and tossed it. We also had our baker make a new 9" cake for us, and we ate all of that one!

After 1 year in our freezer, the top layer of our cake tasted pretty awful. It was sealed really well, and I looked forward to eating it on our anniversary; however it was stale and crumbly. We tried to eat some of it, gave some to my parents, but threw the rest out.

We just had ours last night! Anniversary!

Ours was triple wrapped, so it was not freezer burned at all nor did it taste like freezer. The icing was freaking delicious but the cake was pretty dry. We each had a tiny piece and tossed the rest.

Our cake was dry, too. I've been the one going on and on about the cake and I think DH ate more than I did. It was just too dry for me. The icing still smelled so yummy. I haven't thrown the rest out because I like the smell of the icing!

That's what we did too and it was PERFECT!!! We let ours thaw at room temp for (gosh, I think) like a day or two. We ate it at room temp and kept it in the fridge for a few days until it was gone. Frosting was perfect and the cake was still moist.

I miss our cake so much, it was so good. I'm thinking I might have her make a cake on our big anny's - 5, 10, 15, etc...YUMMY!

It was freezer burned, and yuck! I wrapped it really well and I even checked on it a few months prior to our anniversary and tried it and it tasted good but on our anniversary it was pretty gross. We had a bite or two and tossed it. The icing was very sugary tasting.

It was okay. It tasted a bit old but not too bad. The icing seemed a little more crunchy/sugary though. I think the cat ate more of it than we did, LOL!

Just wanted to chime in since our first anniversary was this past Monday: our cake, which survived a move to a new house last December and only being wrapped in (tons of) aluminum foil, held up pretty darn well - only a teeny-tiny bit dry, but still very tasty!

Mine was at m parents house and while they were on vacation they had a major power outage and lets just say nothing in the fridge survive :( oh well we had cupcakes and they were pretty good.

ours was pretty gross, but wasn't wrapped all that way. i think it only had 2 layers of plastic wrap. we actually got it out of the freezer, let it thaw while we were at dinner, and when we came back it the icing clumped down the side and it just looked awful. it didn't taste all that hot either.

Ours was awesome!! But our wedding cake was incredibly moist...the topper was very well preserved by my cake lady so I think that helped as well.

I felt bad but I wanted to keep eating it the days after the anniversary!

I may have already posted in this thread but ...
Ours was DELICIOUS! We used our vacuum sealer on it and it was super fresh a year later. We even moved houses in our first year and it was still fine :)

ours was um.. lost. my mil 'took care of it' for us (by giving it to out of town relatives while we were on our honeymoon. I spent the first anniversary on hosptial bedrest and we had our dd 10 days later. So for our DD's 1st birthday (10 days after our 2nd anniversary) we had her first birthday cake be the same as our wedding cake it was so yummy. I like a pp waited 2 years to taste my wedding cake. well I had a bite during the cake feed thing (and my husband actually fed me no smashing cake here) but I never got a slice.

Funny story to share on this... my friend and her DH had a wonderful wedding and preserved their cake top for their one-year anniversary. Immediately after the wedding, they went on a 2 week HM in Fiji... after a ridiculously long plane ride home, her DH was taking a shower and she took the cake out of the freezer and ate the whole thing! She only want to *taste* it, but.... ;) In her defense, it was an awesome cake!

We didn't get to eat ours on our anniversary. My cousin accidently dropped it when we were leaving the wedding. She felt so bad!! I didn't care though. We went out of town for our anniversary and a resturant brought us desert. So that was our cake! :)

Ours was great. My BIL wrapped it for use and I think he first wrapped it in a few of layers of plastic wrap and then a few layers or so of foil, then put the whole thing in a large tupperware container.

Our was fantastic and just as good as, if not better than, the mini-cake from the same bakery (same flavors) that we bought just in case the year old cake tasted lousy.

(PS. Laura if memory serves me right, we had the same baker so I am not surprised to hear yours was delicious too!)

Ours was yesterday. The cake was delicious! Tasted as good as it did the wedding day.

It wasn't too much of a surprise, though. We had some leftover that his parents had kept in their freezer. We brought it home about 2 months ago and picked at it for weeks.

I think part of the reason it was so good because of how well it was wrapped up.
