Great idea for a thread. I'm planning on doing a montage for DS's first birthday and I'm already thinking of songs and have been at a loss. Keep them coming. Thanks!

Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield always makes me think of my DS. It was on the radio a lot around the time he was born or shortly after.

What about Celine Dion's "Miracle" or "Have You Ever Been in Love"?

I know they're kinda mushy, but I was thinking of using "Have You Ever Been in Love" for the hospital/newborn pics and then something like "My Wish" for the rest. Great timing on this thread!! :)

For hospital/newborn pics: I Knew I Loved You

I'm not sure of the artist. I think there is a country version and a pop version. Does anyone know? It goes: "I knew I loved you before I met you, I think I dreamed you into life..."

Celine Dion has some more good songs for a boy:

A New Day
Beautiful Boy
also....gender neutral
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (though I prefer the Roberta Flack version)

...and for a girl:
A Mother's Prayer (although not very light-hearted for a video)

I went back and listened to Let Them Be Little by Billy Dean after suggesting it in your LJ, Alanna, and I love it even more each time I hear it. I get teary-eyed everytime. For those of you who aren't familiar with the song, here's the lyrics. It would be perfect for a photo montage CD. :)

I can remember when you fit in the palm of my hand.
You felt so good in it; no bigger than a minute.
How it amazes me you're changin' with every blink.
Faster than a flower blooms, they grow up all too soon.

So let them be little,
'Cause they're only that way for a while.
Give 'em hope, give them praise,
Give them love every day.
Let 'em cry, let 'em giggle,
Let 'em sleep in the middle,
Oh, but let them be little.

I never felt so much in one little tender touch.
I live for those kisses, your prayers an' your wishes.
An' now you're teachin' me how only a child can see.
Tonight, while we're on our knees, all I ask is:

Please, let them be little,
'Cause they're only that way for a while.
Give them hope, give them praise,
Give them love every day.
Let 'em cry, let 'em giggle,
Let 'em sleep in the middle,
Oh, but let them be little.

The so innocent, precious soul:
You turn around, an' it's time to let them go.

So let them be little,
'Cause they're only that way for a while.
Give them hope, give 'em praise,
Give them love every day.
Let 'em cry, let 'em giggle,
Let them sleep in the middle,
Oh, but let them be little.

Let them be little.

I just showed the one I made of DS at his birthday party yesterday. Everyone loved it. It was about 8 minutes long and I used the following songs in order:

One Day, Two Days, Three Days Old - Elizabeth Mitchell (It is on You Are My Flower. You can listen to a little bit of it on amazon.com and buy it on iTunes)
Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Send Me on My Way - Rusted Root

I had a hard time finding songs that would fit a boy and were not country. I also liked the song Beautiful Boy by John Lennon, but could not buy it on iTunes. Celine Dione also has a version of it, but I don't care for her.

In the end we ended up going with "Let them Be Little" by Billy Dean and "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts. Both country, so they flowed well together, IMO.
It was a huge hit at his b-day party!! :)

"Catch the Moon" by Lisa Loeb (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B0001DMVM6/ref=s9_asin_image_1/102-5558706-1248944)

Can you catch the moon
And hold it in your hands
Cause I can catch the moon
And I do my moondance
I press my hands together
And slowly spin around
Tell my moonbird sister
To pick me up
And we'll go flying
Can you see what shines
When it's dark outside
Cause I can see the moonshine
When I look in your eyes
When I catch the moon
I throw it to you
And you'd be happy too
I do that for you
We can dance together
And slowly spin around
Cause you're my moonbird sister
I can see you, you're laughing

You can catch me
You'll be happy
I can see you
You're laughing

You can catch me
You'll be happy
I can see you
I'm so happy

You can catch me
I'm so happy
I can see you
You're laughing

Wonder by Natalie Merchant
These are Days by 10,000 Maniacs (N. Merchant)

My DD has Down syndrome and Wonder is so appropriate it gives me chills:
Doctors have come
from distant cities
just to see me
stand over my bed
disbelieving what they're seeing

they say I must be one of the wonders
of god's own creation
and as far as the can see they can offer
no explanation

newspapers ask
intimate questions
what confessions
they reach into my head
to steal the glory
of my story

they say I must be one of the wonders
of god's own creation
and as far as the can see they can offer
no explanation

I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
"know this child will be able"
laughed as my body she lifted
"know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience
and with faith
she'll make her way"

people see me
I'm a challenge
to your balance
I'm over your heads
how I confound you
and astound you
to know I must be one of the wonders
of god's own creation
and as far as you can see you can offer me
no explanation

I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
"know this child will be able"
laughed as she came to my mother
"know this child will not suffer"
laughed as my body she lifted
"know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience
and with faith
she'll make her way"

Shannon - I was just coming in here to post "These are the Days." :) Then I re-read the lyrics to "Wonder," thought of you and Noa and now my DH wants to know why I'm crying. :o

Another great one - Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" (different than the Rod Stewart song by the same name):

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

100 Years TOP PICK! Five For Fighting

This is it! I've been trying to figure out what the name of this song is for a long time for just this thread. I heard it today, looked it up on the radio station's web site, and lo and behold, it's already in the thread.... I think this is a fabulous song for a CD montage about a baby's first year.

Here are the lyrics:

I'm 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
I'm 22 for a moment
She feels better than ever
And we're on fire
Making our way back from Mars
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
I'm 33 for a moment
Still the man, but you see I'm a they
A kid on the way
A family on my mind
I'm 45 for a moment
The sea is high
And I'm heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy, Time to lose yourself
Within a morning star
15 I'm all right with you
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
Half time goes by
Suddenly you’re wise
Another blink of an eye
67 is gone
The sun is getting high
We're moving on...
I'm 99 for a moment
Dying for just another moment
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
15 there's still time for you
22 I feel her too
33 you’re on your way
Every day's a new day...
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey 15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but there are a number of iMix lists on iTunes with great ideas. I don't know exactly how to tell you to find it, but I ran across it searching for a particular children's song and ended up buying about 10 different songs.

*bump*

I am looking for a song to do a photo montage with. I love the sound of the new Nickleback song (I think it is called "Far Away") but it is not really appropriate for a baby montage. So I am looking for something with a smiliar sound but that would be appropriate. Another song I would love to use is "Bittersweet Symphony" but again, right sound, wrong words!

Any more ideas out there?

For anyone who is doing a montage for two kids -- twins, close siblings...

We're Going to Be Friends, by Jack Johnson -- it's off the Curious George soundtrack. It's a little folksy, melodic, acoustic sound. My sister used it for her two girls (1 & 3) and it was awesome.

Kind of on the same topic but not. I bought a song from I tunes but when I try to import it into Windows Movie Maker it won't let me. How do you do this?? What am I doing wrong??

ShannonGH
03-21-2007, 03:11 PM
Roxy- I don't know much about this...just enough to pipe in a little but hopefully someone else can explain it better. Basically the songs you buy from itunes are copyrighted so you can't import them into other sites, etc. The only way I know how to get around it is to burn the itunes song onto a cd. Then save the song from the cd (that you just burned) to your computer as a .mpg file (or whatever format you need). Hope that makes sense.

Ditto what Shannon said. It took me weeks to figure this out. I buy my music, its downloaded into whatever format they download in. Then I burn to a CD then rip it to my computer in the format I want.

I'm working on a First Year montage for DS and was brainstorming for songs. I remember seeing an interview with Don Henley when the album that this song is on came out. He said this song was about his daughter. I thought it could be good for baby montages.

TAKING YOU HOME
By: Don Henley
I had a good life
Before you came
I had my friends and my freedom
I had my name
Still there was sorrow and emptiness
'Til you made me glad
Oh, in this love I found strength I never knew I had

And this love
Is like nothing I have ever known
Take my hand, love
I'm taking you home
I'm taking you home

There were days, lonely days
When the world wouldn't throw me a crumb
But I kept on believing
That this day would come

And this love
Is like nothing I have ever known
Take my hand, love
I'm taking you home
I'm taking you—home
Where we can be with the ones who really care
Home, where we can grow together
Keep you in my heart forever

And this love
Is like nothing I have ever known
Take my hand, love
I'm taking you home
Taking you home

And this love
Is like nothing I have ever known
Take my hand, love
I'm taking you home
I'm taking you home

We're using:

"Forever Young" by Bob Dylan
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow"/"What a Wonderful World" mix by Iz
"In Your Time" by Bob Seger - it's really pretty, and the words are perfect:

In your time
The innocence will fall away
In your time
The mission bells will toll
All along
The corridors and river beds
Therell be sign
In your time

Towering waves
Will crash across your southern capes
Massive storms
Will reach your eastern shores
Fields of green

Will tumble through your summer days
By design
In your time

Feel the wind
And set yourself the bolder course
Keep your heart
As open as a shrine
Youll sail the perfect line

And after all
The dead ends and the lessons learned
After all
The stars have turned to stone
Therell be peace
Across the great unbroken void
All benign
In your time
Youll be fine
In your time

I keep lengthening my show and I am up to 3 songs:

"Be My Little Baby" by the Ronettes (newborn, first few months)
"Little Wonders" by Rob Thomas (where first song ends through end of his first year)
"These are the Days" by Natalie Merchant (slides featuring DS with individual family members and a quote about each family member)

The actual slideshow is turning out great! I am using Power Point and have had a ton of fun discovering all of the neat features. It brings me to tears already and it is only half done! I didn't know you could do so many things with PP.

Bumping up for new ideas..I am working on one for my DD 2nd and 3rd year...I am way behind.

I just read through the thread and one song I have to add is Daughter by Loudon Wainwright III - it is the song played at the end of the movie Knocked Up.

“Daughter” is a tear-jerker about his young daughter—but also maybe Martha?—with the most sentimental/anti-sentimental lyrics of the year: “That’s my daughter in the water / Every time she fell I caught her / Every time she fell / That’s my daughter in the water / I lost every time I fought her / I lost every time.”

I turn off the world and listen to you sigh
And I will sing my Angel's Lullaby

Know I'm forever near
The one you can always call
Right all you know to fear
Are the shadows on your wall
I'm here close enough
To kiss the tears you cry
And I will sing my Angel's Lullaby

So tell me how to stop the years from racing
Is there a secret someone knows?
I'll never catch all the memories I'm chasing
I'll never be ready to let go

And when the world seems cold
And you feel that all of your strength is gone
There may be one tiny voice
Your reason to carry on
And when I'm not close enough
To kiss the tears you cry
You will sing your Angel's Lullaby
Let this be our Angel's Lullaby

I looked on the first post and didn't see this one... My oldest DD LOVES

Here Comes the Sun~ Sheryl Crow (original by the Beatles)

I like You Raise Me Up~ Josh Groban (Becoming a mom really changed everything about me and made me a better person...I credit my children for that more than anything).

Octopus' Garden~ The Beatles (it's just a GREAT fun song)

If I think of more I'll post them

I think I've picked the songs for DS's montage (yes I'm planning way ahead). We're going with The Beatles-
Here Comes the Sun
Ob La Di Ob La Da
When I'm 64

None are necessarily about mother/fathers/babies but they're all fun and happy songs. :)

I really must get on making my DS's second photo montage CD - but for the first year we used:

Til Kingdom Come - Coldplay

Good Mother (http://lyricwiki.org/Jann_Arden:Good_Mother) by Jann Arden

On the Dad side:

Arms Wide Open (http://lyricwiki.org/Creed:With_Arms_Wide_Open) by Creed

I LOVE Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World - it's just so freaking beautiful... He also does a rendition of Twinkle Twinkle that's nice.

Shannon: Love those choices! Just might have to snag them for Sophia ;)! I did sappy songs for Eva's 1st bday and I was a mess. Upbeat would would definitely be good.

I'm making a photo montage for my aunt who has custody of her granddaughter due to some messy circumstances. I'd love to find a song about unexpected happy things (i.e. the baby was not planned but things are turning out great).

I'm on the hunt for some good fun boy songs for DS's 3rd birthday slideshow. Everything I seem to find is just too sappy. I'm thinking something more upbeat and about boys just being boys... (oh, or anything to do with tractors!)

This year we used:
100 Years (Five for Fighting)
Little Wonders (Rob Thomas)
Pictures of You (The Last Goodnight)
Beautiful Life (Fisher)
Taking You Home (Don Henley)

we've also used some Buddy Holly and the Barenaked Ladies in the past...that's upbeat

I just made a montage for DS's 1st birthday. I used Baby Mine by Allison Krauss for the super baby pictures. Then Somwhere over the rainbow/Wonderful world by IZ and last Let them be little by Billy Dean.

All pretty much sappy and maybe mentioned before.
