View Full Version : Shows You've Given Up On

The last "big" show I gave up on was ER several seasons back. I couldn't stand that they got rid of so many of the original cast members, but the final straw for me was when Carter ran off to Africa. I haven't watched since.

The most recent show I've given up on is The Class on CBS. I thought the premise ("THE CLASS is a comedy about a group of 20-somethings inextricably bound together by having been in the same third grade class.") was cute, and I'd been wanting a 30 minute sitcom to watch. There just aren't very many anymore, and certainly not any good ones. The first episode was eh, but I thought it might get better. It didn't. Every week was worse. The characters are all either 1) a-holes, 2) cheaters, or 3) dumbasses. I've washed my hands of it. And apparently none too soon, seeing as this is the description for next week's episode: "Holly's attempt at becoming weekend anchor fails miserably when she impales a bunny with her stiletto while reporting live from a petting zoo on Halloween." I hope it gets cancelled soon so another show will get a shot.

Which shows (old or new) have you given up on?

DH and I gave up on Jericho. I gave up a few weeks ago and he gave up after last week. Neither of us were really feeling it.

I gave up on Smallville. The Clark/Lana soap opera was hard to watch, and then she moved on to Lex. Yeah right. I got sick of the plots, too.

I'm with you on ER as well.

I'm still watching Jericho. It's not great, but it doesn't feel like a complete waste of time. At least not yet. Of course now that I don't have The Class to compare it to in terms of suckiness, my opinion might change.

Another one I gave up on this season was Kidnapped. OMG, that was a total snooze-fest. No suspense, no drama, and I didn't give a damn about any of the characters. That one actually did get cancelled (or put on "hiatus" ).

I gave up on ER when they killed off Mark. I've never cried so much about a character dying in my life. I mean, sobbing! I'm still mad at them about that. :( I also gave up on Law & Order YEARS ago. I used to love that show, but it went so far downhill. I can't believe they are still airing it. It's sad.

This season I've given up on What About Brian (new last year), Jericho and Help Me Help You. That's all so far, but there's still plenty of time for me to start hating some of my other new shows. ;) :D

Desperate Housewives - They keep opening up too many other plot lines without answering any current questions. Sunday, I gave up.

Law and Order: SVU - I just got bored.

I gave up on Related last year and it ended up being cancelled.

I gave up on ER years ago as well.

I gave up on 6 degrees about 20 minutes into it.

I gave up on DH after its first season.

Yes, that was so tragic! I tried to keep watching as long as I could after that, and I think the reason I reacted the way I did to Carter's exit was I was still so upset about Mark. I just couldn't take it anymore. I had been giving them so many "one more chances" and just said enough.

I gave up on 6 degrees about 20 minutes into it.

I think we have a new record! :D

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

I used to love the show the first season, and really appreciated having a TV show to look forward to on Sunday nights (since that's the only night I can count on being home to watch television).

Last season, I hung on alot longer than the critics, who immediately started saying it wasn't as good as the first. But, in the end, they were right: the boy-in-the-basement plot was just dumb, and without a compelling, overarching plot to tie everything together, it felt like the rest of the show descended into parody.

Nonetheless, I looked forward to this season, believing their promises that it would mark a return to form. Within 30 minutes of the first episode, I officially checked out. They're now on, what, the third character with a killing in their past, and the only likable, semi-realistic character (Lynette) is stuck with her husband's love child's baby mama.

Yeah, just writing the last part of that sentence encapsulates why I no longer watch Desperate Housewives.

I read it that way, too at first. :)

Me three. :o

I gave up on Ghost Whisperer after almost making it through the first season. It just seemed like it was the same story told in a different way week after week. I mean; how many dead people can she help 'cross over to the other side' before it just gets old? I also have somewhat given up on Medium; pretty much for the same reasons. It felt very repetitive after awhile. I may try to watch it if it ever comes back on this season, only because I really like Patricia Arquette.

One show that I gave up on after watching its season premiere show was Celebrity Duets. Its done with now, but I swear that was the most poorly put together reality show I've ever witnessed. Blech.

Deperate Housewives, Prison Break, Jericho

Although, there's not much on, so a lot of times I'll flip by & still watch parts of them. I read a trick ( ;) )to watching Jericho (so I don't think it's written poorly), so I'm trying it this week. Basically it involves me drinking heavily during the show.

I also gave up on ER several years ago. I still watch one episode every now and again if nothing is on.

CSI, all cities - couldn't keep up since I was watching so many other things and couldn't stand the fact that it is so depressing that people die each week.

Law and Order - same as CSI, too much depressing stuff.

Las Vegas after season 1, got bored with it.

ETA: I also gave up on Friends after maybe season 7 - just wasn't funny for me anymore.

for reality TV, The Bachelor and The Apprentice bit the dust in my mind, just couldn't take them anymore.

there are plenty of others, you have to make room for the new shows somehow, my DVR only has so much room :)

I hung on and watched the unwatchable Joey for season one and the first episode on season 2. I probably did this out of loyalty to Friends. Joey isn't Friends, that's why they're canceled.

I gave up on the Biggest Loser. I watched for 2 seasons but since they are on at Wednesdays (big watching, recording bonanza day there - Dancing w/ the Stars, Top Model, Lost, etc.), they got lost in the shuffle. Oh well...

I'm this close to not watching the Nine. The whole thing doesn't move along as fast as I like it. I'm still watching out of loyalty to Scott Wolf (yes I'm a Party of Five fan so I like it that Charlie & Bailey are on together back to back!) ;)

I gave up on ER years ago because of the time and my work schedule. I watched Desperate Housewives for a second and thought it was way too much for me. 7th Heaven again due to work schedule. I also gave up on 90210 back in the day because it got a little crazy to follow.

Desperate Housewives, although I still TiVo and watch it. It's just not appointment TV like it used to be.

I gave up on Survivor many years ago. I was all about Survivor for the first few seasons. I just got tired of it.

I gave up on Felicity towards the end as well. It just started to suck.

I've probably given up on more shows than I've stuck with. As for this season, I've already given up on The Class and 6 Degress before I even watched them (i.e. we TiVo'ed several epis of each before I finally said 'enough-I'm never going to watch these'). We gave up on Smith and Kidnapped since they got cancelled. I gave up on Brothers and Sisters half way through the first epi. We gave up on Close To Home a second time (meaning we gave up on it last year and tried it again this year). That's all I can think of right now.

Yes! I've never cried so hard over a TV show as i did when he died. (Second would be the epi when that baby died and he got sued - boy that show used to have some tear jerk moments!) When i hear that version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World i still get teary eyed and think of Dr. Greene. After that though, ER was dead to me.

But that's the fun part! :p

Actually, this past season I enjoyed the very beginning and the very end, but the entire middle I was ranting and raving and threatening to quit watching after every show. "That's it! I've had it! I'm not watching next week!" And then I would. I blame DH because he kept watching.

ETA: It wasn't his near death experiences that bugged me. It was the incredibly boring Killer Canisters of Doom plot line that went on and on and on...

I am surprised that noone else has posted the show I most recently gave up on. Grey's Anatomy. I was seriously the #1 fan during the first season! I just loved it. I thought the writing was so fresh, interesting, etc. Then, the plots started getting too ridiculous for a hospital show. During one show, Dr. Bailey brings her newborn baby TO the ER because she couldn't find someone to watch him/her. Are you kidding me? That show has been totally dead to me ever since. I have not watched one single minute of Season 3 and skipped most of the end of Season 2. Many doctors I know can't stand it either.

Gave up on ER long, long ago
Gave up on the Bachelor
Gave up on Numbers (started to majorly bore me)

And...I think I can beat the '20 minute' giving up record someone posted before me. I gave up on that new NBC show called "Heroes" after the first 5 minutes. I just hated it. I couldn't watch any further. ;)

ER - I kept watching after Dr. Greene died. What killed it for me was when the helicopter crashed on top of Dr. Romano (after he lost his arm to a helicopter propeller about a season earlier)...that was the jumping of the shark right there, if it hadn't done so before that point.

Also the Apprentice and Survivor. I watched the first 2 seasons of both and just didn't care enough to watch after that.

I'm on the verge of giving up on Desparate Housewives for the same reasons as everyone else. I pretty much can't stand any of the characters anymore and kind of feel that any of the turmoil they have in their lives they've pretty much brought on themselves in one way or another...I just don't care anymore.

As for new shows from this fall, there are several that DH and I both feel just kind of "eh" about. Usually it's pretty clear cut to us whether or not we want to continue watching a show (Heroes and Studio 60 are clear-cut winners for us). But we have been watching The Class, Jericho, Brothers and Sisters, and Friday Night Lights just kind of waiting to see if they get any better. We are done with The Class (it's just really bad), and I think we'll give the others another week or two to improve before cutting them loose.

I'm so glad someone else posted this, I cannot stand that show! I have a tendency to only half-watch shows while on the computer, unless it's something I'm really into. The Office gets my full attention, but, something like 7th Heaven gets half-attention.

To someone only half-watching Heroes, it's something like this:

"whisperwhisper....scary music....EXPLOSION"

Lather, rinse, repeat for a friggin' hour.

I deal with it because DH likes the show and has watched enough girly TV to last a lifetime.

The OC - it just seems wrong without Marisa - even though most everyone I know (except me) seemed to hate the character toward the end (probably done deliberately to pave the way for her death).

The View - after BW basically showed me how dishonest and calculating she was, I gave up on it. I can't stand Rosie O'Donnell. For someone who wants everyone to accept things HER way, she certainly is a judgemental b!tch.

Medium - After the first few shows, Patricia Arquette's voice just started cutting through my brain and I could no longer watch

(long time ago) Ally McBeal - Just lost interest in it and never saw the final season
Also the Apprentice and Survivor. I watched the first 2 seasons of both and just didn't care enough to watch after that.

Never thought I'd see the day, because I loved it so much, but I'm not watching Survivor this season. Hubby is, but I won't.

Gave up on ER years ago too.
I've also said "you're fired" to The Apprentice, and I've dumped The Bachelore/ette.
Liked the first season of Desperate Housewives, but then the plot just got too bizarre and disjointed.

And I know it's not really "giving up" if you've never really watched it in the first place, but I really, really tried to watch Big Brother, because many of my friends watch it, and I just can't. I find it more boring than watching paint dry. I just don't get the hype!

Without a Trace - like the show but it's on a bad night now

What about Earl - I'd probably still watch it, but it conflicts with Survivor (yes, DH and I still watch that)

I'm on the verge with Desperate Housewives, too. Studio 60 is still up in the air for me. Although we lost power last night when there was maybe 15 minutes left, and I haven't even tried to find out how it ended. So maybe that says something. :) I am enjoying Christine Lahti's character, though.

Studio 60- I gave it two episodes and that was enough.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition- It just got so cloying and manipulative. And it's on at the same time as Amazing Race, which is million times better.

Trading Spaces- It was getting boring even before Paige left, but that was the nail in the coffin.

The Real World- I realized I was just too darn old to appreciate watching a bunch of drunken college kids hooking up.

Still hanging in there (although fast-forwarding a lot) on Desperate Housewives, The Bachelor and The Apprentice. And apparently I am one of the only people out there who still loves Survivor.

ABC Cancels "Lost" After Entire Audience Gives Up On Series

Hollywood, CA--After a particularly confusing season premiere, the entire audience of the popular ABC televison adventure Lost threw their hands up in collective frustration after they refused to invest another moment of their time trying to figure out "just what the hell is really going on" with this show.

After the Neilsen rating organization reported that they could only identify four viewers who sat through the whole episode last Wednesday night, the network had no choice but to shut down production and pull the series from their fall lineup.

Avid TV watcher Glenn O'Dell gave us a rundown of last night's episode--at least as much as he was able to make sense of from the whole confusing mess. "Apparently, Sawyer, Jack, and Kate have been locked up all summer in some underwater dungeon that belongs to the Dharma Initiative--whatever that is! They spent the whole episode trying to escape their imprisonment, which is pointless, because they have no idea where they are and they are on a frickin' island anyway!"

"Frankly, at this point, I could care less," said O'Dell. "I hope they all die. Instead, I'm going to concentrate my efforts this year on figuring out why Dancing With The Stars doesn't seem to have any actual stars on the show.

Smallville (during season 1)
Survivor (gave up after season 3)
Ugly Betty (after one episode)

I'm in the process of giving up ER - I told DH that I'll only watch it "live" from now on. If it gets recorded, he can watch it without me. I would give up Prison Break, but DH is still too into it.

Give Ugly Betty another try. I think it is really cute...

I think I've completely given up on Passions. It was always strange, but the storylines are getting so old and boring.

Me too. I stopped TIVOing this last year even though I had watched it from the very first episode. It was just too much and they dragged stories on for waaaay to long - even longer than a normal soap opera.

I did watch about half of the second episode, actually, just because I was recording "The Office" and "Earl" to watch later with DH. It seemed to have the exact same plot as the pilot: Betty gets tormented by pretty girls, has work crisis exacerbated by wacko family/neighbors, receives support from Scottish wardrobe lady, bands together with boss at last minute to overcome evil machinations of Vanessa Williams, makes overly sincere speech about perserverance and remaining true to oneself. Am I missing anything? :)

I thought I was going to be the only person to say Lost... although there are still very few. How can everyone possibly give up so much time to watching approximately 4 minutes of actual new storyline each week? Argh. Drove me batty.

No you are definitely NOT the only one that is for sure! Count me in. This show seriously has pissed me off! I am so mad at myself for wasting so much time. I have no idea what direction this show is going in and frankly there is no ending that could ever change my mind.

24

It seems every episodes just drags. It's the same thing over and over. It can never hold my attention...and especially not for 24 episodes.

Law & Order - when Dennis Farina came on. I just wasn't feeling it.

I missed a lot of episodes when Dennis Farina was on. I just couldn't connect with him. Dennis Farina is a fine actor. I just think bringing in another older, jaded detective right after "Lennie" left was a bad move. No one can replace "Lennie."

I have started watching again this season, though. Dennis was replaced by the actress who played ADA Rossi on Conviction. And there is a new ADA paired with McCoy. It's been pretty good so far.
