Hi,
We just found out that our 4 year old daughter has astigmatism in both eyes and will need to wear glasses.
I was wondering if there were any suggestions from other moms to help her get used to wearing them? Also, if your child has glasses, have they been teased at all? If so, how did you address that situation with your child?
This is all new to me, so any suggestions, comments or advice would be welcome and greatly appreciated! TIA! :)

My DS had to start wearing glasses when he was 2 1/2. He is now 4yrs old. At first it was a real struggle to get him to wear them. He would constantly take them off and we just had to keep putting them back on. He would throw them and we would just keep putting them back on. He scratched the lenses and bent the frames from so much abuse the first 6months or so, but after that he just got used to them. He now puts them on every morning when he wakes up and doesn't even want to take them off at night to go to bed sometimes. His older brother had to start wearing glasses around the same time so that helped too. He has not been teased at all. Glasses are much more common today then they used to be in children.

I would just be really consistant with putting them back on everytime she takes them off. At 4 years old, she could probably help with picking out a frame that she likes which might make her more likely to wear them.

Hey, I don't have kids, but saw your thread in New Posts -- I started wearing glasses when I was 6. I got them during the summer between Kindergarten and 1st grade, and I remember that my mom found a couple books for me about kids with glasses and name calling. When we got back to school in the fall, one kid called me four eyes, but that was in the book, so it didn't bother me. Maybe you can find some age-appropriate books for your DD? My memories are pretty fuzzy, but I do remember being so happy I could see that it wasn't an issue to get me to keep them on. :)

My 4 yo wears glasses she was never teased when she wore them , most kids like wearing them because they can see. and if your dd can help pick out her frames let her. it doesn't matter if they are green with orange polka dots because they'll like their glasses, and really that's what matters.

Neither of my kids wear glasses either but I too started wearing them at a very young age. I actually had bifocals when I was 5!

My parents helped by getting me some pink pretty frames. Then they got my grandmother and other family members to wear fake glasses...like ones with just clear glass instead of a perscription. Since I wanted to be just like the older people in my family I started to wear them and when I saw that I could see pictures and things better I wouldn't take them off. My eyesight imroved dramatically through the years and now I am able to wear contacts. :D
