How short do you want to go, and what do you have now?

Right now my hair is about 5-6 inches past my shoulders with some layering.
I'd like to go chin to shoulder length, but my hair is thick and naturally wavy so it's hard to find a style that will work.

I'm growing mine out again after getting the post wedding chop... it was a biiiig chop too... at the wedding, my hair was half-way between my shoulders and my butt and I got it cut to my chin... but now I'm letting it grow out and it's past my shoulders now but still nowhere near as long as it was...
I really love the last pic in the first post... awesome! wish I could pull that haircut off but it'd make my face look huge...

This is how I have my hair cut right now, it's so easy to take care of and style. Looks great when it grows out, too. My hair's getting a little longer now, and I'm debating whether to keep going or cut it again.

Mine is really curly and I wear it up mainly. If it is down, it is clipped in someway. I did a BIG post wedding chop (PWC). My hair was mid back and I took it between my shoulders/chin and that was the shortest it has EVER been. I am growing it back out and I almost have it back where it was. I am bland. I cant' do straight cut because I look like a christmas tree. I have small layers.

My hair is currently 5-6 inches past my shoulders with 2 sets of layers about 1/2 inch and 1 inch from the bottom lenght. I have an appointment next Wednesday - the whole 9 yards - cut, foil, pedi, eyebrow wax.
Show me so fun hair that's between the chin and shoulders girls...please!

I've had so many hair issues, I got a great two-layer cut and the same stylist can't replicate it for some reason.
I'm bored and thinking of chopping it off. I need to do something to distract myself because I know short hair on me looks evil. I want to try a really heavily layered cut with sideswept long bangs, like what Monica wore on Season 7 of friends.
Off to find a picture...

My hair is like just like Gwyneth Paltrow's above in texture (between wavy and curly). In color, it's reddish brown. I wear it parted to the side. I straighten it once in a blue moon. Mostly I love my hair, but some days I see girls with cute, choppy, layered straight hair and I covet it! Then I think about how early I'd have to wake up to do that every day, and realize how much I prefer sleep! :)
Edited to add: Duh, I forgot the second part of the post! Can you ladies think of any fast and simple things to do to my hair, based on the above description? Thanks!

I have super, duper curly hair, but am simply too lazy to straighten it every morning.
So this is my hair cut (sans the depressed expression):

i have very straight thick mop on my head. its about three inches past my shoulders. i normally wear it up in a ponytail or a messy bun looking thing. i'm too lazy to do anything else with it. it doesn't help that my hair doens't told curl at all. and when i say at all i mean it. when i was younger i got the famous perm. after we washed my hair a few days later u barely had curl on the ends. the perm lasted maybe 2 weeks.

Well, I pretty much have this cut (posted on the first page):
http://hairstyles.free-beauty-tips.com/images/mid3.jpg
except my hair has some natural curl to it. The layers really allow the curls to come out. It's so easy to manage now - I just towel dry and put in some mousse, and use my fingers to separate the curls. It's the best cut I've had in a long time. I'm thinking of doing some long, sideswept bangs, though. The pieces of hair around my face tend to do strange things (probably because I'm always pushing it behind my ears).

I have curly hair and I am so bored with it. It's just past my shoulders and I'd like to grow it out, but in the meantime I tend to stick it in a ponytail and just go. For you girls out there with curly hair, what products do you use and how do you use them? I run hair gel through my hair & an Anti-Frizz cream (Dove). Any tips on defining your curls?

Nobody has responded to my first question yet, but I have another. I am dying to find a way to have my curls look like Sarah Jessica Parker's on SATC. Here are a few pics:

Any ideas how to do this? I know her hair is naturally curly, so they must do soemthing to the curls to achieve this look. But what?
TIA!

Jessica Parker does have amazing hair, I would like to have hair like hers as well.
I'm willing to bet you need to use a large barrel curling iron.
Could be wrong.
You should take the picture to your hair salon next time you get your hair cut, and ask. ;)

Lauren- I have hair that is just past the shoulders & curly too. I almost always straighten it, but some days I like to wear it curly. When I do wear it curly, I start with Bumble & Bumble Styling Cream mixed with Bumble & Bumble Defrizz. I scrunch it a lot using a dry towel and then I keep adding a little more styling creme after each time I scrunch it with the towel. I don't know why, but it helps my curls stay more defined by doing it this way. Also, I try to seperate the curls and make sure they are "coated" with the hair products first. Then, before I blowdry it with a diffuser, I spray my hair with L'Oreal Curl Vive Spray Gel and scrunch it in one more time. As my hair is drying with the diffuser, I spray on some lightweight hairspray (like Pantene Pro-V Flexible Hairspray) and keep scrunching and seperating the curls. To get my hair like SJP by following all of those steps and once it's dry I let it sit for about 30 minutes (the time it takes to put on make-up, figure out what I am going to wear and iron it). I then use a medium/large barreled curling iron and loosely wrap each curl around the iron starting at the root and working my hair thorough the iron down to the ends. After I have curled everything, I spray my hair with hairspray and let it dry for a few seconds. Then I seperate the curls and spray it one last time. I hope that make some sense. I know that it seems like a lot of steps but it doesn't take too long once you get the routine down!

Question! I am looking to change my hair color pretty drastically before I go abroad for a few months...Right now my hair is dirty blonde, with some natural highlights and lowlights, and is just above my shoulders in a cut I really like. I am thinking of doing something a bit daring-- having the undersection dyed brown, with blonde sections on top (think: Christina Aguilera, but not skanky, and not black/platinum)...
I'm going to a stylist I trust, but I'm having a hard time finding a pic of this online...Can any of yall suggest where I might find one?
Thanks so much! (my appointment is next week!)

Ok I really need some help. I've been trying to look for a new style but it's storming here and the internet is being so slow!
So, I have long hair. Goes to right below my bra strap. It has long layers. I part it on the side.
My husband likes it long so i'll keep it that way for now. But I'm looking for something different. It's looked this way FOREVER! I like the side swept bang thing but I'm not positive.
Can anyone please help with suggestions?!

Okay, I need your help ladies!!!
I am getting my hair cut on Thursday, and I have no idea what to do. My hair has a very fine/slick texture but is VERY thick. It is shoulder length. Currently it's a cherry color.
I need something very easy to maintain, but that I can still do something funky with when I get dressed up.
I would love to get something pretty short, but my face is kinda round. I'm not sure how that would go over with my face shape. Here is a recent pic (right after I colored it last week):

Oh, I like that last one, tgr. I would think carefully about how you feel having hair in your face. If you are anything like me, when I have long hair like yours I tend to keep it behind my ears and you can't do that with side-swept bangs. I had a cut like some of the other pics you posted and hated the way the bangs were always in my face. Just think about it before you get bangs cut because there's a long awkward stage associated with growing them back out!

Thanks!
I tend to keep mine pulled back in a bun because the back of my neck gets so hot in the summer. DH hates that I always wear it that way all the time, though, which is part of the reason I'm wanting to find something shorter.

tgr68 - I think your hair would probably be too thick/heavy for the first one, unless you are planning on spending a lot of time on your hair. The second one I love, but yours won't look exactly like that because the model has paper thin hair and not much of it. Also to get it parted like that, she probably used a half can of hairspray and prayed the wind didn't blow before the picture was taken.:p But, you could get a similar look by not having it parted so deeply. She also has a lot of layers, which would help cut down on the thickness of your hair. I would ask to have it cut with a razor if you decided on that one. The 3rd and 4th are very similar to the 2nd, only less layers and a little shorter. The 5th one would work for you as well, except yours won't look that sleek w/out a lot of product/time.

Does anybody have any short styles for thick straight hair?

I think they would look great with your face shape and look fairly easy to maintain and dress up!I have a very round face and have had pretty much both of these cuts. They look great if you spend a lot of time blow drying your hair and use product. If you let your hair air dry, not so much. Sometimes people think short hair will be so much simpler, but the fact of the matter is, you end up having to spend more time on it to make it look nice.
Tgr - I have really thick straight hair and I've had this cut:
http://www.bosshair.com/images/gallery/short/lg/49.jpg
My stylist thinned it out a lot to take out the bulk or I would have had mushroom head. She used a razor AND these shears that looked like what a comb would if you'd snapped off every other tooth. She went up pretty close to my head with those to take the bulk out everwhere not just the ends. (The only thing bad that did is gave me some flyaways but I just sprayed some hairspray and was off)
Anyway... it was a great cut and I loved it!!!! Would totally do it again when I'm tired of my long locks.

I had my hair cut pretty short and the last time I went to my hair guy, he suggested I grow it out and cut it into long layers with a side sweep bang, which I did. I loved it and plan to get my hair cut like that again, but I also love the hairstyle below...which I saw last night on Pepper Dennis. Is that basically what I am already getting, except her hair is longer??

I've seen lots of hairSTYLES, but not much hairCOLOR in here...and I need some help!
I'm thinking of coloring my hair, I want to to light on top with dark underneath, but I'm having the WORST time finding any pics. :( I have done so much to my hair over the past 8 months. The last thing was a major chop (think waist to chin) and while I loved the new short 'do, it's growing out (I *miss* the length) and I'm bored with it...again. It's almost to my shoulders and dark brown. I don't know if I should go with, say, 3 sections of highlights(top to bottom) or 3 sections of all over color. Is this even making any sense?? :o Anyway...PLEASE PLEASE post some FUNKY hair color pics! If any of you can find some, I'm having NO luck. TIA!!!

I am going to get my hair cut this afternoon and I can't wait. I have thick, short, curly blonde hair with red/brown low-lights. It's short in the back with long bangs. I usually blow it out in the back and flip it. I think it's time for a change now that I am a new mom and will be heading back to work next month.

A misconception about perms - the type/amount/size of curl has absolutely nothing to do with how long the solution is left on. The size of the perm rod and how it is wrapped determines what the curl will look like. The smaller the rod and am't of hair on it, the smaller and tighter the curl. I would probably do a collision wrap with medium to large sized rods.

FYI - booksie, I call BS on your stylist. My SIL owns a salon and does all my color and she has had that color hair. Her original hair color is dark brown. I don't know why your stylist is telling you it's not really possible unless she just doesn't want to do it....unless your hair is black and doesn't take color easily. I know my SIL would do it in a minute!! She loves funky color. The picture could very well have hair pieces attached to the model's hair, but that is NOT the only way to get it to look like that.

I need a new hairstyle in a bad way. For the most part, I've had the same style for years. I've changed it a few times but I never maintain and it just all grows aout again.
Does anyone have any sugguestions for someone with collorbone length- curly on the sides and back, and straight in the top hair?

It is. Any salon that uses matrix color should have it. Your stylist probably doesn't use matrix color. In some lines may not be possible. And no the model doesn't have hair pieces in. I've attended several coloring classes and Matrix always gives stylists the formula to do it themselves. It's probably in the add flyer the stylist gets. One thing to be wary of, RedLights has bleach in it so when the red washes out, it will probably turn pink for a little while before completely fading out.
chadandliz can you tell me what is a collision wrap?
It's a relatively new way (at least to me) to wrap a perm. You have to use a perm rods specifically for collision wraps, so not all salons can do it. It's kinda hard to explain over the net, but you wrap the hair around the rods so that the rods go "towards" each other, or collide, hence the name collision wrap. With a regular perm, you do the first one and roll it back towards the neck, the do the next one right behind it towards the nape, etc. The collision wrap IMO looks more natural. A friend of mine had it done, but has since grown in out, I'll have to see if she has any pics of herself with it.
nic I'm a little confused by your post, are you wanting to style your hair curly most of the time or straight?
ChadandLiz, I don't have a straight or curly preference, although curly is usually easier. I was trying to give an idea of what type of hair I have. It's a combo of straight and curly, weird, I know.

If you have somewhat thick hair -

This one looks like it's pinned up in the back, which is really easy to do for a different look. For the front you could easily use a curling iron for any straight pieces.

tx sweetheart - your forehead is somewhat more narrow than your jaw/chin area, so you want to avoid a lot of bulk around your jaw area, otherwise it will just exaggerate it. If you add more volume/bulk towards the top of your head by bangs and more volume on top, it would help even it out.

I agree with the others, bangs are a wise choice. Personally, I'm a fan of long, sideswept bangs as they're a bit more sophisticated than the blunt, straight across bangs many of us had as children. IMHO, only supermodels like Heidi Klum can get away with that look.

I agree - or Jennifer Love Hewitt. Whenever I turn on the Ghost Whisperer, DH is convinced she's trying to do a child seduction thing. It freaks him out. That, and she spends half the damn show in her nightie.
whoops! hijack!
TxSweetheart, another suggestion would be if you can find a cut that will work well with a big round brush - those are good for adding lots of volume. It can be a PITA to blowdry, but makes a huge difference. I have a square jaw as well, and it has helped the overall shape.

This one you would need to blow dry straight or use a flat iron on it to get the look

We're celebrating my birthday with all my friends Saturday night and I'm considering getting a haircut Saturday morning as sort of a pre-birthday makeover. My hair is very thick and just slightly wavy, and it is currently falling to my shoulder blades. It's medium brown in color. I'm really bad at getting my hair cut regularly. I usually grow my hair out until it's so long that I can't stand it, then I get it cut again. It's always the same, chin length blunt cut that I get and I'm so tired of doing the long-then-short-then-long-then-short thing. I want a cut with some style to it, but I also need something that doesn't require a lot of work. Something I can just brush a little bit and it all falls into place.
So I was thinking that I could probably pull off Rachael Ray's haircut. My hair is the right length for it, and I like that it's long, yet it still has some style to it. I like her highlights too. See below:
http://www.rachael-ray.org/gallery/albums/miscother/normal_afterregkelly006.jpg

I really like Rachel's cut. It can be hard to find a long cut that still has style to it. For the highlights, make sure you bring in a pic so they know exactly what you are talking about. To me they're somewhere in between fine and chunky but everybody's definition of fine/cunky is different.
All this talking about hair cutting has finally convinced me to cut mine. It's just past my shoulders and really fried:o I permed it last May and it did alright considering until I had my dd and started losing hair by the handfulls. I'm going to cut it to my hairline in the back and stacked (really layered) and slightly longer in the front with not as many layers. I couldn't find a picture of it. I'll post a before and after tho if it turns out well.

I'm getting a cut on Wednesday (7th) I'm looking at adding LOTS more layers and maybe some longer side swept bangs? (I think I want it pretty choppy) I'm trying to find a pic and I can't find one. I know I've seen the style that I want on Brooke Burke before but now I can't find the picture. I remember it was in one of the celebrity gossip threads from way back. This is what cut I have now.

beevo12 -- I have a similar face shape/structure and cut sideswept bangs about a year and a half ago (I specifucally asked for bangs like JA :o ). I think AS's bangs in that pic are a bit to "heavy" for my tastes -- the side-swept thing works well for me. Anyway, I love how it looks and I've received plenty of compliments. So I say do it!!!
beevo, I think a cut like Jennifer Aniston's would look great on you. I'm not crazy about the bangs on AS.
p.s.- what a cute little guy you have!

Maybe you girls could help me out a little. I've been growing my hair out for my wedding so that I can have "wedding hair," but I know that as soon as we're back from the honeymoon I want to get it cut short. The shortest I've had lately has been a chin-length layered bob. This was last year before I began the growing out process. I'm thinking I want to go shorter this time around. Not Winona Ryder short though. I'm having trouble deciding what I want. I do know that I really can't stand hair in my eyes, so no side-swept bangs for this girl! :p My hair is straight and fine, but but not thin at all, and I have a round face. What would look good and be easy?

I have a graduated bob as well. (I'll try to post pics later today, I forgot to do that when I got it cut) It's cut to my hairline in the back and is about chin length or a little shorter in the front with lots of layers. It's really easy to style too.

I've been growing my hair out forever and it's finally the length I want... Almost to my bra strap. But, I look like a 12 year old!! I'm going next week for a cut - any ideas for great cuts to keep the long length and add some great style?

How do bangs work on a round face with a very small forehead? I just saw "The Devil Wears Prada" and I loved Anne Hathaway's bangs. I know I couldn't wear them in the really blunt way she styled them in a few scenes, but I like the sideswept.
I have to watch the length, too, because I can't have hair in my eyes. I haven't had bangs since that early 90's half up/half down phenomenon!!! :o
So is it possible to get bangs that won't be in my eyes, and will look good on a pretty round face even though I have a small forehead?

No bang help? Anyone?

In short, no. If you have a small forehead and a round face, bangs probably aren't going to be great for you. And if you want to do the side-swept look, then they're going to have to be long enough that they'll end up in your eyes.
Maybe you could post a photo of yourself and we could see if your face is really as round as you think it is and your forehead is as small you think it is. People often have a totally distorted view of their face shape. I know I still can't figure out what mine is! Is is oval? Is it square? I just don't know. :o

I'm looking for something new. I have long (past my shoulder blades), thick, straight hair. My face is round. I have lots of cowlicks at my hairline, so regular bangs are a pain. I don't have the patience to spend a lot of time styling my hair every day.
I'm going back and forth between chopping off a few inches and getting long layers, and going chin-length.
I like this picture of Nicole Richie's hair that was posted a few pages back. It looks simple, but I wonder how hard would it actually be to style...

Well great minds must think alike because i just came looking for this thread to bump up!
Sorry i wont be much help with your hair since i have my own hair confusion at the moment. However, i will say that when cut right my hair will fall naturally in the back like that 2nd picture. I think it's in the cut not the style (if that makes sense)
I am getting my hair cut tomorrow. I don't have thick or thin hair so it's somewhere in the middle. I have bangs and LOVE them so i want to keep them. If not blown dry i have very slightly wavy hair that can be helped along if i want a body wave (it usually takes too much time so i don't do it often). The second i run a brush through my hair it more or less goes straight. I usually blow dry it but am sick of spending 20 minutes to get the job done. It's currently down near my bra strap so my options are pretty much endless. I NEED IDEAS!! I'm totally over the wispy layer look but i could climb on board with chunkier layers. I don't want anything that takes too long to style but i'm not against taking a hot iron to it real quick after i dry it.
I'm on the left, though sadly i have to admit i am a little chunkier now that i'm 7 months pg!

I think that bangs would work nicely with your face. But are you willing to keep up with them? I know that whenever I've done it, it never lasts because I just don't want to deal with getting them trimmed all the time.
Have you considered a graduated bob? I think that might work nicely with your face.

Really? You think? The shortest I've ever gone with my hair is chin-length. I feel like shorter hair makes my face looks longer. I am not opposed to trying something new though!
I am a little worried about going too short for 3 reasons: 1) My son LOVES to eat my hair. It's been an ongoing obsession since he was about 5 months old 2) I'm not sure how I will put it up in a ponytail when I'm working out and 3) It's hard to tell in the picture I posted, but I have relatively curly/wavy hair.
But still considering the graduated bob...

Curly/wavy hair-unless you want to be straightening it everytime, then I wouldnt' go TOO short. My hair is curly, and i straighten it 2 times a week (when I wash it). Having a baby now, it makes it that much harder!!

Wrighty,
I think you could do bangs EASILY! Long sideswept (like Jennifer Aniston's or Kate Beckinsdale on the previous page) are easy to grow back out if you end up hating them or your son decides to yank them. ;)
AndreaMMS,
Is your hair already in choppy layers? I really like the style you have. I'm a big fan of trying long layers as a change. Again, easy to grow out.

ITA with Standrea, I also have wavy hair and I got a layered cut that looks good wavy or straight, it's about shoulder length and has long bangs that I can tuck behind my ear or when I blow it dry I wear them sort of draping to the side.

Yeah, I'm thinking about changing it. But I think I'm just going to get it colored for right now. I kinda like the length it is now. I really miss my long hair though. I've had this hair style for forever. Seriously my old friends from high school over ten years ago see me and tell me I look exactly the same (except I know I've gained weight but this is about my hair ;) ) I'd really like to try the bangs. I'm just wondering how long it would take to "train" them to lay flat since my hair is so used to being combed back. Also do you think that bangs would look good on me? My hair is naturally straight. My actual hairs are thin but I have a lot of them so that it feels like my hair is pretty thick. I do very little styling of my hair now, but I won't mind spending a few minutes on my bangs in the morning if needed.
I'm just ready for something different but I'm afraid to go to short. I think it would make my face look fatter. Also I don't have a lot of time to style it to look right.
TIA!

I think bangs like those would look fine on you :) I grew up with bangs and keep thinking about going back, but DH is against the idea :(
Anyway, if you have them cut, have the hairdresser cut them a little longer than you want them to be after they are dry (learned this the hard way!). To style them, you'll need a big, round hair brush. Don't get the small round ones or you'll have more round bangs.
Roll the brush under the bangs and blow them dry, but while you are drying pull the brush away from your face to dry the bangs straight, instead of just drying them around the brush. Let the ends curl around the end of the brush just slightly to dry them. It takes less than 5 minutes.

I'd like some some help with picture ideas...
I currently have lightly layered medium-length hair. It's just a little shorter than my bra strap. I'm looking to go about three inches shorter and make the layers heavier. Right now the bulk of my hair is the longest layer, and I want to even it out among all the lengths of layers. I wear it either straight-ish (blowdried) or poker straight (flat ironed).
My issue is, I don't want to end up looking like a news anchor, and when I describe this style, that's pretty much what it sounds like. Any ideas?

chrisnjen- I've had bangs for years and years b/c i have a long forehead... it looks like you kind of do too. (that's not meant to be offensive so i hope i don't offend you) I think bangs look best on people with longer foreheads. My hair stylist says that it's easier to get away with longer or shorter bangs because there's room for error.
As far as drying them... i use a regular old hair brush and brush out my hair then i flip it over so it's not one big blob of hair. Then i use the same hair brush and a blow dryer and i dry my bangs first combing them forward and to the side. I never liked the look the round brush gave them and preferred them more flat. After i dry all my hair i come back and tease the root of my bangs and then lightly comb them back out so they aren't poofy.
Anyone seen pictures of a hair style where the front is longer than the back but it's not gradual? I saw someone at a store the other day that had just a big chunk of the front longer, maybe 2 inches, than the back but it wasn't a gradual swing or anything. It was kind of edgy.

I was actually thinking of a sideswept bang before I saw this Reese pic. Do you have any pictures you can post with a sideswept bang with straight hair. I had a hard time finding them. Thanks for the color comment. I'm not sure if I would go that light since it would be a lot of upkeep but I am going to get super blonde highlights so my hair will look a lot lighter overall. I love the look of the contrast between the dark and light hair.

Thanks! To bad DH is against bangs. Mine doesn't really care what I do as long as my hair doesn't get to short. Although I have noticed that he tends to like my hair lighter in color. Right now it's pretty much natural because I haven't colored it since the wedding 1 1/2 years ago.

I need some help!!
I just had a baby and I would like a hairstyle that is easy and quick for when I go back to work. I like my length (just below the shoulders), but I'm thinking maybe a body wave and light highlights might add some "umph" to my dull look. My hair is naturally very straight, fine and silky. Right now, I have to either straighten or hot roll my hair to have it look decent. Here is a pic, I included the 2nd one so you could see my hair color: (this look requires blow drying and hot rolling)

Anyone have suggestions or pictures? Any experiences with body waves, good or bad?

PrincessCJ81 - I think even some partial highlights would look great with your skin tone. Really brighten you up for the spring! I think you should go for the highlights and then see how you feel about a body wave. I have no experience with body waves, so I can't say anything about them.
Just as I told Chris~n~Jen, maybe you should get some layers framing your face!
And your pictures are so great!

Ok, you guys have talked me into the sideswept bangs. Now I just need to ask around for recommendations for a good stylist. I haven't found one that I love yet.
I'm going out of town this weekend so the earliest will be next week. I'll be sure to come post my after pics when I'm done.
May27JnJ ~ Love the new hair. The highlights are so pretty.

Great! I can't wait to see pictures! Just ask a co-worker or a friend. That's how I found where I go to. My BFF goes there too!
Thanks! I love my hair. It's growing on my more and more. I'll have to take a new picture and delete the above. BLAH!

I need some help!!
Anyone have suggestions or pictures? Any experiences with body waves, good or bad?
I had a body wave done back in September and I like it. I have bounce and more body than my normal stick, straight hair.
A lot of times, I will just wear it with the waves and not straighten it. I like having options now and my hair seems to have a little more texture.
I just tried to find a picture that really shows the waves. The closest is this -

I really like your natural brown hair color :) But this is also coming from me that's had highlights and it's a PITA to try to go back to natural.

Ditto this. I just got highlights again (after saying last year that I wasn't going to do it again), and I think that I'm already regretting them. Oh, and (prehighlight) my hair color is very similar to yours...

A month ago I chopped off my "boob-length" hair to a shoulder length bob. Also I had some bright red chunks put in. My hair is naturally curly but I straighten it half of the time. I like to change my look up every year or so.

I love your natural color. And I would stay away from hilights with a new baby personally. I wish I had. I have a 14 month old and the color of my hair looks terrible because I can never get to the salon.
I think you look fantastic!!
OMG emmasart I ADORE your hair. The color, the cut everything, it looks amazing on you!

Emmasart, I have been looking for a new do and you have inspired me!! I do not think bright red would look too great on me. I have been dying my hair black for a while now. I have been thinking about blue streaks but was not sure how to do them. I think I will do blonde and black first and then if I feel like going blue, I will! Question, I do not want to get a very short cut, do you think it would work with longer hair to?? I also have naturaly wavy hair. Would layers look good on me?

Thanks May27JnJ, LINZnWILL and BlackMagicRose! It was a little scary to get so much hair chopped of after having long hair for a couple of years now, but I was really pleased with how it turned out.

I love black and blue hair! that will look super cute. I've been scared to do it blue because I did it once and it faded green but there is a bigger and better selection out there now.
Re: bleaching long black hair: One of the reasons that that I cut so much hair off is because I dye my hair a lot too, and bleaching it to the really light shade that I that I would need for the red would have totally fried my hair and made it crispy. So we cut off a bunch which left hair that had been processed less that 18 times :)
Another thing I might warn you about is that going from black to bleached is really difficult to get even. Although since its going to be covered by color again it might clean up some unevenness. I might see if I could have a professional handle it... I went to a colorist to have the initial bleaching and dying done, but I've been touching up the red (special FX) at home... Currently the red part is now violet. I think if your hair was short I'd tell you to go ahead and try the bleaching yourself since its easier to clean up "oopsies" but with long hair I don't trust myself to do it anymore. But thats just me. I can be a real klutz. :)
Personally, I like layers with bright chunks of color, because the color will peak out in more places.
Good luck and let us know what you end up doing! :)

Thanks so much for the advice. I am NOT going to do this on my own. I will get a professional to do it. Tomorrow I am going to get a cut and may get it dyed black there or do it at home, not sure yet. I will ask about the big chunks of color. I may ask if they have hair strands. I always wanted the black on white look, but would only do this with hair strands. It would be a cool way to try it out and it would not be permanent. I would so love some golden blonde or blue. Oh, by the way. I have a lip ring to. :p we seem to have a similar style.

I need help with pictures. I'm not even 100% sure what I want. Right now I have hair a 3-4 inches past my shoulders.
I have very thick hair that's naturally wavy/curly. I straighten it a lot or put it up when I don't have time to straighten. I have 2 little kids and work in a casual environment so I'd like something sophisticated and sexy but also easy.
Please post pics. I'm hoping for a new 'do in a few days. TIA!

I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow at 11am. I've never been to this stylist since I just moved to this area and I'm a tad nervous. I'm going to a very reputable salon so hopefully it works out for me. The picture below is sort of what I'm leaning towards (the cut not color)...maybe just a little longer. Wish me luck!

Foley - I can't wait to see it! I love that cut! I want a cut like that but my face is too chubby. :D
ok, So a very dear friend of mine just finished hair school and I have agreed to let her cut my hair this Saturday!
My hair is pretty long right now and I am chopping it all off. This friend who is cutting had cancer our freshman year of high school, ever since I always grow my hair our, cut, and donate it. I think it is kind cool that this time she will be the one cutting it! :)
I am a little reluctant to cut it all off but I am just sick of it, it is really unhealthy and it is so heavy, it never holds a curl and I just end up putting it in a ponytail everyday. Plus with Vegas summers I need a short cut.
Here is my hair now, sorry the pics are fuzzy and my hand totally looks deformed there, don't know what was going with that.

I want something fun and functional that doesn't take a lot of time. I have thick hair and a lot of it. All my hair dressers tell me I have a lot of hair, whatever that means. I am not a morning person and need something that can be easily put together in the morning. Any ideas? and what do you think of the ones I posted? TIA!

I think any of those would be relatively low maintenance. I like the Julia Stiles pics the best.
Linz--i hear he same thing about my hair, and i've had both the first cut AND the scrubs one. Both worked well, but it's hard to get enough texture. Really hard. Lots of scary razoring!
Thanks Toonces and mkvh. Now I am getting my hair done tomorrow. I am leaning towards the Julie Stiles cut but I am sure I will be happy with whatever I get. My hair grows really fast so I am not too worried. Wish me luck!

Linz: LOVE IT! How many inches were cut off? Are you going to donate it?
Thanks Lindsay. I cut about 10 - 11 inches off and yes I am donating it. It's actually a cool story. A very good friend of mine had cancer our freshman year of high school, ever since she was diagnosed I have grown my hair out, cut and donated it. She is now in remission and is pregnant with her first child (I am actually throwing her baby shower for her tomorrow) She just finished hair school and I thought it would be cool to have her cut it this time :)

I went in for a color. The last time I had my colorist do my hair brown and red... After it faded, I put some purple Special FX in, which was nice for a while. Eventually my roots grew out too much, so I went in for a touch up, and had my colorist put in some hot pink.... Its kinda hard to tell the color difference in these photos, but its actually a hot pink/fushia in person.
Last time she did my hair (in early march):

I got my hair cut and colored this week and I had to show it off somewhere. :) It was inspired by the Julia Stiles cut that's made a few appearances through the thread, but it's obviously a little different. I have SUPER thick hair, but after it was thinned and cut, I have more volume than I've ever had!

I need help, ladies!
I am in need of a new hairstyle. My hair has grown out and now I am bored with my hair, again. I had it in an a-line bob for awhile and my stylist thought we would try all one length with side swepped bangs so we cut it that way a few months ago (needless to say it grew out), but I am kinda wanting something more funky. It's been a rough few months so the change would definitely help.
