For those of you with this cut, can you still pull your hair back? Not sure I fully understand the graduated bob, is it totally layered / stacked in the back? My stylist is great so I know she'll help me out, but my appointment isn't until next week and I'm trying to figure out what I want. My issue is that I need to be able to pull it back... not sure if I should just get over that and cut it short OR keep the length and maybe just have it angled so that it's shorter in the back? there are so many cute styles in this thread for short hair, I'm getting really tempted!!
Thanks :)
may27 that's a great cut, love the color too and I'm sure it will look really good on you! good luck!!
ez2luv I think side-swept bangs would look great on you and if you want to keep the length, it's a change without going too drastic. Or are you looking to cut it short?
ez2luv
08-01-2007, 09:59 AM
? I had it short once and hated it.
I think it's a security thing - plus my hair takes FOREVER to grow!
I had layers once, but it's so straight and pokey - it looked like frizz all the time (and I tried soooo many products!! - no help!)
??
I"ll post another thread on this, don't want to take over this thread.....

I wish I had found this thread earlier. It is alittle late to seek advice since I am going for a cut and color in 3 hours but...
I have not cut or colored my hair in well over 2 years. It is currently at the middle of my back and I plan to donate to locks for love. My hair is very very thick and coarse. It is a chestnut brown with gray "highlights" at the top and a warm redish color at the bottom, from the last time it was colored with highlights. It is very wavy, when not weighted down, but not curly. I am very very very lazy when it comes to doing my hair. I wash it 2x a week and blow dry it without product or a brush, then brush it out and, as of late, pull it back into a pony tail. I have a 3yr old son, am TTC a 2nd child, and work full time at a job where I need to look very professional and in control (sort of a judge). I have shoulder issues which often make it anywhere from uncomfortable to impossible to lift my arm over my head to do anything with a hair brush on the top of my head. I do expect I will be back to a hair stylist sooner then 2-3 years, but 2-3x a year has been my norm, not every 6 weeks. I have fair to medum skin tone, eyes the waiver between green and blue. I would call my face shape oval. I tend to look best in hair that is between chin and shoulder length. I do not have a night life. I will be 43 in a few weeks. I have nice figure. I am 5" 2", weight in at 124, but I would like to lose a few pound if I don't get pg. I am small boned and wear anywhere from size 2 to size 6. I can't think of any other info that might help but feel free to ask.
Oh, and I am going to a new unknown stylist since mine has moved on in the past 2 years. It is a high end salon.
Any suggestions????

May27JnJ - I am a dunce with anything hair related so excuse me if this is a stupid question but don't those styles require either straight hair or being blown straight? I also would probably have an issue with hair in my face all the time at work. I can't be brushing the hair out of my face while questioning parties.

What color are you trying to go for? Do you have any idea of what you want?
Renrel
08-01-2007, 11:54 AM
Colorwise I usually go for something in the auburn family, dark red/warm brown. I love the look of short hair, around the chin/shoulders with fairly tight curls, but I don't have the curls. I don't know if there is a style for wavy hair that would achieve a similiar feel. I tend to go with something layered and angled out of my face, with the waves giving it alot of body. For what it is worth, DH hates the texture of hair. He does not like the severe look of it tied back but likewise hates when it "attacks" him. He speaks of it as if it were a seperate entity from me. He also however does not like the picture of me the one time I had it cut really short, though I think it looked pretty good.

Renrel: I have curly hair, so it's a little different from yours, but I had mine cut like this a few weeks ago:

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/laurenballew/ep70_carrie_bluehoodie_bookstore.jpg
I think it would work well with wavy hair, too. It's very easy to just wash, apply some product, and go. If I want to take the time I can still pretty quickly straighten it or really define the curls.

I love that look on others. It may look great on me but I will probably think it just looks messy when I look in the mirror. I will discuss it with my styist though. It is in the range of a look I would like and be comfortable with I think.

Hey ladies, just a reminder (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30825)...
Please do not quote pictures. Doing so can eat up the bandwith for the person that is hosting the image you see, and it eats up huge chunks of the viewing page.
Thank you! :)

I used to have a graduated bob, and it was very short in the back. Definitely couldn't have put it in a ponytail, but I was able to pull the front back out of my face for going to the gym and stuff.

Well I did it. 10 inches off. I am not sure yet if I like it. It feels light and sexy but when I look in the mirror I am not yet happy. Have to wait to see if I really don't like it or if I need to get used to a very different look. It is between chin and shoulder length now, layered and my chestnut brown with a lot of red highlights. It is not curling at all, even with the curl definer stuff and the stylist twisting bits while she dryed it with a difuser. I think maybe she misunderstood what I meant when I said my hair gets wavy, and was thinking soft curls not soft waves. I would like it better if it curled at least a little. DH however does like it. I will see what reaction I get a work today and from my family this weekend. And there is also what it looks like when I do it myself. Thanks for all the advice. I do appreciate it.

Does anyone with a similar cut have any fun and easy styling tips? I always do things so "plain" and would like to be a little bit more fun with it but I don't even know where to start!
I would like to get some highlights as well, which I have never had before. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as color?

Any recommendations for product to stimulate/activate curls? I remember having something years ago but I forget who made it. I found something today by bedhead called uptight, which I have not tried yet. I saw a tone of smoothing, straightening products at the store but this was the only one for activating curls. I saw a few curl defiiners, and I bought the one the stylist ysed on me but since I did not have/generate curls it did not seem to do much. There was nothing to define.

michellerenee your new do looks awesome!! I love it :) and what a cute little guy you're wearing there ;)
not sure about highlights / color unless you're ready for the constant & pricey upkeep. I think your natural color is really nice. but as far as getting that piecey textured look, maybe play around with some different products... I recently started using bumble & bumble styling cream and it's a really great product - expensive, but I think worth it b/c it will last a while, you only need a tiny bit and I've been really happy with the results.
Sorry I'm really not much help in that department, but I do think your new cut looks super on you!! Hopefully you like it as well. You can always put a cute barette in, clipping one side back... and / or try a headband? but it looks great down and as you say, just 'plain', IMO.

doubleR: thank you for the compliments on my hair and my little guy!
The upkeep has always been my concern with color. I am extremely busy working FT, being a mom and going back to school in 3 weeks. But everyone keeps telling me that I should get highlights.
I think the problem I am having with acheiving that style is the shape of my head. I got my dad's oval shaped head, which comes to more of a "point" at the top than the model's head, which is more round at the top, if that makes sense. I think I am trying to force my hair into a shape that just doesn't work with the shape of my head.
Anyways, thanks for the input. I do love the cut and I really want to learn to do more with it. I am glad that my hair is finally too short for a ponytail. When a ponytail is possible that is ALL I ever do with it because it is so easy. I guess I am just lazy!

Part of it, like you said, is your head shape. Another part is the highlights help define it quite a bit. If you do decide to get highlights, go with 2-3 shades lighter than your hair is now (I assume it's your natural color anyways), like a darker warm blonde. Blow dry your hair in the opposite direction that it's going to fall to add volume. YOu can also use a root booster if you'd like....Redken makes an awesome one, but I'm drawing a blank on teh name. When your hair is about 80% dry, put some wax or paste in it, but avoid the roots. Just a tiny bit, like maybe a pea size or two for your entire head, otherwise it will look greasy and will weigh it down (lessening the volume). If your hair is naturally straight, there's no need to finish blow drying it, but if it as any wave to it at all, finish drying it.

Renrel: I love Bedhead's products for curly hair! I always buy new products/brands when I run out but that's a standing favorite. My hair is super curly, so anything will make it curl, but I love Bedhead, Redken, Kerastase, and even cheapy Suave. They (Suave) have the best anti-frizz cream and it's less than $2! Personally I'd buy small versions of several different products and play around with them to see what works best for your hair.

My hair is so long now (halfway down my back) and just plain shapeless. I'd like to cut it at or near shoulder length, but I have a round face. It is naturally wavy, but I straighten it all the time.

Hey ladies! Looking for some help and inspiration for my hair! I'm getting a cut on Friday. I'm shoulder length and i'm thinking about keeping the length but making it whispier (if that's a word). Not layers. To me layers seem choppy and they look really jagged with my hair type. Almost like the bottom layers just peek out a little longer than the top portion but it's blended really smooth. If that makes sense to anyone!! I'm even considering going a little shorter in the back and longer on the side but not a smooth swing cut... something edgier. OH, i already have side swept bangs so they are here to stay.
In about 5 weeks i have an appt to add some darker color underneath my dirty blonde color. I think the cut i'm looking for would show off the added low lights nicely.
Can anyone find some photo inspiration for a similar cut or color?
I'll try to upload a recent picture of me tonight.

Bluberry - would you consider long layers if you cut your hair just below shoulder length? I have naturally wavy hair just below my shoulders and it is *so* much easier to wear wavy since I have long layers. I also have a round face. I'll see if I can dig up a picture to PM you (I only semi-recently started wearing it wavy all the time).

I'm thinking of chopping my hair off (yet again) - I do this every year or so and every year I swear that I'll style it. Hi ladies, my appoinment is tomorrow and I haven't received any replies to my previous post. Any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated...this SAHM would love an updated look...
Thanks!:)
PS Wrighty, I love that cut on you...I think it looks even better when you styled it!
Katy -- I actually really like the Jessica Alba cut.

Wrighty - Your hair looks so good! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get it done? (I am wondering because we live in the same city! :p)
I go to Michele Marin at In Style. It's a little salon near Avalon Park (in Avalon Village). I don't know if that is near you, but let me know if you want her #. The girl in the 2nd picture with me also goes to her- and recommended her. She was the first stylist I've EVER been to who actually listened to me when I said I was looking for something a little different.

Thanks! As for your cut - I also have curly/wavy hair (actually, I'm wearing it curly today), so you could definitely go for a similiar cut. I just use a flat iron to straighten it. You could also go for a bob -- I was reading in Self that they are highly recommended for people with long faces (like myself!). Maybe something like Katie Holmes? She also have naturally wavy hair and I personally think that cut looks great on her (although, it was a little shocking at first!).

How difficult do you think this style would be to maintain?
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q204/kennedybm/cc/victoria_beckham1_300_400.jpg
I don't think it would too bad. You could probably just blow dry it with a round brush and / or use a straightener. Is your hair straight?

Wrighty thanks for the feedback. I really can't do bangs, they never come out smooth like yours...apparently I have all kinds of cowlicks so they is always a few pieces on the sides of my bangs that won't cooperate and there is also a frizz factor when I get sweaty (yuk but I go to the gym regularly). I have considered Katie Holmes cut, I also think it's cute and it looks pretty easy to maintain.... I'm wondering if I should give my self more time and reschedule my cut for next week... Well, off to look at some mags for ideas.

Brown Eyed Girl- Great taste in hair styles....love it, and used to have a style very similar. In terms of styling, I found it pretty easy to blow out my hair and get it looking all pretty but maintenance was hard! By hard, I mean that I really had to keep up on my haircuts (every 6-7 weeks, 8 was stretching it) because otherwise that edginess and clean line of how the hair falls starts to soften. If that is okay though with you, I say go for it...LOVE the style!!! :D

Thanks for the compliments ladies, I like it but it takes getting used to. :)
Katy no, I wish the 2nd 2 pics were after I styled it! I took the first pic before I went to bed last night but I felt like it really didn't show the style fully so I took to more myself today. I'm very nervous about styling it myself but if you like I can post pics once I wash it (probably tomorrow).

I was bored with my hair but didn't want to do anything drastic before my January wedding. So today, I got crazy and grabbed a pair of scissors, and gave myself spur of the moment bangs!
Not a huge change, but enough that it satisfied my boredom. Oh, and FH LOVES it!

Lookng for a cute bob hairstyle or something lighly layered. I have had the Julia Stiles picture posted here for a while and the Reese Witherspoon one before that. I am ready for something different.

Bumping for more ideas. Getting my medium length hair cut tomorrow. I'm looking for something shoulder length and a little funky. Layers are ok, side swept bangs are ok. I love the cute flippy cuts on the first page, but I just feel like they're outdated. I wore my hair like that in the early 00's - I don't want to be a fashion don't!!

I've had variations of this haircut for a while. I don't keep mine as long in the front, but it is longer than the back. I also have bangs--sometimes I keep them sideswept, and other times I keep them short and piece-y.
I find the cut incredibly easy to take care of. I just blow dry mine and it falls right into place. I use the Aveda volume powder (I forget what it's called) for umph.
BrowneyedGirl I got the same cut Victoria has a few years ago and it was by far the easiest hair style I've ever tried.
FYI: I have really, Really thick straight hair. My stylist thinned it out for me quite a bit or it would have looked like a mushroom.

Very easy if you have naturally straight (or mostly straight) hair, but if it's curly, I doubt you'd be able to get the same look. I have fairly curly hair and had it cut the same way but it was a completely different look because the back is too short to get as straight as it would need to be for that style.

Any suggestions on different styles? Going any longer than 1" above my shoulders is not an option. It tends to grow that far and then stop growing long and starts to get thicker.
Thanks!

I'm not sure I have any pictures of me with that cut but I will look online and see if I can find a similar one.
ETA - Well, I did find a picture of me but it doesn't show the style at all.
This (http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=6181&month1=1&pg=1&styl1=Barrie%20Stephen) is the closest I could find only I didn't have bangs and the front was at my chin and the back cut to my hair line. Sometimes I would straighten the front pieces but I never could get the back stick straight....it was just too short to get in the flat iron and nothing really to grab. I always had odd stray pieces going every which way. It was pretty short in the back, especially at the base of my neck (she used clippers even). Super easy to do if I wanted to wear it curly, I just slapped some gel in it and blow dried it with a diffuser til it was mostly dry, then sprayed it with hairspray.

I need some help! I'm headed overseas before Christmas for about a month, and I'm already thinking about my hair. It's long and straight now, and that will need to change. We will be hiking through the mountains, stopping at a different place each night. Showers will be at a minimum, and when we do shower, I'll have no hairdryer. So... I'll need something that will dry quickly and on it's own and still look ok, still be long enough to throw into a ponytail, and will still look great when I get back in the states. :) Now you understand why I'm already planning. Any advice or pictures or ideas would be much appreciated! :)
I need a change and a haircut in a bad way.

Nic!: I'm not stalking you ;) -- I just coincidentally had all my hair cut off and was coming over to look at what others have done and there you were! I have the same exact hair type as you do -- and the problem I've had with those really cute cuts you've posted is they might require some extra blowdry time.
I ended up getting a cut that embraces my curls / waves and went with the short, graduated bob. I have not had "short" hair in years -- totally liberating. If I can get a photo of myself I'll post before and afters here.
OT: I love that photo of you and your DS. So cute!
Sure you're not;)

nic: Is your hair naturally curly? Both of the cuts you posted are straight hair styles. How does your hair look when it's straightened? Are you willing to straighten it daily? BTW, I like both of them :)
Nic,
what about Christina Applegates 'do on Samantha Who? (Starts tonight on abc)
http://www.abcmedianet.com/showcontent/primetime/sam/sam_i/lead.jpg
I think if you have your stylist thin it out after she cuts it you wont have a huge mushroom on your head. (I have thick, thick straight hair and had my girl do this when I got my hair chopped a while back to keep it from mushrooming)
Foley- My hair is sort of straight up top but curly on the sides and in the back if that makes sense.
It takes too long to straighten my hair everyday at its length right now. I'm thinking that it won't take long to straighten hair that is as short as the pictures I'm posting. I want something cute and that can be accomplished in 15 minutes or under. I know, I'm probably asking alot.

Nic,
I think the Christina Applegate cut would be really cute. I think that you might be able to style it with some sort of product just by twisting mostly dry hair around your finger to create those ringlets. At least that's what I have learned from watching Nick on What not to Wear, but I don't have curly hair so I don't really know.

My mom has curly hair and she has told me that the shorter she cuts it, the tighter the curls get. Just wanted to put that out there.

This is EXACTLY how my hair is. I have a shorter cut (I think it's a few pages back somewhere) and it's SO much easier to deal with than when it was long (half the time I would throw it in a bun and call it a day). I straighten it a few days a week - but I mostly just straighten my bangs and then throw some mousse in it, scrunch it, and go "curly" (it's wavy more than anything - except for underneath).
The only problem with Christina's hair do is that my hair is pretty straight on top, I know, weird. I don't know how I;d get the top to curl like that.
could that be because the length is weighing it down? can you finger-comb it to give it some lift?

I just got my haircut about 6wks ago. Similar to this....http://www.virginmedia.com/microsites/siren/slideshow/celebtattoos/img_7.jpghttp://hair-styles.womendiary.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/victoria-beckham-hairstyle.jpg When my hair was cut I found that I had a lot of UGLY wave so to get the look I have to blow dry and use the flat iron.....fine! When the air is damp I get FRIZZ and my hair looks terrible. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can prevent this?
I currently use Big Sexy Hair mouse before I blow dry. Then I use "S" factor by Tigi on my ends before I use the flat iron and then I lightly spray the back with Big Sexy Hairspray.
I've never had this problem before! Any suggestions:confused:.?
Have you tried an anti-frizz serum inyour hair like Frizz Ease?
I chopped my hair last night, I'll post some pictures when I can but it's a cross between the two cuts I posted on the last page.

Here's me:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b214/Tracie58712/IMG_3822.jpg
I've had the same cut (long layers, side-swept bangs) for about four years (ack!) now. My hair is naturally wavy, but with a flatiron, I can make it sleek and straight. It's not thick, nor is it thin. It does seem to be a little flatish at the root, but I can get volume by using Volumizer from Aveda and a round brush. I don't want to go short (short being above the shoulders). I've done it before and it just doesn't look good on me.
Any suggestions?

I have this cut right now and LOVE it. I get tons of compliments. My only complaint is that you do actually have to do your hair - mind doesn't just do sexy messy on its own. So I have to use a blowdryer, and straight iron, and pomade to get the chunky flip to lay right. But it only takes about ten minutes to do, and is super cute! You should totally go for it, be sure to post pictures when you're done!! :D

I have short hair and wear glasses and I get a ton of compliments on both, so I am guessing they look OK together.
Sorry, all I have are birthday pictures...

Any suggestions for THICK wavy/curly hair? DD1 is thinking of going very short. Would something like the ReneƩ Zelwegger cut work? The first one tgr68 posted was cute. Obviously it would be styled wavy, not straight.

oh wow, everyone in here looks fantastic!
I need major hair help. I hate my hair. All I ever do is wear it up in a clip because I'm too lazy to do anything with it. I'm sick of looking like I don't care-I want to look like I made an effort without actually making an effort if that makes sense at all. I told DH I was going to cut it short again (had it short in 2004/2005) and he begged me not to cut it. But, my thought is, if I just wear it up in a clip every day, I might as well cut it, right? My other thought is instead of cutting it, I could get a perm...easy peasy-wash, mousse, scrunch, and go! Do people still get perms? I envy women with naturally curly hair! Will I sound like a total throwback if I call the salon and make an appt for a perm?:o Help!

That is where I am at right now....I have been wearing my hair in a pony tail since I found out I was pregnant last August:p I NEED to feel good about myself again.......I won a cut and colour on a local online auction here and am so excited to get something done.....
I had glasses almost identical to the ones you have except they were more oval, and I sat on them awhile back:p lol....so I'm wearing my old pair until I go back to work so I dont have to pay for a new pair out of my own pocket:p
LeslieR~I know just how you feel! I have been wearing my hair in a pony tail for over a year now:p
I dont think perms are out of style.........but that is just my opinion! I used ot get my hair spiraled all the time!
I LOVE curly hair too! I am so happy my daughter has her fathers curls:D

justHB and Sophia--you guys look fantastic! I wish I had the guts to go short, but I don't think it would look good. You both totally pull it off though! :D
love the cut justHB! Looks great!
I have a product question.
My hair is naturally wavy and sometimes I straighten it, which I love but it is time consuming and I have to be at work at 5:30 am so I don't do it too often :)
Sooooo, when I wear my hair natural, I have to put some product in it or it dries frizzy and not attractive. My problem with the product(s) I am using now which includes mousse, spray and/or a balm from Curls Rock is that when they dry they are "crunchy" and clumped together. Do you know what I mean?
What I want is for my hair to be wavy and "look" product-free, kinda like when Jennifer Aniston wears her hair wavy.
How do I do this??
DaniML
01-10-2008, 09:18 AM
kari, my hair does the same thing (except it's very curly, not just wavey). To avoid frizz I use Mousse and let my hair air dry. Like you I get the crunchy effect on my hair once it dries. So, once my hair is dry I just run my fingers through it a few times to loosen up the curls. That usually works really well for me.

kari - It seems like we have similar hair types. When I want to wear my hair wavy/curly, I spray some Fredric Fekkai Wave Spray (found at Nordstrom and I assume other places) while it's wet, scrunch, and let air dry. I get that natural curl look the best with that product.
Thanks Tracie, I'll try that!
Peppy

kari, like Tracie, I also use Frederick Fekkai to get a wavy look without crunchies, but I use his Luscious Curls Cream. Another product to consider. In addition to Nordstrom, you can find it at Sephora, and a bunch of places online. I also use the Luscious Curls shampoo and conditioner and find that it does make my curls bouncier and less frizzy, even when I don't use product.

The cold weather is making my hair a mess! It's longish - wavy and getting sooo tangled & knotty, especially when I'm wearing my winter gear of hat, scarf & big coat. It even gets tangled when I have it back in a pony tail. I usually use J&J No More Tangles spray but I think I need something else, any one have any suggestions?

I have an appointment on Saturday to get my haircut. My hair goes to my shoulders and has layers in it which I'm going to try to cut out. It's pretty thick but it's lays flat fast. You can style and hairspray it but it'll go flat within minutes. It's wavy and nappy if I don't blowdry it. Are there any styles out there for thick flat hair?

I think Katie Holmes hair looks nice. It's a slight bob...you could do the bangs for an edgy look or no bangs for a more conservative style.

I am getting my hair cut tomorrow and I have no idea what to do with it. This is what I currently have:
Long hair (past shoulders by about 5 inches I would guess) with long layers, a little framing around the face and no bangs. My hair is naturally wavy but I usually use a round brush to straighten it.
My hair holds water like crazy so it takes forever to dry. I definitely want something shorter and less maintenance, but not too short (maybe shoulder length).
I would love any ideas/suggestions!

Why don't you get bangs? I got them several months back and I think they're cute. I got so many compliments when I got it cut that way. It's a little like Reese's hair, except I part mine more in the center...but you can do both.

Thanks for the idea - I'm kind of conflicted on bangs. I had them up until I was about 20 and then I did get side-swept bangs a few years ago. The problem though is that my hair curls at the slightest bit of humidity and IMO curly bangs do not look good. I might ask the stylist what she thinks about side-swept bangs though.
Ribbit
07-23-2008, 01:27 AM
I was too nervous to get full on bangs, too (I also have wavy, sort of fine hair) so I went for the side swept look and I love them. It helps cover up my forehead, but I can easily pin them up if I'm annoyed with them. The rest of my hair is just past shoulder length, with layers all around (the shortest being just below my ears - for help in the volume department). Sometimes I blow dry straight with a round brush if I have the time, but this summer I've been letting it go wavy/curly. I just blow dry and straighten the bangs, then put some shine wax in the rest of my hair while it's damp and let it air dry. It has been the best haircut of my life - versatile and easy to maintain.

OK, here are a couple pictures of my current hairstyle. This is "straightened" but in humidity so you can see the waviness comes back. (please excuse the hidden identity - I'm paranoid about posting pictures online). This was about a week after my last haircut so it's grown more straggly since then.

I love it!!!
I was following this thread because I have a similar hair type and have been waffling on cutting bangs in or not. I hate the thought of side swept bangs poking me in the eye ;). I've had the same shoulder length hair since my teens and need a new look as well.
Can you fit it into a ponytail? That would probably be my only worry, as with kids I need to be able to pull back my hair sometimes. Dying to know how hard it is to maintain!
ivansbabe
07-23-2008, 11:51 PM

diam124
07-24-2008, 06:41 AM
Kristin - My 2 requirements were that I could tuck the bangs behind my ears, which I can (although I wouldn't really call them bangs, more like a short layer) and that I can put it in a ponytail. I can barely put it in a ponytail. I'm not sure that it would stay in it if I moved around a lot. I can pull it half back though and I also have one of those Goody cheap stretchy headbands if I really need to get it off my face. Hope that helps! I don't think it's going to be that difficult to maintain (see below). It was so quick and easy to wash and condition this morning! I also could let it air dry and let it be a little curly/wavy. I might try that this weekend to see what it looks like.
Thanks Ivansbabe! It took about the same amount of time to use the hairdryer and flat iron this morning as it did to make my old haircut mostly dry (about 10 - 15 minutes) but it looks way better than my old haircut mostly dry. I was being a perfectionist this morning though so I think once I get the hang of it it will be faster.

Looks great! My hair seems to be about the same as yours in terms of waviness with the humidity. At my last haircut I got my bangs cut shorter and learned how to style them with a flat iron. I'd never used a flat iron before and LOVE it. I can let my hair dry naturally (into a fluffy mess) and then spend five min going over it with a flat iron and it's perfect.

It looks very nice - more pulled together.
Can I hijack the thread for a minute - for those who use a flat iron on your hair - how do you use it. I have similar wavy hair I just can't seem to figure out how to use the flat iron on it properly.
Thanks.
diam, it looks great on you, definitely more polished!!! I'm gonna steal your inspiration pic. :) My hair is similar to yours and it's actually cut similarly to your new do, which I like. But when I go back for a trim, I think I want to tweak it a bit (to get rid of some more bulk on the ends) and that pic is a good starting point for what I want done. I have to say that w/ shorter hair, when I let it air dry, the waves don't work in my favor and my hair is a hot mess, lol. So I'm forced to always blow dry it, which is fine since it doesn't take as long w/ shorter hair.
diam124
07-25-2008, 11:03 AM
Thanks miaclear, lightview and vjel!
I got a lot of compliments on it yesterday so that was nice. Lightview - I dry my hair just using my fingers until it's about 80% dry. Then I clip up the top 2/3 and dry the bottom 1/3 with a round brush to curl the ends under. Once that's done I use the flat iron on that section. Then I bring down the next 1/3 and repeat the process. If I dry all my hair at once and then go back and use the flat iron it doesn't stay curled under as well.
vjel - the one thing the stylist said to me is that the girl in the picture has a lot less hair than I do. She did get rid of most of the bulk, but my hair is a little rounder than it was when the stylist did it. I think her flat iron was a good bit hotter than mine (I use the original Chi). I think I'll try the air-dry version when I don't have to go anywhere! :)

You've just sold me on this haircut. I spend about 15 minutes drying my hair everyday. If I don't, it's a frizzy mess. DH complains about it incessantly - he says I've wasted 5% of my life under a hair dryer. I know there is a flat iron thread, I have some searching to do.
I was leafing through a Cosmopolitan Style and Fashion magazine in the checkout line the other day, and they had a section about this kind of haircut - they called it "the long bob". So you are very in style right now, diem ;).

Thank you. I think in the before picture it looked nice but really, at that length that cut became super difficult to style and I found myself having more and more bad hair days.
I have a confession - I went to a different stylist. I feel very guilty. I loved my old stylist but I felt like she never really understood what I wanted. She always did a good job and I ended up with a cut and style I never would have thought to ask for but I guess I was just ready to try someone else and see if there is more that can be done with my hair and I was very pleasantly surprised with the cut I got!
I was scared to go so short becase my face is going to get pretty chubby in the next couple of months but I am glad I went for it! It is even easier to style too, which is awesome because I can use all the extra time I can get in the morning!

I could use some advice on coloring too. It's outrageous how much the salons charge to cover a few grays. My hair is dark brown, so I really do need to do SOMETHING about the grays. Can anyone suggest any good do-it yourself brands?

08-03-2008, 07:25 PM
Ya know, I used to do the "kitchen color" method (at home box kits) but recently switched back to a salon. For me, they do a way better job of touching up my grays and it's always so much more even and less red based, which was always a problem for me. Oh, I have very dark brown hair. I will say anytime I used Natural Instincts it always left a reddish cast, no matter what shade I chose (I guess it's ash vs. warm? -- Kanga?). So no help on brands - sorry!

What color is your hair now and what color is your natural hair color?
Brown hair now and natural too. It does have some red-ish undertones with the color I've been getting, but it's brown. I really need to just cover my whites, and I guess the subtle red-amber just makes it a bit more interesting. It's been 3 months since I've had it done, and while I do have "roots" they aren't horribly visible (mainly just to me b/c it drives me batty). I have an appt. on Thursday, but after that, I'll likely do it myself between visits, or spread out salon treatments a bit more.

I did a home color on my hair just this weekend. I think I've finally found a color that doesn't bring out the red undertones in my hair. *YAY* It was a Garnier color, "sweet latte". It's probably the closest I've found to my natual color since Herbal Essence had an Almond color.
I use the permanent color and it covers the gray pretty well. I haven't noticed it NOT coloring the gray - and it's about $7/box (recommends coloring every 4-6 weeks for touch ups)
Kanga
08-04-2008, 12:08 PM
junk - yeah it's an ash vs warm thing. Red = warmth (W)and green = ash. Red and green cancel each other out, so if you always get a red tone, go with ash. If you still have some red, go with double ash. On the opposite side, if you tend to get a greenish cast, go with a warm. I haven't done hair for a few years now, but last I knew there was no such thing as 'double warm'. If a warm color isn't enough red, then go with an RB (red/brown).
I have no idea about brands or semi permanent vs permanent for gray coverage, but don't pay much attention to the name of the color, just the serial number. It will have a number followed by a letter, for example 6W. The number refers to the level or shade, the letter refers to the tone. 1 is black and 11 is white blonde (think Real Housewives of the OC). If it has a number higher than 11, then I would have to guess it's the first or last number in the sequence. 6 is probably going to be a light brown, 5 a medium brown, and 4 dark brown hair. 3 is going to be near black, the average person would probably call it black. As far as the letters go, an R is going to be red, RB is going to be red/brown, a W is going to be warm, N is neutral, A is ash, and AA is double ash.
The main mistake people make with box color is straying too far from their hair color. If your hair is light blonde, you're not gonna get it black with a box color without some funky tones and vice versa. 3-4 shades difference is about the max. Another mistake is trying to go from hair dyed any color to a lighter color. Once you dye your hair, professionally or box color, there's no going back without using bleach. It doesn't matter how close the shades are from each other or to your natural hair color, but if it's lighter, best case scenario, it won't do anything and worst case scenario, you'll get some funky tones. When in doubt, err on the side of the lighter color, you can always go darker later but not the other way around (without bleach).

Personally (since my hair fell out so bad after ds and had to cut it off) I love it..okay personal opinon aside.
I've been a hairdresser for six years (recently quit to stay home with ds, but still do it at my house). I would start with lots of layers (don't go overboard, but more than just a little at the bottom). If you like that, and you want it shorter, then you can do it a little at a time (if you like to), or do it all at once. I think layers (the right ones) would add body and volume to your hair!

I'm thinking about trying out this cut since I need an actual style instead of just a wadded up ponytail on my head every day. What's everyone think? I even like the color but I'm not so sure if I should go that dark or not (my hair is a dark almond-ish color now)...Does anyone have a cut like this? I can't imagine it's too hard to take care of /fix, which is what I need!
