CBS' 'Smith' First New Show to Bite Dust
Oct 6, 1:53 PM EST

The Associated Press

Here's something Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen won't be putting on their resumes: stars of the first new TV show to bite the dust this fall. "Smith," the Tuesday night CBS drama with Liotta leading a band of high-stakes thieves, is off the schedule, the network said Friday. It will be replaced temporarily by reruns of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "Criminal Minds."

Networks don't like to use the word "cancel" — it sounds so messy — but the show's producers have been given no promise that it will return.

Its last episode had only 8.4 million viewers on Tuesday, according to Nielsen Media Research. It faced tough competition in the time slot from NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" and ABC's "Boston Legal."

Meanwhile, NBC announced the sort-of cancellation of its Wednesday night drama "Kidnapped," which stars Jeremy Sisto. NBC gambled by putting the show in the time slot held for a long time by "Law & Order," and it failed miserably.

"Kidnapped" will be moved to the television purgatory of Saturday nights, starting Oct. 21. Its producers have been told to wrap up the serialized drama's story lines by the end of the show's 13-episode order, NBC said.

Networks have been wrestling with how to satisfy fans who've gotten involved in serialized dramas when the ratings are poor enough for the show to be canceled.

Fox has put its new comedy "Happy Hour" on hiatus, but insists it will return.

Bummer! I caught the first episode and actually liked it quite a bit. :(

I've heard of two shows that aren't doing well. One is on a 2 week production hiatus; "Till Death" (the new Brad Garrett comedy) and also "Jericho" which has had terrible ratings so far. I really, really like Jericho, so that was disappointing to hear.

Huh. I actually kinda liked Smith. I guess I'll have to watch "the Nine" instead as my "new" show (to me they had sort of similar feels, just different perspectives). If CBS was going to cancel a show, I would have preferred they cancel Shark - that one I only watched the first episode.

I've seen a couple episodes. It reminds me of House in a court room, but not nearly as clever.

I never watched any episodes of Smith, for the same reason it failed - it was up against L&O: SVU and Boston Legal. Those are 2 of my favorite shows, and I refuse to tape more than 1 show/timeslot!

You might want to check out Brilliant But Cancelled's "Death Watch (http://www.brilliantbutcancelled.com/deathwatch/)." Smith is actually the 3rd, not the first, to be put on permanent hiatus, since the network isn't actually using the word cancelled.

This is why I am reluctant to watch new shows - I like them and they go away.

"The War at Home" needs to go away. It is the worst show I've seen in years. Its a shame because I like the actor who plays the dad.

"Till Death" is a photocopy of "Everybody Loves Raymond" just with different actors. This is why I am reluctant to watch new shows - I like them and they go away.ITA, that is why I didn't start watching "Lost" (the premise sounded like it could be bad). Then when I found out how good it was, there was no way I could catch up :(

I really, really hope they dont' cancel Men in Trees. It's quirky and a fun hour (which usually means they'll cancel - seems to be my luck)

Heck, if you want to cancel something, cancel Ghost Whisperer. I never watched it last year, but watched the premiere because of the "twist" and now, three shows in, it just sucks! How in the world did that show make it this far?

Same exact situation here. There's way too much to catch up with, so I haven't bothered.

I am always so reluctant to try new shows because I usually end up watching the ones that no one else does and they get cancelled. And I don't watch the ones that don't. Though I have a friend who works in the entertainment industry so he usually tells me which 1-2 shows to watch because they will be successful - otherwise I wouldn't have watched 'Lost' from the beginning either - I hate flying - why would I want to watch a show about a plane crash? This season he told me I have to watch 'Heroes' - I am not that into it but DH loves it.

I caught up by watching the DVD's. It's kinda better watching DVD's, since there are no commercials, but you miss out on the discussions after the show!

I was listening to the radio today and one of the DJ's said it best, she said the characters were TOO mean and not likeable.
I hated Amy Smart's character, i love Simon Baker at first but then he stole the motorcycle and that killed my buzz for his character. I was about to cancel my Season Pass on it anyway.

Runaway on CW has been cancelled.

'Runaway' lost in shuffle as CW axes first drama

"Runaway" has run aground. The CW drama has been axed after four airings. The series from Sony Pictures Television, revolving around a family who goes on the lam after the father is wrongly accused of murder, opened to weak numbers in the Monday 9 p.m. slot behind "7th Heaven" late last month. CW shifted "Heaven" and "Runaway" from Monday to Sunday last week, but the change didn't help "Runaway," which averaged 1.8 million viewers in its last airing. CW has pulled the show entirely and will fill the Sunday 9 p.m. slot with repeats for the time being.

Have you watched Heroes? I love that show. It might be a little too like Lost for you. There are things that we don't know and probably won't find out for awhile.

I heard that Studio 60 is still not doing well. I wonder if it will get cancelled or if it will be allowed to finish out the season?

Entertainment Weekly did an article of the top 5 shows we need to watch but aren't (and gave quick recaps) and both the Nine and Studio 60 were on them. I watch them both and hope they don't get the ax.

Also, I was on the WB lot the other night (doing my "tourist" bit with a friend) and we saw the wardrobe trailer for Studio 60 (and I've seen the filming signs around town) so I know there's at least a couple more episodes in them. That War at Home show (don't watch it) was also filming next door to where we were.

“Twenty Good Years” Actually Three Mediocre Weeks

After taking a dive on the DeathWatch (from Number 13 to number 7 in one week), the NBC sitcom featuring Jeffrey Tambor and John Lithgow has slipped into a coma. Some reports have said that the show has been cancelled, but NBC is stating that it may return as a mid-season replacement, fulfilling it’s initial order.
The sitcom earned great ratings in a demographic that matched Tambor and Lithgow (men over 60), but failed to capture an audience in the coveted 18-49 demographic. The rating for this past Wednesday night was a depressing 2.0.

"Happy Hour" Awakes from Coma
October 30, 2006

After lingering in a coma for just over a month, Fox is returning “Happy Hour” to air this Thursday night. Deathwatchers had previously called this show the first to go, and news that it was being pulled from the schedule caused little surprise.

The show had previously been described as “The Odd Couple” meets “Two and a Half Men” meets “The Iceman Cometh.” It centers around a group of boozy twenty-somethings who hash out their problems in a bar every day at 4pm. It’s like “Cheers” with a younger cast, or “Friends” with latent alcoholism.

This has been the main critique of “Happy Hour” -- that it’s similar to just about every other show in the universe, only it has nothing new to recommend it. We have returned the show to the active Deathwatch list due to this miraculous recovery, and you can bet we’ll be watching when it returns to air this Thursday (8:30pm EST) as the lead-in to the season premiere of “The O.C.”

Fox yanks 'Justice'
POSTED: 9:14 a.m. EST, November 13, 2006

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Fox has pulled its freshman legal drama "Justice" off the schedule, effective immediately.

The dismissal comes after the Victor Garber vehicle failed to gain traction in two different slots -- its original Wednesday 9 p.m. berth and, most recently, Monday at 9 p.m., following "Prison Break."

In its airing last week, "Justice" averaged 5.9 million viewers, holding on to just half of the "Prison Break" lead-in.

For the next two weeks, Fox will air repeats of hit medical drama "House" in the Monday 9 p.m. slot, which is warming up for the return of "24" in January.

Yes, Six Degrees got cancelled. Or on permanent hiatus (whatever they call it now).

And I don't think that's a permanent time slot for Boston Legal. They're doing a 2-part show and showing the first half Sunday and the 2nd half during it's regular Tuesday time.

Just found this:

By this time last year, CBS had already canceled “Smith,” the CW had axed “Runaway” and NBC had moved “Kidnapped” to Saturdays, where it would die the expected TV-graveyard death.

By contrast, this season's only cancellations have been “Nashville,” the who-cares reality soap from Fox, and the CW's ratings bottom-dweller, “Online Nation.” Otherwise, the big news is all about waiting, watching and hoping.

Last week, the CW picked up the ratings-challenged “Gossip Girl” for a full season; CBS asked for four more scripts for the underachieving “Cane”; and NBC ordered additional scripts for “Bionic Woman,” “Chuck,” “Journeyman” and “Life.” Yesterday, Fox renewed freshman reality series “Kitchen Nightmares.”
