This thread is now open for posting.

to do list:
1. ask if portlandbride has had her baby yet - anyone know?
2. update the thread archives with the last 2 thread titles/links
3. update stats of current new thread from p. 24-27 of last thread
4. announce that the book links post has been removed and ask if anyone has any rec's - of something more current/of value to the thread - to replace it. (such as links to potty-trainiing books, or how to raise a musical child, etc.)
5. hope everyone likes the new thread title - ok?

hello all,

i am leaving these stats here to be updated later. for some reason its telling me i can't change the font color or bold more than 6 items in a thread post (which is ridiculous, since there are numerous posts that have more than 6 items bolded, and i can't really imagine that that's a real rule - would play havoc with a lot of thread formatting in general.) i was trying to add stats to the RO post when i found this out (gender for usafwife's baby, and the name of Carissa's baby.) it won't let me do it for now. i will login later today or this week and try to add them.

meanwhile, here are some stats that need to be updated from p. 24-27 of the thread. this is reserved for future editing of course, when the board stops telling me to remove all formatting including bolding (which it says counts as an image right now. whatever....)

stats needing updating/p. 24-27 of prev. thread
carissa - baby's name Jonah :)
usafwife - its a boy :)

Thanks for the new thread!!! Very nice. :)

double strollers: Going to see if I can find the Peg front/back one today. I like the phil and teds too, just am not crazy about not having a spot to put the infant seat in at first, I agree w/ kim, I'd like to keep the wild man in front and out of reach from the babe. ;) We'll see what I come up w/ on my search today.

We're off to a Piggy's and Paw's party this afternoon, never been to one, anyone else know anything about them? I know they do them all over the country.

Double stroller: I'm pretty set on the Peg twin aria. It is soooo light and even though it's side by side, it fits through aisles and doorways. I will probably just sling the baby for the first few months and continue to use my zooper for Collin.

I have no hope of catching up. I'm still sick, and now DH is feeling a cold coming on. Luckily, Abbey doesn't seem to mind her drippy nose and cough. It must be allergies for her, b/c if she felt like I've been feeling for the past week she would NOT be happy. So I am thankful for that. ;)

Piggies and Paws: Never heard of it either. Even took me a while to find it through google...here's the page: http://piggiesandpaws.com/ Artworks using kids hand and foot prints. It looks like so much fun and the samples they have on their website are adorable. I might have to mention it to my playgroup...looks like there is one artist locally.

piggy's and paws: I wasnt' sure what it was either, my friend hosted one at her home. A lady comes in and does your dc's hands or feet w/ ever you choose from her collection of samples and puts paint on them and then turns it into a picture. I picked to do a tractor, which she used Landon's foot. He hated it :), screamed and curled his toes, so the foot didn't come out great, now we wait six weeks to get it back. It was OK, I wasn't really impressed, it'll be cute, I'm sure, it's just done on a cute piece of paper, nothing special, then you frame it, I guess. So, that's what it was. It wasn't expensive, just not that impressive, really, we could totally do it ourselves, ya know?

Now we're home, Ladnon has slept a total of 45 mins. all day and he's a total GRUMP!!! We're ordering out and getting him to bed early, in prep for the season premier of Houswives!!!! :)

Oh, boy am I tired! Asher was awake last night from about 1:45 to about 4:30. He SCREAMED for 2 hours straight, and we couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. Tried nursing, rocking, walking him, patting him. My parents tried to calm him down (we were at their house.) No dice. Examined him for something that could be hurting him, found nothing, and gave him Tylenol anyway. He would not stop screaming. It was like newborn days redux.

Finally, we took him downstairs, and he calmed down when I read him a couple of books. Then DH took over, because believe it or not, I also had a stomach virus last night and was throwing up in the middle of everything....

We determined he must have had a nightmare. Last time he had one, three months ago, the only thing that worked to get him to calm down was to totally change his surroundings. So while I threw up , DH watched a documentary on dolphins with him, read him some more books, and let him run around a little.

Then, around 4:30, I was finally able to get him to nurse back to sleep.

Fun times. So we're all a little tired.

Of course, Asher slept in the car on the way back from Philly from 4:30-7:00, so he'll be up for another hour at least (it's 10:00 here.)

Disney: Pretty pathetic, I've been excited all weekend about the season premier!!! ;)

Enjoying some peace and quiet, Landon went right to sleep, about 30 mins. early. Poor dh, had cattle out on a busy road about 20 miles from our house, got the call around dinner time and has been gone ever since. But, alas...it's quiet and I'm enjoying it. :)

Checked out some more double strollers today, still not super impressed w/ any of them. I just wish I could find a store w/ the front/back Peg Stroller for me to test drive. Damn!

Back from our weekend at my dad's house. It was kind of exhausting. Sarah did the same thing as Asher on was up on Friday night from 3:30am - 5:30am. I was so tired the next day. But it was fun otherwise....some of the highlights include that Sarah had her first kiss, LOL. My dad and stepmom had friends over for dinner on Saturday night who have a 20 month old boy. First let's say that Sarah does not play hard to get...she kept trying to hug him, which he did not like. But by the end of the night, they were friends and when his parents told him to give her a kiss, she puckered up and he smacked one on her lips, LOL. The next thing I want to share it do not say things you don't want your kids to repeat! When Sarah gets upset if I tell her not to do something, I sometimes say, "oh I'm such a mean mommy." Guess what she said to me this weekend? "Mean Mommy!" While everyone got a big kick out of it, I was not amused! :o

Bathtime -
Jack loves it. I just got him some of those colorful foam letters and numbers that stick to the bathtub and the shower walls and he hada BLAST playing with them! Really I practically had to pry him out of the bathtub he was having so much fun with those things!

Dentist -
Has anyone taken their DS/DD or does anybody plan on taking DS/DD in the near future? I read in my Parent's magazine that apparently the AAP recommends taking your child to the dentist at one year of age? Can't find that on their website tho. If that is true then I am a bit behind the game! :)

Lol! Sooooo maybe you need to sit Sarah down and have a littl talk about boys already? ;) So sweet.

Ped Visit Today
Can I just vent? BLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH......
Ok.
So...in the last few weeks Thomas has not has 2 days straight when he takes the same nap. I thought he wanted 1 nap a day...maybe not. So now I am trying 2 naps. But these 3 new teeth seem to be killing his mouth so he's a freaking bear. Ugh. So even though he's always in bed at 8pm and up around 7am he is waking up 2-4x a night crying and I have to pat him back down - only takes a minute, but I really need some rest.
And DH keeps asking "what's wrong with him?!" so I tell him teeth & naps screwed up and he INSISTS that no child over 6 months old needs routine naps.
Uh. Yeah.
So I'm glad he's back to work so I don't have to listen to him huff and puff about me trying to get DS back on a nap routine. So I can have some sanity. And stop hearing DS scream all day. And stop pulling my hair out.
Anyway.
Last night DH swore he saw some vomit, but couldn't find more evidence than a tiny wet spot. So I though DS spit up, no biggie.
Then this morning he vomited his entire breakfast up. On the new carpet. Everywhere. Sticky, chunky, banana barf.
I can't deal with any more drama, so we are headed to the Ped's after lunch. I need to find out what's up with his teeth and why he vomited. Please, I just need a calm, happy baby again!! I hope its nothing, but now I am worried something is actually wrong-wrong.

The new thread looks great!! I love the title! :D

Piggy's & Paws~Looks cute. I think I could put together something similar at home. It would be cool to have a party to see how it works, though.

Roseanne~Ugh! I hope you can get some rest and start feeling better! Happy (early) Birthday!! :D

Sasha~LOL!

Dentist~I'll probably wait until she has a majority of her teeth in. At a year, she didn't have any, so what would have been the point?

Kim~Ugh! Hope you figure out what's wrong with Thomas. So when are we going to see a video of Baby Beckam? ;)

Had to share this from the Tending Violet Blog on Baby Center: This weekend I was over at my friend Carole's house, and her 3-year-old, Lola, was telling me about her dad. "Daddy's my boyfriend," Lola said.

"Oh yeah?" I said to her. "Well, people call their boyfriends on the telephone." She picked up a remote control and dialed it. Her dad, across the room, answered with his fist to his ear. "Hello, girlfriend?"

"Hello, boyfriend! Let's get married!"

This week I'm babysitting for a friend - the same one I babysat for earlier this year. Well, her daughter has grown sooooooo much in these last few months and has been an absolute angel for me. DD, OTOH, has been a pain. She is not used to sharing her stuff, so she tries to take the other girl's sippy, toys, and books. We've already had two meltdowns and one timeout this morning! Ahhh! The joys of toddlerhood!

naps -- we got into a really good nap schedule at home -- usually 1-3pm... this weekend she refused to nap at all on saturday.. just played in her crib for an hour.. and sunday she napped for 30 minutes. . hope the no-napping trend will not continue.

food -- every day is a crap shoot .... although she'll eat fruit all day... and thats all she asks for... she'll usually eat grandma's chicken soup or mac n' cheese but thats about it

New Thread Thanks Heather for the snazzy new thread! I love the title too.

Dreshny and Sasha sorry about the middle of the night "Let me stay up for several hours" thing. And Dreshny I hope you feel better for your birthday!

Dentist I haven't even thought about it. What a nightmare that will be, DD sometimes screams when we brush her teeth!

kimthebride I hope Thomas is OK.

funny new words "elf" - that's what we get for looking at Christmas themed books in Sept. "hippo" and "eye brow"

QOTD - just the animal sound? DD will say at least a dozen of animal sounds - "baa", "woof woof", "meow" etc etc. But she won't say the word. When I say "can you say "dog"? Her response is always "woof woof", when she hears a dog bark, sees a real dog or sees it in books, she responds woof woof. How do I go about trying to teach her the "proper" word vs the sound? If I point to a picture of a dog in a book she also responds "woof woof". Or does it just come on its own and I shouldn't worry

another talking question does your DC use the "wrong" word for some objects consistently? DD calls a ball - "da" she also calls a bear - "da". If I say go get the ball, she gets it so she knows it is called a "ball" but she insists on calling it a "da". She also makes the "b" sound - says "ba", "boo" etc.

Kim – Holy Cow! I hope Thomas is okay and you get some sanity back. Does Thomas have all 20 teeth in? Damn! We have like 8.5 and I’m really not looking forward to the other 11.5…My DH thinks naps last until you’re in the first grade! Don’t worry he thinks I’m crazy for thinking that teething causing all our issues but I think it’s a good 80% of our toddler stress.

As for 1st dentist visit, my friend who is a ped dentist says it depends. Ideally it should be around the first year but it’s more about getting them used to the dentist and learning about oral health for your child. In reality around 2 is fine or if they have most of their teeth before then. She’s says she only recommends it at this age if there are identifiable oral issues. Right now, I just talk it over with the ped.

Sasha & Dreshny – we had the same wakings on Sat night. Damn nightmare memo!

Good Eats – the respite of good eating last week was gone this weekend. Besides pancakes, I don’t think he had an actual meal yesterday.

Sound We are all over the map with proper words and sounds. I think he's still figuring things out. My mommy groups swears that it all works out and to keep identifyng things with the proper words even though he calls it something.

Diva – I am really hoping that this diva behavior is just early Terrible Twos and that by the time he’s two, he’ll be over it. He’s not that bad actually but there are moments where he’s such a punk! We have only very few instances of pure naughtiness. The only thing that he really does his throw food off his tray near the end of the meal. I am doing very stern “Stops” coupled with noises and I can see him get it but he tests me every once in awhile. We finally decided not to bother with baby gates because he listens really well when we tell him not to go up the stairs. I like being permissive rather than dismissive.

I think the lack of words is just killing us. He wants something or wants to do something and he will just hit the floor like a drama queen when we can’t figure it out and gets in a tizzy and more worked up. When he does this, telling him to stop is kind of stupid when he doesn’t understand. At that pt, I don’t think he understands what he wants anymore! I started reading Dr Karp again and I get the whole Neadrathal perspective a littler better. Right now I think redirection and “setting up for success” is going to work the best for us. So I’m going to the dollar store tonight to load up on trinkets to defuse the situations of whining. I rather him be happy and distracted rather than whining all. the. damn. time.

I am attending a Toddler seminar (lord help me) this week.

Sasha: That is soo cute! Collin cries when other babies try to hug him! LOL!

Dentist: Not yet, but I think Collin will have all 20 teeth by Christmas, so it probably won't be much longer. He loves to brush. :D

Kim: I hope Thomas is feeling better. I hear you on wanting a happy kid back. The whole teething and nap thing is such a nightmare.

Naamah: What a cute story. I'm sure Shylah will learn to share. ;)

Talking and sounds: I just continue using the correct words and know that DS will eventually catch on. His vocab is pretty small still, but I know he understands a lot, so I'm not worried.

Food ~ Nic is turning into a picky eater too...he used to eat soooo well. I think part of the problem is that ms is hitting really hard and he's getting the same old stuff way too often.. but the last thing I usually want to do is cook a real meal after 4:30... I'm changing that today though. I WILL start cooking again...at least so Nic will (hopefully) start eating again! (poor dh has been eating takeout every night, nic gets frozen veggies and whatever i can scrape together quick for him..can't blame the poor kid for not eating really)

Kim ~ Hope the old Thomas you know and love returns soon and that nothing is seriously wrong..

Happy Birthday Roseanne! Hope you feel better for it! And that poor Asher sleeps tongiht for ya...

How cute that Sarah has a boyfriend already.. time for daddy to start worrying... :)

Nic doesn't share well either... Shylah's not alone in that... We're hosting playgroup tomorrow...it should be fun :) (it's a mixed age group thing, so most of the older kids are really good about him taking their toys, but theres one girl who gets really upset when he does it to her... and she's the one he likes to steal from the most, go figure..)

Back From The Ped's...I Thought I Said No More Drama?
Okay, so I need to backtrack.
Last Thursday morning Thomas stumbled at my friend's house on her area rug and fell head-first onto the hardwood floor. No hands, full-force onto his forehead. It was a big, screaming, crying mess. He got really worked up.
After about 5 minutes he calmed down and we got the 2 kids playing in his friend's nursery...and he threw up a little. I wigged out! Vomiting after head injury usually means concussion.
My friend calmed me down, went through the signs of concussion, we kept and eye on him the entire rest of the day. He was fine: never blacked out, pupils stayed even, ate well, napped ok, not wobbly on his feet, decent mood.

Then yesterday he got the all-over-his-bum pimply rash, which I assumed was diaper rash.

Then last night he spit up/vomited a little.

Then this morning he vomited his entire breakfast.

So we go to the Ped's today (DH actually managed to come, too). He seemed to have some more bumps on his legs, which could just be excema (it is the season!).

Ped checked him all out, cleaned some wax from his ears, asked a ton of questions. Thinks that its a small virus, since the back of his throat is a little irritated but he's not vomiting excesively. He says there is a very small chance he had more of a head injury that we thought, and told us what to do to monitor it.

Sooo....we are in a wait-and-see mode. I think it may be a small virus, too. There has just been so much going around and last week he was at the park and with lots of other kids...and he did have a couple gross, loose poops then too. This weekend he was just around me & DH and his poops were getting more solid. So he may actually be getting over a virus, and vomited for some other reason (eating too fast, too much, etc).

He fell asleep on the way home from the Ped's, so DH & I got sandwiches and had a little picnic in the livingroom before he had to head back to work. He was very worried about concussion, but he also thinks now its a virus.

So that's it for now. No fever or loose stools or anything, so hopefully he's almost over whatever it is!

allyray231

Roseanne- Glad Asher slept better and hope you're on the mend. Happy early birthday!

Sasha- Hee!

cynder- Everyday DH and I bemoan the fact that we can't understand what DS is saying!

Dentist- Our ped said not until 2, but we may go earlier because my family has a history of tooth problems.

So we pulled the trigger and bought a new car. It's a 2006 Chevy Malibu with all the bells and whistles. Technically it's my car, but I'm still getting used to driving.

Kim: I hope Thomas is feeling better and napping better, soon too. I'm sure you have the energy to keep up w/ all this craziness going on! ;) Hang in there.

Sasha: Darling story about Sarah's first kiss. Landon would be all over that. He's into chicks that give up the "bah's" (that's what he calls a kiss) w/ out a hastle!!! ;)

dentist: HA! Funny this topic should come up, I just had Landon in today, well...not technically for a dentist appt. but...He has this HUGE white sore in his mouth, it does look like a canker sore, but of course, when I saw it, I freaked, it's HUGE. So I called my mom (who works for an oral surg. group, who shares an office w/ a great dentist) and she said to bring him in, so off we went to find out, he bit the inside of his cheek at some point and has given himself a HORRIBLE canker sore. Poor guy, I don't know how long it's been there, I haven't noticed it when brushing his teeth??? So, once again, I felt like a dope! ;) Anyway...this dentist agrees w/ what Cynder posted, it's more about oral health right now than anything, they like to shoot for year 2, when the child understands more and can be more comfortable in the chair.

tgray99
09-25-2006, 05:39 PM
Dentist: We'll probably be taking Aidan a little closer to 2. She'll probably wind up needing a frenectomy (she has a large gap between her front 2 teeth because of her frenum). I needed one as did my dad (who didn't get one) and most of his family. It's a STRONG family trait on my dad's side. I've done some research and pediatric dentists usually won't do a frenectomy before she has all her teeth. Luckily we have really good dental insurance through the military.

Kim: I hope that Thomas is doing better tonight and that it is just a virus. Poor little man :(

Dentist: I wanted to take him at 12mo but DH vetoed me so we are waiting until he has all of his teeth. I know it's going to be a huge ordeal, which is why I wanted him to start a fwe months ago--just to get accustomed to it, but we'll see...

Sasha: Too cute! DS always kisses the little girl across the street and she tackles him with hugs :)

Roseanne: Happy early birthday! Yay for better sleep.

jrdh: Congrats on the car!

Nothing new here today. DS was extremely tired and cranky after school so he was in bed at 7 tonight. He has been wanting to sleep for 11-12+ hours/night lately. Please don't let him grow out of the pants that I just bought!!

35 inches tall (>97th percentile for 16 month olds)

Dentist:There's no way in heck I'm taking him right now, even with all his teeth. He hates doctors or any strangers in white coats touching him, and we have trouble getting anywhere near his teeth, including trying to get him to brush.

Kim: I hope your little one is feeling better soon. Every time DS bumps his head, DH is always afraid its a concussion (he's a little bit of a worry wart when it comes to his son). I hope its just a virus that works its way out.

QOTD - Brushing Teeth
My DD HATES having her teeth brushed. I do it when she's lying on the changing table after her bath because it's always a struggle so at least she's safely lying down and I can hold her still and get in there with the tooth brush. I used to do it in the tub or after bath in the bathroom but she'd always grab at the tooth brush as she wants to do it herself - but she'd rather bite on the brush - she doesn't know how to brush her teeth alone - so I have to do it - when I take the tooth brush she cries. I've even tried giving her one to hold while I brush with the other and that doesn't work. She is better with the little rubber finger brush that you use when their smaller but I don't feel like that get's her teeth clean enough. And advice? Also how many times a day do you brush DC teeth?

Haha, DH picked the little boy up and said, "Son, why don't you and I have a talk while I walk you out to the car." :p

Kim - I hope Thomas feels better and it's just a virus. Poor guy has been through the ringer it sounds like!

Dentist - I don't think Sarah has enough teeth yet to qualify going to the dentist, LOL. Her top 2 are just about in and a third one is now poking through. But I don't think she'll be going until 2 years old.

Words/Sounds - Sarah's got a pretty good vocabulary, but the words aren't always right. For instance, she calls her blankie "mine". I just always refer to it properly, and I think these things will come on their own.

Climbing/Jumping - Sarah has now mastered climbing onto the couch and she loves to try and run and jump on it. This terrifies me because we have tile floors and I know she is going to take a spill one day. There really is no way to gate off our living room, so she has free access to it. What is everyone else doing for safety measure with climbing onto furniture? (Other than I shouldn't let her, but it's an old couch that needs to be replaced anway  ).

climbing/jumpingAiden only jumps in the crib. Doesn't really climb at all.

Jrdh: Oh my goodness, he’s ssoo cute! He is like Jackson with computers – except Jackson just turns the computer off

Brushing teeth: Right now just once/day at bed time. He does ok for the most part. Last night he just wanted to suck the toothpaste off and wouldn’t brush or let DH brush but most nights he goes to town on the teeth brushing.

Words: He does pretty well getting the words right. He calls his paci “buddy” but other than that most things are right 90% of the time. He’s got thank you down pretty well so now we are working on please, er, peas :)

Climbing/Jumping: More climbing than jumping. He tried to climb onto the neighbors coffee table on Sunday which he’s never even done at our house.

Is anyone else sad at how big/grown up our kids are becoming all of a sudden? Anytime I see a little baby now I just well up with tears that my little guy is not a baby anymore. DH is the same way, it’s strange. I was folding his 18mo pants last night and they look huge. I can’t get over it!

Words Gesh..Nikki says next to nothing compared to what everyone elses babies are saying. I brought her to the Ped for he 15 month WBV and I told them all the things she does say and that I didn't think she was saying enough and the ped told me that the second child usually talks later because they have a older sibling that does all the talking for them.

Jrd. congrats on the new car.

This weekend is DS 3rd Birthday and I still can not bleive that hes going to be three already..Yikes
We are having a very small party for him. I would like to have had a big party but, since we have no family/friends near us thats not going to happen. He keeps asking me if the kids from his class can come over for a kids party, but I told him not this year. I didn't tell him why but the reason is I am trying to save for our family vacation.

Teethbrushing: I take a few quick swipes at her 4 teeth and the gums where she has teeth breaking through then let her chew on the brush. Chewing on the brush doesn't really hurt anything and it gets her comfortable with the brush. I don't want her to hate or be afraid of the toothbrush. I let her "brush" her teeth when I brush mine. She's enamored of all things brushes. She loves to brush her hair, brush my hair, brush her teeth, brush Elmo's teeth, you name it. ;)

climbing - I made a HUGE booboo in this department. I showed Avery how to use something short as a stepping stool to get up on something taller. Otherwise, she's still too short to get up by herself. Now she can get up on the couch and she stands on the cat carrier to get up to play with stuff on my old office desk (it doesn't have anything she can't have on it). I actually don't mind the climbing so much as the standing and jumping, so we're working on seeing that she sits down when she is up on the furniture.

Dentist - Ped said to go at 2.

Brushing Teeth - I do it during bathtime, but she doesn't appreciate my efforts ;). Our routine is similar to tgray - I do a quick swipe through then give her the brush to do on her own.

jrdhbunny~Congrats on the new car!

rancherswife~Poor Landon! I get canker sores, and they are always painful and hard to deal with. Orajel works wonders for taking away the pain!

QOTD: Brushing Teeth~We brush DD's twice a day with the little rubber finger brush. She only has three teeth, so it does the trick right now.

Speaking of brushing teeth, are any of you fighting bad breath with DC? I've noticed that DD has the most awful breath right now. We brush her tongue everytime we get her teeth. Could it be because she's teething? I know sometimes bad breath can signal a more serious problem, but she is a very healthy girl - almost never sick (*knock on wood*).

Welcome to the group, James!! ;)

Big Kids~DH and I were reminising the other day at the mall as we picked up some size 18 month PJ's for DD. :( He told me that I got the wrong size, and then proceeded to hand me a 3-6 month set and said that it was the right size. I think we are both in denial at how big she as gotten! :p Of course, he's been pestering me about #2 lately. I just keep praying that we can get a little more disciplined with our finances, so we can TTC in January like we had planned!

Disney~Happy Birthday to DS!

Not much going on here. I'm waiting for the little girl I'm babysitting this week to get her, so we can head to the library!

Brushing Teeth We do it before bed without any paste. It took a while but DH just swipes in there a few times and DS lets him. But if you give him the brush, you have to pry it from his death grip before he'll let go.

He now insist on brushing his own. Fantastic, can you dress yourself too?

climbing - our new couches are too big for him to do it on his own but he's really insistent on sitting in adult chairs where ever we go. I may have brought this on myself when we transistioned to the booster seat.

Another hard whiny morning. I brought Dr Karp's book to read at lunch. Of course at daycare dropoff, he was all smiles and barely waved to me. I guess I have to take what I can get.

climbing she doesn't climb the furniture yet, I didn't feel the need to show her how ;) But I did find her trying to get on the couch the other day by piling two throw pillows on the floor - still coudn't get up there though. She does climb in her little stuffed chair, and likes to stand on it so I try to explain that she must sit while in the chair.

kimthebride I hope Thomas is feeling better and is OK

jrdh too cute!

teeth brushing DH does it while I am diapering her after the bath. She bites down on the brush and makes it difficult. I still just use water. I assume that if you use toothpaste they don't actually rinse right? It just seems a bit yucky to have toothpaste left in the mouth, how does that work? I do have her "rinse" by taking a sip of water after brushing.

Disney ~ Happy birthday to the big 3 year old :)

teeth ~ Hmm,, I am probably nowhere near as good at this as I should be... I usually forget before bed. (oops). I only use water anyway, so I can't see that it actually does much. He's another one that likes to chew on it, and heaven help him if he gets his hands on the toothbrush...its a major battle/tantrum to take it away...

Bad breath ~ Every now and then, he has serious breath issues... they seem to go away on their own though...

Welcome James! Love to see ya joining the group :)

So...yesterday we had a really good day. We're hosting playgroup today, so I wanted to make some cookies to put out...Well...Nic "helped" make them. We had a BALL!!! I have to get some pics uploaded and share... I let him lick the spoon afterwards and he had a blast (no eggs in the cookies). He's quite the neat freak though...had it all over his mouth, but that was it. He wouldnt use his fingers either... (he is sooo not my son... I was the poster child for getting food ALL OVER...still am if I'm eating a chocolate ice cream cone)... It was absolutely too cute!!

Also, Nics new thing is to make himself dizzy. He runs around in circles, spinning himself cracking himself up hysterically. Too funny!!!

Climbing Oh my Grace trys to climb on everything it scares me a lot, we are working with her on not standing on furniture it is quite a challenge.

Brushing teeth Grace loves to brush her teeth because her and Daddy to it together, Eric does really well with helping her and showing her how it is done, we do it 1x a day before bed time.

Thomas
Thanks everyone for checking in. He has been eating and drinking well, no more vomiting or anything. YAY! We actually had plans with Birthday Girl Roseanne today and another friend, but we cancelled just in case. I'll be sure to sing to her on all our behalf when I see her Friday :D .

Does eBay Have A "Kids" Section?
I am looking to sell a blonde, blue-eyed 15 Month Old...no reserve! ;) Seriously, he gets up 3-5x a night which is NOT making cranky, tired old me happy. He throws food HARD and has (unfortuntely) good aim so often gets me right in the forehead. That's real fun. Especially in restuarants, causing me to leave 120% tips due to the mess he leaves behind. And he has taken to biting DH's toes and laughing so hard you'd think he'd bust something. And we're not even going to talk about naps.
What happened to my sweet, STTN, gentle boy? Where oh where can he be?

Brushing Teeth
He does well when I use the finger brush when he's teething, since the counter-pressure feels good.
Also, I'll give the regular baby toothbrush to him after bath when we're sitting in the livingroom and he'll chew on it, then I'll finish brushing them and have himsip water to rinse. Not perfect, but better than nothing.

Words
He now says "What!?" as in DH says "Hey Thomas" and he'll impatiently reply "What?!" like what NOW Daddy?!...lol.

James is too darn cute in his space PJs. :)

Holy Clinginess Batman! Anyone else going through a clingy phase? Now that Abbey is walking well, I thought she would enjoy going to the park, but she wouldn't let me put her down! Weird.

Climbing- Abbey has been climbing on the furniture for a while, but I try to keep an eye on her. Luckily, there is carpet in her playroom, but I do worry about the living room with our wood floors.

Brushing teeth- This is a MAJOR battle in our home. Scott has to do it b/c I'm really not so good at it. She screams and fights and turns beet red. In fact, the other night she got so mad at Scott that she wouldn't even look at him for the rest of the night. When he left her room she ran after him and shut the door! (Temper much?)

Kim- Abbey has been waking up a few times per night also. What is this all about? A new memo? On the plus side, I'm glad that Thomas is feeling better.

Sasha- Too cute about Sarah and her new boyfriend. :) Poor Greg. Scott would freak for sure!

jrdhbunny- What a cutie pie! I missed it, what kind of new car did you get? Congrats! Enjoy the new car smell. ;)

Big Mouth Baby: So, I have the loudest kid ever. EVER! I took her to the library today to play on their computers and play. She would.not. hold my hand. If I tried to hold her hand she'd pull it loose and shout "Nine" (which is her word for no...along with everyone in Germany) She was so loud we had to leave. So now we get to work on inside voice. Yay.

Toothpaste: Aidan's toothpaste is a toddler toothpast that doesn't require rinsing, it also doesn't have flouride in it. It's safe to swallow and apparently tastes good because she loves it.

Climbing: Oh yeah, she loves to climb into her high chair, on top of the coffee table, into the dining room chairs and pretty much whatever else she can get to. This kid is completely fearless.

Happy (belated) birthday, Dreshny!

Brushing teeth/toothpaste - Orajel makes a toddler toothpaste that is ok to swallow and flouride-free. You can find it with the regular toothpaste. Anyway, Sarah loves to brush her teeth herself. Doesn't really do much besides suck on the toothbrush, I think, but she loves it. So I also try to use the finger brush and get a good swipe in there. (You know, because of all those teeth she has. :p  )

Tgray - LOL about Aidan shouting "nine" in the library.

Need a new monitor - I'm looking for monitor recommendations. We currently have the FP 900 MgH one and I'm ready to throw one of the receivers out the window. Suggestions, please!

New development - Apparently Sarah is learning some Spanish at daycare and is now calling water (formerly wa-wa) "agua"! (ETA - I don't mean this in any sort of bad way whatsoever, I'm thrilled that she is learning it....but DH and I were stunned when we heard her say it!)

Happy Belated Birthday, Roseanne!

Toothpaste: We use the orajel brand, too and DS loves it. He also loves to brush on his own. I've been brushing his teeth since he got his first 2 at 6 months, so he's used to it. :)

Clingy: Yeah, here, too. I thought it was just b/c he was sick, but now that he's well, he's still up my butt!

Clingy ~ Yeah, but that's not really a change here. We have to be somewhere for a good 30-45 minutes before he'll do anything on his own. We had a friend over yesterday though (a 4 year old Nic LOVES), and suprisingly he cuddled for a few when they got here, but then managed to play..at first sticking close and then all the way in the family room while I stayed in the kitchen. I was kinda amazed...

New Developments- Funny that we were talking about teeth brushing. Last night after the nightly tooth-brushing battle, Abbey took her toothbrush and brushed Elmo's mouth, as well as Dora's. :p Also, today at school we were talking about a little boy who was turning one and Abbey held up one finger! Not sure where she learned that one as her teacher and I were both shocked. :p

Clingy- So glad I am not the only one!

Multilingual Babies- Abbey doesn't say anything in spanish, but she will point to her "boca" or her "manos" if asked (not sure why I started calling them that since I don't speak spanish. ). I do speak French so I often refer to things in French, which she has picked up.

Kim- So cute! Now you can answer "yes" to one of my pediatrician's well check questions. ;)

Tgray- Too funny about the library. I haven't taken Abbey for just that reason. The kid has no inside voice whatsoever. :o

Sasha- Sorry, no monitor suggestions. We have the Angelcare and it is just ok in terms of reception.

Kim- So adorable!!!

Tgray- Too funny. James HATES to hold my hand and will just drop to his knees. Then throws a tantrum when I pick him up. So much fun.

Sasha- We don't use a monitor anymore- wish I had a suggestion for you!

ahavnes- We got a Chevy Malibu.

Disney- Happy Belated Birthday to your DS!!

Clingy- Yeah, he's pretty clingy, but only in situations where he's unfamiliar with his surroundings or when he's tired. Like this morning we went to playtime at the library and he was like glue for about a half-hour. Then he wanted to go exploring.

Toothpaste- James loves to brush his teeth, but he bites down really hard on the finger brush and OUCH!

Halloween- We're back to the drawing board. I didn't really love the turtle costume and the headpiece drove DS crazy for the three seconds he was wearing it when I tried it on. Hmmmm. Think I'll head out to Old Navy when he wakes up from his nap and see if they have the monkey left.

Ok...who gave me their cold???? ;) Yes, I feel like crap!!! Not to mention, Landon has been in one of his finest moods ever for the last two days. I'm kidding, he's being a total CRANK!!! I cannot figure out what's wrong w/ the kid, I've tried it all. He's just in complete melt-down mode 24-7, he's becoming quite familiar w/ the naughty spot in our house. I'll ask him if he wants to go sit there and sometimes, he'll just go place himself in the spot. Then gets up and contiues his rant, for whatever reason. I'm hoping it's because dh has been away all week, we've seen him maybe 30 mins. in the last couple of days and he's a MAJOR daddy's boy right now, so I'm hoping that's the problem and when Brett gets home this evening, he'll go back to my happy-go-lucky Landon, cause seriously, he's wearin' me down, at this rate.

toothpaste: We use the same Oraljel toothpaste and he too, loves it, sucks it off the brush, before I can actually brush his teeth.

tgray: Too funny, yeah, Landon doesn't have much of an inside voice himself, must work on that before the new baby arrives. ;)

multi-lingual babies: I'm so impressed! :)

Sasha: We have the same monitor and I don't love it, will be getting new ones before the new baby comes, but I still plan on using this one w/ Landon. I'm not impressed w/ it though. I too have wanted to throw it out the window sometimes.

Had my OB appt. yesterday, we find out what this baby is on Oct. 10th, very exciting!!! :)

Dreshny - Happy late birthday!

New Developments - Jack is a big talked and will try to repeat almost everything you say, I am thinking he gets that from his MOm! He also has started walking on his tip toes EVERYWHERE it is too funny.

Yeah, we're not even gonna attempt that w/ Landon, I'm cool w/ buying new furniture for the new babe, I just can't see him staying put in a real bed. I thank God for his crib, and I dread the day he figures out how to climb out of it. Which, I know it's coming, this child can climb ANYTHING!!! I think he's part monkey, really! ;)

I have a sick baby today. :( She woke up this morning crying so pitifully, and she normally wakes up very happy and talkative. When I got her to the bathroom, she couldn't hardly sit on the potty and felt hot to the touch. I grab the thermometer and got a reading of 101.4! She's just sitting here on my lap now in a daze waiting for her doctor's appt.

Toothpaste - So here I am raving yesterday about how well Sarah does with letting us brush her teeth when last night she puts up the fight of all fights. :o I bought a new Orajel toothpaste flavor, berry, which is blue colored, and we think she didn't like the color, LOL. She freaked....luckily, it was DH and not me who got to experience this fun. ;) Needless to say, I won't be buying Berry Orajel toothpaste again!

Library - How terrible am I for not having taken her to the library yet? :o We haven't because she we must have over 100 books for her at home and all the library activities are during the week, so obviously we don't make it to those. Oh, and DH is probably banned from our local library because he still owes a book from like 1988!

tgr - Poor Shylah, I hope she gets better quickly.

Kim - Hmm, I can't see the video, when I try playing it, nothing happens.

Sarah got bit, again, yesterday. This is becoming like a weekly occurence now. It's always the same child who bites apparently. Would it be wrong of me to teach Sarah to slap this kid if he bites her again? :p ;)

Sasha: UGH! You’re kidding me on the biting thing!!!! How many times has this been? Have they talked with the biters parents? How many more chances does this kid get?! It seems that it’s been going on for a while. DS always got bit by the same child too. They finally had to move the child out and up so that they are now never in the same room.

Library: We go every other week for a baby program, but we haven't gone just to pick out books. I guess I should get a library card. :o I've always just bought the books I want.

BBB: We have already purchased a new crib. There is no way on Earth, I am putting Collin in a bed, yet. I'll wake up and find him sleeping under the dresser or something! LOL!

IrishEyes
09-28-2006, 09:36 AM
BBB: after we move in November, we're going to try a move to a bed, probably putting a mattress on the floor. (And we're not expecting another kid.) Brody has never been a fan of the crib, and at least 50% of the time winds up in bed with us around 3am when he gets upset after rolling into the side of the crib. We're hoping a BBB will allow him to sleep better.

Sasha: I definitely think Sarah should defend herself, although it could be just going straight to a daycare person and telling them she just got bit and pointing out the culprit. They should definitely put a stop to that!

Halloween: so is everyone set with their costumes? We went and got the Superman costume (got the idea from jdrhbunny's picture of her DS) since it was one of the only ones I could find with no hat or hood. DS hates having anything on his head.

BBBWhen Nikki was born we moved B into his big boy bed and it worked out well for us. I was not about to buy another crib that he would have used at max for 6-10 months. To me that would have been a waist of money espcially since we paid way to much for the crib.
Not so sure when I will be putting NIkki in a big girl bed. Maybe when shes 2.5yrs old.

Holloween Nikki is going to be a peacock from babystyle and B is going to be a Pirate from old navy.

psusna & Irish - Sarah definitely lets her teachers know, probably by screaming and crying immediately after it happens. They know who the culprit is, but they don't tell the parents. All we know is that it's a boy, and sometimes it's because he wants a toy that Sarah has, and sometimes because she takes a toy he has. The biter's parents also get an incident report that he bit another child. So at this rate, he already has 4 incident reports from biting Sarah alone and who knows how many for other kids. DH and I were wondering last night how many times they allow this to happen, something I am going to ask today when I pick her up. I understand that "these things happen at this age" but we are getting a little tired of it, you know?

IrishEyes

Sasha: I'm so surprised that after that many incidents, they aren't doing something else about this child. If one of these bites breaks the skin and then the wound gets infected... so many bad things could happen. I know as a mother, I'd want that kid expelled (at least temporarily...) or at least put one of the workers as a full-time supervisor of this kid until the bitings stop.

Sasha: They probably don’t have a so many bites equals dismissal rule, we couldn’t find one at any center in our area. They call it age-specific behavior and something they will grow out of with time. This shocked us, but the more we researched standards at centers the more we saw the rationale. HOWEVER, they should be working with the child, talking to the other parents about working with the child out of the school setting, etc. They should also be working with the teachers in terms of discipline for the biter, have some plan in place to keep them apart, etc. It takes a lot for a center to expel a child because that is lost income for them so they should be very open and willing to work this thing out. DH and I had a closed door, sit down conference with the director about the problem and immediately saw results. We told them if they did nothing to change the situation to help BOTH DS and the biter, we were pulling him from the center. We were just as concerned about the impacts to the biter as we were to DS. DS was bit a total of 6 times.

Naamah I hope Shylah feels better soon.

BBB Grace is not ready for a big kid bed, we are content with getting another crib, doing another nursery etc. This pregnancy hasn't been easy so it is a comforting thought not to have to train her to the big kid bed, I think we will do that around her 2nd birthday.

Appt Update
By the time we got to the dr's office, her temp had dropped to 99.2, so that was good. Shylah let the doctor look in her ears and throat, which turned out to be very red and raw. :( Overall, the dr said her symptoms pointed to strep throat, but the quick test they did came out negative. At this point, they are just assuming that it's a cold, but told me to keep a very close eye on things, and if they get worse, immediately call back. In the meantime, we are to give her motrin, keep her hydrated, and try to get her to eat something.

Bed: We put DS's mattress on the floor a couple weeks ago. We were having a really hard time getting him to sleep in it (he's usually fine), so I figured I'd give it a try. It worked quite well for us actually. He seemed to like being able to get on it by himself. When he would wake up, he'd get up and work his way out of the room (which wasn't a problem for us). The other day, he wanted to get into his crib. I moved the mattress back into the crib and he's happily sleeping there now. Not sure that helps anyone, but thought I'd share.

Colds - I have had a partially stuffed and sneezing nose for like two weeks now. I almost wish it would decide whether it wants to be a full-blown cold or not because this is just annoying. And Sarah has been battling a cough for the same amount of time. We're finished with the medicine the doctor prescribed for it, but she still has the cough.

Halloween costume - I actually got on the ball on that one last week and ordered her a pink and blue fairy costume. Too many people still say, "hey little fella" if she isn't dressed in something girly, so we had to go that route! ;)

Has anyone's kid drastically reduced their food intake? Nic has suddenly starting eating about 1/4 what he used to eat... I'm not worried enough to call the ped or anything...just worried enough to post here (and its not like he's wasting away...this kid is HEAVY)...

Roseanne ~ I don't know where you'd get a pattern for a costume in nyc (online maybe?) but...you have all those fabric/costume material shops over by the port authority... (on the macy's side of the port authority...closer to 8th)... I used to work around there...and would LOVE to shop through those fabric stores...

Oh, and talking about biting... what do you do when your kid is the biter? Nic's getting really bad, but the only one he bites is ME... ugh. I tell him no, but I don't think I'm getting through to him...

Weird People: So we were at the mall today just walking around and decided to have lunch. This weird woman (who I didn't see before I sat down and wouldn't have sat there if I'd seen her) proceeds to tell Aidan (not me) that she was too old for a paci and just sat there talking to her during our whole lunch. I was so annoyed. I couldn't even hear most of what she said because she was on my right and that's my clogged up ear that I can barely hear out of now. Ugh, why do people think they can be so weird? I'm sitting here trying to feed my kid and she just sat there and distracted her and made backhanded comments about her like being "too old for a paci."

happy1: Yeah, I know about the fabric stores. But I'm more crafty than I am sew-y, you know? I would probably just have hand-sewn felt onto a cheap sweatsuit or something (used to make costumes for myself and my brothers all the time.) But since Woolworth's closed, it's really hard to find basic craft stuff here (no Michael's or Jo-Ann's.) I hope when he's older I can make him some fun costumes.

Roseanne ~ Ahhh... gotcha. I'll have to ask my sister if she knows of anyplace (I know there's a Pearl there somewhere, but I think thats more artsy) ... She went to FIT and I know she had to do a lot of costume/prop type stuff... although I think I remember her saying that she got into a bunch of places to buy stuff cause she was a student there...

Sesame Street ~ Ok, for anyone that watches SS... We tivo them and use them during poopy diaper changes, since that seems to be the only way to keep him busy enough that his hands stay out of his diaper...anyway, we usually dont get past the opening skit thing. I know I read in the NY Times that they were adding a new character, Abby Cadabby (or something like that) but have yet to see her... Anyone know if she's been added yet? Do we just not watch enough of the show to see her? (I'm curious...I've been looking for her since the NY TImes...)

Sesame Street: I haven't seen this highly contoversial muppet "Abby Cadabby" and we watch everyday (loved today's with Seth Green!) but I've heard that she's controversial because she's pink and a fairy? Gonna do some research:

Here's what she looks like
http://images.wikia.com/muppet/images/e/ed/Abbycadabby.jpg

From: http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Abby_Cadabby
Abby Cadabby debuts in the first episode of season 37 of Sesame Street when she moves to Sesame Street from Fairyside, Queens. Abby is a shy, three year old "fairy-in-training" and the daughter of a Fairy Godmother. Her name is a play on the magic word Abracadabra.

Abby's magical powers are limited to popping in and out of thin air, floating when she's happy, and turning things into pumpkins. Her magic word, "allerednic," is Cinderella backwards. Although familiar with the world of fairy tales, Abby is astounded by such basic learning skills as drawing letters or counting, prompting her catchphrase "That's so magic!"

She can speak a language called Dragonfly and is teaching Rosita the language, while Rosita teaches her Spanish.[1]

Along with new friend Baby Bear, Abby is starting school at the Storybook Community School, where Mrs. Goose is the teacher and other fairy tale characters like Hansel and Gretel are her classmates.

Abby was featured as "Person of the Week" on ABC World News Tonight on August 18, 2006.[2] She is the first Muppet to earn the honor, possibly the first non-human. She also appeared on The Today Show on August 14.[3]

Tony Geiss conceptualized Abby as a way to simultaneously introduce a major female character to the show and add someone from a different culture, without "having consciously to introduce somebody from Indonesia or India."[4] Abby's design is an intentional departure from the typical "Muppet" look, because she's not originally from Sesame Street. The implication is that the fairies in her old neighborhood look like her. Her design was originally very earthy.[5]

Abby's arm rods are usually performed by Pam Arciero.

From: http://parentsplace.lohudblogs.com/2006/08/21/the-abby-cadabby-controversy/
The Abby Cadabby Controversy

August 21: There’s a new Muppet on “Sesame Street.” Her name is Abby Cadabby. She’s pink. She’s sparkly. She’s remarkably cute. And she’s causing a lot of controversy because she’s the first new female Muppet to join the show in more than 13 years.

Most of the hubbub seems to center around the fact that: a.) she is undeniably pretty; and b.) she can easily be imagined as a cuddly doll.

Abby joined “Sesame Street” earlier this month as the show began its 37th season. A 3-year-old “fairy-in-training,” Abby will be spending the year practicing magic, but also learning to count and use a crayon. Her catchphrase is “That’s so magic!”

Earlier this month, The New York Times explored the marketing imperative behind the creation of the new Muppet as the venerable children’s show gets more competition, notably from a little girl known as “Dora the Explorer.”

For a more opinionated take on the topic, Joel Stein at the Los Angeles Times has a column called “Elmo Is an Evildoer.”

“When I watched ‘Sesame Street’ in the ‘70s, the human cast and the Muppets were quirky adults who didn’t talk down to me with baby voices. Now the human cast gets almost no airtime, and the show is dominated by Elmo, Baby Bear and, now, Abby Cadabby — preschoolers enamored by their own adorable stupidity,” Stein writes.

If you’d like to hear Abby in her “own” voice, NPR reporter Michele Norris conducted a “interview” with Abby that you can listen to online.

I was thinking about “Sesame Street” because the show is a featured topic on Wikipedia’s home page today.

Among parent bloggers who opined on the topic of Abby, daddytypes.com asks an interesting question: “At what point do we consider Sesame Street right alongside every other company who, under the pretense of early education, uses a television show to sell your kid toys and books and videos and gear?”

What about you all out there: Do you have a special place in your heart for “Sesame Street” and its characters? Or, thanks to Elmo mania, do you group them alongside other companies that want to market to kids without giving something valuable in return?

And who plans to be first in line for that Abby Cadabby doll? (You just know it will be so cute.)

As a total aside, I think this is awesome, Sesame Street is taking notice of military kids:

Elmo's Dad Ships Out for Duty on 'Sesame Street' by Robert Smith

May 4, 2006: The folks at Sesame Street are working with military groups to make a new video for children of active service members. In it, Elmo's father deploys (although it's vague about whether he's in the Army or going to war) and the red-furry muppet has to cope with his absence. The target is the half a million children younger than five with parents in the military.

Sadly, we'll probably be getting this video next year.

Congratulations to PortlandBride and newly expanded family!

I haven't seen Sesame Street since I was a kid, but the whole 'controversy' over Abby is making me roll my eyes...HARD. What SS character hasn't been "cute"? Even Oscar the Grouch back in the day was visually appealing (at least to me!!). And sorry to say, but the show has ALWAYS had a marketing imperative. I'm a child of the 70's and SS was one of the only shows I was allowed to watch. Not only did I faithfully watch that show, but I also had a ton of SS Stuffed Animals, SS books, SS bedsheets, you name it! We even had a Sesame Street Little People set that my mom still has - now Avery and her cousins play with it.

Abby I didnt think there is that much controversey but when you take a venerable show like SS that's been around for decades, small changes get alot of scrunity especially since SS is trying to "compete" with the Doras of the world. I saw Abby's first show over Labor Day since I was home then and she seemed kind of annoying but heck I think Elmo is kind of annoying.

By the way, Joel Stein's full article on Abby and SS is pretty funny.

TV here is still not a big draw but we played a Blues Clues video today for the first time and this was one of the few times DS sat and watched and actually interacted. Was very cool and we were all doing the songs together.

psusna Not liking funnel cake is not a bad thing! DS had it at a festival here couple of weeks ago and the sugar madness was gross but fun to see.
Just came be to post that Ds is now over his bath phobia and I never posted the solution - PBK's water xylaphone. Total lure and tonight he tried to climb in the tub and almost got in on his own.

I knew about the controversy but have yet to see Abby on any show. And I admit that due to the controversy, I am curious to see the character. But our PBS stations and Sprout always seem to play shows from '04 and '05. I think the whole controversy is pretty stupid. I agree with Dierda, all the SS characters are cute. And SS is still one of the most educational shows out there. Compare it something like Teletubbies, which IMO, has zero educational value to it...it is banned in our house. I don't understand why they promote a show where main character cannot talk, only babble, to children who at the age where they are learning to talk.

We are taking Sarah to Disney on Ice tomorrow. DH got free tickets, row 18, so we'll see how she does, and are prepared to leave early. ;) Sarah hasn't really had any exposure to Disney characters, so she won't recognize them. Now if it was Elmo and Big Bird on ice, that would be a different story!

What do I do?
This morning DD woke at 5:15am. I usually don't go to her until 6:00am - so she was in her crib - whining and I was watching the video monitor when all of a sudden I see her standing on her stuffed animals and trying to climb out of the crib - she had what looked like one leg over the rail! DH got to her first - she was really climbing out. She's not even 16 months old yet! What am I going to do? She doesn't know how to get down from that height!

Any suggestions?
