oh, i never thought there was going to be an english bullie thread! yay! i figured that bullies were more of a "guys" dog...

i have a 1-year old bullie named enzo timberlake.

here he is around 8 months:
http://images.snapfish.com/3444668323232%7Ffp47%3Dot%3E232%3A%3D%3B49%3D%3B48 %3DXROQDF%3E232396%3B%3B36494ot1lsi

he's also on dogster (www.dogster.com/?87464). we just love him too much! we're planning on adding another bullie to our family. i'm leaning towards a french bulldog, but my dh wants another english. are you ever on www.bulldogsworld.com? that is the best english bulldog site, full of info and pictures, plus lots of reputable breeders and longtime owners post so their advice is terrific.

post pics of your bullie!!

I am always on bulldogsworld.com!! I never post though... just look at all the pictures and smile! But I get so sad when I hear about the losses.. sigh....

we will definitely be having more bullies in our future...

This is Ozzy after our wedding (he's 4 1/2 in these pics.. he's 5 1/2 now)... we had the photographer come back to the house and take some "family photos"! :D

I don't have a bulldog, but I have a question. My DH is obsessed with bulldogs and dead set on getting one when we get a dog. Neither of us has ever had one and I'm just wondering if there's anything we should be aware of. And I can tell that you are totally in love with your bullies so tell me some good things about them as well! :)

meirin,

It is great that you are asking for info about bulldogs. They are a very special breed. A great resource is:

www.bulldogsworld.com
Along with lots of cute pictures, there is also a lot of good info about health, maintenance, and reputable breeders.

Also:
www.thebca.org

It is important to understand their special needs before you purchase one. Bulldogs can have a lot of health problems, including - trouble breathing, skin problems, hip problems, eye problems... I'm being very general here. It's best to do some reading about them.

They are a popular breed and sometimes end up in the wrong hands. A lot of people like to breed them because they think can make a lot of money---but they could be creating lots of puppies with lots of health problems. Many people think they are lazy and easy to take care of. In reality, they are pretty high maintenance. You cannot leave a bulldog outside unsupervised---they are extremely sensitive to tempature, and can overheat and die quickly. Their skin folds need to be cleaned daily, to avoid infection. Many times their tight tails have a pocket underneath that fills with junk that can cause a serious infection--you gotta be able to get in there and clean it out.

Bulldogs aren't glamorous! They drool, snore, and fart! ;)

They need a lot of attention and love, but repay that love a million times over! They are quite comical as well. They are very gentle and sweet. My life wouldn't be the same with out my bully....he acts like a 3 year old child, and well, we treat him like a 3 year old child!

My DH and I were very lucky that we ended up with a very very healthy dog. We did research, but have learned so much more since owning him... and feel very blessed we have the type of dog we have. He just loves everyone and everything (except the vacuum cleaner and fireworks!).

Good luck!

mierin--I just noticed you are from MA----definitely check out the Bulldog Picnic, Oct. 2, at Hopkinton State Park, in Hopkinton. You will be surrounded by Bullies!! :D
It's a great chance to talk with people about their dogs!
When I get more details--I should see a flyer in a couple months--I'll post it here!

Hee! Sounds just like my DH! :D

Thanks for all the information. I know a little bit about them, but I certainly don't want to make the decision to get ANY breed of dog lightly.

icedwhite.... Enzo Timberlake is BEAUTIFUL!! How did you come up with that name?

hi jen! well, my husband is a car guy, so we named him after "enzo ferrari." and i'm an over-the-hill teeny bopper with a boy band obsession, so "timberlake" is my homage to "justin timberlake." :D ozzy is very handsome! he looks great for being 6 already! i'm sure he will look that good when he's 12!!

hi mierin,

i agree with everything jen said. those are two great websites with tons of info. i really love bulldogsworld because the posters are extremely passionate about the breed. they believe in bettering the breed always. they have a great list of recommended breeders (that's how we found our terrific breeder). it's not very long because they don't just recommend anyone who will pay to be on the list, it's very exclusive.

they are a high maintenance breed for sure. they need daily care and are prone to allergies, skin issues, eye and respiratory problems. because they need so much care, you really have to love the dog. they are an indoor dog and love being around people. they have the sweetest dispositions even though they look tough, and are great with kids and other dogs as long as they are socialized. they are perpetual clowns and their faces can make so many different types of expressions you would swear they understand everything. they truly believe they are lap dogs. they are low energy dogs who prefer the life of luxury and won't be mad at you if you miss their daily walk. they just want to be with you.

enzo is the love of our lives. he watches football with my husband every sunday and has his own jersey. we are so lucky to be owned by him!! :D

I don't have a bullie but I just wanted to say my grandparents always had them when I was growing up. They are the cutest and at the same time ugliest dogs!

My mom has a picture of me when I was about 2 or 3 sitting on the porch steps sharing an ice cream with Maggie, my grandma's then very old English Bull. Cutest picture ever.

I'm here! I'm here! waving hand back and forth I am loving all of these shots! I must say that I married into a bulldog family, heh heh. I had a yorkie and DH really really really wanted a dog, and he's in the Marine Corps. That meant....you guessed it.... a bulldog! lol.

Here is our baby- Stella (she is 2 years old, btw)

http://images.snapfish.com/3444693523232%7Ffp54%3Dot%3E232%3B%3D56%3B%3D%3B55 %3DXROQDF%3E2323559979283ot1lsi

We took this one when she was less than a year.

Here is the groom's cake that I surprised DH with on our wedding day!
Wait! Oh crap! The closeup was in my old WC journal I deleted it! sigh. Well, you can kind of see it in this pic to the right. I will scan in a better shot to show you asap! :)

And, I concur with everything that Jen and icedwhite wrote about really doing your research before getting a bulldog. My hubby was glued to bulldogworld.com for eons before we got Stella. That having been said, we still weren't prepared for her LOUD snoring ;) and her tons of medical bills. She's had trachia surgery, we've had her spayed (of course) and she's also had surgery on one of her eyes (common for bulldogs.) All this has added to up to some serious $$$. We are happy to pay it, of course, because we can't imagine life without her, but I do know someone who had to find his bullie a new home b/c he couldn't keep up with the dog financially! :(

The top of the baseball hat the bulldog is wearing says USMC (for my hubby's profession of course :) )

Nylons73----Stella is beautiful!!!! Great grooms cake!! We tried to incorporate bulldogs into our wedding as well---despite how crazy some of our guests thought we were!
Ozzy's pic was on our save the dates, and in our program with the title "Best Dog"! Our thank you's were Crane's notecards with a bulldog on them (I have 40 cards left if anyone is interested!). We also made a donation to New England Bulldog Rescue in lieu of favors---we made up a little card (with Ozzy's picture on it, of course) for each table and put it with a box of mints that were shaped like dog bones and had a bulldog on them!! haha! We were crazy and we didn't care.... if anyone really knows us, they know that Ozzy is #1! :D

If you are familiar with some of the people on bulldogsworld.com, do you remember when Jay posted his wedding pics-- the bulldog wedding cake was amazing and I wish I had seen that before my wedding! :)

icedwhite - thanks for the complements on Ozzy! He will actually be 6 this December---I tend to lose track of years when I figure out his age! ha! It must be because I can't imagine life without him!

nordey - if you can get ahold of that picture we'd love to see it...sounds adorable!!

Hey Jen! - Thanks for the compliments! Wow! You ~really~ incorporated Ozzie into your wedding! That's neat. :) I don't think you are nuts, do what you want to do! :) Hubby and I sent out our save-the-dates with our Christmas Cards one year, and the front of the card had a family picture of me, DH, Stella and our yorkie Martin. The cake was the only other 'bulldog' or pet related thing we did. We had a lot going on at our wedding. We had a military wedding, so respecting the Marine Corps and the traditions of the Corps was important to us as well. We did do a charitable donation as well, but we did it to Toys for Tots since the Marine Corps Reserve runs that program, and we had a Christmas-time wedding.

I don't remember 'Jay ' on bulldogworld.com. My DH probably will however, he was on that site NON-STOP before we got Stella. ;) The bulldog cake was kind of a total fluke. I stopped into a local bakery to get a cake for a co-worker. When I walked in, the front display case had nothing but 'doggie' cakes. I knew right then that I had to somehow surprise Mike with the bulldog cake. :) It ~almost~ didn't work, as my wedding planner got confused and nearly cancelled the surprise cake! I happened to mention it to her in passing, just before the wedding, that it was very smart of her to have left it off of the 'wedding day vendor itinerary' that she was going over with DH and I. She looked surprised and said "I didn't leave anything off!" Boy! Did we catch that in the nick of time! heh heh She rectified the mistake with the bakery and it all worked out. DH was so surprised and happy - you should have seen his face! His parents and my parents were incredulous that I had kept the secret from everybody (except my wedding planner) and they just loved the 'Stella' cake. :)
