ST. CLAIR, Mo. - A mother whose throat was slashed and newborn baby kidnapped was released from the hospital Sunday as authorities said they found a knife on property near her home.

A woman came to 21-year-old Stephanie Ochsenbine’s home in the town of Lonedell on Friday, attacked her with a knife and left with her week-old infant, Abigale Lynn Woods, officials said.

Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke said authorities found a knife and other evidence near Ochsenbine’s home, but would not give more details.

Heavy rain Sunday forced postponement of a search for more evidence.

Ochsenbine is not a suspect, Toelke said. The attacker was described as a white woman with black hair, 5-feet-8 and 200 pounds. She was believed to be armed.

Ochsenbine helped police artists with a composite drawing of the kidnapper after leaving the hospital. The picture could be released Sunday, Toelke said.

Fliers showing the baby, called “Abby” by her family, were posted in gas stations and restaurants in neighboring Union. The 6-pound girl, born Sept. 8, has dark brown hair, dark eyes and a strawberry birthmark on her forehead.

People in the area, about 45 miles southwest of St. Louis, attended prayer services Sunday for Abby’s safe return.

Search dogs, Franklin County deputies, FBI agents and several Missouri National Guard members combed the area around the home for clues over the weekend.

Callers continued to offer tips, Toelke said, but none led to a suspect.

“Any lead is good, but so far there’s nothing that has stood out,” he said. “There’s a lot of information we have, but nothing concrete.”

Ochsenbine told police she did not know the woman who came to her door Friday and entered the house after asking to use the telephone.

Ochsenbine’s 1-year-old son, Connor, also was in the house but was unharmed. Ochsenbine’s boyfriend and Abby’s father, James Woods, was at work.

Hospitals watching for newborn
Authorities have asked hospitals and doctors to be on the lookout for anyone bringing in a newborn.

The abductor has been profiled as someone who had a child die recently or as someone who could not have children, told people she was pregnant and needed to steal a child so her lie would not be found out.

From 1983 to 2002, there were 217 reported cases of non-family infant abductions, and all but a few babies were recovered safely within 25 miles of where they had been taken, according to a 2003 study by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. About three-quarters of the kidnapped infants were recovered in fewer than five days.

“We’re hopeful that’s the case,” Toelke said.

I first hear about this yesterday and I've been praying for the family ever since. I just cannot imagine what that poor mother is going through :( I hope her girl is back in her arms soon.

I wondered if the person who took her is trying to "sell" the baby or something.

This story is so horrifying to me. Thank God the mother is going to be alright, and I hope the baby is recovered soon.

The baby was found alive and well and returned to the mother yesterday. It's nice to hear of a happy ending, but the story still makes me sick! The kidnapper was turned in by her own SIL. she had been trying to pass the baby off as her own. I think she had a miscarriage a couple of weeks ago.

I just heard about it on The View! Thank God! They said the SIL was babysitting and thougth there was makeup on the baby so she wiped it off and saw the birthmark and knew it was the kidnapped baby!

I'm SO happy for that parents!

Thank goodness the baby was found unharmed! The news just said that the abducter may have targeted the family b/c they had a sign or balloons (it's a girl etc.) on the front lawn announcing the birth. A good reason not to display balloons/signs announcing the birth!

ITA. Those signs have always made me nervous.

I actually live in the St Louis area and this has been a huge story here. I had been thinking that the baby wasn't going to be returned, so I was so happy that she was...unharmed.

It was the SIL who turned her in. She was called to help take the baby to the dr and she noticed the make-up covering the birthmark. I am glad she turned that lady in.

The thing that is so funny is that the son of the officer that was the one who retrieved the baby from the suspect goes to the school I teach at. He kept telling everyone, "My dad is the one who stole the baby...back!" We told him that he might want to rephrase that and say that he rescued the baby!:D

I read that, too. So where was the kidnapper's husband?

We haven't found that out yet. We were discussing that at work today because the woman was trying to pass off the baby as hers. It was originally said that the woman lost her baby on Friday but no body has turned up at all. They are starting to suspect that she may not have been pregnant because she has lied about it before. We were wondering where the dad was during the supposed delievery and during the actual delivery/loss of the originaly child (if there as one).

CNN is currently reporting that the SIL of the suspect brought the baby to the police - that the baby was recovered thus from the suspect's family, and not from the suspect herself.

Regardless of the whens and hows, I was so glad to hear the baby was safely home. :D

That is what I saw on the local news just a moment ago. The suspect's sister-in-law noticed the baby's birthmark and became suspicious that she was the kidnapped baby.

Thank goodness Abby is back with her family! :D

Yes, this is true. The SIL met with the officer at the intersection of a couple roads here to turn the baby over. The officer it was turned over to is the father of the kid at my school. I am pretty sure that the suspect was still with the SIL at the time, and even if not like you said, the fact that the baby was returned is the most important.
