View Full Version : 9/11 as it happened on CNN
Hey. I searched but didn't find anything on this subject.
I was wondering if anyone was going to watch CNN tomorrow as they show 9/11/01 as it happened?

I'm kind of interested in it, but we'll be in the car all day (DH's grandmother's funeral is tomorrow).

I've thought about this. I want to watch it, but I'm not sure that I want to watch it at work - where I will be. It will be a hard enough day at my office tomorrow.

Just to clarify: the coverage will be on CNN.com's Pipeline, not on TV.
I'm not sure I will watch. I've been debating about it but still haven't decided yet.

No. Once was so much more than enough.

For some reason, I am interested in watching it. All the TV specials don't interest me, but this does.
I think partly because I can have some sort of detachment watching it. Plus, I know how the day ends.
I do want to watch it.

No way. It just cuts too close.
(But, as I've posted, I can't watch commercials about September 11th movies. There's no way I'd make it through the news coverage.)

As a historian and former history teacher, I really want to watch this! Unfortunately I am teaching until 1:30 today, but I plan to come home and watch at least some of it in the afternoon. I think it's an interesting piece of history and to watch the coverage as it actually happened gives us an amazing historical perspective on the day.
Of course, I think that if I had lost a loved one, or had seen one of the events of the day up close and personal, I probably wouldn't want to watch this. I can look at the coverage more for the 'historical value' of it than for it's horror. (although trust me, it's got plenty of horrific aspects, even when one views it as historical footage!)

no way-as a NYer I see it in my head everyday.
Just to clarify further, you can download the original footage at any time. In other words, you could watch the segment of the towers collapsing tonight at 10 p.m., if you felt the need.
MSNBC is also airing their archival footage online.

I watched it this morning when I got back from dropping my kids off at school. It was very emotional. I didn't see it 5 years ago because I was studying for a class and the TV was off.

I watched the Pipeline coverage this morning. I did not watch TV that morning. I was in a conference room in Miami. My co-worker was dialed up to the only analog line in the room and she was on CNN.com and then receiving updates via AIM from her boyfriend and relaying the news to us when CNN's site crashed. I had always thought how naive I was that my first thoughts when I heard that planes hit the towers was what a horrific navagational accident. Even when the 2nd one hit I still thought that it was a really tragic air traffic control problem or something like that. I'm a transportation and logistics consultant...I think in terms of planes and trains and what could go wrong. Terrorism never crossed my mind. This morning I think it was interesting to me to hear the CNN commentary from that time because that's what they were thinking too! It wasn't until an expert from the NTSB came on and that there was absolutely no way that this could be an accident.
Overall, I think it's pretty amazing that we have all this coverage archived and be able to replay it like this for many generations to come.

I've watched some of the coverage off and on. I didn't see any of the live CNN footage until late at night on 9/11 because the places I watched didn't have cable.
It was really creepy (for lack of a better word) to know what was coming next. I was watching the replay of when the first tower fell and Aaron Brown interrupts whoever is talking to show the live footage and says something to the effect of not being able to see the building because of all the smoke (not realizing that the tower had collapsed).
Since the attacks I have a hard time concentrating at work on the anniversary. It almost seems disrespectful to go through the day without acknowledging the anniversary.

ITA-I wish they would make it a holiday. At least here in NYC

Where can you download the footage from? Do you have a link? Thanks.
Just go to www.cnn.com and look for the links on the front page to "9/11/01: As It Happened." On www.msnbc.com, go to videos, then archival video: NBC News covers September 11, 2001."

Thanks. :)
I didn't end up watching it but I tried too. The site was not working. All other sites were working so I'm not sure if there were just too many people trying to access it or what was going on. Thanks Phen for letting me know you can watch it at any time. I may go back a watch it.
Well, I am not sure if you can get to it in two months or anything--plus the CNN Pipeline site says there's a free trial period right now, leading me to believe that it'll cost to watch Pipeline in the future. So I'd try watching later tonight or tomorrow.
But try a different internet browser. I couldn't get the videos to play using Mozilla Firefox, but had no problem watching them using Internet Explorer. :)
