Me :D

Here's my baby:

Kiwi was about 2 months old in the pics, but she's a little over 4 months now. I have a roll of recent pics that I need to get developed, so hopefully I'll have some new shots soon.

Do you have a pug? Post some pics :)

Here's our baby Frank. We just got him the end of March and he's 5 months old now. We just love him to death.

This was the funniest thing ever, to watch him freak out at this own reflection. He kept barking at it and pawing at the mirror like he thought he could reach through it or something. It was freakin' hilarious!

OMG, Frank is sooo cute! I love the first shot of him. Have you taken him to any obedience classes yet? We're thinking of taking Kiwi to a puppy preschool, but I'd love to hear others opinions abou it :)

BethS0103

We were going to take Frank to obedience school, but I'm actually doing really well training him on my own. He's 5 months old and he already knows sit, stay, down, shake and (almost) rollover. He still needs work on all of them as far as listening when he's super-hyper, but he'll usually listen if he's only moderately hyper. :p

Wow, I'm impressed! :) We just started working on sit. She's doing pretty good, so far.

Hey ladies-

I am picking up my little puggy on July 9th! We can't wait. I don't have any pictures of him, (forgot to save the ones from the breeder site  ) but he is a cutie. His name is Crouton and will be 15 weeks old when we get him. I am sure I will have all kinds of questions for all of you.

My pug is Oliver, he will be 2 on 08/10/05. And of course we are planning a birthday party. ;)

Kiwi is beautiful, how did you come up with that name?

MES, Congratulations!

I'm so happy there are other pug lovers here.

Once I figure out how to post a picture over here, I'll do it!

Do any of you have problems with your puggy having god-awful flatulence? Frank could clear a room with the gas that comes from his posterior region and we've done everything we possibly can to try to combat it but to no avail. We changed his food, the vet gave him some special medicine to see if it was caused by some bacteria in his intestines but he's still cutting some major cheese.

The vet's assistant said that is indicative of the pug breed to have frequent gas due to the nature of their anatomy and I was wondering if any of you pug mamas have farty dogs. :p

sdauer21
06-29-2005, 11:37 AM
Yes, my daughter loves to crawl into bed with Henry. He's not so amused by it, but as a typical pug, he puts up with her very well!! He's getting more fond of her now that she can chase him around and throw things for him! :)

Pug farts - oh yea!!! Henry can clear the state with most of his! I attributed it to the ... excuse the tmi here...excess pooh he eats (yes, he eats his own feces! ), but maybe part of it is the breed. We are trying, yet again, to get him to quit cleaning up after himself - I'd love to think that will help his odor some! Good thing he's so cute!!

We are trying, yet again, to get him to quit cleaning up after himself - I'd love to think that will help his odor some! Good thing he's so cute!!LOL! Damn right! :p Well, if it makes you feel any better, Frank's farts are really rank and he doesn't eat his own poo. :p I think a lot of it has to do with anatomy combined with the way he eats. I think most pugs are like this too, in that, they basically inhale their food, therefore causing excess air to go down with their newly digested food. If Frank would slow down eating I think he wouldn't be so gassy. The reason I say that is because when we first changed his food, the kibble was bigger than he was used to so he had to eat it more slowly and with that there was a grace period where he didn't seem fart so much. But not that he's used to the new food, he's gone back to inhaling it and with it, the rooms need to be cleared again.

IrishMeg
06-29-2005, 11:56 AM
Sometimes its a problem, sometimes it isn't. It has alot to do with what he is eating. Certain people foods make it worse. His own dog food doesn't seem to make it too bad.

Last weekend my parents babysat for Oliver. They spent 10 minutes searching the second floor because they were sure that he had pooped in the house. They said the whole floor smelled like poop. Nope! The little guy farted and he meant it!! He seems entertained when I freak out about it! I think he keeps doing it to gross me out. ;)

He seems entertained when I freak out about it! I think he keeps doing it to gross me out.I'm starting to think the same thing of Frank. He seems to get high off of passing gas. In fact, whenever DH does so, Frank will literally DIG at his butt like he's digging for gold! (Sorry, TMI I know :p). I mean, can you picture the scene? I crazed pug gets high off of farts and is digging at his own owner's behind? Once you get passed how gross it is, it can actually be quite entertaining. :p

I'm not a pug mommy (yet, or probably anytime soon) but I absolutely adore pugs! For Christmas, DH got me a page-a-day calendar full of pugs!! well on to how i am a bad pug mommy...well actually B is the bad pug daddy but anyway..Brian went into the garage to put away something and Conrad followed him in. B didnt know this and went about his business and closed the door. 20 minutes later i rip myself away from CC to watch TV and i ask him **where's conrad? , he says i dont know i thought he was with you.** Needles to say we were running all over the house looking for him, under beds, in the closets places he likes to hide. I open every door and then when I get to the garage i hear him whining...poor baby he had been in there almost a 1/2 hour...good thing it wasnt during the day...but he happily climbed right on B and licked him so i guess he wasnt traumatized...i was though....oh my poor baby..

i had to repost this from my journal...i felt so bad :(

That reminds me of what always happens with Lizzy. She's still a little pup so we constantly have to watch what she's doing. So I'll be walking around, going "Lizzy, LIZZY! Where are you, what are you getting into now?" and she is ALWAYS by my feet, or under my chair, or right behind me, and I just never see her. Of course she is wearing her "what do you want, Mom" expression!

Here's Lucy, she'll be 2 in October. She's our little baby, and she knows it! She loves Greenies, baths, walks, and all of her stuffed toys - and she gets excited at the mention of any of them! She's pretty good at fetching her toys by their name - is that normal for pugs? I think it's so cool, but maybe all dogs can do that?!

I made a separate thread for this but I figured I'd post it in the pug thread too to see if you ladies have any suggestions

I love my dog like he's my baby, but I don't know what to do about his potty training issues and I was hoping maybe some of you ladies could shed some light on the subject for me.

Ever since we got Frank at 7 weeks old, he's been pooping in his cage. He's now six months old and he's still doing it. He was getting better for a while, but now that I've gone back to work, he's regressed quite a bit. I presume he's doing this out of defiance. However, his cage is small enough that it should be uncomfortable for him to do this and yet he still does it. And it's not like he isn't potty trained. He knows he's supposed to potty outside. He just chooses to poo in his cage instead of waiting for me or DH to come home or get up in the morning to take him out. And when we are home, he never makes any audible indication that he has to go out like whining or barking. He just squats right down in his cage and poos. I was lucky enough this morning that I heard him stand up in his kennel and start pacing so I knew he was about to poo, but it's like he wakes up and says, "OK, time to poo now." He doesn't let us know he has to poo even though he knows he shouldn't be doing it. And this is only an issue with pooping too because he never pees in his cage. Maybe every once in a while, but he's definitely sending a message with the pooing.

I'm at my wits end with this dog. I love him to death but if I can't figure out something to do with this dog I'm afriad we may have to get rid of him and I DON'T want to do that. I really don't want to take him to an obedience class either because he already knows the basic commands from me teaching them to him. He already knows sit, stay, down, shake, rollover, etc. I don't really think an obedience class is going to help with this situation. Or am I wrong? I mean, how does an obedience instructor at Petsmart teach a dog, "Don't poo in your cage" ???

Have any of you had issues like this with your dog? How did you resolve them? I mean, if a dog is willing to take a sh*t in his kennel, how do you convince him not to do that anymore? I just don't know what to do.

I don't know if you've tried, but when we were crate training Lucy as a puppy, I read that you should make the crate small so that they only have enough room to lay down & turn around. The more room they have, the more likely they are to poo and then just hang out on the other side of the crate. We put a cardboard box inside the crate while she was small. You could try that or possibly one of those milk crate things? However, if he's not opposed to sitting in his crap, this method wouldn't work!

Other than that, I guess just try as often as you can to get up and let him out before he goes? That doesn't help much while you're at work though.

Does he poo in the house? Is he just rebelling against his crate? Maybe if he were confined to the kitchen or something he wouldn't go?

I hope you figure something out - you surely can't give up a pug as cute as Frank! I'm sure you'll get some good suggestions, something is bound to work.

BethS0103
08-15-2005, 05:47 PM
It's mostly a crate thing but he HAS pooped in the house a couple of times. As far as making the crate as small as possible, that has been tried, and he still poos and then steps all up in his crap. I think it's mostly a rebelling thing so I think he would do it even if he were penned up in the kitchen but I should try it and see how he does for an hour or two by himself in the kitchen.

I know I can't get rid of him, but trust me, in the heat of anger, you can think things you don't really mean. Worse case scenraio I'd give him to my mom who is home more often and can come home for lunch when she does work so there'd be less time for him to be alone for longer periods of time. I know my mom would love to have him so that is only a very worse case scenario.

That sucks your pug is having problems pooing in the crate. It does sound behavioral because you said he knows that he should poo outside. How long are you leaving him in there when this happens? And does it happen at a particular time of day? I ask just because he still is a puppy and may not be able to hold it. Also, are you letting him see you clean up the poo? I remember reading that you're really not supposed to show them that you'll clean up their mess when they're puppies. Are you scolding your dog when you find his mess? What I mean is, do you say "No Pooh in the crate, bad dog!" In a firm voice? My dog knew the words "no", "poo" and "crate" when she was young so I don't think voicing disappointment will be totally lost on the dog. I don't think taking the dog to puppy training will do any good but seeing a good vet could definitely help...one that specializes in dogs.

Your dog is only 6 months old...don't give up on him yet. I'd hate to hear of you giving up on your puppy because of this. You have to remember they're kinda like little children and some of them need more guiding in some areas than others. So much changes behavior-wise between the ages of 6 months to a year and a half for example. We had problems with our dog, and she would poo in the house (not pee) about once a week till she was well over 6 months...those events became fewer and fewer and now we don't have a problem. Hang in there, it will be well worth it in the end.

we didnt crate train Conrad until he was almost a year old, and it was our fault...we left him gated off in our kitchen (we lived in an apt) and left paper for him to go on, and it worked. We kept making the paper smaller and smaller while we were training him to go out and then eventually he didnt need it anymore. We were simutanesly (sp?) crate training him. We leave him crated while we are gone most of the time but ocassionally he roams freely. We has only had one accident in his crate but it was b/c we left him there too long  and it was only a little bit of pee and he had moved the bed liner away so it wouldnt be where he had to lay.

Maybe you should try talking to your vet amd see if he has any ideas...sorry i couldnt be more of a help. Do ya'll have a bed liner in the bottom of his cage, that is what i think kept Conrad from using his crate as a bathroom...

OK - so maybe I lost faith a little bit earlier with Frank, but alas it has been restored. Not only has he been behaving himself the past couple of days *knock on wood!* but today, for the very first time, my little man let us know he had to go outside!!!! He ran down the stairs and scratched at the door! I couldn't believe it! As soon as I took him outside, he pooped right away. Now I feel bad for even mentioning getting rid of him. :( We've still got lots of work to do, but at least I know he "gets" it now! :D

Is Frank only 6 months old? If so, I wouldn't stress out about it too much. He's under a year and he is still learning. By his first birthday he will be much better at holding it and letting you know he has to go. I promise you that this will pass and it will be totally worth it. You're doing a great job!

Question, do any of ya'lls pugs get car sick? We took Kiwi with us to visit our families (a 5-6 hr drive) and she got sick twice. We've made the trip several times with her now, and there's only been one trip where she didn't get sick. She rides in her carrier (facing forwards) the whole way. I read in one of my Pug books to try giving them honey about an hour before the trip, but that didn't seem to do anything for her. I guess we could always board her when we go home, but our families love seeing her. Anyone have any ideas?

No, Oliver doesn't smell much at all. In fact, my parents always comment on how good he smells and I don't really bathe him that often. :o Maybe a couple times a month. More if he really needs it.

Oliver has never been carsick. He rides in the car a lot but not on long trips like you described. He will be traveling to PugFest in October with me and my mom. It will be like an 8 hour drive and I'm worried about him getting car sick so I did some research on what to do. I didn't see the honey thing, though! I'll add that to my list.

Frank doesn't get car sick ever and he rides in the car a lot. It's rather strange how some dogs get sick and others don't.

Oh, and to answer your question bensgirl, pugs don't smell more than any other dog. My sister has a lab and I think she smells worse than Frank does. But worse than what? She doesn't smell THAT bad. I just think Frank smells better. :p

The dog smell was one of my concerns in getting a pug (any dog in general actually) but Jojo doesn't really have that stinky smell like some dogs do. I bath her once a month, sometimes more if she gets messy outside, like the beach when she has sand all over. I have a good smelling shampoo that smells like strawberry milkshake, I love it.

Pugfest is a fundraiser for SEPRA (Southeast Pug Rescue Association.) They do it every year up in the Atlanta area. My mom found out about it and is determined that Oliver must go this year. It is the last weekend in October. She booked our hotel in January! We're staying at a dog friendly place near the fairgrounds. We are driving all the way from the Tampa area which is about an 8 hour drive. This will be his first big road trip. I still can't believe I'm going to drive 8 hours so he can play with a thousand other Pugs. Here is the link. You can check out pictures from previous years.

S.E.P.R.A (http://www.rescuepug.com/)

ETA-The following link is where we are staying, in case anyone else wants the information. The hotel is having a free doggie breakfast buffet that weekend for the Pugs who are attending Pugfest. How cute!

Yup. Frank does this quite a bit too. I would say at least once every couple of weeks - sometimes more. But it's definitely not enough to worry about it. I chalk it up to him being a pug and eating too daggone fast. Hopefully he'll grow out of it the older he gets.

Thanks for the input ladies. He is such a chowhound. I am watching him and Oreo very closely when they eat now because Crou will eat his food and then shove Oreo away from his food and eat all of his! Oreo alerted us to this by one night standing in front of the food container and barking until we gave him some more food. He ate it so fast! Now after making sure they only eat their food he is much happier....we felt so bad, like we were starving him on purpose. Now if I catch Crou eating Oreo's food I tell him Crouton, he looks at me all what?, and then I say that's not your food! Then he does the funniest thing...he opens his mouth and all the kibble falls out and he walks away. It is so cute!

Hey all. I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience with their dog, whether it be a pug or not. Last night my DH, brother and I were watching a movie. When the credits started rolling and people made the move to get up our dog Jojo who was sleeping on her pet bed in the room got up and ran out of the room through the kitchen to our family room (where none of her stuff (food, crate, etc.) is located and started spazzing around on the floor. She rolled over a couple times. I reached her first and got down on her level and looked at her face and noticed a considerable amount of drooling and she was almost choking on it, having problems breathing. This lasted not more than 15 seconds but she was pretty shaken (as were we) after the incident. My husband decided to take her outside to pee...don't know why he thought that may help, but she went. She came back inside and was breathing fine but still had more drool than normal. It was pretty close to our bedtime so we stayed up a little longer to observe her and all she did was go back to her bed to lay down. We had her crate in bedroom last night and there wasn't a repeat. She woke up fine and ate normal and had a good poo. So does anyone have a clue to what that could've been about? We were so scared and I feel a little nervous leaving her to go to work. Luckily DH is planning on coming home a little early. She didn't eat anything bad (that we saw) and she was totally normal up till that point. Could it have been a nightmare and she went into shock? Anyone have any advise. :(

Not that I saw or know of. We had an earlier visit to my Mom's place yesterday but she wasn't really out of our site and she never goes upstairs alone when we're there (she's a scaredy-cat). My first thought was she got into something bad and ate it...but she seems fine now. I have to take her into the vet for her annual check up anyway. I'll bring it up then. My poor baby, I just want to go home and snuggle with her.

Where are all the pug mamas? I figured I'd try to revive this thread a bit

A couple weeks after we got our new pug, Guenter, DH went to take him out one night before bed and he decided to take a flying leap out of his arms. Now DH is 6'5" and Guenter weighed about 4 pounds at the time. When he landed, he screamed so loud and subsequently couldn't put any weight on his foot. We took him to the emergency vet and sure enough, he had broken his paw:
http://images.snapfish.com/345%3A9898%3A%7Ffp336%3Enu%3D3233%3E758%3E47%3A%3E WSNRCG%3D32334755%3A348%3Bnu0mrj
Now I can't read an x-ray for crap, but even I can tell that paw is BROKEN!

So we had to put his entire arm in a splint and keep a cone around his head so he wouldn't chew the bandage. This made for some amusing, albeit pitiful pictures.

This is how he looked the night it happened after we brought him home

Jojo is a little over a year and a half and she weighs 16 lbs. She has pretty long legs though so she isn't really petit, just very trim. But she's still under two years so who knows if that or when that will change. She is pretty active still.

Jojo's appointment went well back in November and she hasn't had any more weird seizure like instances *knock on wood*. The vet said it sounded like a seizure, and it could be totally random. Or they can increase with time and then she would be put on medication. Hopefully it is the former. Though she had a horrible reaction to the distemper (sp?) shot and she started poofing up in the face and her breathing became short and rapid. Then on Thanksgiving she broke out in hives. We had rushed her back in with the first reaction and our vet said that this happens every now and then with the distemper shot and that her immune system was very good and thus reacted the way it did, which is somewhat of a good thing. We won't get that shot again, thankfully.

ETA: Guenter looks so terribly sad in a couple of those photos. Poor guy :( LOL...it is kinda funny though. I tried watching the video but it didn't work for me. I hope he's doing much better now.

Polkadot: Frank just went to the vet a couple days ago and was weighed in at 19 lbs. I'm not too concerned about that but if he gains anymore weight I'll start to get worried. I think part of the problem is he doesn't get hardly any exercise now that it's wintertime. During the summer we'd take him for walks multiple times a day. It's just too cold for that right now. So I'm hoping once the weather warms up he'll take a little bit of the weight off.

ivansbabe: That's exactly how I felt when we first brought him home. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Once we got over the shock of it though, we did a whole helluva lot of laughing. :p

I fixed the link for the video link BTW so it should work now.

Oh my goodness, Guenter is so cute! He looks so pitiful but I have to say, the pictures made me laugh so hard!! (With him, of course, not at him :p )

Yikes, my Max is really overweight! Which we knew already- he was 27 lbs at his last checkup in July. The vet put him on a prescription weight loss food and we have been exercising him more. I'm pretty sure he's lost a few lbs but I'm glad we have a few more months before we have to go back! When we first got him (at 3 years old) he was overweight and we just spoiled him with too many treats. No more of that!

Hi Everybody! I'm a soon to be pug mommy! My DH and I are in the process of looking for a pug puppy.

I was just curious to know if most of you went through a breeder to get your pug or just through the paper?

Where I live, to go through a breeder, a pure bred pug is $1500 Canadian. If you look in the paper, they sell for $850.

Can you guys let me know how you went about getting your pugs? I would really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Farah

I went through a breeder, and got recommendations from other owners who bought through them. We travelled a distance but I felt comfortable with the breeders. We ended up getting the last fawn/female of the litter (what we wanted) so we didn't get to choose, though it was tempting because the black boys were adorable! You have to be wary going through the paper because most really good breeders don't use that source to advertise their puppies. We paid around $700 for our puppy, and I've seen the prices higher and lower in our area. Pugs are a very popular breed here so I think there is more demand, thus the higher prices.

Thanks ivansbabe. I am wary about buying one through the paper too. I talked to one lady today who had an ad in the paper. We are suppose to go look at the puppies on Saturday. I'm being really careful about the whole process.

The parents of the puppies are both there to view which is good. I'll be looking to make sure they live in a clean environment. I also want to buy subject to a vet check. I called a well know pug hospital and they charge $49 to do a check. I guess I could write something up stating that we are buying subject to a vet check and if for some reason it comes back that the dog isn't healthy or has something wrong with him we'll be able to get our money back.

I got my first pug (black, male) through a breeder. My 2nd (fawn, female) came from a very reputable pet shop. The first one was $600, 2nd was $850.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6dc30b3127cce977bf091217800000016108Aas27Fs2Zt9

We just got him home a couple of hours ago!! He's 8 weeks old. We found him in an ad in the paper but we're bringing him for a vet check on Tuesday (it's the first day we could get him in cuz they're so busy). It's $49 and they'll check him out and make sure he's healthy. If for some reason he's not, then we can choose a different puppy or get our money back.

He was a little scared at first and just kind of stayed in his kennel when we first got home but he's totally coming around now. He's being playful and has the cutest little puppy bark ever! He doesn't bark alot, just sometimes when he's playing.

He's already had 2 little accidents on the carpet!! We're keeping him in the kitchen right now with baby gates up.

Here's a few more pics!

Thanks for the compliments on Marley girls!! We took him to get checked out by the vet yesterday and he's fine!

It is so true that they steal your heart. We've only had him since Saturday and I can't believe how much I love that little guy. I was saying to DH that if the vet said he was unhealthy I don't think I would of been able to give him back and get our money back or choose another puppy. I think I would of kept him and did whatever it took to make him better. It's amazing how quickly you fall in love with them!

I still feel so bad every morning when I have to leave to go to work :( The first day was REALLY hard. I thought about him all day long and even didn't take a lunch so I could leave a half hour earlier to come home! ha ha ha.

I totally understand. We've had our boys two years and I still have days where I'm almost in tears because I have to leave them. It does get easier, though. While they are as little as your little guy, they sleep most of the day. That was the only thing that ever made me feel any better!

I need your help fellow pug mommies! Marley has started biting our hands and toes alot lately and sometimes nipping really close to our faces. I know he is just playing but is there anyway to help stop him from doing it??? When he starts biting I usually give him one of his toys to chew on, but it just seems he'd rather bit our hands and feet that his toys

He also likes to bite the bottom of pant legs and play tug of war with them. I knew getting a puppy was going to be tough! We're learning that now for sure!

Farah

IrishMeg
02-17-2006, 09:18 PM
We were really strict about biting because it hurts soooo much. We used "No bite!" anytime he tried to bite us or our pants or whatever. We would then disengage in whatever we were doing with him. We tried really hard not to encourage play that involved biting. (Which isn't always easy when they are puppies.) Be consistent.

It is definitely a developmental thing not a behavior thing. By their first birthdays, they had pretty much grown out of it. I can't remember that last time either one of them bit us or the kids.

Hope you are having a good time with Marley. Don't stress about the biting. He will grow out of it. :)

MexicoBride'05
02-17-2006, 09:31 PM
Thanks IrishMeg! We have been saying "no biting" to him in a really stern voice too but it just doesn't seem to phase him. I was just playing with him and he started tugging at my shirt and wouldn't let go so when he finally did I left the room and now he's crying!

He's the cutest when he's sleeping! ha ha ha.

MexicoBride: We have three pugs in our house right now - two of which are under a year old (two of the pugs are mine, and one is my mom's) so you can imagine the issues we have with chewing, biting, jumping, etc. What we have done and it works REALLY well is to use a spray bottle and fill it with water. Every time they behave in a way that we find undesirable, we spray them with water. This snaps them out of the behavior and almost always gets them to stop.

Another thing you could do is buy Bitter Apple spray then spray it on your hands and any other body part you don't want him to bite. The lady we talked to at Petsmart though told us that if you use Bitter Apple, you first need to spray it in their mouth before you spray it on anything you don't want them to chew/bite. This way it creates a pyschological "trauma" and any time they smell or taste the Bitter Apple, they will stay away. Many dog owners that have found Bitter Apple unsuccessful is because they just sprayed it on things they didn't want to chew and didn't give the dog a taste of it first. You feel bad spraying it in their mouth at first, but trust me, when you see them snorting and twitching and foaming at the mouth (yes, they foam at the mouth when you give it to them - that is normal) you KNOW they're not going to mess with anything that you spray with it.

Still another thing you could do still is whenever he is biting you, take your hand and use it like a dog would a mouth and "bite" down on him until he is in a calm, submissive state. Dogs use their mouths to "discipline" other dogs, so if you use your hand to "bite" him so to speak, it will get through to him better than just saying, "No bite." I learned this by watching the show "The Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic Channel. If you get that channel you should check it out. Cesar Millan really does change the way you look at dogs when you watch how effective he is with rehabilitating dogs. What shocks everyone the first time they watch it is that ALL dog behavior issues are caused by the humans. Because humans don't understand dog psychology they often, unconsciously, create behavioral issues in their dogs that they assume can't be fixed. Cesar says that ALL dog behavioral issues can be fixed with actions taken by the humans. It really is a very enlightening show. I'm not exactly sure when it's on because our Tivo records it for us, but I believe it's on at 8:00 on Friday nights. However, it is on at various other times throughout the week. I would actually suggest all dog owners watch this show because it changes the way you handle your dog - for the better.

DH, DS and my best friend just got back from our local pug rescue group adoption fair. There were some real sweeties there and we submitted an application to adopt one of the pugs. We will find out this week if we will get a pug. The pug-boy we want is 4 yrs old, sooo mellow and sweet and such a cutie. I hope we match up...please keep your fingers crossed. Thanks for all the tips Beth! We bought a spray bottle today so we're going to start with that and see if that works!

We just had a scare with Marley. He did the same thing that Guenter did! I was carrying him and he all of a sudden jumped out of my arms...he cried when he hit the carpet but thank God he is okay and didn't break any bones like Guenter did. It's weird because he never used to try and jump when we carry him but the last couple of days he started to, but this time he was just too quick and I couldn't stop him.

He's okay that so that's good. He's 10 weeks old today! We're taking him for his 2nd set of shots on Tuesday and then he needs one more.

Rositabean - did you end up getting the pug????

We finally got our pug yesterday evening. We had a home visit on Tuesday and yesterday we had to attend a long pug care class.

Introducing Nixon Puppingham!

He was apparently neutered yesterday morning so we can't bathe him this week. What we have learned about our boy so far. He seems to be potty trained. You say "potty" and he circles around and sniffs and goes pee. He also is crate trained. He goes in to his crate like it is his little den. He slept half the night in the crate and spent the rest on his fleecy dog bed. He really loves to be around us...it is so cute! He is just as mellow as I remember him which is perfect. We took him in our backyard this AM and after a short romp in the ivy he came back in with a tick and a flea! I have never seen a real tick before so I took it off with tweezers, stuck it in a medicine bottle, and disinfected the area where it was. They are pretty gross looking.

How do you get rid of yard fleas/ticks? I imagine they are there because of wild animals (heard a coyote howling the other night) and I have found a flea on myself and my DS over the last month after being outside. Yuck.

I am super excited to have little Nixon in our family!

Aww, thanks everyone for the compliments about Max! He is the love of our lives, that's for sure.

IrishMeg, we put him on a diet of prescription Science Diet R/D food, as recommended by our vet. We did cut down his amount to 1/2 cup twice a day, although now that he is down to his ideal weight we are giving him a little more. The big thing was cutting out the treats. To get him to go into his crate during the day we used to give him a couple of treats each time. I come home for lunch and sometimes we were putting him in the crate 3 times a day- it really added up! The vet suggested just giving him a few pieces of kibble each time instead. It worked great- he doesn't know the difference and couldn't care less- he'll eat anything! :D

BUMP!

We just today adopted a pug (purebred!) from the animal shelter. She's such a sweetie. Anyhow, joining in.

The shelter said her name is Diana (as in Princess ___ ), but we think we need to change it because our existing dog's name is Sam and we don't need people thinking we are crazy nutjob Cheers fans. ;) Still debating.

Congratulations on your new puggy! Yes, pictures are definitely in need. I kinda like Diana, it's such a non "dog" name, which makes it cute. Though I can see the potential comments.
This thread has been so quiet, I assume everyone's Pugs are doing well and are having a nice holiday.

Jojo wasn't feeling too good a couple weeks back. We lost power due to a terrible wind storm. On top of that, it was freezing so we were taking Jojo everywhere with us because we felt bad about leaving her in a cold house. I think the traveling and constant change in environments thru her off kilter. Once things got back to normal she became lethargic and didn't do anything. After a couple days she started feeling better but I was this close to taking her in. Glad I didn't have to. She's thankfully her silly self again.

I was completely shocked to find her in the shelter. They said they can't remember ever having a pug there before. My vet theorized that what happened was that some rich college kid (I live in a University town) got bored with her and let her run away. A family found her as a stray. So sad.

DH and I hope to adopt a pug - someday. I've been telling my mom how cute they are and she just doesn't get it, lol. When I was home over the holidays, we went to see Marie Antionette and she had a fit over the pug in the movie! Even royalty loves pugs!

I know! I loved the pug puppy in the movie too. It was so sad when they took it away from her, I believe it's name was Mopsy :) Did you notice later on in the movie she did eventually get another pug or two?

My mother originally thought it was odd I wanted a pug. She would tell me, "You know they snore and can have breathing problems?". I knew it could be a possibility, but for our needs the pug breed just fit with us. Jojo is now considered one of her grandchildren, and Jojo worships the ground my mom walks on. It's too cute!

I just started lurking today, and I can't resist.
All the picture of the pugs just kill me...(in a good way!)

My boyfriend and I just recently bought a pug in August 2006...His parents neighbour is a breeder. When we went to pick a pug out, she was the smallest in the litter, and the first one to come up to me. She just started licking my legs and when I picked her up she wouldn't stop licking my face and my neck! Someone told me that pugs pick their owners...and I believe my little Bella picked me!

Either that or she figured I would take her away from all the boys that were picking on her!! My boyfriend also said that I looked like a little kid on Christmas Morning when I saw all the baby pugs.

She is going on 6 months now; she is a happy, happy girl. She just learned how to "Sit" and we are working on "Lay down" and "Shake a paw". She has done all these things at least 5 times, but you know how pugs are...stubborn, stubborn! She loves to play with my friend's Bichon Shitzu Yorkie- they are best friends. Bella has a TON of energy, she can run and run and run, and then she looks at you like, "What?! You're tired already?! Let's go!!!" And on to the pictures!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c138/missmadelyn1/PC300067-1.jpg

Bella and Roli playing together; they get along pretty good. When Bella isn't trying to make Roli play...

Bella says, "Pshhht, I am way too good for you and that camera...but if you must..."

Hello miss-madelyn! Bella is just adorable! I love the picture of Roli and Bella playing. We also have a cat and Jojo would love if Mishu played with her more. Sometimes they chase each other around and every now and then I see Mishu rub up against Jojo (of course Jojo is totally confused and tries to smell Mishu's butt) but she mostly just puts up with Jojo. Their relationship is total Odie and Garfield.

Great job on the training. Pugs are stubborn aren't they? What worked well for us was having Jojo do these "tasks" before we fed her...kind of like a ritual. We ask her to sit on the rug (she knows where) then we count and say "high five" and then we say "shake". Sometimes she gets so excited she spazzes out and tries to do all tasks as fast as she can, before I even tell her what to do.

miss-madelyn
01-19-2007, 11:21 AM
ivansbabe- Thanks! And yes! They are soo stubborn. I burst out laughing though about your Jojo spazzing out. Bella does the same thing when she knows we are getting her a treat. She tries to do everything at once, and it ends up with her running around in a circle. She is a silly girl...

Bella and Roli get along soo well. However, Bella and my other cat, Paris? They are enemies...Bella tried to play with her at first, but Paris would have none of it. So now they torment each other to no end! Bella also does not get along with my boyfriend's parent's Yorkie. They HATE each other. Bella, again, thought that having another dog close to the same size as her would be fun, but turns out yorkies are not the friendliest of dogs! On Christmas Day, Bella moped around with us because she had her feeling hurt! :(

I love pugs! They are just like little humans!

Reviving the pug mommies thread to ask for some prayers for my little guy.

Cross posted from Sept 2007 Mommies:
My little pug, Max is really sick and I need some positive thoughts for him! We drove 300 miles round trip yesterday to take him to Boston and he is going to be having surgery today. He has some type of problem with his intestines, they don't know if it is cancer or not. They're going to do an exploratory surgery and possibly resect his bowel if they can. I'm so scared for him, and of course, I can't be there with him. But he is in the best possible hands and I'm trying to think positive. I know all of you who are pet lovers know that they are a member of your family- I think of him as my first baby!

I am just beside myself right now. He is so young (only 5 or 6) and I just can't imagine losing him. Are any of you in the Boston area- he is at Angell Memorial. Does anyone have any positive stories about them? They seemed like a wonderful place and came highly recommended by my vet. Thanks everyone!

Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers. Unfortunately, the news isn't good. When they did the surgery yesterday they did find intestinal lymphoma, and it had spread to his liver. They were able to finish the surgery and DH and I drove down to be with him. We were able to spend about an hour with him to say goodbye, and then they put him to sleep while I held him. It was the most horrible thing I've ever had to do, but I know he only would have suffered had we tried to treat it. The doctors said it really wasn't a very treatable form of lymphoma, and chemo would have prolonged his life only another month or two.

The doctors at Angell Memorial were great though, I'm glad we brought him there. They were so compassionate. His doctor cried almost as much as we did. We are really going to miss our little guy. Thanks again for your good wishes.

Phen - Congrats on your new addition. She is beautiful!...and wow, what luck to find a purebred pug in a shelter! I saw one in a shelter once and about crapped my pants. I was SO ready to take him home, but when I asked someone about him they said that he had just gotten lost and the owners were on the way. Darn LOL. I wish I was back to post some new pics of Marley but instead I'm back with horrible news.

Marley passed away last Tuesday :( He was just a baby only 1 year and a half.

He started throwing up last Sunday (August 19th) he threw up about 5 times that morning and then seemed to get better that afternoon/evening but then he was up a few more times that night throwing up.

I took him to the vet Monday morning and they wanted to keep him in the hospital there to check him out. The blood work came back and they said he had pancreatitis They gave him fluids and meds and sent him home on Tuesday but he was still throwing up and I wasn't able to give him his meds b/c he wasn't even eating or even wanting water. So we took him back to the vet on Wednesday. They kept him there for 3 more nights. They ran more blood tests and on Saturday the vet told us they were normal and that he seemed a little perkier and his tail was wagging so they sent him home.

We picked him up that afternoon and he was so excited to see us. He seemed back to his old self and I was so happy. He was fine that whole night but on Sunday morning he only ate a bit of his food and then just didn't seem well again. He wouldn't eat the whole rest of the day and started throwing up again.

My husband took him back to the vet on Monday and they then said that maybe he had a foreign object in him that was causing him to throw up. A different doctor was feeling his abdomen and said something didn't feel right so they wanted to do surgery to explore and see if something was in there. It turns out he did swallow some type of foreign object. They said it almost looked like a pot scrubber or something but we didn't have any lying around anywhere so we weren't sure what it could be. When they went in they ended up having to do another surgery b/c whatever was in there caused damaged to his intestines. They had to take 8-12 inches of it out b/c they said some of it had holes in it.

It was a big surgery and after they said he wasn't out of the woods yet and we'd have to take it day by day. We called at 5:30pm for an update and one of the girls working said he was still a bit out of it from all the medication he was on but he was okay and she was petting him as we spoke. Then not even 2 hours later we got a call saying he didn't make it :(

They think his body just went into shock. My poor baby. I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. This is the most pain I've been in in so long. It hurts so bad. I can't even look at his pictures without balling.

And now I keep thinking, what if they would of checked him sooner and if he'd still of been here.

We think we knew what it was that he might of ate. My husband was in the backyard of our townhouse and right outside the door there is gravel laid down and underneath it there is an underlay that is suppose to keep the weeds from growing I think and my husband noticed an area where the rocks were moved and some of the underlay was missing so we think that is what it was.

Marley was always trying to get into everything. It's not typically like pugs to do that I don't think but he was always getting up to no good.

We got him cremated and we are picking up his ashes this week. I just can't believe this happened. It almost feels like a dream.

I miss him so much. This house is just not the same without him around. I started writing down things that I will miss about him. I have 3 and a half pages of things already and I could keep on going forever it seems like.

It's good that I have the baby to keep me busy and my husband took 2 weeks off work to be with me because I was so upset.

Yesterday I was looking back in this thread and just happened to pick the page where I posted about just getting Marley. I just started crying. He was such a cute little puppy.

I can't believe I haven't posted these but here are a couple of our "new" puppy, Mr. Bingley. He's 7 months old, and we got him back in May. He's really such an affectionate and laid back dog...everybody loves him who meets him.

I'm planning on Bingley wearing this for Halloween. I can't wait!!!

Actually we got video of him of wearing it the other day and while he didn't really mind it he did find the front spider legs a little annoying so as he had it on, he had one spider leg in his mouth while going in circles and making this weird growling sound. It was hilarious! I'll have to see if the video turned out well (worried it was too dark) and perhaps I'll link it here :D

I promised DH I would post the game he created for me:

"Pug, Not Pug"

DH will point at different things - and I have to say if it is a pug - or not pug. It started when I was reading pug hill and there were lots of pugs on the cover...now we do it when we are walking around NYC. The game always works better if you have at least one pug. :D

This past weekend, we were leaving the vet with our kitties in kitty strollers from Outward Hound (which was already getting us a lot of attention) when DH spotted a very cute pug outside. He immediately pointed to it and said PUG! I think he won, but I doubt the owner understood, lol.

DH has promised me a pug one day, thanks for all the cute pics that made him change his mind!

hi everyone! I just became a proud and excited owner of a pug! She's fawn colored and just 3 months old...just under 6 lbs! She is definately the sweetest dog I have ever come across and doesn't seem to have a mean or aggressive bone in her body...she gets along great with my lhasa apso and boston terrior and of course the kids. Her name is Gwendolyn but we just call her Gwennie for short.
I'll post a picture of her when I can figure it out. or you can just check her out at my myspace

I'm just now seeing this PUG thread! As you can see by my username, I LOVE pugs. Our first pug is Henry. I got him at 12 weeks old in 2004 from a local breeder. In 2005 we adopted a young black pug from Prairie Pug rescue (http://www.prairiepugs.com/). His name was Tooter, for a reason. :p We renamed him Rudy Tooter. Unfortunately he passed away shortly after our daughter was born, in Feb 2006. He had surgery to remove a bowel obstruction, and ended up having severe complications after the surgery. :( In 2007 we adopted Hewey from PP rescue.

We have dogster pages for all 3:
Henry (http://www.dogster.com/dogs/41794)
Hewey (http://www.dogster.com/dogs/585255)
Rudy Tooter (http://www.dogster.com/dogs/131885)

Are any of you members of Pug Village (http://www.pugvillage.com/forum)? It is a fabulous pug forum. My username there is Zelissa. :)

MelissaLovesPugs I don't know if you saw my post earlier in this thread but I lost a pug too. It's been almost 6 months now and I miss him so much. I don't know when I'll be ready to get another pug but I do know I want another one in the future. They really are the best dogs. We have a 9 month old baby boy and it makes me miss Marley so much b/c I know our son would have loved him so much. He was only 3 months when Marley passed away so he didn't really get to interact with him that much.

I am sorry for your loss! It is so hard, I know what you mean. It took us about a year and a half before we were ready to adopt another 2nd pug. My daughter was less then 2 weeks old when our Rudy Tooter passed away. He was such a silly, goofy, fun loving pug, I just know she would have loved him. Rudy Toot has been gone almost 2 years now, and I still miss him. It gets easier with time but never goes away.

Edited to add: I found your post about losing Marley. :( That is so so sad, & it sounds almost identical to what happened to our Rudy Tooter. H
