My Golden started to cough a bit last night. I noticed it when she was eating, as it seemed the kibble was irritating her throat, as every bite she took would bring on a cough.

Today she is very lethargic, and coughs when she eats, as well as a little at other times.

She is a very well-cared for dog, and is fully inoculated.

I have had dogs for years and never seen symptoms like this. Des anyone have any ideas what might be going on, or when and if I should take her in to see her vet?

I would call the vet ASAP and take her in ASAP. Her lethargy is more concerning tome than the cough.

Yup G, you know I would tell you if you were OK waiting, but the lethargy is worrisome. May be nothing, probably nothing, but you don't want to take chances with that sweetie. Has she been around other dogs lately?

Thanks everyone, I am taking her in this AM. The more I watch her the more it behaves like a virus of some sort. She was kenneled the very first part of August, but that seems far too long ago for her to have picked anything up there.

Other than that, she has been at home, and our Dachsund has none of the same symptoms.

I am worried about my sweet baby.

I just got back from the Vet and she doesn't seem too worried about Sunny.

She thinks it's a mild upper respiratory infection. Sunny's lungs are clear, so she doesn't have pneumonia, and the congestion seems to be confined to her sinuses, ears and throat. Whatever it is it can't be too contagious as the Dachsund doesn't have it.

Sunny is on antibiotics, and if she doesn't improve in three days, I'll have to take her back in and then they will check further for a possible foreign object/foxtail or something in her throat.

My Vet feels pretty certain it is viral or bacterial, so hopefully she is gonna feel better soon. She has way more energy today than she did yesterday, so even before I took her in, I'd have to say she is improving. Poor baby. I hate it when she is under the weather.

Thanks everyone for your input! It's always super appreciated.

Glad to hear it doesn't seem like anything serious. My two are such drama queens when they don't feel well, it seems like they go from okay to deah's door in no time. I'm never sure if it's as serious if it might seem and always feel a little silly taking them in. Fortunately, it seems like not too big of a fuss for yours, and not too serious. Good luck!

Good good good. Lungs sound good is great news.
