My 7.5 month old has discovered how to stand in her crib. We have the mattress on the lowest setting so she can't get out. The problem is, she has the standing thing happening, but then just lets go when she's done, which means she falls backwards and almost slams her head on the back of the crib (we still have the bumper in there, and this has protected her from hitting it full on). I'm not sure what I can do to prevent her from hurting her little head on the back of the crib! Does she just need to learn *not* to let go?

Please help!

DS did that too. Fortunately it didn't take him too long to figure out how to sit down without hurting himself (maybe a week) But it was sad until he did because I didn't know what to do either.

It shouldn't take her long to figure out how to get down. ;) DS is now 15 months and the funny thing is he sometimes falls asleep standing up and just falls over. :p

My DS did the same thing around that time! I even called the ped. The consensus was that they can't actually hurt themselves even if they fall. I was really worried about that, too! Anyway, within a week he figured out how to sit down by himself, so don't worry.

Also, you'll want to remove the bumper so that your DD can't stand on it and launch herself out of the crib!

Hang in there. :)

Ditto to that - DS wouldn't do it in his crib, really, but in the living room, etc, for awhile he would just freefall backwards and bonk his head on the floor. It scared me - but he, like the others, realized he could sit and not fall!

DS had one bad "fall" in his crib when he learned to stand in there. He fell back and hit his head HARD on crib rails. Very soon after that he figured out not to do that! Unfortunately they often learn by scaring the crap out of themselves (and us ;) ).

This is now also the time for you to move anything DD can step up onto and launch out of the crib with:
- stuffed bumpers (mesh are great and climber-proof)
- FP Aquarium or the like on the exterior side of crib
- Anything like a mobile or musical on the exterior side of the crib

Good luck!

bumping up an old thread - my problem is DS doesn't let go when he stands up. So he stands there screaming when he should be sleeping. He's waking up during the night and missing naps and its taking a toll on both of us and DH too. I've tried staying in the room and leaving him in hopes that he would let go and neither work. He just eventually gets too tired to stand back up or he just misses the nap entirely. What can I do to help him????
