I'm hoping this goes here...

While talking to my GYN yesterday at my annual exam, I mentioned that DH and I might TTC next summer. She recommended that I get a rubella booster shot just to be sure that my vaccinations were up-to-date. She said that if I were to contract rubella during pregnancy, it could be extremely detrimental to a baby.

I'd never heard of this before, but I went on and had the shot, anyway, paranoid as I am about these kind of things. Has anyone else heard of this or had it done?

I was just reading about it today. It's best to make sure your shots are up to date otherwise to wait 2 months until TTC after getting the shots. They would test you during your first few weeks of pregnancy for all those sorts of things.

I would get tested for antibodies before getting an extra shot.

My ob/gyn gave me a prescrition for bloodwork to see if I still had the antibodies before TTC. I have heard that some ob/gyn's don't necessarily do this so it may just depend on your Doctor. I would get the bloodwork anyway though, it's one less thing you would have to worry about.

I would get tested for antibodies first - the rubella vax carries some risk of rheumatoid arthritis in adults so i wouldn't want to take that risk unless absolutely necessary.

My RE had me tested for the rubella antibodies a couple of years ago, and it turns out that I didn't have them anymore. So I got the shot. I had to wait two months to TTC.

I found out I was borderline with antibodies in my prenatal bloodwork, but since I had some antibodies left, they didn't booster me until after I deliverd my DD.
