The FBI says fugitive polygamist Mormon sect leader Warren Steed Jeffs has been arrested in Las Vegas, The Associated Press reports.

I am so happy this man was arrested. Did you ever see the story on Dr. Phil show?

I saw part of the show and he seems like a freak. I'm glad they caught him.

I don't mean this to be rude, but he is not a Mormon sect leader. He was the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints, which is not the Mormon church. I saw that the recent times article was wrong as well. It is just perpetuating falsehoods for a religion that is often misunderstood.

Thanks Boilermaker for pointing that out. I was just about to say the same thing....

I was so happy to see he was arrested, still makes me mad that they can only get him on two counts of rape by accomplice, they say that *could* put him away for life, but he is very much the cause of so many young girls being raped and forced into marriage, it just seems wrong that the other girls he has hurt are to afraid or ashamed to come forward. And boilermaker was right, definitly NOT part of the Mormon church, I'm mormon and we don't want any claim to him or any part of that religion.

They were talking about this on the news yesterday. Aside from the rapes, he apparently forces his followers to take jobs then they have to give him ALL of their money. He's raked in $24 million this way while his followers have to live off welfare!

so how different is it anyway? is it liek the difference between lubavitch and reform judaism? Orthodox and Reform? Fundamentalist Christian and Methodist? Or is it more like the Branch Davidians and Catholics?

It is my understanding that LDS and Mormon are the same. So, this is a Fundamentalist LDS group. I would liken it to Fundamentalist Christianity as v. Christianity as practiced by non fundamentalist traditions like Episcopalian or Mehtodist, or Orthodox v. Reform Judaism.

pocket, I'm not Mormon and I'm not a religious buff by any means, so I'm prob not the best person to answer this question. But if I recall my history correctly, the 2 religions come from the same group. The fundamentalists split and continued polygamy when the LDS church banned it in the 1800's. But I think they have a lot more differences than just the polygamy thing. I would classify LDS as a normal religion under the general umbrella of Christianity. I'd consider the Fundamental Church to be a cult similar to the Branch Davidians.

In regards to the capture, I am glad they found him and I agree, he should be charged with a lot more rapes! But I guess they can't get many people to come forward against him.

ETA: Kyrsten, if you are just going by the name, I would agree with you. But if you actually do some research into their practices, I think they are WAY more cultish than any of the other true fundamentalist religions.
