He started throwing up last Monday. He was licking our carpet and starting hacking in the middle of the night so we kicked him out of our room so he'd go downstairs on the tile if he had to throw up. We woke up Tuesday and there was throw up on the carpet downstairs. Nice. I thought maybe he was just feeling sick bc he does that sometimes and then he is ok. Tuesday night he is fine. Wednesday we come home and there is 2 piles of throw up outside our bedroom. Then that night he swallowed a pair of my thongs (clean, if it matters and I didn't know he had swallowed them) that were laying in my clean clothes pile and I woke up to him hacking and then he threw up again! So I go to inspect the pile to wtf he is so sick from and I see my VS thongs. Gross! He hasn't thrown up since but he still hacks and licks the carpet and whenever we take him out, he eats grass non-stop! Why is he so sick? We are going to call the vet tomorrow but thought I could get some insight from here.

ETA--he never eats anything, like thongs and such. Never. He is 8 years old and this is the first time he's ever done that.

sounds like a foreign body problem...you need to have xrays done and maybe a barium study...if it's something hard...your dog might need surgery. hope that's not it.

This is strange because we just rushed our dog to the ER vet last night for a very similar thing.

Some quick questions: Is he abdomen distended? Does it feel hard? Is he acting lethargic?

We took our dog to the vet because we were concerned about bloat, which can kill a dog. They did an x-ray and determined that it wasn't bloat, but that she has somehow filled her abdomen with gas. She was trying to eat anything (leaves, grass, fur, toy fluff) because she was so uncomfortable.

The vet gave her a shot to relax her. Unfortunately, today, she is still full of gas. So we just gave her a Phazyme. If she's not better in a few hours, we're taking her back to the ER vet.

There are a lot of things that can cause a dog to have an upset stomach, but his other behaviors of licking the carpet, eating grass, eating your thong are just him trying to make himself feel better. Pretty standard for a sick dog. You can't get mad at him for it...he doesn't know any better.

That being said, for his health and your sanity, confine to a room where he can't get into things, give him a soft spot to lay and take him to the vet as planned tomorrow. At least that will help contain the mess.

Poor guy...I hope he feels better.

I hope your dog is okay.

Oh I'm not mad at him...it's just a little frustrating. Hopefully the vet will have an answer for us :)

Our dog is actually back at the ER vet right now. :( She just hasn't been herself today, so DH took her back in. Hopefully we'll get some answers tonight.

I hope that the vet has good news about your dog.

I'm so sorry about your dog.

My mom just had to deal with this last week. On top of Mom having chemo on Monday :( , her little dachshund started throwing up on Wed. By Thursday they found an obstruction by x-ray and tried to do surgery. Her little heart rate kept dropping so they stopped and had my mom take her to a special pet hospital near Portland, OR. $3000 later (it was a really high tech and therefore more expensive hospital) and my mom got her baby back yesterday afternoon. Joey will be fine but she will have a long recovery.

I really hope everything will be okay with you and EJS's dogs.

We took our dog to the emergency vet one night because of a similar issue. He is notorious for eating socks, washclothes, etc. though, so that's what we suspected. After a doggie ultrasound revealed that it was not a "mechanical blockage" problem and some other tests were done it was determined that he had pancreatitis. He was put on a special diet for a couple of weeks and has been fine since then.

Let me tell you, even though the middle of the night doggie ultrasound wasn't cheap, I'm so happy they were able to quickly/easily determine that it wasn't a sock in there plugging things up.

Has he eaten any grass that might have been sprayed with something not so pet-friendly?
