Country star accused of illegally killing tame bear (http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/08/16/people.troyleegentry.ap/index.html)

DULUTH, Minnesota (AP) -- Troy Lee Gentry, of the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry, has been accused of killing a tame black bear that federal officials say he tagged as killed in the wild.

Gentry, 39, of Franklin, Tennessee, and Lee Marvin Greenly, 46, of Sandstone, appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond Erickson in connection with a sealed indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Minneapolis.

Authorities allege that Gentry purchased the bear from Greenly, a wildlife photographer and hunting guide, then killed it with a bow and arrow in an enclosed pen on Greenly's property in October 2004.

The government alleges that Gentry and Greenly tagged the bear with a Minnesota hunting license and registered the animal with the state Department of Natural Resources as a wild kill.

Gentry allegedly paid about $4,650 for the bear, named Cubby. The bear's death was videotaped, and the tape later edited so Gentry appeared to shoot the animal in a "fair chase" hunting situation, the government alleges.

If convicted, both Gentry and Greenly face a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a $20,000 fine.

Gentry's manager, Johnny Dorris, said Wednesday that Gentry, an outdoorsman and hunter, expects to be exonerated.

Gentry "relied on the knowledge and expertise of a local guide to obtain the proper permit," Dorris said in a written statement. "Troy felt what he did was legal and in full compliance of the law and was surprised to hear of the indictment."

Greenly did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Montgomery Gentry, along with co-singer Eddie Montgomery, are known for hits such as "My Town" and "If You Ever Stop Loving Me."

What's wrong with people? If he killed that poor bear in an enclosed pen, I look forward to when karma bites him in his ass.

Stuff like this happens all the time. You've heard of canned hunting? And now there's internet hunting, where the sick f*ckers can shoot caged animals from the comfort of their own homes.

I don't get it. And I think they create a terrible name for other hunters. There is no hunting at all involved with killing a cornered animal. :(

I'm glad I didn't read it before bed last night. I don't think I could have slept at all.

From what I've heard about Montgomery Gentry, they party hard. It wouldn't surprise me if he'd been drunk during the incident. Not that that makes it better, just wanted to share their reputation.

Sick. Just sick. I do not understand people's mentality, mainly men, and the need to shoot and kill wildlife like this. Does he really feel like more of a man now? I hope he get's jail time.

I hope they nail him to the cross.

I despise hunting in general, but incidents like this go beyond beyind a travesty.

Here is a link to another story about it on CMT. It gives Troy Gentry's side of the story.

"Troy is an avid environmentalist and hunter who supports and follows all game laws. Before he killed the bear, he was told by the bear guide that it was proper and legal to kill the bear, which was not a tamed bear and was never in a pen or cage. Troy used his correct name on his Minnesota bear hunting license and never attempted to disguise his identity."
I don't know many "environmentalists" who hunt, but perhaps his version of events is closer to what actually happened.

Sickening.

Of course, I think the type of hunting Cheney was doing when he shot his friend was pretty sick, too. I don't know why that type of thing is allowed.

MLA, what is canned hunting? Although maybe I don't want to know.

Canned hunting is the killing of an animal in an enclosure to obtain a trophy. The animals are sometimes tame exotic mammals; some, in fact, may have been hand-raised by the canned hunting operation or a breeder. These animals do not run from humans. Many groups that support hunting scorn canned hunting for its unsportsmanlike practice, because patrons are often guaranteed a kill.

Check out Sue's post above for a description of canned hunting from the Humane Society. It's so wrong.
