Hi - I am so hoping someone has some advice! I want to get a Brazilian for my upcoming anniversary as a surprise to DH ;) . But, even though I gave birth, lol, I am PETRIFIED. I have heard that some salons have some sort of numbing cream they apply first? Has anyone ever done this? I live in NY if you have any recs! Thanks!

Before I started doing laser hair removal (which for me is much worse than waxing), I did full waxes. Really, the pain was not that bad. I never used the numbing cream (didn't need it) but have heard it can interfere with the wax. Just bring stress balls and squeeze. Remember to breathe. Good luck!

ETA: There is this stuff on Amazon, it's called No Scream Cream (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FWCWVI/sr=8-1/qid=1155502679/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-4032905-5997520?ie=UTF8)

No scream cream... hahahaha. That's a great name.
I regularly get bikini waxes and it's not that bad. I don't use any creams or take advil or anything. For me, legs are a lot worse actually. Legs just go on forever and ever and it's like prolonged torture.

Thanks! I think I will order the cream (thank you so much Heather!) and just ask if it's okay to use before I go or whatever.
TMI but...... if it's my first time, how much should I let it, ahem, grow before I go?:o

Let it grow out for 2-3 weeks. And yeah, it hurts--my recommendation is to get your legs waxed first so you're at least used to the sensation. I went blithely into my first bikini wax thinking it would be nothing (I have a high pain tolerance). Jesus, it hurt! The next time I went in, I did my legs first, and by the time they got to my bikini I was steeled to the sensation and it wasn't intolerable at that point. The Advil really does help, as does a glass of wine if you can have one before the wax.

For what it's worth, it really only hurts the most the first time. You kinda build a tolerence for it. Like plucking your eyebrows. So if you keep it up, you won't think much of it after a few times.
Not sure where you are in NY but if it's NYC then I can give you some suggestions.

I agree, legs are MUCH worse. The first time I went in, I had built myself up for the most excruciating pain I could ever imagine. I took stress balls with me! LOL When it was over I was like, "That's it?" Heather is right, your tolerance does build up. Just get something for after, because sometimes you do get bumps sort of like razor bumps.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions....I like the wine one the best ;) .
Hula - we recently sold our place in the city to move out to LI, so I'm back there a lot because we miss it!. Any suggestions would be great since we are not too far. Thanks!

There is a place in the city that actually uses the cream before they wax you. I can't think of the name though, sorry :(

I use EMLA and don't feel a thing. It's a bit of a process though because you have to put the EMLA on well in advance and wrap it. But you are completely numb for the waxing.

Okay KD, I have to know...what does one do to wrap it??

Basically, I slap on the EMLA cream about an hour or so before my wax appt. Then I wrap the area with Saran Wrap. This "technique" was taught to me by the woman who did my laser treatment years ago. She also suggested wearing bike shorts over the wrap to keep it in place. It's definitely a tricky, messy process but I feel ZERO pain.

Okay I'm not normally the "police" of message boards, but PLEASE be careful of putting anything like a lidocaine cream (EMLA) and then wrapping it up. I've heard news stories before of young women dying that way. Please follow the manufacture directions of anything you use.
And for what it is worth. I've had brazillian waxes done before, and didn't think the pain was that bad, even the first time. I'm pretty sure your mileage may vary.
Good luck
:)

Very true. I had a prescription for EMLA when I had laser and wrapping was part of the directions. BUT it's only meant to be used for small areas. The major problems have occurred when it's used on legs or larger areas.
FWIW, EMLA is used on baby boys for circumcision.

Just wanted to echo that I too have heard news stories on this before. It was definitely a legit news report and I can't remember the details (tried to find something about it online but didn't have time to look thru all the results) but I know the result was that the girl died. And she had done the wrapping, etc. on the advice of a woman at the salon she went to. Scary!
That being said I have never had anything but my eyebrows waxed and I still cringe at that everytime :)

I just take an advil an hour before a brazilian and it takes the edge off.

OW, yeah I hate that when that happens...honestly I probably wouldn't go back to that waxer...the was was probably too hot. For now all you can really do is put some antiseptic cream on it until it heals a bit.
