The publishing company my SIL works for is having a lunch party for a new magazine.
The invitation says:
Twin Cities Metropolitan Magazine Launch Party
Friday August 25 2006
9 pm
Visage Night Cub (http://www.visagenightclub.com/)
Dress to Impress
What does that mean? Who am I supposed to be impressing?

Usually they're referring to really trendy hot-this-minute type clothing, kind of clubby. Like stuff you'd get at Forever 21.

Seriously? I’m way to old/fat for Forever 21.

Do you have a Nordstrom nearby? I'd go ask one of their stylists to show you some good looks for "dress to impress."

Unfortunately, new clothes for this event are not in the budget. I’m trying to figure out if there’s anything I already own that would work. I think I'd feel bad working with a stylist if I knew I wasn't going to buy anything.

Ask Wendalah. She's the fashion guru around these parts.

In cases like this where I'm way behind the trends and am headed somewhere trendy, I usually go with black tank/shell thing, jeans/pants, a heeled sandal and any funky jewelry I own.
wear black and get some funky earrings. if you don't have funky earring, you can get them pretty cheaply at most stores.
When I think of "Dress to Impress", I think that they want you to dress less 'professional daytime look' or 'casual jean look' and more 'nighttime sassy' and 'sophisticated but fun'. So basically something that you wouldn't really wear to work or on the weekends going to the grocery store. :)
I agree with Seb's Kitty about going perhaps the black outfit route if you can add some funky jewelry to it. From the flyer, it looks like a pretty modern club so maybe keep the whole outfit palette pretty monochrome and/or subdued with a few key accessories.
What's your style? What sorts of things do you wear when you go out at night? I think a black wrap dress with funky sandals would also look great but I'm not sure if you own something like this.

Um, I guess I don't really go out at night! I'm a jeans and t-shirt girl. I work in a super casual environment, so I pretty much never dress up anymore. This is the midwest, so you can where jeans just about anywhere. I've gained weight recently, so most of my clothes don't even fit. Here's what I have to work with:
-Black gauchos
-Tailored black knee length skirt
-Flowy black knee length skirt
-sequined black tank top
-A few dressy t's, but none in black
-A pink floral sundress
-This dress (http://www.rubyrox.com/images/jd-720_fi.jpg) – but black with pink tulle
-A pair of lighter washed jeans
-Dressy Bermuda shorts
For shoes, I have a pair of black open toe slides, and espadrilles with white straps.
I did email my SIL, and she replied with:
Just wear a cute dress or something...it is in the old Tropix so it isn't prom wear or anything. I would say a step up from work wear but not quite wedding wear.
i would wear the black gauchos with the black tank top.

Ditto. You could always dress it up with a few long necklaces or some dangly earrings.
Yup, I think the black gauchos would be best. Add the blank sequined tank top and black slides. Some dangly earrings would look great but if you don't have them, I wouldn't worry about it. I think the sequined top will make the whole outfit 'pop' so to speak. :)
Have fun at the party!

Or, you could wear the tank with the bermuda shorts; shorts are very in right now as more formal wear.

Thanks, everyone. Sequin black top it is. I like the Bermuda shorts idea, I’ll have to try them on together and see if I feel ridiculous. ;)

Ann,
You ALWAYS look really cute! Seriously, I think you have nice clothes already and you strike me as a fairly "hip" person. As for thinking your not thin or young enough...please! You look just great and you are younger than me I think, so you're young! Relax! :)

Okay, I really like the black gauchos with the black tank.... but perhaps instead of black slides you could make it pop with some colorful (red maybe?) shoes. If not, then go with the slides and a bright clutch (something fabulous on ebay perhaps?). I love all black but always like something to stand out. ;)
