View Full Version : What to wear to Fashion Week?

I'll be attending Olympus Fashion Week in New York in about 3 weeks or so for work and I need some suggestions on what to wear. I might decide to splurge on a designer outfit or two if it's classic and can be worn for a long time but I don't have an unlimited budget for this event.
I'd love some suggestions :)

Perhaps a DVF dress? Very classic and something that could be used in a number of different situations....

oooh, how exciting!
Are there any requirements because of your work (suit, dress, etc?)?

Nope, luckily I can wear whatever I'd like :). Here's what some celebs/socialites wore last year: http://www.olympusfashionweek.com/spring2006/the_scene/, although I imagine I could never afford what they're wearing.

I've heard the rule that you should take your cue from the designer whose show you're attending. But you can't go wrong with a DVF dress. I think there were some on sale at Neiman's or Bluefly, IIRC.

Thanks all for the suggestions.. I'll take a look online and at my local Nordstroms for DVF. I've never tried on the DVF dresses at Nordies but then again, I'm more of a TBD shopper rather than Savvy.
What do you think of this Marc Jacobs dress?

A couple of tops I've come across:

I love, love, love the dress!!! Beautiful! And I love the 2nd top. The 1st top looks a little too pale with the model's skin tone (although that might also be b/c I'm sitting out in the sun and not getting a good picture...) but if you are darker it would be great. The 3rd top is super cute too! Great finds... I'd definitely do the dress. :) Oh, I'm so jealous!
You lucky lucky girl! I hope you don't mind me asking, but do you work in the fashion industry? I am dreaming for the day that I can attend Fashion Week in my future career.
I think the DVF dress is a good idea but maybe too 'safe' for NYC fashion week? The Marc Jacobs dress is great and you could add some great shoes in red to make it a little more 'edgy'?
Here are some other inspiration ideas:

I've been seeing a lot of this look lately:
http://a1216.g.akamai.net/f/1216/955/6h/images2.nordstrom.com/ImageGallery/store/Product/MediumLarge/13/_5226153.jpg
maybe pair this top and belt with skinny black pants and peep toe platform shoes
http://img.timeinc.net/people/i/2006/stylechannel/blog/060821/steve_madden_shoes320x240.jpg
or black ballet flats.
This dress is gorgeous and could be worn with funky, gold type heels:

I agree with not being too safe and taking it a little higher on the funk factor:-) The shoes someone just posted are what I saw everywhere last week when I was in NY.... the hidden platform peep toe.

I think you can't go wrong with Marc Jacobs. On the other hand, if it were me -- I keep thinking you're not going to be able to outdo the celebs and the socialites, so I'd maybe try a less well know designer. If you're in LA, there are some really cool LA-based designers.
If that's not an option, what about Anna Sui? Catherine Malandrino is also nice. Hmmm. Isaac Mizrahi for Target? KIDDING!

I'm so excited for you...I cannot wait to see what you pick! I was walking past Bryant park just fantasizing about fashion week! I hope it isn't that hot for you!

I would invest in a really great bag and shoes - preferably Marc Jacobs :) For clothes, I would stay away from anything flashy - think classic. A DVF dress is always a great choice.

Everybody say it with me...go vintage!
I'd probably go for a pair of plain black pants and try to find a unique vintage blouse. As someone else said, you can't compete with the celebs, so don't. Just try to be different. That's what fashion is all about!

I agree! Have fun with your clothes! It's NY! I was there last week for market and it was so hot so I just brought a bunch of summer dresses. I found one at Forever 21 and every showroom I went into people were asking me where I got it. Remember everything is a knock off and if you put a designer item with a good cheep basic no one will know. Everyone over there does that! And yes the peep toe was everywhere especially with a skinny pant. I love fashion week! I have only been once when I worked in better goods. But now I'm in moderate so I never get to go :( Have fun!

A few ideas...I'm in a black mood today...
Vintage Valentino jacket:

Vintage Lanz dress (would look cute with platform pumps)

Vintage Christian Dior jacket (try this with skinny jeans and ankle boots?)

Vintage Chanel Blouse

I was thinking about vintage too, but for some reason I was thinking it might be sort of like thumbing your nose at the designers. Now that I write this out, it sounds really stupid, but I was thinking it's like, FU designers, who cares about your new shit! It's all been done before!
But maybe I'm just thinking about this WAY too hard. :o
As an aside, if you can find anything Rochas by Olivier Theyskins, I think that would be cool. The corporation behind the fashion house just pulled the plug, so there's all this buzz about what he'll do next.
