Dog cull in China to fight rabies (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5233704.stm)

Geez, what a bunch of geniuses over there.

I just saw that, too. I can't believe that person was walking their dog and they just took it and killed it like that. You would think they would be more humane about the whole thing.

Yes, it's horrifying, but not terribly surprising. When I think of the Chinese government, "humane" is not a word that comes to mind. Tieneman Square, anyone?

Ah, the hammer method. Don't do anything preventative early on (e.g. vaccinations) and when things get out of control, break out the hammer...in this case, literally. Poor dogs.

Since the hammer method is so popular by China's government, I'm curious to see what its response will be once this internet thingy gets out of control over there. Google can't censor everything ya know.

I can't read it. Raging hormones will lead me to severe anger, tears or depression, so I am avoiding it.

I can tell enough from what you ladies have said. Ugh. I hate when people hurt innocent animals.

Thee is another slaughter planned. From an article (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14181622/) on MSNBC.com-

BEIJING - For the second time in days, Chinese authorities have ordered a mass slaughter of dogs to curb a rabies outbreak — drawing criticism from animal lovers but also support from many who say it’s the only way to contain a disease that kills more than 2,000 Chinese a year.

Officials in the eastern city of Jining plan to kill all dogs within three miles of areas where rabies has been found, the official Xinhua News Agency said Friday.

Thats awful! If I were living there and had a dog I'd hide it at home and let it pee and poop in the house just so they dont kill it. :(

Bumping with a petition that was just sent to me by one of my classmates:

Say NO to mass dog slaughter in China (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/131317412?ltl=1155181395)

I'm usually one that signs petitions...but I really don't think China gives a rats ass. This is actually better than they treat their citizens.

I agree that the method they are using and the manner in which they are collecting the dogs is horrifying. I love my babies and can only imagine how hard I would fight if someone tried to take/hurt them. I also agree that this didn't have to happen and that the focus should have been on preventative measures.

However, I think it's kind-of hard for us (USA) to say to them that they should stop the killings period, becuase of the number of dogs killed in this country on a daily basis. Espeicially since they have the justification of preventing the further spead of rabies. I'm not saying the situations are by any means identical, and here it is not the government doing the killing. But the arguments about prevention apply here as well, they just refer to different things.

Again not saying the situation is the same. And I'm not mentioning this to say that we have "no right" to be upset what's going on in China or shouldn't discuss it.

Um, I don't think that's true at all. A vet euthanizing a dog in a shelter is totally different than mass killings by beating a dog to death in the street.
