Please recommend your favorite dandruff shampoos that work! I was using H&S, but it stopped working. I really don't feel like paying $9/bottle for the expensive ones...any cheapo brands you can tell me about? TIA!
Miriam
Target brand works as well as H&S.

I just started getting a dry scalp this past winter...I tried H&S and it made my hair really heavy/greasy.
I only have the dryness where I part my hair...not my full scalp...so I just dab on a bit of moisturizer to that area.

I use a prescription shampoo -- 2% Ketoconazole -- I haven't used anything short of the prescription that worked as well. It smells weird but it does its job so I'm not complaining...
ETA: the prescription stuff costs me ~$10 and the bottle usually lasts me 2 months, longer if I don't wash my hair every day. It's more expensive than something you'd find in the supermarket but to me it's worth it.

that's weird...i posted in here at lunch, but i don't see my post!
anyway, i use OTC Nizoral, which is more expensive than H&S, but it is the only thing that works for me as well as you don't have to use it everyday. my dermatologist 'prescribed'/suggested my using it, but she knew that it was sebhorric dermatitis that was causing my problem.
i think that dandruff can be caused by several different things one being fungus, so certain medicines in certain shampoos will treat different causes. that's why some shampoos will work for you and some won't. if this is a problem causing you discomfort (whether itchy/sore or self consciousness), then seeing a derm about it might be a good idea.
i thought i could manage mine on my own b/c it was just dry skin, and finally when it got bad enough so i went to my derm, it was the biggest relieft to find something that combats it and keeps it from coming back. i use Nizoral 2-3 times a week for regular treatment, then more often if i'm having a flair up.

I got some good, inexpensive stuff from Sally Beauty Supply - dandruff shampoo by Ion. It's brown and has tar in it like Neutrogena T-Sal (which also works well.) But this Ion stuff is cheaper, comes in a bigger bottle, and is essentially the same thing. Ion also makes a great dandruff conditioner w/ menthol that tingles when you rub it on your scalp. I don't think menthol actually stops dandruff, but it feels cool and refreshing!

Bringing back this thread because I have the same prob. as last winter. My whole scalp is not dry...just the very front part by my forehead. I've tried using moisturizing shampoos, head & shoulders and more conditioner in that area and nothing is working. I don't blow dry my hair so that isn't a reason either.
Anyone have any new recs. for a dry scalp treatment?
Paige, thanks for posting about the Nizoral. I'm going to have to look into that for the hubby. He's got occasional psoriasis, and when he's in his flare ups, his scalp is fiercely flaky. I'll have to check this out for him.
Otherwise Shop, the T-Gels have all worked okay for him. H&S also has a few "intense" formulas out now as well.

I was really surprised at how well this worked- Neutrogena Triple Moisture has both a dry scalp shampoo and conditioner. Using both made my hair too oily, but alternating just the conditioner with my regular conditioner totally took care of any flakiness for me.

I think I heard somewhere that using vingar on your scalp really helps...Ive dabbed apple cider vinegar on my scalp before. I cant remember if it worked or not. I think it did. Ive also dabbed on tea tree oil and peppermint. DONT DO the PEPPERMINT OIL UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE AWAKE FOR MANY HOURS.
Depending on the season and my stress level, I go through various phases of dandruff-like symptoms.

I always get dandruff towards the end of winter. I know you said that H&S didn't work for you, but I've found that if I use it WITHOUT any conditioner, it works really well. My hair gets greasy if I condition along with the H&S.
I've also recently switch to Suave strawberry scented shampoo & conditioner and have noticed a decrease in my dandruff. It may be that your current shampoo/conditioner is causing the problem.

My mom swears by Tea Tree shampoo and the conditioner, she has prety severe psoriasis and this works great for her, T-gel also seems to do pretty good but she has switched to only using Tea tree.
