Im really upset, actually i cant stop crying which i know is partly due to my raging hormones and partly due to the fact that im so scared about possibly having GD...

My # was 160... has anyone ever tested this high and passed the three hour... i was told that they look for under 135 and at 180 they skip the three hour test and just treat you for GD.... im not feeling very good about my chances of passing the 3 hour and am feeling very upset about this whole thing.

thanks for any info or insight you might have.

I personally know two people in the last few years who have failed the 1 hour and then went on to pass the three hour. So, there is hope that you'll go on to pass the three hour.

Mind if I ask what you ate prior to taking the test? If you ate shortly before the test, your sugar levels could have also been higher because it was processing food as well as the drink they give you.

Some ladies with GD don't have to use insulin, some just have to change their diets.

Good luck, hope you pass the three hour. I'm sure there will be other ladies who come by with more information for you. :)

I'm not really any help because I don't know what my numbers were, but I failed my 1 hour and my 3 hour. Plenty of women fail their one hour and pass the 3 hour-I just wasn't one of the lucky ones. No insulin for me, I just had to change my diet and I have to go to the lab every 2 weeks to have my sugar tested. It hasn't really been *that* bad, but I will say I am very much looking forward to it being over. Hopefully you will pass the 3 hour and not have to worry about any of this! There is a GD thread on here if you are interested:

I also failed my 1 hour. My # was 140 when my DR's office likes to see lower than 135. I think they should just make you fast from the begining to avoid scaring/upsetting so many people. I'm off to take my 3 hour next week.

I failed my 1-hour, but passed my 3-hour. It is very common.

My best advice is to make sure you bring something to occupy your time for the 3-hour. It is a lot of waiting... and at my hospital, I was actually there for like 4 hrs. Sitting in the waiting room in between draws. Very long and boring... wish I'd have brought something to do, as the magazine selection was awful.

I failed my 1-hour and passed my 3-hour as well, so try not to worry about it too much. Like the above poster said, it's common. And I agree, take magazines and books w/you to occupy your time.

I failed my 1 hour with a score of 168! I thought for sure that meant I was doomed to have GD and was depressed for a week. I had my 3-hour two weeks ago and found out I passed. So, even though your count is high, don't worry too much. I can't even blame the 168 on something I ate. I had Raisin Bran for breakfast and just before going in around 1:00 that afternoon, I had a single bite of a burger and 2 frenchfries. Definitely not enough to throw the test off that much.

Hang in there - hopefully it will turn out fine - and definitely bring something to read.

I failed the 1-hour at 152. I’m terrified of needles so I refused to do the 3-hour test as it requires 4 blood draws. So, I’m watching my blood sugar levels. I’ve met with a dietician and do a finger prick every morning, when I first wake up (it’s called fasting). As long as that number is below 95, I’m all good. I range in the 70s and 80s. However, this morning, I tested at 90, which didn’t surprise me as I had a late dinner last night.

Not sure what happens if I test over 95. I know I’m supposed to call my OB immediately, but have no idea what the next step would be.

As I mentioned, I’m terrified of needles, and was hysterical when I had to do the blood draw for the 1-hour test. Apparently stress can increase your blood sugar levels, so it’s not surprising that I failed at 152.

Good luck.

I'm sorry. I can only offer my sympathies. I am going for my 1-hour test next week. I am so afraid I will fail it. My appointment is at 9:45am and I think you just convinced me not to eat any breakfast before hand. I dont want anything to interfere with it.

Good luck at your 3-hour.

Oh, Alanna, I'm sorry. Try not to worry too much until you really know you have a reason to worry, though! Wait and see how the 3 hour test goes before you really start to worry about it, and even if the 3 hour test goes badly usually they first try to treat it with diet control, right?

I'm surprised that they don't tell you not to eat *anything* before the test. Here they are very strict, about all blood draws, actually, but especially about this one. No food whatsoever before, and they won't even take your blood after 11am.

I have to go for my glucose test sometime in the next week I guess. Not looking forward to it.

I failed the 1 hour, changed my diet, and did fine on the 3 hour. I stayed on the GD diet the remainder of my pregnancy, though, at my OB's suggestion.

Brink I'm no doctor, but I'm going to guess that the carbs in the Raisin Bran caused your levels to be high. I used to eat Basic 4 a lot when I was pg, and it has a ton of carbs, same as Raisin Bran. I had been told not to eat anything super sugary before the test, but no one warned me that a seemingly healthy breakfast cereal had so many carbs and that those carbs would be converted to sugars and throw off my test!

I failed the 1 hour and then failed one of the 4 blood draws during the 3 hour. I had to meet with a nutritionist and change my diet. My blood was also checked at the next couple of appointments, but then nothing after. Other than scaring the living crap out of me that I was going to have a 10 pound baby, I think the nutritionist was a waste.

Ohana - that might make sense. Although, I ate at around 7:30 in the morning and didn't have my test until around 1:00 or so. You would think it would have processed by then, but sounds like it had not.

I agree with everyone else, even though they say you don't have to fast for the 1 hour, I would anyway. If you can get in to the lab in the a.m., it's not so bad. The drink is a little more difficult on a completely empty stomach, but if it helps to not make you go back for the 3-hour - definitely worth it.

Good luck.

I had to fast until after I was done with my test, went in around 9:00 and than was out of there at about 11. I didn't have a blood draw to see if I was negative or not, I had to do a urine sample, than had the drink and than had the draw and no results for almost a week, until my appt. I was tested at a level 200 and getting sent to a perinatologist to see the nutrientist. Never did go though, as I lost the baby 2 weeks before the appt.

If you need to eat, I would suggest you get up as early as possible. They say usually 4 hours before eating is ok, but I would go earlier if you could.

I am yet another lady who failed the 1 hr glucose (145?) but passed the 3 hour with flying colors. I blame my 1 hr on the bagel sandwich i had for lunch that day :p

Thanks everyone for all the stories and encouragement...

I actually took my test early on monday morning... I had been told not to eat anything high in sugar... so all i had in my stomach was 5 multigrain harvest crisp crackers... so in my case i dont think i had a bad spike because of what i ate...

my three hour is on next wednesday....
